The director of a controversial drama about the British Raj has called for the UK to pay India trillions in compensation for what he calls ‘200 years of enslavement’.

Nikkhil Advani, director of The Revolutionaries, which dramatises the violent exploits of a group of Indian ‘freedom fighters’, said he hoped the series would ‘highlight the atrocities’ inflicted by the British.

Advani admits the abhorrent behaviour of the show’s main character, based on the real-life Colonel Reginald Dyer, was portrayed as worse than it was in order to help whip up sympathy for the payment of reparations to India, which it has been suggested should be up to $56trillion (£41trillion).

The eight-part drama, streaming on Amazon Prime, does not hold back on depictions of cruelty. In the opening scenes, a character looks through a book of sketches depicting acts of brutality, which come alive as animations.

One page shows a platoon of British soldiers marching through a wasteland of dead bodies, while another shows soldiers bayonetting the bodies of civilians.

The captions read: ‘They established the Empire on Indian corpses… But our soil witnessed everything.’

Advani, 55, an award-winning Bollywood director, said: ‘I am an Indian who basically feels that the colonisation of 200 years and enslavement of 200 years was a catastrophic time. 

‘More than 100 years later we are still reeling under the fact we were raped, pillaged and plundered – that $56trillion is owed to us.’

The show’s decision to choose Colonel Dyer as a representation of the British Empire is likely to prove particularly controversial.

Dyer ordered British troops to open fire on thousands of unarmed civilians at Amritsar in 1919, killing 379 and leading to him being known as the ‘Butcher of Amritsar’.

In the show, he is shown on horseback dragging a prisoner behind him, and firing a cannon with a prisoner strapped to the muzzle.

Advani has admitted it was ‘not a fair depiction’, but insisted he was using Dyer ‘as a representative of the retribution that happened’ during the Indian uprising.

Historian Jeremy Black accused Advani of offering a ‘clearly prejudiced’ history of the Raj.

He said: ‘In practice, the British Raj relied heavily on Indian cooperation.’

The data, analysed by Tempcover and sourced from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), covers cars stolen between January 1 and June 30.

Electric and hybrid vehicles showed up in increased numbers in the overall top 20, which marked a shift in theft patterns.

For the whole of 2025, no fully electric cars were in the top 20, but four are included for the first half of 2026.

However, one car model topped the rankings for being the most stolen, and had a bit of a gap to second place.

What was the UK’s most stolen car in the first half of 2026?

The Nissan Juke Tekna CVT was the most stolen car for the first six months of 2026, with 197 thefts recorded.

This put it 37 ahead of the second most stolen model, the Toyota C-HR Dynamic HEV CVT, which saw 160 thefts.

Jake Lambert, temporary insurance expert at Tempcover, said: “This goes beyond just one car model; it signals a distinct tactical shift in vehicle crime.

“While high-value cars remain targets, the DVLA data highlights the heightened security risk facing mass-market keyless vehicles.”

Discussing why the Nissan Juke Tekna CVT might have topped the list, Jake explained: “High-volume crossovers like the Juke Tekna sit right at the intersection of widespread road presence and accessible technology.

“Because the Tekna is a high-spec trim, it features keyless entry and push-button start as standard, leaving it exposed to relay attacks, where thieves intercept fob signals to bypass the immobiliser.”

He noted the risk is not unique to the Juke, but common across most modern keyless vehicles.

Jake added: “High production volumes simply mean more cars on the road running the same technology, which pushes them higher in the national statistics.”

How to stop your car from being stolen

Some criminals use relay attacks to unlock cars, so you can combat this by placing the keys inside a metal box or signal-blocking wallet to block the signal.

The RAC also recommends parking in a well-lit public area to reduce the chances.

It adds: “If you need to use a car park, try to find one that’s security patrolled, covered by CCTV, or that is in a secure area.”

Utilising a steering lock or brake lock can also be helpful, and it could be useful to install a tracking device in case a thief gets away with your car.

Jake shared: “With pure EVs entering the top 20, security must keep pace with the tech.

“Beyond Faraday pouches and parking nose-in to block wiring access, EV owners must secure their companion app.

The remote Yorkshire Dales farm provided the backdrop to Channel 5’s Our Yorkshire Farm, with cameras documenting everything from lambing and snowstorms to raising nine children miles from the nearest large town.

Amanda, the Yorkshire Shepherdess, and her former husband, Clive Owen, became household names, along with their nine children: Raven, Reuben, Miles, Edith, Violet, Sidney, Annas, Clementine and Nancy.

But what is the famous farm actually like away from the television cameras?

Ravenseat is a sprawling hill farm covering around 2,000 acres in Upper Swaledale, one of the most remote parts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The traditional stone farmhouse is surrounded by fields, barns, dry-stone walls and open moorland.

It is not simply a picturesque television location.

Ravenseat remains a working sheep farm, with the seasons dictating the family’s routine.

Television viewers have seen the family lambing, shearing, making hay, feeding livestock and battling winter weather.

The isolation that viewers see on screen is also very real.

Ravenseat is around three-and-a-half miles west of the tiny village of Keld and is approached through miles of rural Upper Swaledale countryside.

Its remote position brings fast-changing weather, with snow and treacherous conditions repeatedly testing the Owen family on screen.

The old farmhouse has historic significance, too.

Ravenseat Farmhouse is a Grade II-listed stone building with a traditional stone-slate roof.

But for Amanda, the farm has always meant far more than its buildings.

The Owen children grew up there, surrounded by animals and helping with farm work from an early age.

That unconventional upbringing became one of Our Yorkshire Farm’s biggest attractions after its launch in 2018.

Viewers watched the children round up sheep, ride horses, operate machinery and head across the Dales.

As the children grew older, Ravenseat remained the link between their increasingly separate lives.

Raven has pursued a career in science but still returns to the farm.

Reuben turned his childhood love of machinery into a contracting business and television career, while Miles remains deeply involved in farming.

Sidney, too, has increasingly worked alongside his older brothers.

The younger children are now learning the farming skills viewers watched Raven, Reuben and Miles pick up years ago.

Ravenseat’s surroundings are familiar territory for walkers, too.

The Coast to Coast route passes nearby, while Keld and upper Swaledale offer waterfalls, moorland and traditional stone barns.

The landscape has become a character in the Owen family’s programmes in its own right.

Our Yorkshire Farm ended after five series, but Ravenseat stayed on television.

Amanda, Clive and their children returned in More4’s Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids.

That programme centres on the restoration of neighbouring historic farmhouse Anty John’s, but everyday life at Ravenseat continues to feature alongside the building work.

The latest series shows the family juggling the renovation with livestock, sheepdog training and other farm work.

More than eight years after Our Yorkshire Farm began, Ravenseat remains at the heart of the family’s story.

Anty John’s may be the new project and the Owen children may be forging lives of their own, but Ravenseat is where the television phenomenon began.

Ravenseat was closed to public access in 2022 and now operates as a private family farm, although walkers can still use public footpaths in the surrounding area.

The world-famous competition returns to Bridge Street on Sunday, September 13, with competitors battling it out by throwing black puddings at Yorkshire puddings perched on a 20ft-high plinth.

To accommodate the event, five roads will be affected, with closures in place between 7am and 8pm.

The full list of affected roads is:

• Bridge Street – between Crow Lane and Bolton Street.
• Square Street – between Smithy Street and Bridge Street.
• Silver Street – from Bridge Street for 30 metres southbound.
• Crow Lane – on the east side, between Church Street and Athol Street.
• Ramsbottom Lane – on the east side, from 118 metres north of Bridge Street to Factory Street.

Visitors heading into the town are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys because of the closures.

The 2026 championship will take place from 11am until 5pm, according to organisers.

The quirky competition dates back to 1984 and has become one of Ramsbottom’s best-known events.

There is a small entry fee for those wanting to take part, while this year’s event is raising money for Bury Hospice and Ramsbottom Pantry.

Emergency services were called to the collision on the A64 at Grimston Bar at around midday on Saturday (September 12).

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it received a report at 12.04pm that a man had “fallen from a motorbike”.

“We dispatched one ambulance to the scene and the patient was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary,” an ambulance service spokesperson said.

Drivers reported delays in the area after the crash, which came as traffic built on routes around the Hopgrove Roundabout following a road closure.

Malton Road, the A64 and the York Outer Ring Road, on all sides of the roundabout, are facing strain over the weekend due to the closure of the northbound lane of the nearby Monks Cross Link for works associated with the building of around 970 homes, as part of the Monks Cross Garden Village development.

It comes as thousands of football fans prepared to travel to the LNER Community Stadium, next to the disruption, where York City face Swindon Town at 3pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, temporary traffic lights have been installed in nearby New Lane, off Malton Road, over the weekend as Yorkshire Water works to fix a burst main.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said its contractor, M Group, is “working as quickly as possible to repair a burst water main and return the highway to normal”.

But they said the work has been “exacerbated by an existing lane closure on Monks Drive, north of LNER Community Stadium, which is currently diverting traffic onto New Lane”.

The company spokesperson said anyone travelling by road to the York City and Swindon Town match should “allow extra travel time for delays”.

“The manned two-way lights will remain in place over the weekend to keep everyone safe,” they said.

“We appreciate that this will be disruptive and would like to thank everyone for their patience as we undertake this work as quickly and as safely as possible.”

Ben Delo may have handed over a record-breaking £36million political donation, but the crypto billionaire is known for living far more modestly than his extraordinary fortune might suggest

You’d assume the man behind the single largest-ever political donation makes a habit of splashing his cash.

But apparently this couldn’t be less true of Ben Delo. The UK’s youngest self-made billionaire, 42, reportedly enjoys nothing more than using special-offer vouchers to pay for his McDonald’s meals. He once admitted to owning just three pairs of shoes – trainers, leather brogues and flip-flops.

He used to spend weekends dressing up as kids’ book character Where’s Wally. And he converted a large windowsill in his Hong Kong flat into a single-bed Airbnb, to cover some of the rent. Delo came from semi-humble beginnings. The eldest of four siblings, he was born in Sheffield around the time of the miners’ strike to mum Claire, a teacher, and dad Andrew, a civil engineer.

He was the class clown at school, which got him kicked out three times, and he was later diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.

He recalled in a 2016 interview: “The head teacher, when he kicked me out, said he had aged two years in those three months. I was then out of school for the rest of that year.” The family later relocated to Thame, Oxfordshire, where Delo went to comprehensive Lord Williams’s School.

It was here that his dreams of earning big bucks began – he used his home economics classes to make pizzas to flog to pupils and teachers. And at 16, he wrote about wanting to be an “internet entrepreneur, millionaire [and] computer programmer” in an annual pupil review.

This new-found confidence ramped up when he got a place at Oxford to study maths and computer science. Fellow students recall he once turned up to a formal dinner wearing a wetsuit with his gown – the rules stipulated a gown and a “suit”. After short spells at the US Patent and Trademark Office and several hedge funds, he founded the crypto currency trading platform BitMEX in 2014.

Four years later, the Times named him the UK’s youngest self-made billionaire. Things looked bad in when in 2022 he was convicted in the US for failing to implement adequate anti-money laundering controls in BitMEX… but luckily, President Trump pardoned him in 2025.

Once a Tory Party donor, billionaire Christopher Harborne has already given millions to Reform UK over the years. The crypto tycoon is estimated to be the sixth-richest UK billionaire, with a personal fortune of around £18.2bn.

Over the past seven years, Harborne had given more than £22million to Reform, accounting for two-thirds of all funding received by Nigel Farage’s party. Before he matched Ben Delo’s £36million donation, Harborne’s £9million had been the largest single amount ever given by a living donor.

According to his lawyers, Harborne is an “intensely private person” and has given no public explanation of his reasons for donating. Crypto currency has turbocharged Harborne’s wealth. He is one of half a dozen owners of crypto firm Tether, which is often branded the most profitable company per employee in history.

Harborne grew up in Mosborough, a village near Sheffield. Mark Vellacott, a close friend of his late sister Katharine, once said that he was similar in character to his mother Joan, a Yorkshire woman who was from a well-off background.

Aerospace businessman Vellacott said of Harborne: “Chris does not like anything that’s going to control him.”

After private school in Westminster, Harborne followed his father Edgar to Cambridge, where he studied engineering and rowed for his college. Moving to Thailand in 1996, Harborne joined a market research firm owned by a member of the powerful Bulakul family. Later, he made his first political donation – some £10,000 to the Tories.

Harborne’s lawyers have said in court filings that he has given money to various groups, including victims of the 2004 tsunami and remote Thai tribes.

It was the romantic liaison between an aristocrat and glamorous socialite that scandalised high society. 

John Seymour, the 19th Duke of Somerset, was revealed by The Mail on Sunday in 2019 to have enjoyed a three-year affair with Eliza Dugdale, despite being married to Judith-Rose for more than 40 years. 

Divorcee Ms Dugdale had been forced to leave her farmhouse near the Duke’s estate in Wiltshire and move to Spain after knowledge of the affair became public. 

Now the MoS can reveal that after seven years living abroad, Ms Dugdale, 67, has returned to the UK. The Duke, 73, helped her move into a secluded property around 20 miles from Bradley Park Estate, his family’s 300-year-old seat.

The Duke is understood to be paying the rent for her detached four-bedroom house, which is around a mile from the nearest public road, and regularly visits her there. The pair also enjoyed a three-week holiday together earlier this year in Argentina and are said to attend lunches and dinners in Wiltshire as a couple.

‘It’s an open secret,’ one source close to the couple said. ‘Some locals, who didn’t know them well, assumed it had fizzled out but I think they’re genuinely in love.

Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess still share a home on their estate and together host some of polite society’s most prestigious events. As patrons of the so-called ‘London Season’, they attended the Queen Charlotte’s ball earlier this month. Founded more than 200 years ago, the event involves the ‘coming out’ of around 30 affluent young women into high society.

Ms Dugdale’s first husband was huntsman Robin Smith-Ryland, who is often considered an inspiration for Rupert Campbell-Black, the hero of Jilly Cooper’s ‘Rutshire’ novels.

The pair divorced in 1985 and she later married Richard Grosvenor Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, the former Tory MP.

In 2019, Ms Dugdale confirmed the relationship, saying: ‘I love John and he loves me – we have had some great times together. His wife knows everything because he has confessed to her.

‘He is a man of honour so I now realise that he will never leave his wife.’

Ms Dugdale last week denied that she is in a relationship with the Duke and that he pays her rent. The Duke did not respond to a request to comment. 

Brad Pitt kept his girlfriend nearly three decades his junior close after his children’s public estrangements from him and ex-wife Angelina Jolie’s recent boastful statements about her relationship with their kids.

The 62-year-old A-lister – who attended a screening in Los Angeles on Tuesday – was seen arriving at JFK Airport in New York City hand-in-hand with 33-year-old girlfriend Ines de Ramon on Friday.

They each donned very different looks with distinct vibes for the day of travel as Pitt donned a grey cropped jacket and matching baggy pants combination.

He also donned a yellow checked flannel which was fringed along the hemline over a grey T-shirt and yellow sneakers.

Pitt donned a backwards cap and finished off the look with metal-framed aviator shades.

His partner de Ramon looked chic in a silky white flowy blouse and bottoms combination.

Her raven-colored tresses were worn down in a middle-part as she donned dark black aviator shades. 

This comes after Pitt’s ex Jolie recently boasted about her warm bond with her children in the wake of the fresh knife-twist of their estrangement from him.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Pitt’s representative for comment but has not yet received a response.

Her children, she said, are ‘definitely individuals,’ which ‘makes me very proud, because one of the most important things, I think, is to basically not get in their way.’

Jolie continued: ‘As a parent, you try to do many things, but you also try to not get in the way of this human being who has a life separate from yours and so much potential in their own mind. You want to make sure that you support them.’

The Daily Mail has contacted a representative for Pitt for comment. 

Jolie also clarified her previous comments that she had refrained from weeping in front of her children until she made her 2024 Maria Callas biopic Maria. 

‘To be clear, I don’t think any mother has never cried in front of their kid. If they give me a birthday card, I cry,’ she said in her new interview with a laugh. 

‘I’m kind of famous for quickly crying. But that wailing emotional pain is certainly what I would hide from my children until Maria. It’s upsetting to see somebody you care about in that much pain,’ the Changeling star explained.

She raved about enjoying a ‘wonderful shoot’ in the company of her children while directing her 2024 war drama Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek.

‘We were in Italy. We were in the same place, but everybody had their own separate [living space] so we weren’t living in a family house together. We were living in a dorm-type situation and everybody was exploring Europe, so that was nice.’

Jolie also waxed rhapsodic about visiting Zahara, whom she adopted from Ethiopia, at the historically black Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.

‘I just felt so deeply honored to be a part of it,’ said Jolie. ‘I came in knowing that she belonged and it was a special place for her. I didn’t assume I would be as welcomed and educated and supported as I was. There’s no place that would’ve been better for her – it really transformed her and it’s really a part of our family now.’

She recalled being taken ‘aside’ and apprised of the significance of Zahara becoming a member of the historically black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.

‘I didn’t know what that really meant, but they talked to me about how it was for life. It’s an extraordinary place,’ said the Tomb Raider star.

‘Our family felt so proud of her, so honored to be a part of it and to feel like we were welcomed into something that is very special, unique and important.’

With all her children reaching adulthood, Jolie shared that she was ‘looking forward to more connection and community’ as an empty nester.

‘I’m not somebody who vacations or shops or things like that. I envision more field work, more travel, and just being out in the world. Get my motorcycle back, get back in a plane. I don’t know,’ she mused.

‘That’s definitely what my kids want! They had Mom when Mom needed to be Mom. Now, they’d like me to call them from Tunisia having just landed a plane to meet with local artists. I agree that would be very nice.’

Pitt was subjected to a new humiliation last month when Vivienne, one of his two youngest children, took out an ad in the Los Angeles Daily Journal announcing that she had filed a legal petition to switch her surname from Jolie-Pitt to Jolie. 

Court documents obtained by the Daily Mail state Vivienne is making the change for ‘personal’ reasons, formalizing a swap she had put into practice years earlier.

In the Playbill for a 2024 Broadway production of The Outsiders, on which she was credited as a producer alongside her mother, she was written up as Vivienne Jolie.

A source close to Jolie insisted: ‘If people knew the whole truth, they would have more sympathy for the children and respect them,’ via People.

‘The fact they aren’t speaking ill or sharing things publicly only shows their decency. Angie hasn’t been fighting and isn’t angry. She just wants everyone to heal.’

Meanwhile, an insider recently informed the Daily Mail that Pitt ‘believes Angelina’s role in how things unfolded is the ultimate betrayal.’ 

‘Brangie’ plunged into a seething feud after their split, and over the course of their divorce battle she accused him of being abusive, which he firmly denied.

The former couple infamously fell in love during the making of their 2005 movie Mr & Mrs Smith while he was still married to his first wife Jennifer Aniston. 

Jolie, the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, maintained that she did not have an affair with Pitt while he was with Aniston.

‘To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive,’ she said on Today. ‘I could not look at myself in the morning if I did that. I wouldn’t be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife.’

Fans around the world began siding with ‘Team Jolie’ or ‘Team Aniston,’ as a furor erupted over the love triangle with Pitt at its center. 

Pitt and Jolie married in 2014 but split two years later, triggering an explosive legal battle over money and custody that rages on to this day. 

Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in September 2016, after a mysterious dispute on a private plane in the presence of Maddox, who was then 15.  

Early in the proceedings, the FBI looked into allegations that Pitt became ‘physical’ with Maddox on the jet, but the investigation was closed with no charges filed. 

Jolie leveled sensational accusations about Pitt’s behavior during the 2016 private plane flight in a court filing she submitted in 2022.  

‘At one point, he poured beer on Jolie; at another, he poured beer and red wine on the children,’ she alleged in her court documents.

A source close to Pitt retorted: ‘All parties have had this information for nearly six years and was used in previous legal proceedings. There is nothing new here and serves no purpose other than being a media stunt meant to inflict pain,’ via CNN.

Pitt quit drinking in the wake of his split from Jolie, but confessed this summer that after seven years of sobriety he was ‘back off the wagon,’ via Esquire.

In court papers she filed in April 2024 in connection to a property dispute, Jolie accused Pitt of having been abusive to her ‘well before’ the plane ride. 

Meanwhile, Pax suffered a terrifying accident when he crashed his dirt bike into a car in Los Angeles while not wearing a helmet in July 2024.

Sources informed the Daily Mail that Jolie was ‘by his side in hospital,’ while Pitt was ‘distraught and worried over Pax’s accident, but he is unable to reach him.’

The accident came four years after Pax unleashed an explosive social media tirade calling his father a ‘world-class a**hole’ and a ‘terrible and despicable person’ who had caused his four younger children to ‘tremble in fear.’

However, a source alleged this summer that Pax still meets with his paternal extended family and has not filed to excise Pitt from his name, according to Page Six. 

Jolie and Pitt are also still entangled in a legal conflict over the Chateau Miraval, the winery they once shared as a couple in the South of France.

The feud over the property stems from the fact Jolie sold her half to Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler for $67 million in 2021, amid her divorce proceedings.

Shefler presides over a vast international alcohol empire including Stolichnaya and once sold a superyacht to Saudi crown prince Mohammad bin Salman. 

Pitt sued Jolie over the Chateau Miraval sale, insisting she was contractually obligated to obtain his consent as co-owner before offloading her portion.

Jolie has brought up her abuse allegations and custody battle over the course of her years-long battle of wills with Pitt over the winery.

She has asked Pitt to ‘end the fighting’ and drop the Chateau Miraval lawsuit against her so that their family can have a chance to ‘heal.’

Jolie has also alleged that her decision to sell her stake was partly motivated by the impact of Pitt’s ‘acknowledged problem of alcohol abuse on their family.’ 

Dental issues can feel easy to shrug off.

In fact, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures estimate as many as one in three Americans – or 100 million – don’t get regular dental checkups, leaving issues such as tooth pain and puffy gums to linger undetected.

But an increasing body of research shows the mouth is a crucial indicator of overall health – often showing the first signs of chronic and debilitating conditions such as infections, diabetes, heart disease, liver disease and even some forms of cancer. 

‘The mouth is the one part of the body where a doctor can see bone, soft tissue, blood supply, and bacteria at the same time without cutting anything open,’ Dr Yev Davydov, general dentist and owner of Chroma Dental in New York City, told the Daily Mail.

‘It is also the entry point for everything you eat, drink and breathe. Whatever is happening in the rest of the body tends to show up there early.’

The mouth is home to billions of healthy and harmful bacteria. When gums become inflamed or bleed, bacteria seep into the blood vessels and carry germs to major organs such as the heart. 

And while bad breath may be easy to blame on eating too much garlic or smelly fish, it may be a sign of harmful infections and uncontrolled health conditions.

Below, dentists have revealed to the Daily Mail the dental woes that should never be ignored.

Tooth pain

‘Contrary to many people’s beliefs, tooth pain is a late signal, not an early one,’ Davydov said. ‘By the time a tooth hurts, the problem has usually been building for months or years.’ 

Davydov explains that bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and starch, producing acid that, along with the bacteria, forms a sticky film on the teeth called plaque. 

If that plaque is not removed through cleaning, it hardens into tartar that dissolves enamel and forms a tiny hole in the tooth, otherwise known as a cavity. 

Early cavities are painless and likely to go unnoticed unless a dentist spots them during a regular cleaning. As the decay worsens, sensitivity to cold and sweets may begin. Pain, however, typically starts once the decay reaches the nerve.  

Dr Kami Hoss, orthodontist and founder and CEO of SuperMouth, cautions that once the affected nerve dies, pain may disappear, but that does not mean the threat is gone. 

‘Left alone, that becomes an abscess, a pocket of infection in the jawbone with open access to the bloodstream,’ he told the Daily Mail.

‘That is no longer a dental problem. It is a chronic infection in the body.’

That infection can spread directly to the jawbone, surrounding teeth, sinuses and soft tissues in the face and neck.  

Untreated dental infections have also been linked to a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease and dementia due to chronic inflammation and the bacteria hardening arteries, making cells resistant to insulin and triggering damage in the brain’s memory centers.

The CDC estimates about one in five adults ages 20 to 64 have at least one untreated cavity. 

‘The practical point is simple. A cavity caught early is a small filling,’ Davydov said. ‘A cavity caught late is a root canal and a crown, or an extraction and an implant. 

‘Pain is the body telling you that you have already skipped the cheap option and the dentist is now trying their best to perform damage control.’

Swollen or bleeding gums

‘If your hands bled every time you washed them, you would see a doctor that afternoon. Yet millions of people see pink in the sink every night and call it “sensitive gums,”‘ Hoss said. 

‘Gums are not sensitive. They are inflamed, and inflamed gums mean the barrier between your mouth and your blood has already been breached.’

Puffy and bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease, or gingivitis. In the early stages, regular brushing and flossing can alleviate this, but if the issue persists for multiple weeks, it may be a sign of more advanced disease, known as periodontitis. 

‘The bacteria move below the gumline, the body’s inflammatory response starts destroying the bone that holds the teeth in place, and that bone does not grow back,’ Davydov said. 

‘This is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it is almost entirely preventable if treated early.’

He also notes that the ‘systemic links are well documented.’ Periodontitis has long been associated with higher rates of heart disease, stroke and poorly controlled diabetes.

Severe gum disease triggers a constant immune response, raising inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and cytokines, which over time damage blood vessels, raising blood pressure and potentially cutting off blood flow to the heart and brain.

Chronic inflammation from infected gums also makes the body less responsive to insulin, which may worsen diabetes.

‘Gums that swell, turn purple or bleed far more than the plaque would explain can also be the first visible sign of leukemia or a clotting disorder, and bleeding that comes with bruising, fatigue or fevers is a doctor visit, not just a dental one,’ Hoss said. 

He suggests in addition to visiting a dentist, people with bleeding gums should use a toothbrush with soft bristles to reach the gumline and floss regularly.  

Loose teeth

While losing your teeth is a rite of passage in childhood, in adulthood, ‘a loose tooth is always a problem,’ Davydov told the Daily Mail.

‘Teeth are anchored in bone by a ligament. If a tooth is loose, something has damaged the bone, the ligament or both,’ he added. 

Tooth loss is normally caused by advanced gum disease, in which chronic infection over several years has eaten away at the bone, leaving it unstable. 

Davydov notes it may also be due to teeth grinding at night, which puts excess force on teeth that supporting bones are not equipped to handle, leading to teeth loosening over time. 

‘Once a tooth is loose from bone loss, it is on a path to being lost, and the bone around it keeps shrinking after the tooth is gone,’ he said. 

‘That is why people who lose teeth to gum disease also lose the option of easy implants later. There is not enough bone left to put them in.’ 

In rare cases, a loose tooth that has no obvious dental cause such as grinding or gum disease may be a sign of a tumor or cyst in the jaw. 

‘Tumors and cysts in the jaw, both benign and malignant, can destroy bone and loosen teeth from the inside,’ Davydov said. ‘Certain cancers that spread to the jaw present the same way. 

‘A single loose tooth in an otherwise healthy mouth, with no gum disease and no history of trauma, needs imaging and a proper diagnosis. It should never be dismissed.’

Lingering bad breath or taste

It’s common for strong foods like garlic and fish to cause smelly breath for a few hours. 

But if foul breath doesn’t go away after brushing, it’s ‘a diagnosis waiting to be made, not a hygiene failure,’ Hoss told the Daily Mail. 

Bacteria that gets trapped under the gums, within deep cavities in the crevices of the tongue or around a crown or filling produce sulfur compounds, creating a foul smell.

Hoss also notes a common cause is the tongue, which many people neglect to clean with a dedicated tongue cleaner. 

‘Dry mouth is the most underestimated cause of all,’ he said. ‘Saliva is the mouth’s immune system: it buffers acid, rebuilds enamel and washes bacteria away, and hundreds of common medications, mouth breathing and alcohol-based mouthwash all reduce it.’

Additionally, a persistent bad taste ‘can also point beyond the mouth,’ Hoss notes. 

Sjögren’s disease, an autoimmune condition that damages moisture-producing glands, has been shown to cause dryness in the mouth, causing microbes to multiply and result in bad odors.

Kidney disease also results in a failure to filter waste products from the blood, leading to a buildup of toxins called urea. When urea enters the saliva, it breaks down into ammonia, which causes a sharp odor.

Persistent mouth sores

Most sores in the mouth are canker sores, painful ulcers that usually come from biting the cheek, but in some cases, they could signal something serious.

‘The rule I give patients is simple. Any sore, lump, white patch, red patch or rough area in the mouth that has not healed in two weeks needs to be looked at,’ Davydov said.

‘Not watched. Looked at.’

Davydov warns sores that do not heal may be a sign of oral cancer, especially on the side of the tongue. 

Striking about 60,000 Americans every year and killing 13,000, oral cancer is often caused by tobacco smoking, heavy alcohol use and the sexually transmitted infection human papillomavirus (HPV). 

‘Caught early, survival is excellent. Caught late, it is one of the more disfiguring and deadly cancers there is,’ Davydov said. 

‘The difference is often whether somebody looked in the mouth in time.’

Hoss also notes recurring sores canker sores have been linked to deficiencies in vitamins such as folate, iron and B12, as well as autoimmune conditions such as lupus due to inflamed mucous membranes in the mouth.

Davydov stresses that preventing serious diseases in the mouth ‘is not complicated.’  

He suggests brushing twice per day with a toothpaste containing fluoride, which has been shown to strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay. Flossing is also key for preventing gum disease.

‘Do not smoke. Drink water,’ he told the Daily Mail. 

‘Get a professional cleaning and examination at least twice a year because plaque hardens into tartar within days, and no amount of home care removes tartar once it forms.’

Patients with a history of gum disease may need to be seen every three to four months to keep bacteria from repopulating below the gumline, and those with conditions linked to mouth issues, such as heart disease and diabetes, may require more frequent monitoring.

‘Oral care is medical care,’ Hoss told the Daily Mail. ‘Your mouth has been trying to tell you about the rest of your body your entire life. It is worth learning to listen.’
