Returning To UK From Mexico? UKHSA Issues Explosive Diarrhoea Warning

Travellers heading to Mexico have been warned to take precautions to reduce their risk of picking up a nasty, explosive diarrhoea infection.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has noted a “sharp rise” in cyclospora infections among travellers returning to the UK from Mexico.

The health body said 67 cases have been reported in returning travellers between 30 April and 15 July this year – of these, 48 had travelled to Mexico.

As a result, it’s urging holidaymakers to maintain good food and water hygiene while abroad.

What is cyclospora?

You might’ve seen headlines in the news about an explosive diarrhoea outbreak sweeping the United States. Per the BBC, more than 18,000 people may have been infected – with Michigan hit hardest.

Cyclospora is a parasite that causes explosive diarrhoea. Contaminated food – especially herbs, salad and soft fruit – are common sources of outbreaks and infections.

The UKHSA noted that cyclospora doesn’t naturally occur in the UK and there is no risk of spread from person to person.

If you do happen to consume something that’s contaminated with the parasite, symptoms of infection can include frequent (and sometimes explosive) watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, flatulence, low-grade fever, loss of appetite and weight loss.

While cyclosporiasis is usually mild and most people improve typically in a few days without any treatment, infections can be more serious or prolonged in people who are immunocompromised. In this instance, antibiotics may be needed.

More cases expected over the summer holidays

The UKHSA said it anticipates a rise in travel-associated cases linked to increased summer travel to Mexico and a potential increase in cases linked to travel to the USA, where a widespread outbreak has also been reported.

Dr Philip Veal, consultant in travel health at UKHSA, said travellers to Mexico and other areas where the infection is more common can reduce their risk by “following good food and water hygiene measures, including drinking bottled water and eating thoroughly cooked food, even when staying in high-end all-inclusive resorts”.

“We also advise avoiding certain foods such as fresh uncooked berries and herbs, unpeeled fruit and salad items,” he added.

If you develop symptoms after returning from travel, seek medical attention and inform your healthcare provider of your travel history, the expert advised.

‘Phantom Crying’: Why You Think You Hear Your Baby Crying But You Don’t

Published

'Phantom Crying': Why You Think You Hear Your Baby Crying But You Don't

In the first weeks after giving birth to my daughter, I thought I was losing it – mostly because every time I’d have a shower, I would hear her cry.

I’d dash out of the shower and rush into our bedroom – traipsing shampoo and wet footprints across the carpet – and find our baby in her bedside crib, silent as a mouse, her tiny chest rising and falling, her eyes clamped shut.

I experienced this for months and months. I don’t recall exactly when it stopped, but it was probably about the three to four months mark.

And it turns out I’m definitely not alone in my experience. It’s very much A Thing.

worst thing with a newborn is being in the shower and hearing your baby cry when they aren’t really crying 🤦🏻♀️🥺

— Haley Louise (@HaleyLouisePri1) December 23, 2020

There’s nothing worse than hearing your baby cry in the middle of your shower and when you check on them they are fast asleep🙄 #phantomcry

— Kendra Lauren (@FemmeAuNaturale) January 26, 2023

Why do we hear these phantom baby cries?

Mothers have reported hearing phantom cries in the shower, but also throughout the night and while their baby is napping. You could be in another room doing the ironing and swear you hear them cry, only to find them fast asleep in their Moses basket.

Like many things involving women – and indeed, mothers – it’s not particularly well-researched, but doctors insist it’s a pretty normal occurrence that happens after having a baby.

Dr Kiran Rahim, a paediatric doctor, told HuffPost UK: “Phantom crying is a fairly common phenomenon experienced by most mothers. Whilst we don’t fully understand it, we do know that having a baby changes the brain cells and the neural connections in a mother’s brain.”

And this probably has a lot to do with why we’re hearing sounds that aren’t there all of a sudden.

As Megan Gray, an ob-gyn with Orlando Health Physician Associates, told Popsugar: “It most likely has to do with a highly stimulated maternal brain that is being wired to be cued by baby’s cries, leading to a heightened awareness to sound.”

Similar changes occur in dads’ brains as well, but likely on a lesser scale, according to Robert Froemke, associate professor at New York University Langone.

On top of that, our brains are adapting to some pretty big life changes. We’re no longer sleeping properly, we’re on high alert trying to keep a baby alive, our routines and lifestyle choices (exercise, eating a healthy diet, self-care) have been completely thrown out of the window.

“In those first few months of having a new baby, some of these connections in the brain can get a bit criss-crossed so that you hear crying, when in fact, your baby is asleep,” suggested Dr Rahim.

“Most parents are in a ‘permanent’ state of stress in the early days which wears the body down and places parents in a ‘hyper alert’ state, perpetually ready to respond to even the slightest stress.”

Phantom crying is also – in the most unsurprising news ever – linked to sleep deprivation and postnatal mental health, particularly anxiety and depression, according to Dr Rahim.

“Up to one in five women develop postnatal mental health problems, so phantom crying is more common than we might think,” she said.

The good news is that generally it settles after three to six months, as parents ease into their new normal.

But if you’re experiencing a lot of phantom crying, it might be worth making some changes. For instance, can you get extra help with the night feeds and nappy changes so you can get some more sleep?

And if phantom cries are affecting your day-to-day life, it’s well worth speaking to a professional – whether that’s a midwife, GP or therapist – who can offer further support.

Earlier this year, Amazon pulled Luca Guadagnino’s biopic about OpenAI boss Sam Altman.

The film, Artificial, “will be better served if it were released by a different studio and [we] are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home,” Amazon MGM Studios said after deciding to ditch its release.

The Guardian noted that the cancellation came “in the wake of a significant partnership struck between Amazon and OpenAI”.

Artificial stars Andrew Garfield as Altman and comedian and actor Ike Barinholtz as co-founder of OpenAI, Elon Musk.

Speaking with Variety on Wednesday while promoting his new film, The Magic Faraway Tree, Garfield said he “was and I wasn’t [surprised]” to hear the movie had been dropped.

“I think there are certain things that fit certain places and don’t fit other places and [Amazon] were nothing but supportive and nothing but encouraging while we were making the film,” he added.

“Luca [Guadagnino, Artificial’s director] has a really great relationship with them and I’ve developed a lovely relationship with them as well. I’m grateful that they’ve helped the film to find the home that it was meant to find.”

Neon, who acquired the global rights to Artificial from Amazon MGM Studios, seem to have the movie on their slate for the upcoming awards season.

Garfield added that he didn’t contact his character, Altman, while filming the movie that focused on his turbulent 2023 firing and rehiring at OpenAI.

“I wouldn’t know how to. I don’t have his number. I don’t have his email. But I’m sure that he’d be able to reach me if he wants to. I’d be very excited and curious to talk with him if he would ever want to do that.”

Andrew added that Altman is “very documented,” having sat for lots of interviews.

“I, of course, would have loved and still would love to meet Sam. But I’m playing a version of the character that was written in the script, and I think that while you want to be as truthful to that as you can, you’re never going to understand anyone ever fully ever anyway.

“We’re all so complicated and deeply layered, and I think that Mr. Altman is probably no exception.”

Trump Causes Confusion By Insisting Burnham Will 'Open Up The North Sea' For Drilling

Published

on

Donald Trump has insisted that Andy Burnham has told him the UK will expand North Sea oil and gas drilling.

The US president told a White House briefing on Wednesday that the new prime minister was going to ramp up fossil fuel operations in the North Sea.

But extracting and then burning more fossil fuels is a highly controversial issue in the UK because of the consequences for climate change.

Britain is also in the middle of its fourth heatwave of the year with a record number of days exceeding 35C.

The new prime minister has previously hinted he might give the green light to more oil and gas extraction in the North Sea.

But Burnham has insisted he will remain commit to Labour’s 2024 manifesto, which pledged not to issue any more licences for drilling in the North Sea.

But Trump claimed the PM said otherwise in their private phone call last Monday.

He told reporters: “He [Burnham] said he’s going to open up North Sea oil. If he does that, you’re going to be a wealthy country.”

Trump added that the UK has “windmills all over the place” which were made in China, and said Britain buys oil from Norway.

“Norway’s got trillions of dollars in the bank. Trillions. It sells its oil from the North Sea, and Scotland has a better part of the North Sea,” the US president said.

“And you have 500, 600, 700 years. You have areas of the North Sea that haven’t even been explored yet. You have one of the most valuable oil finds anywhere in the world, and if the United Kingdom would just … they’d be a wealthy country again.”

He continued: “I could not get [Keir] Starmer to use it. It was incredible. Every oil company that I meet, and these are all big giants, every person that I know in the oil business said, ‘Please, could you open up the North Sea? Could you get them to open it?’ They’re dying to do it.”

Starmer’s relationship with Trump collapsed shortly before he left office, in part because of their different approaches to fossil fuels.

The US president often slammed Burnham’s predecessor for not allowing new oil and gas fields in the North Sea to be explored as part of his government’s determination to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

Yet, Trump insisted Aberdeen has the “best oil anywhere on the planet”, adding: “The new gentleman, when I spoke to him, he said he’s going to open up the North Sea.”

When asked to respond to Trump’s claims, Downing Street directed HuffPost UK to the readout of the president’s call with Burnham last week.

The release does not mention oil.

It says: “Setting out his vision as Prime minister of the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister said he would be focused on ensuring re-industrialisation up and down the country to ensure good growth in every postcode.

“The prime minister also underlined his commitment to defence and security and said ensuring the security of the UK and its allies was at the top of his agenda.”

Good news for Spider-Man fans: not only is the new installment Brand New Day out now (with good reviews), but they’ll finally be able to work out who Stranger Things star Sadie Sink’s mysterious character is.

Though Sadie has been connected to the project for a long time, there’s been little to no clarity on her role, which critics describe as crucial. Well, OK – we’ve learned that her character sits on a bench and apparently has something to do with a scrunchie.

But if you haven’t seen the film yet, Sadie herself has reacted to fan theories about her possible roles.

On The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, the host ran through the parts fans think she might have taken.

Here are the suggestions and her responses:

1) The film’s “main villain”

Fallon didn’t clarify who that “villain” might be; Peter Parker’s enemy in the new movie is also a surprise.

To this, Sadie said: “We’ll have to wait and see”.

2) Spider-Man’s non-MJ love interest, Gwen Stacy

Formerly portrayed by Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Gwen was Peter Parker’s classmate and love interest before Mary-Jane, but in the comics, she was controversially killed off.

As to whether Sadie’s taking her part, “I guess we’ll find out,” she replied.

3) Mayday Parker, the daughter of Peter Parker and MJ “who eventually becomes Spider-Girl”

Nicknamed “May Parker”, this character exists in alternate timeline Reality-982.

To this suggestion, the Stranger Things actor stated, “I don’t know!” as host Jimmy laughed.

Spider-ManSpider-Man

4) Punisher’s sidekick, Rachel Cole

Rachel Cole-Alves was mentored by Frank Castle, who became The Punisher.

“We’ll find out in theatres” whether Sadie plays her, the actor chirped on Jimmy’s show.

5) Firestar, Spider-Man’s possible first superhero love interest

Also known as Angelica Jones, Firestar ”manifested her mutant microwave energy powers at the age of 13,” Marvel explained. She first appeared in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

This one got a “who knows?”

6) Jean Grey

Jimmy called this “the most popular internet theory”. Jean Grey is an X-Men member (some fans also think she might play Rachel Grey, Jean’s daughter). Fans think she’ll bring “X-Men mutants into the [Marvel Cinematic Universe]”.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” Sadie ended.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is showing in cinemas now.

Musician Suki Waterhouse, who’s married to The Odyssey actor Robert Pattinson, shared a sweet story about her husband’s nickname at home.

The couple shares a two-year-old daughter. And on the And The Writer Is… podcast, Suki shared that their child has given her father an adorable moniker while he’s been away filming new Batman film The Batman: Part II

But despite wearing some pretty extreme looks on set, Suki said their child got used to the extreme aesthetic pretty quickly.

“She doesn’t actually seem to notice,” she told the podcast hosts.

“She calls him ‘Daddy Batman’ now because he’s always dressed up like that now for the next seven months whenever he’s on FaceTime.”

Not just that, but the Love, Rosie actor said her daughter’s becoming more aware about her mum’s job, too.

“She points out – in a story book we were looking at jobs and she’s like, ‘That’s your job’ at the girl with a guitar,” Suki, who has just released album Loveland, added.

Speaking about his daughter previously, Robert said having a child has made his life “more fun”.

“If someone told me I was going to die in a week, I’d be like, ’What? I want to spend some more time with my kid,” he said in a 2025 interview.

For her part, Suki said motherhood “made me marvel at our humanness.

“Being a mum just f***ed me up in such a sweet way. It just absolutely broke open my heart, and I’m just madly in love and – despite my crying right now – I enjoy it so much and I’m so taken by my daughter and so in love with doing it with my partner and I just feel the preciousness of it very much,” she told The Standard earlier this year.

Jenrick Attacks Burnham Over A Tax The PM Has Not Actually Launched

Jenrick Attacks Burnham Over A Tax The PM Has Not Actually Launched

Robert Jenrick has accused Andy Burnham of launching a “death tax” to pay for his social care reforms.

But the government has not actually confirmed any new levies linked to fixing the struggling sector.

The prime minister held a press conference on Wednesday to reveal his three-point plan to overhaul the broken care system.

That includes speeding up an independent review for how to set up a national care service, prioritising the workforce, and launching cross-party talks with the Lib Dems and the Tories.

Neither Reform nor the Greens were invited to Burnham’s discussions about fixing social care yesterday.

Reform leader Nigel Farage said it was clear the PM “is conspiring behind closed doors with the failed political establishment to foist further tax rises on the country.”

But the Conservatives have insisted they will only work with the government if it rules out further tax rises.

Burnham also called for political unity on Wednesday.

He said: “We have to find common ground and listen to others to find a way forward. It’s time to draw a line under people playing politics when the human cost of that means carers struggling, families paying the price and our NHS buckling under the strain.”

But in a press conference on Thursday, Jenrick – Reform UK’s Treasury spokesperson – claimed Burnham has spent the last two decades pushing to introduce a new so-called “death tax”.

The Labour politician has previously backed the idea of a blanket 10% levy on inheritance when he was health secretary under Gordon Brown.

However Downing Street has said this week “there are no plans for this”.

“If that was his sole aim, there are other ways to fund it, like cutting foreign aid or benefits for migrants. No,” Jenrick said.

“He’s shown again and again that he thinks the savings that you’ve earned, no matter how little that you’ve scrimped and saved for. Whether you’re rich or poor, he says, the tax man deserves a bit more.”

Jenrick said Burnham was “Labour’s answer to the Pied Piper”, who is “playing an enticing tune but actually leading… our country into more desperate trouble.”

He continued: “Andy Burnham knows rightly, to be fair, that [Reform] will never go along with a betrayal of people who’ve paid in their whole lives. And make no mistake, that is what Andy Burnham is planning to do. That is the purpose of the talks that the other parties are now engaged in.”

He claimed Burnham’s new tax, on top of inheritance tax, would “cost families almost £30 billion a year”, describing it as a “truly extreme proposal”.

He said while the social care system “needs to change”.

He claimed Burnham is also looking to scrap technology used to consolidate patient details and help hospitals, GPs and the care system communicate.

That tech is provided by Palantir which also provides software for the Israeli Defence Forces.

Jenrick said the prime minister is “going to scrap the tech that’s actually working to help discharge in hospital” because the “British Islamists were unhappy about it” and Burnham wants to “get a few votes back”.

He claimed his party would keep the technology in place, cut benefits overseas aid and funding for quangos, and “pay care workers properly”.

“This country does not lack money for care. It lacks a government with the courage and determination to put its own people first,” the Newark MP said.

Hunter Biden Savages Trump, Democratic Leaders In NSFW Rant

Hunter Biden Savages Trump, Democratic Leaders In NSFW Rant

Hunter Biden wasn’t interested in playing polite when asked if the relationship between the Biden and Trump families was just as ugly behind the scenes as it appears in public.

During a nearly three-hour sit-down on Barstool Sports’ Macrodosing podcast, the former president’s son and attorney-turned-artist disputed the idea that animosity between Democrats and Republicans was all political theater, sending a sharp “Fuck them” to US President Donald Trump and his entire brood.

“I’m not running for anything, so I can say whatever the fuck I want,” he said, unleashing his highly uncensored opinion on everyone in Washington, DC, he thinks double-crossed his dad, former US President Joe Biden.

That included calling Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) a “piece of shit” who “fucked” his dad over by pressuring him to drop his 2024 bid for reelection following his infamous debate against Trump.

The younger Biden also gave a firm “fuck that” to the expectation that former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was owed respect for all she’s done for the Democrats, telling his hosts, “I don’t have anything nice to say about her.”

But he reserved his sharpest takedown for Trump, saying, “Fuck him, fuck his sons, fuck his daughter … All of them. The whole family down to the grandchildren.”

Telling the Barstool boys he hoped the Trump name would be forever tarnished, Biden said he had no problem with his tirade going viral.

“What would you expect me to say about a man that treats my father that way publicly?” he asked. “What would you expect me to say about a man that treats my mother that way, that treats my sister that way? They stole her fucking diary and published it, said my dad is a pedophile.”

Biden rejected the “all is fair in love and war and politics” defense before finishing with a firm “Fuck them and fuck that.”

Tom Holland Admits He’s Spent Years Planning His Spider-Man Replacement

Tom Holland has previously named who he thinks should don the Spidey suit after him after his Spider-Man run is over. He told Esquire in June that Owen Cooper, the star of Netflix hit Adolescence, “would be awesome” for the job.

“He’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now,” Tom added. Owen has previously spoken about wanting to play the iconic Marvel hero.

But it wasn’t clear until now how seriously the The Odyssey star seems to be taking the selection process.

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor explained that plans have been taking place behind the scenes for five years.

“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which released in 2021, he explained.

“It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”

He didn’t mention a name in this interview, nor did he mention the exact role his successor might take.

Speaking to Empire previously, Tom said: “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter.

And, he said, he’d like to mentor whoever comes next.

“Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what [Robert Downey Jr] did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”

The actor has previously praised Downey’s role in his Marvel journey, saying he gave him “the best advice” he’s ever got for acting.

After an exceptionally hot and dry summer, large swathes of south-west France and parts of Spain are currently experiencing enormous wildfires.

The flames have meant over 220,000 residents have been evacuated in France and Spain. Authorities are working hard to contain the large-scale burning.

Brignoles, the town in which stars George and Amal Clooney live, has also been affected.

They left the property with their two children earlier this week.

In a letter, George wrote to the area’s mayor, Didier Brémond, to say: “Dear Didier, At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment and as we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasize 2 things.

“First we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.”
