A West Lothian secondary school teacher from Broxburn has been celebrating the launch of his first award winning novel.
Mr Foday Mannah who teaches English at James Young High School in Livingston, is the proud author of “The Search For Othella Savage”.
The novel is loosely a crime novel which also seeks to explore wider themes such as the abuse of power (both religious and political) gender inequality and the power of friendship. The narrative is set between Scotland and Sierra Leone, the countries Foday has lived the most in.
The novel was published by Quercus Books in May 2025, with paperback edition coming out in April 2026.
The novel won the 2022 Mo Siewcharran Prize and was shortlisted for the 2025 Bloody Scotland Debut Prize.
Becoming a published author is no easy feat, with the process for ‘The Search for Othella Savage’ taking a total of 10 years from the early drafts through to it hitting bookshelves.
Even though with the summer holidays coming up, there’s no rest for Mr Mannah who plans on spending his time working on his next story.
Being an English teacher, he has some words of advice for any of his pupils who would like to follow in his footsteps and become a published author.
Mat Mannah said: “Read. Read a lot. Not just fiction but also nonfiction and newspapers. If you want to become a writer, it is vital that you are also a reader and take in as much variety as possible. I’d also say you must be patient and persevere. It can take a long time, but the result is more than worth the effort.”
