In the last two years, the average Indian investor has seen close to 0% returns while headlines kept promising a bull run. In this episode of The 1% Club Show, Sharan Hegde sits down with Shashank Udupa, a SEBI Registered Research Analyst (INH000021207) and smallcase manager, to understand what actually happened to the Indian stock market; and how a rules-based quant strategy managed to generate alpha through one of the most volatile years in recent memory.

Shashank is an ex-investment banker at 360 ONE and the co-founder of Avalon Meta, and has been investing for over a decade before turning full-time into research. He now manages the F.L.U.I.D family of smallcases, including the FLUID Q Quant basket that is available inside the 1% Club app. In this conversation, he opens up the actual performance chart of the basket and explains, month by month, every decision behind it including the cash call taken during a 10% index crash, why he refused to rebalance mid-cycle during a painful drawdown, and how one or two winners ended up carrying the entire year’s returns.
