The Met Office posted their latest take on when the weather will cool down.
Fresher air and some rain are in store for Sunday.

Provisional figures show overnight temperatures in Cardiff did not drop below 23.5C, exceeding the previous record of 22.7C set in 1976.
But this record could be broken again tonight.

At least two hospitals declare critical incidents amid heatwave
At least two hospitals have declared critical incidents amid a rare red warning for extreme heat and record-breaking temperatures.
Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust both declared critical incidents on Wednesday.
It comes as a new record high temperature has been set for June on Thursday, for the second day in a row, as the UK swelters in a heatwave.
Queen Alexandra Hospital said it declared the critical incident after the “failure of several chiller units supporting critical infrastructure during the ongoing heatwave”.

It added that some planned care and appointments have been stood down until the issues are resolved.
In an update on Thursday, the trust said that while the chiller units were up and running, the exceptionally hot weather has meant that cooling down vital infrastructure was taking much longer than normal.
The trust said it has extended the critical incident to allow it to “bring services back online in a safe and controlled way”.

‘Politicians are playing with people’s lives’: Campaign group calls for government to act on climate change
The government must put the public’s need for cheaper bills and a safe climate ahead of the profits of oil companies, a campaigning organisation has stated.
Robert Palmer, the deputy director of Uplift, which supports the transition away from oil and gas production, said: “Politicians are playing with people’s lives.
“We smashed the June heat record yesterday and are set to break it again today. This morning the papers are reporting the devastating impact of this heat: one in six babies are living in overheated homes, hospitals are canceling operations, 10 people have been taken to hospital after being stuck on the red hot M25. We’re seeing a meltdown in normal services, including shut schools, halted trains and struggling care homes.
“This is the impact of climate change, right on our shores. Yet we have politicians going out to bat for more North Sea oil and gas drilling, which is the very thing driving climate breakdown.
“The huge Rosebank oil field isn’t compatible with safe climate limits or the UK’s commitments to tackling climate change.
“Politicians need to wake up to the reality that the rest of the country is facing, which is that climate change is already disrupting lives – and act on it. Whoever leads our country must decide to put the public’s need for cheaper bills and a safe climate ahead of the profits of oil companies.”

Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust both declared critical incidents on Wednesday.
University Hospital Southampton declared a critical incident on Thursday afternoon because of the ongoing extreme heat, “which is placing significant pressure on our services”, it said.
The hospital had to cancel a number of planned operations as well as some outpatient appointments.
Chiller units failed and MRI scanners were unable to operate across several hospitals.

Critical incidents can be declared when health and care services are so busy that special measures are needed to restore normal operations and keep patients safe.

Do hot drinks cool you down in a heatwave?
The Independent’s Albert Toth writes:
Studies show that hot drinks can surprisingly reduce body temperature – but no more than cool drinks.
A 2016 study by Loughborough University found that a key factor in which is better depends on the environment. Researchers found that hot drinks increase sweat production, and so in moderate, dry heat can leave people feeling cooler long-term as this evaporates from the skin.
But in hotter and more humid conditions, it is usually preferable not to sweat excessively, as this can lead to “inefficient sweat losses” which will affect overall hydration.
And this is key – staying hydrated is one of the most important things in hot weather, with more liquid than usual required to prevent dehydration.
Overall, the difference between ingesting hot and cool drinks is minimal, although cooler drinks will likely provide more immediate relief. What’s most important is drinking plenty of liquid to aid general hydration.

Morrisons has issued an urgent recall on a fan-favourite pasta product due to an undeclared allergen risk

An urgent recall notice has been issued for a popular pasta product sold at Morrisons over an undeclared allergen risk, according to the UK Food Standards Agency.
The supermarket is pulling its Coronation Chicken Pasta from shelves after it emerged that some packs may contain Florida Salad, which includes milk that is not listed on the packaging.
This means the product poses a potential health risk to anyone suffering from an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents. The specific batch affected weighs 230g, carries an expiry date of June 30, 2026, and has the batch code GBB 584 031.
Shoppers who have purchased the product and have a milk allergy or intolerance are urged not to eat it and to return it to their nearest store immediately.
The Food Standards Agency has issued a recall notice stating: “Morrisons is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.

“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”
For full details on all product recalls, the Food Standards Agency and Chartered Trading Standards Institute websites are trustworthy sources of information.
In addition, recall notices should be prominently displayed in stores where a product has been withdrawn from sale, reports Chronicle Live.
A boy aged 14 has been charged with murder by Gwent Police after a female body was found during the search for a girl missing in south Wales.

The white British boy was arrested after the body was found in the Duffryn Park area of Blaina on Monday.
The body has not been formally identified but police believe it to be that of a girl, 14, named only as Lilly, who had been reported missing.

As the 2026World Cup moves through its third game week, teams are starting to secure their spot in the knockout rounds.
12 teams have made it to the round of 32 – which is a new round of games due to the 48-team expansion of this World Cup – so there are still 20 spaces up for grabs.
Another change this tournament is how the group tables work: they are decided on head-to-head results, rather than goal difference, so several teams secured their place as group winners after only two games.
Here’s who has booked their knockout-stage spot…
Advertisement
Which teams have qualified for the knockouts?
Co-hosts Mexico won Group A and qualified for the last-32 with ease after winning all three of their World Cup group games for the first time in their history. They kicked off the tournament with a 2-0 win over South Africa, before narrowly beating South Korea 1-0 to secure their status as group winners. For their final game they handily beat Czechia 3-0. Their round-of-32 game is on Tuesday, June 30 at the Azteca Stadium against one the eight best third-placed teams from Group C, E, F, H or I.
Fellow co-hosts USA started with a surprise 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay – thanks to a Folarin Balogun double – before a comfortable 2-0 victory over Australia secured their status as Group D winners. Their final game against already-eliminated Turkey on Friday is a dead rubber, so expect wholesale changes. Their round-of-32 game is on Wednesday, July 1, in San Francisco against one of the eight best third-placed teams from Group B, E, F, I or J.
Surprise package: Folarin Balogun has three goals at this World Cup

Germany, managed by Julian Nagelsmann, were the biggest winners of the first gameweek with a 7-1 win over Curacao, but needed a late Denis Undav goal to squeeze past Ivory Coast 2-1 and win Group E. Their last game, against Ecuador, takes place tonight. Their round-of-32 match is Monday, June 29, in Boston – they play one of the eight best third-placed teams from Group A, B, C, D or F.
Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick inArgentina’s 3-0 opening win and a double in the 2-0 victory over Austria to move him top of the World Cup scoring charts on 18 goals and win Group J with a game to spare. They play already-eliminated Jordan on Sunday in another dead rubber. Their round-of-32 is on Friday, July 3 in Miami when they play Group H runners-up. This, as it stands, is Uruguay, who face Spain in their last game.

France opened their campaign with a frenetic 3-1 win over Senegal, before comfortably beating Iraq 3-0, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a brace in both and moving to 16 World Cup goals – just two behind Messi. They have qualified for the round-of-32, but their place as Group I winners is not confirmed yet: they are yet to play their final group opponent…
…which is Norway, who are at the World Cup after a 28-year absence. They swatted away Iraq 4-1 and beat Senegal 3-2 in a topsy-turvy affair to reach the knockouts. Like Mbappe, Erling Haaland scored a brace in each to mark his debut World Cup. Their final match is against France, in a winner-takes-all clash for top spot.
Colombia may have emerged as another contender to go very far in North America. 3-1 winners in their opening Group K game against Uzbekistan, they followed that up with a 1-0 win over DR Congo to seal a place in the knockout stage. Avoid defeat against Portugal in the final group game and they will progress as winners.

Murat Yakin’s side Switzerland have won Group B after defeating co-hosts Canada 2-1, following on from a draw with Qatar and victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina. Their round-of-32 opponent will be against a third-placed team from Group E, F, G, I or J in Vancouver on Thursday, July 2.
Co-hosts Canada drew with Bosnia and thrashed Qatar 6-0, but the 2-1 loss to the Swiss in their final game means they failed to secure a home draw for their last-32 match. They will play their knockout in Los Angeles (instead of Vancouver) against South Africa on Saturday, June 28. This is the first time the Maple Leafs have ever reached the knockout rounds.
Bosnia & Herzegovina are through as one of the eight best third-placed teams thanks to a draw with Canada and 3-1 victory over Qatar. Their opponent and date of last-32 match is unconfirmed: teams yet to play their final game, so the third-place table is still in flux.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazilbeat Group C opponents Scotland in a comfortable 3-0 win, as Vinicius Junior scored a brace and Neymar made his first appearance at this World Cup. The Selecao qualified as group winners, so their knockout game is in Houston on Sunday, June 29 against the Group F runners-up. This is currently Japan.
Morocco were almost shocked by already-eliminated Haiti, but eventually secured a 4-2 win to finish runners-up to Brazil, after a draw with the five-times winners and a 1-0 victory over the Scots. They face the Group F winners – currently the Netherlands.
South Africa have qualified to the knockouts for the first time in their history: they looked set to head home late on against Czechia, but that 1-1 draw and shock 1-0 over South Korea puts them through as runners-up in Group A behind Mexico. Bafana Bafana are confirmed to be facing Canada on Saturday, June 28 in Los Angeles.
Ivory Coast are also into the World Cup knockout stages for the very first time after beating Curacao and they have been joined by Ecuador after they came from behind to beat Germany and qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Archie McPherson has covered six World Cups for the BBC and was highly critical of the performance of the current team.
19:31, 25 Jun 2026Updated 19:59, 25 Jun 2026
Legendary Scots broadcaster and football commentator Archie McPherson has slated Scotland’s performances at this year’s World Cup describing them as “the worst ever”
In a series of blistering comments McPherson said the current team had insulted the memory of great players of the past.
He made the remarks following Scotland’s 3-0 defeat to Brazil in Miami adding that they had “no right” to be there.
McPherson, 89, covered Scotland’s participation in six World Cups between 1974 and 1998 for the BBC.
In a social media post the former Sportscene presenter said: “The Scotland side I saw being comfortably beaten by the Brazilians last night is the worst ever to have represented our country at the World Cup.
“Yes, we had disappointments in the past, which I closely witnessed six times through the years.
“But the almost feverish efforts to equate our presence in the States as being of potential historical significance invested qualities in Clarke’s side they simply did not possess.
“That was evident in every single game. But not only that , it was blindly ignoring the detailed reasons why we failed in the past in that special tournament.
“Thus insulting the memory of some our great players like Dalglish, Jordan, Bremner, Gemmill etc.
“We had our faults certainly. But never did I feel ,as I did last night, that this Scotland team were simply trespassers with no authentic right to be there.”
In the 1996 film adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s cult novel Trainspotting Macpherson re-voiced his commentary of Archie Gemmill’s famous goal for Scotland against the Netherlands at the 1978 World Cup as a sex scene.
A public-spirited van driver pulled over to offer armed Kent Police officers a lift during a dramatic chase in Margate, helping them apprehend a suspect wanted in connection with a serious assault. The incredible moment was caught on officers’ body-worn cameras.

Remarkable footage has captured the moment an ordinary member of the public played a pivotal role in helping armed officers apprehend a suspect in Margate.
The van driver who provided the spontaneous lift to armed officers during the pursuit in Thanet, Kent, has since been widely praised for his actions.
The gripping footage, recorded on police body cameras, opens with the shout: “armed police, stay where you are.”
Armed officers from Kent Police had been responding to reports of a serious assault when a wanted suspect managed to slip away and fled on foot, heading towards Tivoli Road.
Footage from one officer’s body-worn camera captures the moment the van driver pulled over to assist the armed officers in their pursuit of the fleeing suspect.
As he drew up alongside them, the driver told the officer: “Get in the back.”
The officer obliged and leapt into the black minivan, leaving the sliding door ajar to guide his impromptu chauffeur.
The officer can be heard shouting: “Go, go, go! Cheers buddy. Follow that police officer.”
As the driver accelerated in the direction of the officer still pursuing the suspect on foot, the policeman continued to bark instructions, urging him to overtake both the fleeing man and his colleague.
The driver brought the vehicle to a sharp halt when ordered to stop, allowing the officer sufficient time to get ahead of and corner the fleeing suspect. The armed officer then leapt from the vehicle, trained his weapon on the suspect and made the arrest.
The driver, who has not been named, stood nearby watching the dramatic scene play out before him, before officers showed their appreciation with a firm handshake.
The van driver said: “I am just glad I could be of service. That was quite exhilarating.”
Following the dramatic arrest, Kent Police’s Armed Policing Superintendent Will Lay paid tribute to the unnamed man for his vital role in the operation.
“Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver, officers were able to apprehend the dangerous individual,” Supt Lay said.
“The successful arrest may not have been possible without the member of the public and his vehicle.
“He should feel proud of his contribution to keeping his community safe, and we are truly grateful for his assistance.”

Gwent Police have now charged a 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, with her murder.
A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “Gwent Police has charged a 14-year-old boy with murder as part of our investigation in Blaenau Gwent.

“The teenager from the Blaenau Gwent area, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded in police custody to appear before Newport Magistrates Court on Friday 26 June. The white British boy was arrested after the body of a female was found in the Duffryn Park area of Blaina on Monday 22 June, at about 10.10pm.
“While formal identification has yet to take place, the body is believed to be Lilly, a 14-year-old girl who was reported as missing.
“We are releasing Lilly’s name at this point, with her family’s knowledge, because it will form part of the court proceedings and be a matter of public record.”
Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Lilly at this difficult time. We understand that there has been a great deal of interest in this ongoing investigation.

“It is vital that people consider how their language, especially comments made online, could affect our ability to bring anyone found to have committed a criminal offence to justice. Even though we’ve reached this significant development in our investigation, our enquiries continue and you will still see a significant police presence in the area.
“Examinations of scenes will be continuing over the coming days, including at Duffryn Park, where cordons remain in place. I would like to thank local residents for their continued support and those impacted by the cordons for their patience during this time.”
Jenny Hopkins, of the CPS, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Gwent Police to charge 14-year-old boy with the offence of murder. The defendant cannot be named for legal reasons.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this person are now active and that they have a right to a fair trial. It comes as the region recorded its hottest June day in 50 years on Thursday
Temperatures are set to remain high across Northern Ireland amid a warning for thunderstorms, with cooler conditions expected over the next few days.
The Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorm is in place from midnight to 10am on Friday, June 26, after days of high temperatures.
Issuing further detail about the warning, a spokesperson for the forecaster said: “A few heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to move north across parts of Northern Ireland during Friday morning.
“Whilst some places will miss them, where they occur hail and frequent lightning are likely along with rainfall totals of 15-20 mm in less than an hour.”
Looking ahead to Friday afternoon, the Met Office said the weather will “become brighter from the south but still some showers around. Warm and humid.” The maximum temperature is expected to reach 26 C.
As for the outlook from Saturday to Monday, the forecaster added: “Dry, bright start Saturday but occasionally heavy rain spreads east in afternoon. Sunday and Monday look much cooler with sunny spells and showers and an occasionally fresh southwesterly breeze.”
Despite Northern Ireland currently experiencing a heatwave, the region hasn’t been feeling the same heat as other parts of the UK. Parts of England and Wales are currently facing a red extreme heat warning.
They said: “Much of the heat and the hottest temperatures that the UK experiences come from mainland Europe… as Northern Ireland is mostly coastal, this keeps temperatures here relatively cooler than further southeast.”
Northern Ireland reached its heatwave criteria on Wednesday by exceeding 25 C for three days in a row in Castlederg.
On Thursday, Northern Ireland recorded its hottest June day in 50 years, with 30.8 C at Castlederg, matching the June record set in 1976. The all-time record for Northern Ireland remains 31.3 C which was recorded in Castlederg in July 2021.
On numerous instances has the same type of goal flown in during the first two rounds of the group stage. They all relate to rising, driven shots that go above shoulder height, and are often not heading right for the top corner. Goalkeepers are diving across to save these shots and are crucially getting a hand to the ball – but when they make contact, it’s not in the right place and the ball simply passes through, as if they’ve misjudged the flight.
You can point the finger at the keepers’ inadequacies if you like, but those in the know think something greater is at play.
“I’m seeing this goal way too many times for a World Cup for there not to be something up with that football,” former England international goalkeeper Joe Hart said in a piece of passionate half-time analysis during France’s 3-0 win over Iraq on Monday night. “As soon as they’re not using the curling technique, as soon as that ball is not moving, it’s not spinning, the goalkeepers are struggling.”

World Cup 2026: USA v Turkey head-to-head
This will be the fourth time the USA and Turkey have played, but it will be their first competitive encounter.
They previously met twice in pre-World Cup friendlies, with the USA winning 2-1 in May 2010 and then again in early June 2014.

Turkey won their last encounter, though, also a 2-1 victory last June. Turkey were one of the fancied sides before the World Cup but have been disappointing.
Is Turkey v USA on TV? Channel, kick-off time and how to watch World Cup 2026 match
USA look to round out their group-stage campaign with a third win from as many games, as the World Cup co-hosts take on the already-eliminated Turkey.
Expectations around USA were measured coming into this tournament, but Mauricio Pochettino’s team have gotten off to a flying start, dismantling Paraguay 4-1 before seeing off Australia 2-0.
Meanwhile, Turkey fell 2-0 to Australia in their opener before losing 1-0 to 10-man Paraguay in their next game.
In the US, the game will air live on Fox and Telemundo. ITV1 and ITVX will show the action in the UK.

USA v Turkey: Getting closer to kick-off
It’s been a dream start to the World Cup for the United States. With excitement around the USMNT growing, can they continue their momentum against Turkey in Los Angeles to bolster their emerging status as tournament contenders?
The USA, on paper, have nothing to play for. After wins over Paraguay and Turkey, they are safely through to the knockout stages as winners of Group D. Turkey, too, have no skin in the game. They are already out after two defeats.
But the USA will want to fuel the belief that this could be a special summer, as Mauricio Pochettino’s team returns to the So-Fi Stadium in Los Angeles, the scene of their impressive opening victory over Paraguay.
Kick off is at 5pm PT / 7pm CT / 8pm ET, which works out to 3am BST.

Mauricio Pochettino set to rest key players who are on yellow cards
For the USMNT tonight, some team news decisions are blindingly obvious. Four key players – Folarin Balogun, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams and Chris Richards – are a booking away from being suspended for the last-32. Expect them to watch on from the bench.
“I think it’s an easy answer for the guys that have yellow cards,” Mauricio Pochettino said, at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday. “I think it’s unnecessary to take a risk and then take another yellow card and be not available for the next stage. I think that is a little bit of a normal and easy answer to not play with them from the beginning.”
Jamie Braidwood26 June 2026 00:59

It’s clear where the USMNT’s priorities lie
Such has been the USA’s dominance in Group D and the questionable tie-break switch from goal-difference to head-to-head top spot is already wrapped up.
Contrastingly, Thursday’s opponents at the Los Angeles Stadium, perennial underachievers Turkey, are guaranteed to finish bottom even if they thrash the US later tonight.
It makes the contest a largely unsatisfying dead rubber, even in an expanded tournament where third-place could be enough for a knockout berth.
But for Mauricio Pochettino, it’s less a dead rubber and more a free hit. While there will be temptation to maintain the status quo and a perfect group-stage record, the US boss is set to rotate his starting XI.
They already know their last-32 match-up will be in Santa Clara next Wednesday against a high-ranked third-place team (which would currently be Bosnia and Herzegovina). Rest and rotation are clearly the priority.

USMNT star Christian Pulisic hoping to play a part against Turkey
Christian Pulisic said he was feeling positive about his recovery from a calf injury and hopes to play a role in the United States’ final World Cup group match against Turkey on Thursday, though his availability remains uncertain.

“I’m feeling good,” Pulisic told reporters at the U.S. training camp on Wednesday. “I joined with the team in the last few days, so I’m feeling good, feeling positive, and hopefully I’ll be able to play a part tomorrow.”

Will Christian Pulisic return for USMNT after calf injury?
The major question revolves around USA star Christian Pulisic, who was substituted at half-time in their opening win over Paraguay before missing the victory against Australia altogether.
“It was impossible for him today to play,” Mauricio Pochettino said, referring to the forward’s hamstring injury. “We hope that next game he will be available, but if we want to win the competition, we need the whole team. All of the players need to be important but of course Christian is one of the best players in the world and I hope that he can recover as soon as possible and can show it on the pitch and help the team.”
Four men were involved in the fight, North Yorkshire Police has said, outside Porto Pizza in Windsor Terrace, Whitby at around 7.20pm on Tuesday (May 26).

Call the Midwife star Laura Main has opened up about her new role as a carer for her 91-year-old mum
23:17, 25 Jun 2026Updated 23:22, 25 Jun 2026
Call the Midwife star Laura Main has revealed the conclusion of the beloved series has allowed her to become a carer for her elderly mother. The popular actress explained the programme’s break has given her the freedom to take on this role, saying her “heart went out” to those in caring positions.
Speaking at the TRIC Awards, she explained: “I’m a carer now. Right now, my mum is my priority. She is 91 and needs support. For 15 years I was doing Call The Midwife, but I’ve now had a change to the rhythm of my life. Because we aren’t filming a new series, I’m have the chance to do this, so it’s good timing.”
The 48-year-old, who portrayed Nurse Shelagh Turner, described herself as “blessed” to spend more quality time with her mother. She continued: “Being a carer is an incredible job. We are having such a nice time. We get on so well. It’s lovely. I feel really blessed to be able to give this time to my mum. She gave her life to her family.”

She also praised the BBC1 programme for highlighting the caring profession. Laura added: “On Call The Midwife we’ve represented nurses, midwives and the care community and it’s an extraordinary thing to help one another.
“My heart goes out to people who are carers for years and years. They should get as much support as possible. They do an incredible service that people need at certain points in their life or throughout their life. It’s about supporting one another.”
Laura revealed her upcoming role will be portraying Sleeping Beauty in this year’s Christmas pantomime, reports the Mirror. She admits: “I love doing that. My sisters said to me: ‘You can’t down tools completely, you’ve got to keep going’.”

Call the Midwife received a nomination for Best Drama at Tuesday’s lunchtime ceremony, ultimately losing to Adolescence. Hosted by TRIC President Dan Walker, the occasion honoured excellence across television, radio, streaming and online entertainment, with winners predominantly chosen through public voting.
The period drama has consistently ranked amongst the BBC’s five most-watched dramas annually from 2012 through to 2026 thus far.
A prequel series titled Call the Midwife: Sisters in Arms was announced last week, set in wartime Poplar during the Second World War.

Jenny Agutter, narrating the three-part series, reprises her role as Sister Julienne, alongside Helena Wilson, who portrays her younger self.
Amy Booth-Steel assumes the part of Sister Evangelina, previously portrayed by Pam Ferris, who died on screen in series five in 2016. Helen Schlesinger takes over from Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan, while Dr. Patrick Turner, famously embodied by Stephen McGann, represents another familiar character.
Straight out of medical school, he is now portrayed by Ben Rose. Fred Buckle, another Poplar fixture played by Cliff Parisi, will be portrayed by Ciaran Bowling in the Christmas prequel.
