True cost of Brexit on UK trade revealed as calls to rejoin single market grow

Brexit is costing the UK £11.7bn a year in lost exports, stark new figures show, piling further pressure on Andy Burnham to rejoin the EU’s single market and customs union.

The damning findings by Logistics UK, which represents freight companies and is one of the largest trade associations in the UK, show that the loss in revenue compared with 2019 is worth £400 per household in the UK per year.

The organisation has called on the prime minister to push for greater alignment with EU regulations as campaign groups ramp up pressure to find a pathway for Britain back into the bloc.

It comes as a major new business survey by the European Movement UK has revealed that 72.8 per cent of firms say that Brexit has had a negative impact on their businesses, 96.4 per cent say it has had a negative impact on their communities, and 98.2 per cent want the UK to rejoin the EU’s single market.

Logistics UK head of trade James Mills, a former advisor on Labour’s Treasury team, said: “Greater trade matters because it is closely linked to productivity. It gives businesses access to larger markets, encourages investment and allows successful firms to specialise and grow. Yet Britain’s recent performance points in the wrong direction.”

He said there is “a huge prize” on economic growth to be had by fixing the loss in trade and noted that since the UK voted to leave the EU in 2016, UK goods exports by tonnage have fallen 20.7 per cent. Export volumes to the EU have fallen 15.9 per cent, while exports to the rest of the world have fallen 37.2 cent.

That’s despite promises of a trade boom with the rest of the world made by Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and other leading Brexiteers at the time of the referendum.

The findings emerged in a week where Mr Burnham disappointed many with his decision to stick to Keir Starmer’s red lines on Brexit and not rejoin the single market or customs union.

That is despite Labour MPs overwhelmingly being in favour of rejoining both and a vote being passed in the Commons supporting the move.

Mr Burnham has previously said he supports rejoining the EU and earlier this week promised to be “bolder” than Sir Keir in his forthcoming Brexit reset talks due to take place next month.

Mr Mills said unnecessary paperwork, border complexity and duplicated processes due to Brexit were making exporting harder and more expensive than it needs to be.

“At a time when finding sustainable ways to grow the economy is more important than ever, reducing those frictions is one of the clearest opportunities available. Fix how we trade, and we can help fix how we grow,” added.

Research published by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) last summer put the administrative burden of Britain’s import and export declarations with the EU, which became necessary after Brexit, at £1.8bn in 2022 alone, across 38.6 million declarations. At HMRC’s own timings of 19 to 28 minutes each, that is 15 million hours a year that could have been spent more productively.

Mike Galsworthy, chair of the European Movement UK, said: “The absolute killer on our businesses, large and small, is paperwork. What hurts is the sheer time, cost and risk of it. Brexit is a huge source of that paperwork, creating vast barriers where previously there were none. Rejoining the single market and customs union, or better, the EU outright, would remove it entirely.”

Naomi Smith, chief executive of Best for Britain, which campaigns for the UK’s renewed EU membership to get the country’s Gross Domestic Product growing again, said: “Ministers must urgently prioritise practical reforms to address this crisis, but at the bigger picture level, if Burnham really want to secure good growth and lower the cost of living he cannot afford to overlook the GDP growth on offer via EU membership, which independent analysis finds could have almost ten times (£92bn) the impact of these measures.”

Daisy Cooper, the Lib Dem Treasury spokeswoman and deputy leader, said the government “cannot sustain its red lines on Europe anymore” and called for action to help struggling businesses.

“It should take up the Lib Dem plan to unleash British business and slash red tape by striking a deal for a new customs union with the EU and joining the single market. That is the single biggest lever the government can pull to finally get our economy growing again,” she said.

The impact of Brexit on UK businesses is clear, with almost 80 per cent of firms polled telling the European Movement‘s Business Impact Survey they were pessimistic about their future prospects.

Mike Donovan, who runs Apparel Studio Stockport, said its earnings were cut in half almost overnight after the EU voted leave the bloc.

“The 12 per cent tariffs on all imports and exports drastically decreased our profits which meant we had to change our business model and move our manufacturing to countries like Turkey,” he said.

Austin Wildmore, from Paws Pet Transport, said: “When the Brexit referendum happened, I didn’t believe any UK government would seek the deal we ended up with, I couldn’t imagine a government would inflict this on its own nation.

“However, as soon as the final agreement was in place and we were faced with a hard tariff Brexit, my business was affected overnight. Suddenly, all our veterinary licenses were null and void, and there were no reciprocal licenses available. Our biggest problem was border control in the UK.”

Marco Forgione, director general of the Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade, said, it was right to say trade intensity had slipped since Brexit.

But he claimed the services trade, such as banking and tourism, had “more than offset” a large part of the weakness in goods being traded, with services exports up from £340bn in 2019 and to £546bn in 2025.

“Where Logistics UK is right is that compared to G7 nations UK real trade volumes have lagged since 2019. Services growth has not been enough to bridge the gap,” he added.

The postcode gangs terrorising Middlesbrough: How brazen young criminals linked to A66 crash have fought battles over the town’s drug trade

Published

on

Curtis Cremin, pictured holding a huge machete, was jailed for running an organised county drugs line, in TS6 and TS3. It is understood he has links to the A66 gang

For nearly a week, Middlesbrough has been gripped by a wave of violence that has left residents too intimidated to leave their homes.

‘This is terrorism,’ declared Andy McDonald, the MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East as he led growing calls for police to get a grip on the suspected gang violence spiralling out of control.

But for locals, postcode gangs have been terrorising the town long before Saturday’s fatal A66 crash, running county lines operations, grooming young children and fighting battles over the town’s drugs trade.

‘It’s gang warfare,’ one terrified local told the Daily Mail today. ‘This has been going on for years and years and now it’s escalated.’

A surge in violence followed the deaths of five young men – four of whom had previous convictions – after they crashed into a police car while driving the wrong way down the A66 at South Bank, near Middlesbrough, killing PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough.

Since then, two men, aged 31 and 23, have been arrested on suspicion of murder after seven-year-old Valentina Foster and her aunt Natalie McDonald, 34, were killed on Wednesday in a house fire in Grangetown, around one mile from the A66 crash.

And on Thursday, a house on Steele Crescent, South Bank, was rammed into by a car and a 39-year-old man was stabbed on Sedgemoor Road, Eston. Police have ruled out a link between the house fire and the A66 crash, and are probing whether the other incidents are connected.

South Bank, Grangetown and Eston, are all within the TS6 postcode of Middlesbrough, which has long been a hotspot for criminal activity.

Thugs in the area are understood to have a long-running rivalry with the neighbouring TS3 postcode, which covers estates such as Thorntree, Brambles Farm, Park End and Berwick Hills.

Members of the A66 crash gang are also believed to be linked to criminals convicted of being part of organised county line gangs in the TS3 and TS6 postcodes.

In November last year, 19-year-old Curtis Cremin was jailed for four and a half years after being convicted of running an organised county drugs line that exploited young boys.

Cremin was found to have run a phone line that was used to advertise the sale of crack cocaine and cocaine. He groomed and exploited young teen boys to deal the drugs.

Cremin was arrested at a property on Cargo Fleet Lane, the border separating TS3 and TS6, after he was found with three other men including a 13-year-old boy. While on bail, he even set up a new drugs line.

It is understood Cremin, who has posted pictures of himself holding a machete online and mocked the police for not being able to catch him before he was arrested, knew the A66 crash gang, who he has paid tribute to on Facebook.

‘Everyone be there give them best send of [sic] they can have,’ he wrote alongside a post calling for friends to gather for a ‘balloon release’ in honour of Makai Saddington, Theo Rae and Cole Worthy.

Cremin was finally snared under a police operation codenamed Project Orme, which was launched to crack down on organised crime plaguing TS3. Cops tackling organised crime in TS3 seized cocaine, heroin and cannabis from 2,000 drug deals, 14 weapons and £22,175 in cash between November 2024 and 2025.

In February, a second criminal organisation was dismantled by police with four men –Craig Turner Snr, Craig Turner Jnr,  Luke Turner and Stephen Garbutt, all convicted of drugs offences.

Louie Leadbeater, aged 18, who lived on Cargo Fleet Lane, was jailed for three years and 19-year-old Laiton Hopkins, of Cotswold Avenue, in TS3, was handed a suspended sentence.

Leadbeater is friends with Cole Worthy, one of the five killed in the A66 crash, and has posted pictures online of the pair together.

Hopkins, meanwhile, has shared tributes online to the five, posting: ‘Rest in peace lads youse will be missed big love.’

He previously mocked the police by sharing his mugshot with the caption: ‘Hahaha’.

Police said their criminality would take place in broad daylight, mostly in playgrounds used by children as well as outside schools, while using electric and off-road bikes with their faces covered with balaclavas.

Organised crime gangs will also use the homes of vulnerable adults by forcing their way into the property to use as a drugs base, they said.

The TS3/TS6 postcode feud gained significant media attention in 2016, when police scrambled to crack down on violence after receiving reports of youths fighting and children carrying blades to school.

Locals reported seeing large gangs of youths carrying weapons, typically gathering in wasteland between the borders of the two postcodes.

Lime Road, in between Teesville in TS6 and Brambles Farm in TS3 – and the Eston recreation ground, known locally as ‘the rec’, were identified as hotspots for crime.

Residents described youths carrying hammers and metal poles and complained of their homes being targeted by rocks ‘the size of cricket balls’, Teesside Live reported at the time.

Inspector Harrison, of Cleveland Police, said at the time: ‘We believe that these fights have been arranged as part of a postcode rivalry know as ‘TS3/TS6 War’. We have had reports of weapons being involved… We’ve had also received reports that children are carrying bladed articles to school in relation to issues between rival postcodes.’

When the Mail visited TS6 today, residents were terrified to leave their homes.

One woman, a carer, said: ‘The car crash, the fire, the stabbing, it’s too much. I don’t go out at night. I am too afraid, and I am also scared for my family.

‘There are break-ins, violence, drugs. It’s gang warfare. Its gangs and drugs and a mixture of everything.

‘I come out during the day, but at 6pm I lock the doors and I don’t leave the house again. I’ve had cameras installed because I am so worried. There’s a definite atmosphere of fear.

‘The police don’t do enough. This has been going on for years and years and now it’s escalated.’

Another local added: ‘What’s gone on is just awful. It’s gang related, and what happened to that little girl, who died in the fire, is just horrendous.

‘Where will this all end? I am worried now that things will escalate further, and there will be a full blown riot.

‘Whatever the child’s family might have done, she didn’t deserve to die. It’s shocking, awful. There’s always been a problem with gangs in the area, but it’s largely hidden.

‘Now, a gang has been upset, and it’s all out in the open. We can see it with our own eyes, and it’s terrifying.’

A local pensioner said: ‘What’s happening in Middlesbrough is shameful.

‘I have lived here all my life and been happy here, but I am now terrified for my family. I have grandkids, and great grandkids and I am scared for my young ones going out in it.

‘And I now worry how the very young ones will turn out.’

Former Middlesbrough mayor Andy Preston has warned that ‘dangerous tracksuit scrotes’ are holding parts of the town to ransom.

He told The Express: ‘You’ll hear police officers and people like me talk about them as organised crime, which they technically are, but they are disorganised crime.

‘Don’t think of The Sopranos. These guys are 22, wearing tracksuits, living week-to-week; they are gormless and stupid, but they are dangerous.’

He said the feuds can escalate quickly, noting: ‘When they have feuds – whether over money, turf, or a perceived slight – they seek to intimidate each other to back off.

‘At the lowest level, they might torch someone’s car. As it escalates, they’ll smash the windows of a family home, shoot a shotgun at a front door, or ram-raid a house with a car. Sometimes, they burn houses down.’

Four of the five men killed in the A66 smash had accumulated 37 convictions between them, including vehicle theft, drug offences and assaulting police officers.

Since Saturday’s A66 crash, police have arrested 17 people aged between 18 and 61 across Teesside as part of their investigation, who were detained on a range of offences – including possession of a firearm and being part of an organised crime group.

More than 200 officers have been deployed to assist Cleveland Police, which is one of Britain’s smallest forces despite covering an area of the country which has the highest crime rate in England and Wales.

Last night, a mob of youths torched several cars and set off fireworks at a balloon release vigil for Michael Cahill, one of the A66 crash gang.

Thugs drove around horses on a field at speed before dousing their cars in petrol and setting them on fire which brought terror to the local community.

Upwards of 60 people including children as young as six gathered on public land in Haswell, County Durham, last night, where they set off rocket fireworks and released helium balloons.

The climax of the vigil involved several cars deliberately smashing into each other before they were covered in petrol and set alight as police arrived, filling the air with huge plumes of black smoke.

It is understood Cahill, who was in the doomed VW Passat which smashed into a police car on the A66 in Middlesbrough on Saturday, had lived next to the field.

An inquest yesterday heard he was from the Peterlee area and had died of head and torso injuries.

This morning a clean-up operation was underway, as locals filled bin bags with rubbish left behind on the land. Police and council workers were also at the scene, where a large, black, scorch mark had been left behind on the ground.

One woman, who lives close to the field, but didn’t want to be named, said: ‘It was absolutely terrifying.

‘It feels lawless. It’s as though law and order has broken down.

‘It’s horrendous. They are absolute scum. They did the racing around first, and then all you saw was black smoke.

‘They would say they were celebrating the man’s life, but it’s a funny way to pay your respects.

‘I saw them running about four or five cars around the terrified horses. The horses were really distressed. The black smoke was terrifying. You felt like you were in Beirut.

‘There were some very young kids there. Some were about six or seven, there with their parents.

‘It’s just awful, there are no words to describe it. A lot of the time, people are too scared to get the police involved, and crime is simply not reported.

‘I feel sorry for the officers. There’s no respect. There’s no trust in them.’

Another woman, who also lives close by, added: ‘I woke up this morning and told my husband, I feel traumatised.

‘It was absolutely terrifying. The cars were racing around on the field, which is what the locals use to exercise their dogs.

‘There were two horses on the field, and they were rallying around them. Some of the neighbours went out to try and get the horses to safety.

‘They asked them to stop the cars, but they refused, and just kept on racing about. Then they started crashing into each other, and I just thought, how stupid can you get? That’s how your friend died.

‘But they just don’t think in the same way as we do. They started crashing into each and the police arrived, and at that point, they quickly got petrol cans out and set alight to all the cars.

‘A farmer from an adjoining field took the horses away, and used his tractor to remove the burnt out cars.

‘They were also setting off rockets. The fire brigade had turned up and I overheard one of the lads say, ‘Aim at the fire engines’.

‘It’s a terrifying thing to have happened on our doorstep. The field is a mess this morning and it’s the local community left to pick up the pieces.’

Neither woman wanted to be named out of fear of reprisal from those involved in the vigil.

It comes as at least 12 armed police swooped on a residential street about five miles away last night, shouting for the occupants of a house to come to the front door.

The incident lasted around an hour in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, while Cleveland Police officers along with others from nearby forces surrounded front and back.

Armed response officers had been called at 9.15pm after reports of a fight involving a weapon, which saw a 25-year-old man taken to hospital with facial fractures.

Four people were arrested on suspicion of affray – a boy aged 17, two men aged 39 and 43 and a woman aged 30. The men were also arrested on suspicion of wounding.

Several occupants of the house were brought out one by one, although the force later said there is ‘not believed to be any link to wider criminality at this time’.

Also this morning, a 21-year-old man arrested over the investigation into events leading up to the fatal collision on Saturday was charged with a drugs offence.

Andy McDonald, the MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East, told Times Radio: ‘People are saying that they are going to their shops and not feeling safe to do so and feeling trapped in their own homes.

‘That is just unacceptable. This is terrorism and we’ve got to have an appropriate response to deal with the people who are causing such mayhem in our communities and to allow people to lead their peaceful lives.’

Mr McDonald earlier told BBC Radio 4 there appeared to be a ‘causal link with organised crime’.

Violence, believed to be a fallout from the crash that killed PCs Blades and Clough, has spiralled across Teesside.

Alec Brown, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Council, said more than 200 extra police officers have been or will be sent from around the country to support Cleveland Police and that he would be asking the Prime Minister for more support.

He said officers were ‘working 20-hour days to ensure the ongoing safety of innocent residents’.

Anna Turley, MP for Redcar, said: ‘I know how worried people are, and understandably people want to know what is being done.

‘There is a significant response under way, with additional officers and resources being brought into our area and agencies working together around the clock.’

She added: ‘People have a right to feel safe in their homes and in their communities. That is our absolute priority.’

Yesterday two further incidents saw a car crash into a wall outside a South Bank home and a 39-year-old stabbed around midday in nearby Eston.

A resident near the site of the stabbing said people in the area were ‘trying to keep our heads down’.

Referring to the postcode which covers Eston, Grangetown and South Bank, among other areas, he said: ‘TS6 has gone mad, it’s brutal.’

Yesterday afternoon, armed police swarmed a house on the Bankfield estate in Eston after a 39-year-old man was stabbed. The man has been receiving treatment following the assault.

The decision on extra police was announced by Mr Brown, who wrote on social media: ‘Over 200 extra police officers from forces around the country are here and are en route, from detectives to armed response.

‘I will be sending a letter today to our Prime Minister asking for even more resources. People need to feel safe in their homes.’

Middlesbrough has the highest crime rate in England excluding central London, and rival criminal groups have been spreading fear among residents.

There were 123.4 recorded crimes per 1,000 population in the Cleveland area in the year to March 2026, according to the latest available Home Office figures.

This is some way ahead of the force with the next highest rate, West Yorkshire (107.9), as well as the largest forces Greater Manchester (103.7) and the Metropolitan Police (101.0).

The rate for the whole of England and Wales in the year to March stood at 84.7 per 1,000 population.

Cleveland also tops the list in various categories of crime.

The force has the highest rate for shoplifting (15.9 recorded offences per 1,000 people); criminal damage and arson (15.0 per 1,000); violence with injury (12.6 per 1,000); burglary (6.1 per 1,000) and sexual offences (5.0 per 1,000).

It has the second highest rate for all offences involving violence against the person (44.3 per 1,000 people, behind West Yorkshire on 45.8); and for all theft offences (35.7 per 1,000, behind the Metropolitan Police on 46.4).

Crime rates are the fairest way to compare levels of offences across the country, as they take into account the size of the population in different areas.

Homicide rates are typically measured per million population, rather than per 1,000, given the very low number of offences recorded.

Cleveland Police had a homicide rate of 21.7 per million people in the year to March, higher than any other force.

The rate for the whole of England and Wales was 8.1 per million.

There were 157.2 knife offences per 100,000 people recorded by Cleveland Police in the year to March – again, the highest rate of any force.

This was up from 151.8 in the previous 12 months.

All crime rate comparisons exclude the City of London, due to its very small population size.

Four local authority areas are covered by Cleveland Police: Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees.

It had 1,503 full-time equivalent officers as of March 31 2026, ranking it 31st out of the 43 territorial forces in England and Wales by size, ahead of Northamptonshire (1,488 officers) and behind Gwent (1,552).

Why innovative ‘bio-materials’ are still more sci-fi than fashion revolution

Why innovative ‘bio-materials’ are still more sci-fi than fashion revolution

Walk around any major fashion exhibition and you might get the impression that biofabricated materials are about to transform fashion. Grown using living organisms, they’re often showcased as the next generation of sustainable materials — promising alternatives to leather, polyester and other conventional textiles.

This year’s Première Vision Paris international textile trade show highlights biofabricated materials as part of fashion’s future. It is showcasing innovations grown from fungi, bacteria and agricultural waste alongside discussions about artificial intelligence and next-generation manufacturing.

This may give the impression that the next generation of clothing is just around the corner. Yet open almost any wardrobe and you’ll find the same fibres that have dominated for decades: cotton, polyester, wool and leather.

So why is there such a gap between the headlines and the high street?

It’s easy to assume the answer is cost. Biofabricated materials are often associated with luxury fashion and concept collections, making them seem out of reach for everyday consumers. Cost certainly matters, but is definitely not the whole story.

Developing a new material is only the first step. Convincing an industry built around traditional textiles to adopt it is a very different challenge. The science has moved faster than the fashion system it feeds into.

Research into biofabricated materials has accelerated rapidly over the past decade. Scientists can now grow sheets of bacterial cellulose, produce leather-like materials from fungi and transform agricultural waste into fibres with remarkable properties.

From a scientific perspective, these advances are extraordinary. But science alone doesn’t put a new material into people’s wardrobes.

Every new biofabricated material enters a world in which existing textiles have already been refined over decades, and in some cases centuries. Leather has been optimised through generations of tanning and finishing, while cotton has benefited from continuous improvements in spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing. Polyester has been engineered to be durable, affordable and easy to manufacture at enormous scale.

Innovation alone won’t put new materials into people’s wardrobes.
LightField Studios/Shutterstock

New biofabricated materials are often – unrealistically – expected to compete immediately with all of that. But growing a material is only the beginning. They then need to be dried, coloured, finished, tested, manufactured consistently and produced at a scale that global fashion brands can rely on.

Mainstream fashion manufacturers need repeatability – the same material, colour and performance every time. Living systems don’t always behave like that. Small changes in growing conditions can produce different outcomes, creating challenges that don’t exist with established synthetic manufacturing.

As with conventional textiles, sustainability depends on the entire life cycle of a material — not simply where it originated. “Bio” doesn’t automatically mean environmentally friendly. Many biofabricated materials still require chemical treatments, coatings or additional processing to achieve the durability and performance consumers expect. Others rely on energy-intensive manufacturing or solvents to convert raw materials into usable fibres.

Bridging the gap

Perhaps the biggest challenge facing biomaterials isn’t the science. It’s the gap between the laboratory, the designer, the manufacturer and, ultimately, the consumer.

Fashion designers rarely begin with a sketch; they start with materials. The weight, flexibility, texture and behaviour of a material all influence what eventually becomes a garment or accessory. But most fashion designers rarely get the opportunity to handle or design with biofabricated materials.

The fashion industry doesn’t lack innovative new materials. It lacks the systems, supply chains and opportunities needed to translate these innovations into products that people can actually buy, wear and understand.

If biofabricated materials are to fulfil their promise, the question should not simply be whether they can replicate or replace materials such as leather. Researchers, designers and manufacturers need to understand where biomaterial properties offer something genuinely useful, how they can work within – or reshape – existing manufacturing systems, and whether they deliver environmental benefits across their entire life cycle.

The biofabricated fashion revolution may still be coming. But getting from the laboratory to our wardrobes requires much more than clever science alone.

The 'Disney Princess Complex' Could Endanger Wildlife

Let’s say you want to pick up an injured bird that crashed into your window. To your surprise, your reach isn’t met with squawks of protest or panicked flapping – instead, the bird calmly, silently accepts your help, even relaxing to the point of accepting food.

The experience might lead you to feel as if you’ve got a special connection to the creature, a bit like Snow White’s forest friendships in the Disney movie. Except it’s far more likely that the bird’s seemingly trusting stillness is actually a sign of dangerous shock or illness; feeding it in this condition is strongly discouraged.

On TikTok, wildlife educator Anna Henry has coined a phrase for this phenomenon: the “Disney princess complex”. (It had previously gone by the “Snow White syndrome,” but this is already a psychological term).

Here, HuffPost UK spoke to Anna and Dr Rebecca Machin, a wildlife expert at the RSPCA, about the issue.

What is a “Disney princess complex”?

Anna told us, “I use the term to describe when someone’s personal belief that they have a ‘special connection’ to wildlife is the very thing that causes harm to wildlife, either directly, or indirectly. The belief held is usually that their connection somehow makes them special or different than others.”

We’ve written before about how, for instance, becoming “friends” with a fox can actually put them in danger of being culled. And while hedgehogs might flock to a person who feeds them mealworms, too many can cause an agonising and fatal metabolic condition.

For her part, Dr Machin said: “Well-meaning intervention can sometimes do more harm than good, particularly when an animal’s behaviour is misunderstood.

“Wild animals can find being approached, handled or restrained extremely stressful. Signs that people might interpret as being calm or trusting could, in fact, be responses to fear and stress.

“It is also important to remember that not every animal found alone or appearing vulnerable needs human intervention. For example, young birds that have left the nest may spend time on the ground while their parents continue to care for them nearby. Approaching or moving them unnecessarily can be stressful for the birds and may put you at risk.”

So… does that mean I shouldn’t interact with or help wildlife?

Not at all! Both Anna and Dr Machin stressed that they understand and encourage the desire to feel part of the natural world – so long as we keep animal welfare front and centre in the enriching exchange.

“Part of it is the lack of education about how to treat wildlife, and another part I do feel partially has to do with our egos. That can be a very uncomfortable thing for us to confront,” Anna shared.

“In the wildlife field, it is absolutely drilled into your head that the animals you work with are not pets… they deserve to be treated with the utmost respect for what they are: wild animals. It’s a matter of safety for both parties involved, and quality of life for the animals being cared for.”

She added that it’s completely possible to feel a deep connection with animals without crossing any boundaries or falling under the umbrella of a “Disney princess complex”.

And Dr Machin stated: “We are so lucky to have such a diverse range of wildlife in the UK, and we understand that many people genuinely want to help animals when they believe they are in distress”.

It’s just that the way in which that desire manifests matters a lot to the creature in need. “Giving wild animals space, observing them from a safe distance and seeking expert advice when we are concerned is often the kindest thing we can do.”

How can I help wildlife in a sustainable way?

Luckily, the experts have found that most people really do want to learn more about how to help wildlife.

“I was putting off making the video [about the Disney princess complex] for a very long time because I was so afraid of the response, but it’s really amazing to see how many people are willing to have a conversation about this,” Anna stated.

“My hope is to change more attitudes towards how we view and treat wildlife. I also want to continue the conversation as much as possible.”

Helpfully, Dr Machin has some advice for those of us who see an animal in need.

She said: “If you find a wild animal that appears to be injured or sick, the best thing to do is seek advice from the RSPCA or a local wildlife rehabilitator before attempting to intervene. The RSPCA has advice available on how to recognise when an animal may need help and what to do.”

Some smaller animals and birds “may be suitable for members of the public to take to a vet where appropriate, but larger or potentially dangerous wildlife – including deer, badgers, foxes, seals and gulls – should not be approached or handled by members of the public”.

If you see one of those larger and/or less safe animals suffering, call your local wildlife rehabilitation or the RSPCA.

Dr Machin ended: “There are also lots of positive ways to support wildlife without needing to handle or get close to wild animals. Making your garden safer and more wildlife-friendly, putting out water, or volunteering can all be great ways to help.”

Even an old washing-up bowl reused in your garden can provide some welcome, and princess-free, relief.

‘Neighbour’s garden attracts rats and pests – I want to know my legal rights’

Published

on

Wales Online

One homeowner was left frustrated after finding rats in their garden, and they believed their neighbour’s chicken coop was to blame – but who’s responsible to get rid of them?

As summer draws to a close and the autumn months approach, you may notice an increase in rat activity in your garden – especially as the many heatwaves might have increased number of rats around.. Rat sightings peak between September and November in the UK, as the breeding season winds down and rats venture into homes in search of food and warmth as the temperature drops.

While there are various measures you can take to discourage rats from entering your garden in the first place, such as using natural repellents, it can sometimes feel unavoidable, particularly if they have already made their way into a neighbouring garden.

This was precisely the situation faced by one homeowner, who sought advice after repeatedly discovering rats entering their garden from next door, suspecting that their neighbour’s chicken coop was the source of the problem.

“During the day, I spotted two rats in my garden, seemingly sniffing around some of the flower beds,” they explained in a Reddit post. “I went outside to see where they may be coming from (one of them was brazen and didn’t disappear immediately when I went outside) and spotted two little tunnels dug under the neighbour’s fence through which they must have came through.”

They added: “My neighbours started keeping chickens in a chicken coop recently, and I can only assume the rats found some feed. In the five years we have lived in this house, we have never had any issues with rats or seen signs of them.”

They continued by questioning whether it would be preferable to speak to the neighbour about the problem, despite not enjoying the strongest relationship with them, or simply contact pest control to eliminate them.

Legal rights if rats keep entering your garden due to neighbour

You have the right to report a serious rat infestation to your local council’s environmental health department if it presents a public health risk or a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Section 79 of the act states that premises in such a state as to be prejudicial to health or a nuisance (such as from accumulated rubbish or poor waste management) allow councils to serve an abatement notice.

Meanwhile, the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 requires landowners and occupiers to keep their property free from rats and mice, giving local councils the power to take enforcement action.

As a homeowner, you are legally responsible for ensuring your own property does not attract or harbour pests, meaning you should avoid placing traps or poisons directly over the boundary line.

What to do if rats enter your garden from neighbours

One of the initial steps recommended if you discover rats coming into your garden from your neighbours is to speak to the neighbour in question about the matter, as they may not be aware of it in the first place. It is also worth examining your garden thoroughly to identify any gaps or potential entry points through which rats may be gaining access, thereby preventing any future occurrences.

This can involve sealing any holes, securing your bins, clearing away garden clutter, and ceasing to feed wildlife if it is attracting rodents to the area.

Should your neighbour decline to take action and the infestation begins to affect your health or immediate surroundings, contact your local authority’s environmental health team and present them with documented evidence.

Xabi Alonso wants players with ‘desire to play’ amid Enzo Fernandez speculation

Xabi Alonso wants players with ‘desire to play’ amid Enzo Fernandez speculation

Xabi Alonso said he wants players that “feel a desire to play” for Chelsea after Enzo Fernandez was left out of the squad for Thursday’s win over Luton.

It’s understood that there had been no formal contact from Manchester City over a proposed move for the Argentina international.

Chelsea’s asking price of £120m, placed on Fernandez in May after he told the club he wanted to leave, is also understood no longer strictly to apply following the expiry of a deadline for offers imposed by the club on 13 August.

Chelsea believe that market valuations have risen following a number of deals in the Premier League and in Europe struck for more than £100m. So far there have been three transfers for a fee exceeding that figure, set to rise again after Liverpool agreed a £120m deal with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola.

Should Fernandez be sold this late in the window, it would leave the club with very little to time to seek out a replacement and at risk themselves of being charged a premium by selling clubs, understood to be a further factor that could raise the price should City make their move.

The door is not closed on the player’s exit. Chelsea are open to his departure before Tuesday’s deadline but only if it leaves them with options to strengthen, likely meaning they will demand more than the £120m asked earlier.

Alonso has dismissed reports in Argentina that Fernandez asked not to be involved in the game against Luton, which the Blues won 2-0 thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck on his home debut and an own-goal by defender Hakeem Odoffin.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game at home to Brighton, Alonso said: “We need the players that are in the best situation to play.

“We need to take everything into consideration, players that are in good moments, players that are not feeling that energy to play. For me it’s very important that they feel that desire to play and to have good preparation.

“We talked, and we decided that (for Luton) it was better not to be part of the squad. He’s a top player, there’s no doubt about that.”

Asked whether Chelsea would re-enter the market before Tuesday should Fernandez leave, he said: “We have to be ready always.”

There has been a raft of departures from the club in recent days with defender Mamadou Sarr the latest to leave, joining Real Sociedad on loan. Liam Delap was sold to Nottingham Forest for £50m on Thursday.

Alonso, who previously said his squad size needed to be drastically cut, said: “We are quite close to the plan that we had. We will see where we finish, if it’s fully executed or there are some things still to be done.

“But overall the balance of what we have is going to be good. We need to see how the last few days develop.”

Lindsay Clancy jury's telling first question about Ziploc bags of medication on second day of deliberations: Live updates

The jury in Lindsay Clancy‘s murder trial were called back into court on Friday for a question as intense deliberations continue.

As jurors, family, and members of the public gallery returned to the courtroom, Judge William R Sullivan appeared to hold up two clear Ziploc bags of Clancy’s medication, suggesting the question was about her use of the prescription drugs.

Twelve jurors are deliberating the Massachusetts mom’s fate after the court heard closing arguments from the prosecution and defense yesterday.

A total of nine women and three men, selected from 18, will decide if Clancy is guilty of first degree murder, second degree murder, manslaughter, or not guilty by reason of insanity.

Clancy strangled her children Cora, 8, Dawson, 5, and Callan, eight months, to death at their family home in Duxbury in January 2023.

The former labor and delivery nurse has pleaded not guilty in her trial, citing postpartum depression and psychosis as a result of overmedication. Clancy had been prescribed at least 13 different psychiatric medications at the time of the killings.

Clancy and her ex-husband, Patrick, filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against her former care team as a result of the tragic incident.

Prosecutors are angling to convict Clancy on the basis that the killings were deliberate, and that the mom was in control of her actions in the moment.

Judge calls for a sidebar

Court briefly resumed, and the judge immediately called for a sidebar with the attorneys.

During the sidebar, Judge Sullivan held up clear Ziploc bags that appeared to contain Clancy’s medication as he spoke to the prosecutors and the defense attorney.

It seemed that the jury had a question about the pill bottles. They are not present in the room.

After speaking for approximately seven minutes, the sidebar ended, and the judge ordered the court in recess while deliberations continue.

Clancy’s prescriptions took center stage during the trial, where her defense argued she was suffering postpartum depression and psychosis as a result of overmedication.

Patrick Clancy and new wife’s secret crisis: As he weighs big move ahead of Lindsay trial verdict… those closest to him speak out

As Lindsay Clancy’s trial nears its end in Massachusetts, her ex-husband is hundreds of miles away trying to rebuild a life that keeps being dragged back into the spotlight.

Patrick Clancy, 38, was seen this week touring apartments in a quiet neighborhood of Manhattan as he and new wife, Dr Rachel Danis, seek to escape the glare of publicity.

What happened to the Clancy children?

On January 24, 2023, Clancy announced she’d had an exhausting day looking after their three young children so she asked husband Patrick if he didn’t mind going out on an errand. He just needed to pick up some children’s medicine and a takeout dinner order as she’d been too tired to cook, she told him.

Patrick, 36, who worked in software sales for Microsoft, was happy to oblige. But when he returned to their home in the well-to-do Boston coastal suburb of Duxbury less than an hour later at around 6pm, he discovered that their happy family existence had been snuffed out in an act of almost unimaginable violence.

After going upstairs to find his wife, who he imagined was giving the children a bath, he discovered their second-floor bedroom door was locked and had to force his way in. Inside, there was blood on the floor, a bloody knife on the nightstand and the room was chilly as a window had been left open.

He ran downstairs to find his wife lying barely conscious outside. She had cut her wrists and neck before jumping out of the window, falling some 20ft onto frozen ground. She told him she’d tried to kill herself, adding – when he asked – that the children were in the basement.

Patrick stayed by her side for the next 10 minutes after dialing 911, convinced that she might die before the paramedics arrived.

Only when they turned up did he hurry inside to find the children – five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and Callan, just eight months. They were indeed in the basement – they had all been strangled with resistance bands.

Legal experts warn of ‘disaster’ ending no one saw coming for America’s saddest trial

According to several legal experts who spoke with the Daily Mail, while many are asking whether the jury will deliver a verdict of guilty or not guilty, there’s a very real possibility that this high profile, tumultuous trial is heading towards a third outcome: a mistrial.

Apple Pay Casinos UK: Which Casinos Accept Apple Pay?

Apple Pay casinos are becoming increasingly prevalent due to the ease and security offered as a casino payment option for UK players.

UK online casinos can treat it much like a debit card or bank transfer, giving it an edge over e-wallets and making it a convenient option for Apple users.

The Standard has compared these casinos that accept Apple Pay based on deposit limits, payout speeds, fees and bonus eligibility. We also look at alternative casino payment methods that are available and compare them to Apple Pay.

Apple Pay is not a wallet that you load with money. It sits on top of a debit card you already have and lets you pay using Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode.

The casino does not receive your actual card number. Instead, Apple uses a device-specific number and a unique security code for each transaction. Apple does not charge consumers to use Apple Pay, although a casino or card issuer can impose its own fees.

UK gambling operators cannot accept credit card payments, so the card behind your Apple Pay account needs to be eligible for gambling transactions. Apple Pay requires a compatible Apple device.

Celine Dion returns to Paris for concerts after stiff-person syndrome diagnosis

PARIS (AP) — Celine Dion blew kisses and made a love-heart shape with her hands as she swept into Paris on Friday for her first series of concerts since revealing her diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome.

Fans yelling “We’re so happy to see you” and “We love you” crowded with journalists outside a Paris hotel as the Grammy-winning star settled in to prepare her residency of 16 shows in September and October at the Plenitude Arena in the French capital’s western suburbs. The first show opens on Sept. 12.

“I am ready and I’m a bit uptight of course because it’s been a long time,” she told French broadcaster BFMTV, wearing a beige trench coat, high heels and dark shades.

“I have always felt supported from the first day and because it’s a story that continues. It’s true that this is my second home,” the Quebec-born singer said.

Asked which song she’d sing first, Dion replied: “I can’t say, it’s a big secret!”

The Paris concerts, to be followed by 10 more next May, mark a major milestone for 58-year-old Dion after years away from touring due to the rare neurological disorder she disclosed in 2022.

With nearly 260 million albums sold worldwide, Dion remains one of the bestselling and most decorated artists in pop music history, known for hits including “My Heart Will Go On” and “Because You Loved Me.”

The concert series, titled “Celine Dion Paris 2026-2027,” will feature her catalog of hits in English and French.

Dion has largely stepped back from performing since canceling her Courage World Tour as her condition progressed. She wowed with a brief but widely watched return at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics in 2024, singing “Hymne à l’amour” (Hymn to love) atop the Eiffel Tower in the rain.

The Plenitude Arena has a capacity of 40,000 spectators and was one of the venues used for the Paris Games.

Trump to skip 9/11 remembrance at Ground Zero because they wouldn’t let him give a speech

Trump to skip 9/11 remembrance at Ground Zero because they wouldn’t let him give a speech

President Donald Trump reportedly plans to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at the Pentagon, not Ground Zero in New York City – in part because he cannot give a speech.

The president had initially intended to join former presidents and other officials in Manhattan on September 11, but those plans were changed after memorial planners seemingly reminded Trump’s team that politicians are barred from speaking at the site to maintain its nonpartisan stance, the New York Times reported.

Instead, Vice President JD Vance will represent the White House in New York City while Trump goes to the Pentagon, which also came under attack on September 11, 2001.

White House Spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement: “On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, the President will remember those who were killed at the hands of evil terrorists, honor their loved ones, and pay tribute to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line to rescue their fellow Americans.”

She added, “As a proud New Yorker, President Trump has spoken about his own experiences watching the horrific events of September 11, 2001.”

The president and First Lady Melania Trump also marked the September 11th anniversary at the Pentagon last year. At the memorial, Trump spoke about those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001, while peppering in brags about his administration and agenda.

“In America we take blows, but we never buckle. We bleed, but we do not bow, and we defy the fear, endure the flames and emerge from the crucible of every hardship stronger, prouder and greater than ever before,” Trump said during remarks last year.

The president then added: “Last year we were a dead country, now we have the hottest country anywhere in the world” – a statement he repeatedly shared during rallies and press conferences.

Later that day, Trump flew to New York City to attend a New York Yankees game.

Since 2012, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum has prohibited politicians from speaking at Ground Zero – the site of the Twin Towers.

That decision was made after a series of political battles over the construction of the memorial site angered families who felt the political issues were overshadowing the memory of those who died that day.

The last time Trump went to Ground Zero on September 11 was in 2024 when he joined then-President Joe Biden and other officials to remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack

The last time Trump attended a 9/11 memorial in New York City was during the 2024 presidential race when he joined then-president Joe Biden, then-vice president Kamala Harris and other officials at Ground Zero.

The politicians shook hands and stood side-by-side as they remembered the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attack.

This year, several notable politicians are expected to attend the 25th anniversary at Ground Zero, including former Mayor Rudy Giuliani; former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton; former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush; and former President Barack Obama, officials familiar with the planning told the New York Times.

There are other reasons the president will mark the day from Washington, D.C., instead of New York City.

The president is planning to travel to his golf course in Doonbeg, Ireland, the following day and it’s easier to leave from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland than the tri-state area airports, the New York Times reported.

Northwich shopkeeper guilty of sexually assaulting girl, 14

Furqan Khalil was convicted by a jury at Chester Crown Court following a four-day trial which concluded on Thursday, August 27.

Jurors found the 28-year-old guilty of one count of sexual assault relating to an allegation he touched the teenager’s bottom.

He was found not guilty of a second count of touching her leg and genitals. The offences related to an incident on February 3, 2024.

During the trial, the court heard, the girl entered Cheshire Mobile and E-Cigarettes in Market Way, Northwich, to buy a phone charger.

While in the shop, she also asked about buying a vape.

Prosecutors alleged Khalil touched the girl inappropriately while showing her a selection of vapes before telling her to wait outside because CCTV cameras were operating inside the premises.

Once outside the shop, the court heard he again behaved inappropriately towards the girl while discussing the vape purchase.

During the trial, the prosecution said the defendant suggested she carry out ‘favours’ in return for being sold the vape.

Instead, the victim’s friend attacked him, causing him to run back into the shop and lock up and leave quickly.

Khalil, of Rishton Lane, Bolton, was released on bail and is due to return to Chester Crown Court on Friday, October 9, for sentencing.

Following the verdict, Detective Sergeant Helen Harrison said: “I welcome today’s outcome and hope this conviction will provide reassurance to the victim, and local residents, and also acts as a warning to other people who feel it is acceptable to act in this manner.

“We treat all reports of sexual offences extremely seriously, and any allegation will be thoroughly investigated, with the wishes and needs of the victim our main priority.

“Victims should never feel ashamed to talk about what they have been subjected to.

“They will receive the help and support they need from our specialist officers, as well as from other support agencies we work alongside, and all victims of sexual offences have the right to anonymity.”
