Trump’s plan for a triumphal arch gets another review

Trump's plan for a triumphal arch gets another review

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s plans to build a skyline-altering arch in the nation’s capital is getting another review from the federal commission whose approval he needs, but the agency’s staff says the project should be revised before it gets the go-ahead.

The National Capital Planning Commission is meeting Thursday, and the Republican president’s proposed 250-foot (76-meter) arch is one of the items on the agenda.

In a report, the agency’s staff recommends that the commission approve the preliminary site and building plans for the arch. But the staff also recommends that the design be tweaked to comply with a federal law that limits building heights in downtown Washington to preserve the city’s famous skyline. The planning commission applies the law during its approval process.

“Staff suggests the Commission request the applicant revise the project design to comply with the Height of Buildings Act and return to NCPC for final approval,” the 185-page report says.

Applying the law “would require design revisions to redistribute the height between the main structure, habitable roof structure and statuary,” the report said. But even with the recommended revisions, the arch, a public observation deck and three gilded topper statues would still reach Trump’s desired 250-foot height, the report said.

The staff is also recommending that commissioners seek additional information about vehicular traffic around the arch, the proposed granite exterior and other aspects of the project before the Interior Department, which oversees the park service, returns for final approval. Trump wants to build the arch on a traffic circle on the Virginia side of the Memorial Bridge from the District of Columbia.

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, a separate federal agency, approved the design for the arch in May. The National Capital Planning Commission oversees construction on federal land in the city and began reviewing the arch plan in June.

Opponents of the project argue that the arch is too big for the skyline and would disrupt carefully designed views between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery that were meant to symbolize the reunification of the North and the South after the Civil War.

But the opposition has done little to influence the members of either commission, both of which include some of Trump’s closest allies. Trump appointed Will Scharf, a top White House aide, to lead the planning commission.

A group of veterans and a historian have sued the Trump administration in federal court to block the arch construction over concerns about disruptions to the sightline.

The arch would be more than twice as tall as the Lincoln Memorial, which is 99 feet (30 meters) tall, and close to half the height of the Washington Monument, at about 555 feet (169 meters) tall.

Trump had said last year that the arch could be paid for with unused funds from the hundreds of millions of dollars he said he has raised from corporations, donors and other wealthy people to pay to build a new $400 million ballroom at the White House.

But, as it turns out, some public money will be used for the ballroom project, as well as the arch. The White House has not released a cost estimate for the arch.

Bangladesh relocates refugees after landslide kills at least 5 children

Bangladesh relocates refugees after landslide kills at least 5 children

Authorities in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh used loud speakers and a network of volunteers and community leaders to relocate people from risky areas to safety Thursday after landslides killed at least 13 refugees in the past few days.

At least five children died Wednesday when a landslide caused by monsoon rains swept through an Islamic school at a camp in Cox’s Bazar, where more than 1 million Rohingya refugees from neighboring Myanmar live.

A teacher at the Islamic school described the scene from the landslide as chaotic, saying girls at the school were preparing for lessons when part of the building collapsed. “Those of us who were on the western side managed to get out, but everyone on the eastern side was buried under the debris,” said Begum Jahan, who teaches the Quran, Islam’s holy book.

“Some suffered broken arms, and some of the girls lost their lives,” she said.

People in the refugee camp started rescue operations before emergency services reached the scene, Dollar Tripura, head of the local fire service and civil defense, said Thursday. He added that emergency personnel later rescued the injured and recovered the bodies. The rescue operation was called off Wednesday evening.

Jamal Hossain, a Rohingya volunteer who helped in the rescue effort, said people rescued at the scene were sent to hospital and those that died were all women.

“However, we do not know whether there are any more bodies buried underneath,” he said.

Authorities in Cox’s Bazar said they were relocating refugees from at-risk hilly areas and that more than 1,000 people were already evacuated. They said the refugees are often reluctant to leave their makeshift homes despite warnings.

The Bangladesh weather office is forecasting more rain in the coming days.

Sunday night into Monday, landslides killed at least eight people at Rohingya camps in the area.

Local media reported at least 22 people died in the delta nation of 170 million people in landslides and wall collapses over the last three days. The death toll included the casualties at Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar, the country’s leading Bengali-language Prothom Alo daily reported.

Bangladesh has urged the international community for years to help the country begin repatriation of the refugees to Myanmar, but the process is stalled.

New Barkers exhibition in Northallerton celebrates family legacy

The Barkers History Gallery, located inside the home store on Yafforth Road, tells the story of the fifth-generation business, one of the area’s best-known retail names.

It traces its journey from its origins as Oxendales Drapery through to the present day, offering visitors a window into more than a century of retail and family history.

Mr Sunak, MP for Richmond and Northallerton, said: “Barkers is a truly iconic business.

“The exhibition helps to explain why it has been central to the economy of the town for generations and is so well loved by its customers and also the many loyal staff who have worked there.

“It is vital that we celebrate and cherish family businesses like Barkers and the new gallery does that in an informative and entertaining way.”

The exhibition features a curated collection of documents, photographs, and artefacts, much of which has never been seen by the public before.

One of its centrepieces is the original Barkers delivery bicycle from the 1950s, now suspended from the ceiling.

Other highlights include vintage shopfront signage from the 1950s and 1960s, original press clippings, historical documents, and a digital slideshow of key moments in Barkers’ history.

William Barker, part of the fifth generation of the family to work in the business, said: “While our focus remains firmly on continuing to develop and grow the business, we also believe it is important to reflect with pride on where it all began.

“This gallery honours our family’s history and the generations who have helped shape the business over the years.

“We are deeply proud of the legacy they have built, and sincerely grateful to our customers for their continued support throughout the years.”

Mr Barker said the idea for the gallery originated with the late Charles Barker, who amassed a large archive of photographs and newspaper articles documenting the company’s past.

Visitors can browse a selection of original newspaper prints covering major moments in the retailer’s development, along with displays of the iconic “Outfitters” and “Furnishers” signage that once adorned the shop front.

Enlarged reproductions of historical articles and a coffee table display of books on Northallerton and the surrounding area add further context to the exhibition.

The gallery has been created by William Barker, great-great-grandson of the founder, also named William Barker.

The Barkers History Gallery is now open to visitors inside Barkers Home on Yafforth Road as a permanent display.

Jackdaw boss warns of winter fuel shortages if gas field not approved

Published

on

Climate activists stand outside a wrought-iron fence holding flame-shaped placards and signs opposing North Sea oil and gas projects, including Rosebank and Jackdaw, while pedestrians walk past in the foreground.

McCulloch said: “If I were the secretary of state for energy security and net zero, I’d be looking closely at where’s my next source of energy security, and you’re standing on it.

“The wells are drilled, they’re hooked up. We’re just readying the systems. It will be ready for the 1st of October.

“Jackdaw will play a vital part of this winter’s gas supply,” he added, providing energy security, employment and taxation to the UK.

Environmentalists say Jackdaw will only produce 2% of the country’s annual gas demand during the lifetime of the field.

“It would be a huge betrayal of the British public for the UK government to approve new oil and gas fields at a time when ordinary people are suffering so much as a result of these record-breaking heatwaves,” said Tessa Khan, executive director of the campaign group, Uplift.

In response McCulloch said: “So we all watch the same news, and we see that.

“But what we’re saying is that Jackdaw should not take that on its shoulders, or it should take a very small portion of that.

“It’s a very, very small proportion of the total global emissions.”

Where are the cast of The Office now? As BBC comedy celebrates its 25th Anniversary with new special, how stars of the cult hit have had mixed fates (and VERY unlikely glow-ups!)

Published

Iconic BBC comedy The Office has celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a new special, which saw Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook reunite for the first time in 15 years

Iconic BBC comedy The Office has celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a new special, which saw Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook reunite for the first time in 15 years.

Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the mockumentary followed staff at fictional paper company Wernham Hogg in Slough and made household names of many of its stars.

After two series and a Christmas Special, the show came to an end in 2003, and went on to spawn a hugely successful US series, which ran for nine seasons.

Remember… The Office offered fans a glimpse at Martin and Mackenzie’s careers since the show, and some stars have indeed gone on to have impressive career upgrades with big roles in Hollywood films.

However, others have been less successful, even battling bankruptcy after appearing in the show.

So with the doors to Wernham Hogg now closed for more than two decades, here’s how stars of The Office have fared since the cameras stopped rolling…

Ricky Gervais (David Brent)

Ricky, 65, created The Office alongside Stephen Merchant and the pair also co-directed the series.

The funnyman played the role of the world’s most cringeworthy manager, David Brent who is best known for his bizarre motivational speeches and awful dancing – a character he revived for a 2016 film.

In fact, Ricky’s iconic dance in the show has been voted as its greatest moment, and during the anniversary special.

To mark the occasion a bust of David Brent has been unveiled at a Premier Inn in Slough, with the hotel acting as the place where the original Office paper company Wernham Hogg stood.

After ending the series on a high, the pals went on to create and star in series Extras, where Ricky played a supporting artist and Stephen his hapless agent. And despite its huge success they again only decided to make two series.

They then joined forces to create a vehicle for Warwick Davis with Life’s Too Short which lasted for one season.

Has fame from The Office helped or harmed its stars in the long run?

Since then Ricky has branched out by himself and has become one of the world’s most famous and successful comedians.

After a stint in films including The Invention of Lying and Night At The Museum franchise, he created Netflix sitcom After Life, winning numerous awards for his acting and writing.

He has hosted the Golden Globes five times and numerous comedy specials and is believed to be worth a whopping £100M.

Ricky has never shied away from towing the line with his stand-up shows, and he is set to go on tour next year with his most controversial set yet, featuring jokes on a raft of shocking taboo topics, including Jimmy Savile, suicide, and Hitler.

Despite being one of The Office’s main stars, Ricky declined to take part in the BBC’s Anniversary Special, and has instead announced he is recording his own that will be released on his YouTube channel.

Mackenzie Crook (Gareth Keenan)

Mackenzie, 54, played the role of jobsworth and boss’ pet Gareth Keenan in the popular series – and his character was hardly the epitome of cool style.

Bumbling around the Wernham-Hogg office in oversized suits as he sucked up to Gervais’s David Brent, Gareth Keenan was the butt of most jokes in the workplace – notably being pranked in the pilot episode when co-worker and arch-rival Tim put his stapler into a plate of jelly.

Following The Office, he has since showcased his talent behind the scenes and secured a BAFTA nod for his own BBC comedy The Detectorists which ran from 2014 to 2022.

Following The Office, he has since showcased his talent behind the scenes and secured a BAFTA nod for his own BBC comedy The Detectorist which ran from 2014 to 2022

The actor also appeared in the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise as no-good seaman Ragetti – and carved out a new image as a rugged wayfairer.

Elsewhere, he popped up in Game Of Thrones’ third season as a Warg (a character with the ability to enter the minds of animals) before taking on the iconic role of Worzel Gummidge in the 2019 remake.

Mackenzie reunited with Martin to appear in The Office reunion special, with the pair admitting it was the first time they’d been together for over a decade.

Martin Freeman (Tim Canterbury)

Martin, 54, played the role of lovable office worker Tim who eventually found love with co-worker Dawn (Lucy Davis) in the finale after two series of will-they-won’t-they tension.

Since then Martin has cemented himself as a Hollywood star, appearing in a string of big-budget films.

Since then Martin has cemented himself as a Hollywood star, appearing in a string of big-budget films

Following his appearance as Dr John Watson alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock in the BBC series, he was cast as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit movies, which grossed a whopping £1B at the box office.

He then went on to play Everett K. Ross in Marvel movies Black Panther and it’s sequel Wakanda Forever which themselves raked in an incredible £200M.

Martin also earned critical praise for his turn as PC Chris Carson in BBC drama The Responder, earning a BAFTA nomination in 2023.

He also had a leading role in the Sky comedy Breeders, which concluded with its fourth series in 2023.

While Martin was known for his role as awkward Tim, he has undoubtedly undergone an impressive glow-up since appearing on the show.

He’s bulked out for his recent role in Miller’s Girl, displaying noticeably bigger biceps in X-rated scenes with co-star Jenna Ortega, 21, that have been branded ‘gross’ by viewers who were left horrified by their 31-year age gap.

Wednesday star Jenna plays 18-year-old student Cairo Sweet in the black comedy drama, while Martin takes on the role of her teacher Jonathan Miller.

The film sees the two getting tangled in a very complex and inappropriate relationship, with Cairo choosing to pen a sex story after being given a creative writing assignment by Jonathan.

Raunchy scenes from this story are then played out on screen by Jenna and Martin – leaving viewers in uproar over the ‘uncomfortable’ age gap.

Lucy Davis (Dawn Tilsley)

Lucy made a name for herself as receptionist Dawn who pined for her co-worker Tim, leaving fans begging for them to get together.

The daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, she promptly left Blighty and headed off to work across the pond.

Lucy has popped up with appearances in Wonder Woman, Ugly Betty, Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Brit zombie flick Shaun Of The Dead.

She also played Eva in Disney Channel’s action comedy series The Villains of Valley View, which premiered in 2022.

She has since settled in LA and looks almost unrecognisable after taking up weightlifting following her battle with bulimia.

Lucy previously opened up about her experience with bulimia, which was at its worst when she was going through her divorce from husband Owain Yeoman in 2011.

She said during a 2017 interview with The Telegraph that after years of living with an eating disorder she’s realised that ‘whatever your body’s meant to be, it will figure itself out… it’s been a journey’.

‘In my 30s, I would have hated to look like this,’ she added. ”I probably wouldn’t have gone out much. I’d diet for a week and then eat all the food I hadn’t consumed in the previous seven days in a single day.’

The actress, who even enrolled in Overeaters Anonymous, went on: ‘Now, I think I’m just normal. But my head didn’t think that then. This period of binge and purge was at its worst when my marriage came to an end.’

Ewen MacIntosh (Keith Bishop)

Ewen became a fan-favourite as Keith, the straight talking office employee who left viewers in stitches.

But the actor sadly died in 2023 at the age of just 50, with his passing confirmed on by JustRight Management.

Mr Scott, the CEO of Dodged A Bullet Music, added: ‘Ewen was so full of empathy, kindness, and integrity and above all a really good man.

‘Sending love to his parents Sara and Ewen Sr, his brother Colin and his family, as well as his many friends and fans.

Despite only limited screen time his memorable performance led to roles in EastEnders, Little Britain and The Lobster opposite Olivia Colman and Colin Farrell.

He also reprised the character in the 2016 David Brent movie and starred in Ricky’s Netflix series After Life.

However he also hit on hard times and in 2016 was forced to declare bankruptcy.

“Monster!” Child killer Rosdeep Adekoya removed from house in Glasgow after baying mob gather

Rosdeep Adekoya was led from the property in Glasgow by a number of police officers.

Child killer Rosdeep Adekoya removed from house in Glasgow

Cops removed child killer Rosdeep Adekoya from a house in Glasgow after it was swarmed by protesters. Adekoya, 41, beat her son Mikaeel Kular, three, to death before hiding his body in a suitcase in January 2014.

She was sentenced to 11 years in jail but served just six before her release from Cornton Vale in April of 2021. Protesters turned up at the house in the city’s East End on Monday night after being alerted by locals and demanded that she was removed from the area.

Footage shows Adekoya being led out of the house in the Greenfield area by uniformed police officers on Monday, July 6. Two women are by her side but their identity remains unclear.

She is led into the back of a police car before it sped away from the area and locals can be heard heckling. One yelled “you f***ing monster” and another shouted “child killer.”

Speaking to the Record a local source explained Adekoya had been in the area for months.

He said: “She has been here a good few months but was rarely seen in public. Some locals knew she was here but once the wider community found out about this it was just a matter of time before something like this happened.

“There are loads of kids living in this street and there is a swing park right next to where she was living so people just weren’t going to tolerate her living here.

“Word had been spreading online about her but thankfully the protest was fairly peaceful so we just hope she isn’t returned and we can move on from this.”

After her release from jail, she failed in a court bid to win lifelong anonymity after a legal challenge led by the Daily Record.

Adekoya raised a petition at the Court of Session in a bid to win lifelong anonymity similar to James Bulger killers Robert Thompson and Jon Venables. She argued her safety was at risk due to media reports but was unable to provide evidence of threats.

Adekoya admitted the culpable homicide of her three-year-old son. The Crown dropped a charge of murder against her, saying they accepted she had no intention to kill.

She battered Mikaeel viciously and repeatedly, inflicting more than 40 wounds. Adekoya allowed him to die in agony over three days in January, then dumped his body and reported him missing, setting off a huge search.

The High Court in Edinburgh was told he was left to suffer because she refused to get him medical help, fearing her cruelty would be exposed. After his death, Adekoya stuffed his body in a suitcase and drove close to her former home in Kirkcaldy, Fife, where she dumped it.

Parkers Piece toilets set to reopen ‘as soon as possible’

Cambridge City Council’s cabinet approved ‘the immediate reopening of as many individual toilets at Parkers Piece as feasible’

Cambridge City Council has agreed to reopen some public toilets “as soon as possible” as part of a deal made with opposition parties. Labour lost their majority in the local elections and – after initially facing deadlock when trying to form a cabinet – struck a deal with the Lib Dems and Greens.

This included re-opening the public toilets at Parkers Piece, improving street cleaning and cracking down on antisocial behaviour. Cllr Martin Smart, cabinet member for nature, open spaces and city services said they’d closed the toilets “in good faith” and “there were, and continue to be, pressures” on finances “that need careful management”.

The Labour council told the cabinet meeting: “Employing extra cleaning staff on a different shift can be challenging to do and in the most effective way but we’ll do our best in that regard. We aim to get on with this work as soon as possible and will pursue that goal.”

He added that the Quayside public toilets would also reopen, though this was decided beforehand.

Cllr Tim Bick, leader of the Lib Dem group, said it had been a “long time” since resources for street cleaning and public toilets were increased and “it’s a delight to see there may be a consensus that now more is needed – and it can happen.”

He said the council “ought to have a common interest” in making sure services are “at a desirable level for the long term” ahead of a new unitary authority being created under local government reorganisation.

He said: “If we don’t bring into the unitary something that we can be really proud of, then I think we’re going to be struggling with these services from the start.”

Part of the public toilet proposals is to install bank card readers, rather than using coins, as “essential to the long-term viability of pay-to-enter public toilets”.

Cllr Naomi Bennett, leader of the Green group, said: “We know that many people don’t carry cash anymore – however, we’d like to understand why it’s thought that a bank card reader would be an improvement.

“Under 18s visiting the city centre on their own are unlikely to have bank cards with them and overseas visitors may have bank cards which are not compatible with UK payment software or may experience disproportionate transaction charges.”

Cllr Smart said that coin-operated systems are “increasingly difficult to operate” with falling cash usage and “are labour intensive to maintain and have historically been vulnerable to vandalism, theft and mechanical failure”.

He said: “However, members are right to highlight that not everyone has access to a bank card or compatible payment method. Accessibility considerations would form an important part of any future proposal on charging and would need to be addressed before any decision was brought back to members.”

Cllr Kathryn Fisher said: “I think it’s clear that Mill Road has been overlooked for a number of years with very little investment.”

The Green councillor said she had “countless emails” from residents “explaining that they’re seeing public defecation in the cemetery” while the nearby public toilets remain shut.

Cllr Smart said this was “concerning” but that there are ongoing issues in Mill Road Cemetery that are “wider than just the provision of public toilets”.

He said reopening the public toilets off Mill Road wasn’t before them but “wider questions about individual sites such as Gwydir Street will continue to be considered”.

The cabinet approved “the immediate reopening of as many individual toilets at Parkers Piece as feasible following condition and compliance checks”, the hiring of four temporary street cleaning staff and two temporary enforcement officers.
