Critics Slam Shabana Mahmoods Plan To Charge Asylum Seekers

Critics Slam Shabana Mahmoods Plan To Charge Asylum Seekers

Shabana Mahmood has been accused of “performative cruelty” over plans to charge asylum seekers for the cost of their accommodation.

The home secretary said the £4 billion the government the government spent on housing refugees last year was “too high”.

She wants asylum seekers to pay up to £10,000 once they are earning enough money. It is not yet known what that salary threshold will be.

Under measures to be unveiled in the new Immigration and Asylum Bill being unveiled on Tuesday, they must pay off the full amount they owe before they can be eligible to settle in the UK permanently.

Mahmood said: “We have already reduced asylum costs by £1 billion, but it is also right that we ask those who can contribute to do so,” she added.

“Receiving asylum support is a right, but it is also a responsibility. Once people can contribute and repay the generosity of the British people, we expect them to do so.”

But Zoe Dexter, of the human rights charity the Helen Bamber Foundation, said the plan amounted to “more performative cruelty from the government”.

“Charging refugees around £10,000 once they finally find work is the opposite of integration,” she said.

“These are people who have fled persecution and extreme violence, often arriving with nothing, before spending months or years in overcrowded, dilapidated accommodation, sometimes facing intimidation and violent protests outside the places they are housed.

“Burdening them with debt just as they begin rebuilding their lives is grossly unjust and entirely self-defeating.”

Imran Hussain, of the Refugee Council, said: “Imposing what amounts to an extra tax on refugees, who the Home Office accepts have arrived here after fleeing persecution, torture and war, is unfair, impractical and make it much harder for families to rebuild their lives and stand on their own feet.

“The reason why many need asylum support is because the Home Office itself bans asylum seekers from working while their claims are being assessed.

“Asylum support is only given to people who are at risk of being destitute, so this new financial burden would only harm those who arrive on our shores with nothing.”

Lily Allen Defends West End Girl Tour After Criticism

Lily Allen Defends West End Girl Tour After Criticism

The discourse surrounding Lily Allen’s ongoing tour has once again reared its head.

Last year, the Brit Award winner unveiled her critically-acclaimed fifth album West End Girl, claiming at the time that the project was designed to be listened to straight through from start to finish, rather than fans cherry-picking their personal favourites or playing it on shuffle.

With that in mind, when Lily began her tour in support of the project – aptly titled Lily Allen Performs West End Girl – earlier this year, much was made of the fact that the show saw the Smile singer performing West End Girl in its entirety, before leaving the stage.

This followed a section where a string orchestra played a selection of Lily’s hits from her first three albums, with concert-goers being encouraged to sing along karaoke-style.

As a result, Lily’s section of the show clocked in at around an hour, and while some took issue with this at the time, most reviews of the show from both fans and critics were positive (you can read HuffPost UK’s review of Lily Allen Performs West End Girl here).

Now that Lily has kicked off the arena leg of the tour, her show is once again facing scrutiny, with one journalist for the Spectator writing on X that she’d been on stage for 50 minutes, had “no support act”, spoken “not one word to the audience” and charged “£86 [for a seat] in the gods”.

Lily responded on Monday night, pointing out that “there is a support act” and that her show “has always been advertised as Lily Allen Performs West End Girl.”

She explained: “I was a few [minutes] late as my tights were laddered and I had to change them. The show is just over an hour as it’s just the album in its entirety.

“It’s my artistic choice not to talk to the audience, the fourth wall helps with the storytelling. Most people find it to be effective.”

The chart-topping star added: “I don’t want anyone to feel ripped off, everyone on this tour is really working very hard to give people the best show we possibly can, and I’m extremely proud of it.”

When one fan claimed that the British star was the subject of a “smear campaign” that had come “out of nowhere”, she wrote back: “Oh it’s coming from somewhere, but we move!”

A follow-up post saw her speculating that “bots” could be behind some of the negative comments being shared about her online.

Defence investment plan LIVE: Keir Starmer launches ‘game-changing’ boost to armed forces

Published

Daily Mirror

Dan Jarvis, the new defence secretary, has spent his two weeks in the job “refocusing” the Dip, Downing Street said, so that it will get the “latest kit” into the hands of the armed forces.

The Defence Secretary said: “Our armed forces are serving at an increasingly dangerous and unpredictable time. We are determined to give them what they need as they serve with courage and exceptional skill to keep us safe.

“The character of warfare is rapidly changing. In Ukraine and the Middle East, uncrewed systems are defining conflicts.

“This largest ever UK investment into these evolving technologies will help our armed forces stay ahead of our adversaries, backed by the best of our defence industry.

We are giving our extraordinary people the equipment they need to fight and win.”

Britain has been closely watching the use of drones in the theatre of war in Ukraine, where some 200,000 are now used each month to defend against Russian forces, and in Iran, where around 700 drones were launched each day at the height of its war with the US and Israel.

Teenager with ‘troubling fixation on violence’ jailed after threatening to blow up college

Published

Manchester Evening News

The judge described how the 18-year-old ‘worshipped’ serial killers and ‘wanted to be like them’

An 18-year-old has been jailed for three years and nine months after threatening to blow up a college.

Jagger Strang, of Stafford, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court following his earlier guilty pleas to seven separate offences. The charges included two counts of possession of an explosive substance, two counts of possession of information likely to be useful for terrorist purposes, making a threat to kill, threatening to destroy or damage property, and possession of a prohibited weapon in a private place.

The teenager entered his guilty pleas at Leicester Crown Court on May 6, the day his trial was scheduled to begin.

The prosecution outlined a terrifying sequence of events that began in September 2025. Strang, who was 17 at the time and enrolled as a student at Stafford College, openly boasted to his peers that he had gathered numerous weapons and intended to detonate explosives on the college site.

Vigilant staff members and students immediately alerted a college safeguarding officer. Recognising the severity of the threat, the college contacted Staffordshire Police, who dispatched officers to Strang’s home address and arrested him that same afternoon.

During a forensic search of Strang’s property, investigators discovered a hazardous collection of chemical components alongside homemade explosive mixtures, including black powder and thermite – both fabricated directly by the teenager.

A blow pipe and other tactical paraphernalia were also uncovered at the address.

Specialist officers also seized and analysed Strang’s mobile phone. Digital forensic teams uncovered highly concerning materials, including a handwritten personal manifesto, detailed step-by-step instructions on manufacturing functioning bombs and remote detonators, and a recent internet search history dedicated entirely to notorious mass killers.

“This was an extremely concerning case involving a teenager with a clear and troubling fixation on violence,” Detective Inspector Dave Rowlands of Staffordshire Police said following the sentencing.

“The threats he made caused genuine fear among students and staff.”

Strang was remanded in custody immediately following his arrest in 2025 and remained detained until his sentencing hearing.

Law enforcement officials heavily praised the swift containment of the threat, highlighting that the decisive reporting by the college community likely averted a disaster.

“Thanks to the vigilance of the college community and the swift response from Staffordshire Police, we were able to intervene quickly and prevent any potential harm,” Detective Inspector Rowlands added. “We take all reports of this nature incredibly seriously.”
