We remember Peshwa Baji Rao I as an undefeated military genius—the man who fought over 41 battles and never lost one. He expanded the Maratha Empire across Central India, striking fear into the hearts of the Mughals and Nizam alike. But history books rarely show you the crushing weight behind the armor.

Behind the glorious victories lay a heartbreaking, hidden crisis: unpayable debt.

To maintain his unstoppable cavalry, secure supplies, and fund continuous campaigns, Baji Rao relied heavily on wealthy financiers. Chief among them was his spiritual guide and money lender, Brahmendra Swami.

As campaigns dragged on and the royal treasury dried up, the creditors closed in. The man who conquered kingdoms could not escape his financial liabilities. In a series of deeply vulnerable and agonizing letters translated by historian G.S. Sardesai, the invincible Peshwa completely broke down:
“I am living in the hell of being beset by creditors… death is better than this humiliation.”

Imagine a warrior of his stature, revered by millions, admitting that the pressure of debt felt worse than facing an army on the battlefield. While his soldiers celebrated victory, Baji Rao was privately drowning in stress, writing desperate pleas for patience and funds just to keep his army afloat.

It is a stark, humanizing look at history. It reminds us that empire-building wasn’t just about swords and strategy; it was an exhausting game of economics, logistics, and heavy psychological burdens. Baji Rao I didn’t just bleed on the battlefield—he bled in silence under the weight of his responsibilities.

Parkour’s development from military training gives it some aspects of non-combative martial art.
