Jio Financial Services shares rose up to 6% after the company reported its Q1 FY27 results. Net profit increased 156% year-on-year to ₹830 crore, while total income excluding dividend income grew 141%.
However, the headline profit number does not tell the complete story.
Jio Financial received dividend income of ₹509 crore during the quarter. Including this amount, profit before tax stood at ₹970 crore. Excluding dividend income, profit before tax was ₹461 crore, representing growth of only 18%.
This means the reported profit was significantly supported by dividend income. At the same time, Jio Financial’s core businesses also showed strong growth.
Jio Financial is building a complete financial services ecosystem across lending, payments, mutual funds, wealth management and insurance.
Jio Credit emerged as the company’s biggest growth engine. Its loan book increased 163% year-on-year, while loan disbursements rose 173%. Net interest income increased 118%, and the lending business more than doubled its profit to ₹96 crore.
A large part of the loan book is currently secured. Home loans and loans against property account for around 45% of assets under management, while corporate and SME loans contribute around 44%. This means the business is not heavily dependent on unsecured personal loans.
Jio Payments Bank also reported strong growth. Customer deposits increased 72%, fee income rose sharply and the net processing margin improved from 9 basis points to 12 basis points.
Payments can become more than a transaction business for Jio Financial. The company can use its payments platform to distribute loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds and insurance products to existing customers.
JioBlackRock also continued to scale. Its assets under management increased 21% from the previous quarter. The business now has around 12 lakh retail investors and more than 600 institutional investors.
The asset management business can generate recurring fee income over the long term without taking lending risk on Jio Financial’s balance sheet.
The company is also expanding into insurance through its partnership with Allianz. Insurance can become a large long-term opportunity, but building distribution, customer trust and profitability may take time and require additional capital.
