BYU’s AJ Dybantsa was selected No. 1 overall by the Wizards on Tuesday night in Brooklyn, where nearly every team earned top marks for their selections in the first round of an absolutely loaded NBA Draft.
Top 4: Any of these freshman uber-prospects could have reasonably gone No. 1 in most years, so Washington, Utah, Memphis and Chicago should all be thrilled with the young men who are about to join their ranks.
Dybantsa (Wizards): The 6-foot-9 athletic freak and scoring machine (he led the NCAA with 25.5 points per game last season) gives Washington someone who could become one of the NBA’s most unstoppable shot-creators, and someone who should slot in nicely alongside veteran All-Stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis.
Darryn Peterson (Jazz): The 6-foot-5 guard out of Kansas is a buttery-smooth scorer and dynamic playmaker who can shine with or without the ball, and his 6-foot-11 wingspan makes him a high-impact defender, to boot. Utah got a potential superstar as long as he can avoid the cramping issue that hindered his otherwise sensational season in Lawrence.
Cameron Boozer (Grizzlies): The most polished player in the class and reigning POY out of Duke made this an incredibly easy choice for Memphis, who get a 6-foot-8 forward that can score from the post with both footwork and power. Plus, second-generation players like him historically outperform their draft slot expectations by 26%.
Caleb Wilson (Bulls): The most gifted athlete in the draft class is 6-foot-9 with springs for legs, and when the North Carolina big is flying above the rim, finishing through contact, and chasing down every shot, he looks like a future franchise cornerstone. That sort of defensive anchor with offensive upside is exactly what the Bulls need in the frontcourt.
Next up: Those four freshman at the top were followed by four freshman guards who went in succession, as the Clippers got Illinois’ Keaton Wagler, the Nets got Louisville’s Mikel Brown Jr., the Kings got Arkansas’ Darius Acuff Jr., and the Hawks got Houston’s Kingston Flemings.

Consider this: 11 of the 14 lottery picks were freshmen, while the other three were transfers ā all of whom won the national championship with Michigan. Morez Johnson Jr. went ninth to the Mavericks (where he’ll reunite with Dusty May), Yaxel Lendeborg went 11th to the Warriors and Aday Mara went 12th to the Thunder.

The Swoosh strikes again: Dybantsa’s selection made him the 12th Nike athlete in the last 20 years to go No. 1 overall, or 14th if you include the Nike-owned Jordan Brand. His addition adds young dynamism to an evolving men’s basketball roster at Nike, where the future is in uncertain hands.
The top of the roster is aging, as LeBron James and Kevin Durant ā on the 23rd and 19th iterations of their signature shoes, respectively ā near the end of their playing careers.
Nike added reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as a signature athlete last week, plucking him from Nike-owned Converse to fortify its collection of prime-aged players.
Ja Morant and Cade Cunningham headline the tier below SGA, but the former’s play has taken a step back, while the latter’s marketability remains a source of skepticism.
Further complicating matters? The presumed face of the next generation, Victor Wembanyama, is an impending sneaker free agent, per Shams Charania. Depending on the Frenchman’s decision, Dybantsa could have size 22 shoes to fill.

ā½ļø RONALDO JOINS THE PARTY

With his fading abilities the subject of question marks and jeers, Cristiano Ronaldo had to watch as his chief rival chased and achieved tournament history through the World Cup’s early stages. On Tuesday, the Portuguese icon made history of his own.

Two decorated decades: Ronaldo scored two first-half goals in Portugal’s 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, adding to the parade of superstar braces that began on Monday.
His first, a characteristically clinical finish in the match’s sixth minute, made him the first player to score in six World Cups ā a feat that it’s hard to imagine anyone ever matching (Lionel Messi was shut out in the 2010 edition).
His second, carefully slotted past the keeper in the 39th minute, made him the oldest player ever with a multi-goal game in the tournament (41 years, 138 days), breaking the record set by Messi twice in the past week (38 years, 363 days).

Everything to play for: 36 teams (75% of the field) still have hope of advancing out of the group stage. And though such widespread uncertainty at this juncture is nothing new, the heavy proportion of those teams who will eventually secure passage into the knockouts is.
In 2022, 27 of 32 teams (84%) came into Matchday No. 3 facing an uncertain outcome. However, only 13 of those nations (48%) would ultimately advance.
In this year’s edition ā where the top-eight third-place teams will advance alongside the top two teams in each group ā those 36 teams are vying for 25 remaining positions, ensuring that more than two-thirds of them will fight on past the group stage.
ā³ļø THE PGA TOUR INTRODUCES PROMOTION AND RELEGATION

The PGA Tour unveiled a radical new competitive model on Tuesday, featuring a series of changes that will be more substantial than any in the Tour’s half-century-long history.

Champions and Challengers: Beginning in 2028, the Tour will operate on two tracks ā the Championship and Challenger Series ā which will run concurrently from February through August and include a promotion/relegation system.
Championship: The top golfers’ slate includes a baseline of 15 regular-season events, each with about 120 golfers, a 36-hole cut and at least a $20 million purse. Their remaining schedule is filled out with the four majors, The Players Championship, the playoffs and an annual international team event (Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup).
Challenger: Larger fields of about 144 golfers will compete in at least 20 events, each with a minimum purse of $4 million. Of note: The exact criteria for which players will slot into each Series has yet to be determined, but to be clear, this is distinct from the Korn Ferry Tour; these will be PGA Tour golfers.
Promotion/relegation: The top 20 players in the season-long Challenger standings will be promoted to the Championship, with immediate promotion available to anyone who wins either two events or a major. The top 90 Championship players (at least) will remain on that track, while the remaining ~40 will be eligible for relegation. In the fall, several “last-chance” events will give fringe players an opportunity to play their way into the Championship.

Plus: The postseason will be revamped to include match play, and will be contested across a rotation of courses. Further details will be revealed at the Tour Championship in August.

Portland closed the gap, pulling to 98-88 on Carleton’s 3-pointer with 4:08 left. She had a layup that made it 100-93 to get the Fire even closer. Clark hit free throws to make it 110-96 with just a minute to go and the Fire ran out of time.Ā
There was a pregame rally outside of the Moda Center in support ofĀ Sophie CunninghamĀ and her recent comments about barring transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports. A similar rally was held before the Fever’s 105-94 victory at the Seattle Storm on Tuesday.Ā
Cunningham was booed by the Moda Center crowd when she came into the game midway through the first quarter. Shortly thereafter, she hit a three-pointer that put the Fever up 14-8. Cunningham finished with 13 points.
Megan DiLeo’s three-pointer put the Fire up 36-30, but the Fever clawed back a 56-47 lead at the half. Clark led the Fever with 17 first-half points.Ā

New coaching staff, same old results for the Ottawa Redblacks.
Despite bringing in two-time Grey Cup-winning head coach Ryan Dinwiddie this season, the Redblacks fell to 0-7 with a 34-13 loss to the Montreal Alouettes on Friday in the nation’s capital.
Dating back to last season, it marked the 13th consecutive loss for a Redblacks team that has not won a playoff game since 2018. It was also Ottawa’s 13th loss in a row against its closest geographical rival.
The latest loss puts the Redblacks just one defeat away from tying the modern-era ā since the creation of the CFL in 1958 ā league record for most losses in a row.

The record was set by the Shreveport Pirates, who lost their first 14 games in their expansion season in 1994.
The Pirates were owned by former Ottawa Rough Riders and Renegades owners Bernie and Lonnie Glieberman, who presided over some dismal days in Ottawa football.
The Gliebermans bolted from Ottawa late in the Rough Riders era to start the Pirates franchise, which lasted two years in Louisiana before the CFL gave up on its American experiment. The father-son duo returned to Ottawa in 2005 for the final year of the Renegades before that franchise folded. Bernie passed away in 2024.
The Redblacks, who brought Ottawa back to the CFL in 2014, will have their hands full avoiding the record book. They play their next three games on the road, starting next Friday in Saskatchewan, followed by contests in Winnipeg and Montreal.

Six other teams also lost 13 games in a row before avoiding a 14th consecutive defeat.
The Redblacks still have a ways to go to match the all-time Canadian football record, set by the Ottawa Senators and Rough Riders, who lost 25 in a row from 1928 to 1932. The Hamilton Wildcats sit second, with 16 straight defeats from 1948 to ’49.

Neeraj Chopra takes silver; Yash Vir Singh claims bronze
The marquee event of the evening took place at the stadium in the men’s javelin throw final. Two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra registered a season-best effort of 85.83m to claim the silver medal. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage captured gold with a massive 89.75m throw.

Joining Chopra on the podium was teammate Yash Vir Singh, who launched a personal best throw of 85.41m on his final attempt to snatch the bronze medal and secure a 2-3 finish for India.
Tejaswin Shankar scripts decathlon history
Multi-event athlete Tejaswin Shankar turned in a heroic two-day performance across ten grueling disciplines to claim the bronze medal in the men’s decathlon with a total of 7,976 points. Shankar’s podium finish marks India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon.

Lawn bowls: The men’s pairs duo of Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar extended their unbeaten run by defeating the Falkland Islands 2-0 in sectional play to move into the knockout rounds. In women’s singles, Nayanmoni Saikia posted a convincing 2-0 win over Zambia’s Mildred Mkandawire.
Track cycling: Harshveer Sekhon and Dinesh Kumar competed in the men’s 4000m individual pursuit qualification rounds but missed out on advancing to the final heat.

Eala said she is looking forward to facing Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and the tournamentās third seed, as the Filipino tennis player eyes a spot in the final in Washington.

Eala stunned No.2 seed Elina Svitolina anew in the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-4, while Osaka survived Elisabetta Cocciaretto, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the semifinal.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Saturday he has scrapped a plan to allow private investment in the World Cup following fierce backlash from football officials worldwide.
“Our purpose has always beenĀ ā and will always beĀ ā to unite and improve,” Infantino said in a statement.
“As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”
FIFA, world football’s governing body, had floated the plan on Tuesday, saying it could raise up to $4.2 billion based on a valuation of $20 billion for a new FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a commercial subsidiary it proposed to run events such as the World Cup and Club World Cup.

It said that, if approved, the project could provide each of FIFA’s 211 member associations with a one-off payment of $20 million in early 2027 and increase their funding allocation for the 2027-2030 cycle from $8 million to $20 million.
The Asian Football Confederation, which represents 47 member nations, welcomed the plan’s withdrawal on Saturday.

Any initiative that may impact global football should be “presented and discussed with the Confederations, the FIFA Council, Member Associations (MAs) and other stakeholders in a timely, transparent and meaningful manner,” the Kuala Lumpur-based body said in a statement.
The Mexican Football Federation also welcomed the move, saying that “unity among all the Confederations and Federations has been prioritised for the good of football”.
Earlier this week, European football’s governing body UEFA said none of its national teams would participate in any FIFA competition “for so long as these proposals remain alive”.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and North American and Caribbean federation (CONCACAF) also condemned the move.

“The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product,” UEFA said in a statement. “No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.”
Pressure mounted on Infantino on Friday with the resignation of senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro, who called the idea “a bad deal for FIFA’s member associations, a bad deal for football, and a bad deal for the long-term future of the game”.
South American confederation CONMEBOL, whose president Alejandro Dominguez is regarded as a close ally of Infantino, demanded further information on the “scope, structure, governance and potential effects” of the project.

‘Created divisions’
In the late-night statement announcing the plan was dead, Infantino said the project was conceived as a means of strengthening member associations, and that it would only have gone ahead if a majority supported it.
“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” he said.
FIFA had tried to fend off the critics, saying in a statement early Friday that it would continue consultations with member associations and insisting that “nobody is selling football”.
But the pressure mounted, and not just within the football community.
A day after the European Union praised UEFA for “defending the integrity of the game,” UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Friday that Infantino was “the wrong man” to lead FIFA.
The beleaguered Infantino said he would focus now on restoring harmony while continuing to grow the game.
“Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support,” he said.

The guard is accused of purposely taking himself out of a game while playing for the Charlotte Hornets, so friends could cash in on bets on his “under” propositions.
According to reports, attorney David Markus filed a motion to dismiss two charges against Rozier. In the motion, Markus wrote that a text sent by Rozier’s friend and co-defendant, Deniro Laster, showed that Rozier was unaware of any bets and did not agree to any sort of fix.

“Dont tell chum bout the bet,” Laster allegedly wrote in the March 29 text, six days after Rozier played just nine minutes and left the game due to an apparent injury. Chum is Rozier’s nickname, the filing noted.
The recipient responded, “Hell no,” the filing said.
“This should end the case. One does not hide a bet from the person who supposedly sold it,” Markus said in the filing.

However, federal prosecutors say they have evidence showing that the text did not relate to sports gambling.
Rozier is alleged to have told Laster that he would take himself out of a game early, citing an injury so Laster could place wagers based on the information. Neither Hornets officials nor betting companies were made aware of Rozier’s plan, according to the indictment, and Rozier was not listed on the team’s injury report.

Laster then allegedly sold that information to other co-conspirators, and numerous people placed wagers totaling roughly $200,000 on Rozier’s “under” prop bets in both parlay and straight wagers. After Rozier played just nine minutes and never returned, the bets won. Rozier and Laster counted cash winnings at Rozier’s home in Charlotte roughly a week later, the indictment says.

Prosecutors in April said they sought to file superseding charges of sports bribery and honest services wire fraud during a hearing. Prosecutors said they had evidence that Rozier solicited and received a bribe amid the alleged gambling scheme.
Rozier was waived by the Miami Heat earlier this year.
Nearly three dozen people were arrested last October in two separate cases, one regarding betting on NBA games based on insider knowledge, and another regarding a poker ring in which former guard and head coach Chauncey Billups allegedly participated in rigged games.

Nigeria produced one of the greatest comebacks in football history on July 31, 1996, defeating Brazil 4-3 after extra time to reach the final of the Atlanta Olympic Games.
The Dream Team came from two goals down to beat a star-studded Brazilian side, with Nwankwo Kanu scoring a dramatic late equaliser before netting the golden goal winner.
Brazil made the perfect start when FlĆ”vio ConceiĆ§Ć£o opened the scoring in the first minute. Nigeria responded in the 20th minute after Roberto Carlos turned the ball into his own net to make it 1-1.

Bebeto restored Brazilās lead eight minutes later before ConceiĆ§Ć£o grabbed his second goal in the 38th minute to give the South Americans a commanding 3-1 advantage at half-time.
Nigeria began their fightback in the 78th minute through Victor Ikpeba, who reduced the deficit to 3-2.
With seconds remaining in normal time, Kanu scored the equaliser to send the thrilling contest into extra time.

Just four minutes into the additional period, Kanu struck again with the golden goal to complete a famous 4-3 victory and send Nigeria into the Olympic final, where the Dream Team went on to win the countryās first-ever football gold medal.
Thirty years on, that unforgettable comeback remains one of the greatest moments in Nigerian football history.
Manchester United return to the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm this afternoon to take on Atletico Madrid.
Manchester United’s pre-season preparations will step up a gear this afternoon when they take on La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. On paper, Diego Simeone’s side provide the toughest test yet for the Reds and Michael Carrick will be hopeful his players are equal to the challenge.
Altay Bayindir returned to Carrington this week and has made it into the travelling squad. While his future is in doubt, the Reds could look to put him in the shop window against Atletico and he will be expecting to start. Ahead of him, Carrick will likely persist with playing Leny Yoro at right-back, in the absence of Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui.

If Yoro is at full-back, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven should play in the centre with Luke Shaw in his familiar left-back role. Just ahead of them, it is a chance to see the blossoming partnership of Andrey Santos and Mason Mount against tough opposition.
Santos has impressed in his opening two games for United but his defensive skills should be tested more against Atleti. Mount is also enjoying a positive pre-season and it will be interesting to see him play that deeper role against a Champions League rival.
All eyes will be on JJ Gabriel to see if he starts. Carrick has cut the travelling group down to 23, and the 15-year-old is thought of highly by the head coach but after not playing a minute against Rosenborg, it seems unlikely the teenager will get the nod to start this one. Instead, Patrick Dorgu should continue to state his claim on the left wing, in the absence of Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford.

Amad has also returned to Carrington and has travelled for this game but, unlike Bayindir, it is expected Carrick will be more cautious with the 24-year-old. Playing on the wing is more physically demanding than in goal and the last thing United want is an avoidable injury.
Carrick surprised a few fans last week when he opted to start Shea Lacey down the middle. That decision was soon justified by the teenager and we should see him given another chance today. If Lacey can have the same impact as last week, that will give Carrick food for thought.
Benjamin Sesko’s absence means Joshua Zirkzee should lead the line. Like Bayindir, United will be hoping the Dutchman’s performance will drum up interest in him.
