What does Pittsburgh decide to do with Joey Porter Jr?
He’s moving into his fourth season and has a Vikings connection. DB Coach Gerald Alexander used to work for the Pittsburgh Steelers, coaching Porter in his time in the Steel City. Moreover, Brian Flores used to work in Pittsburgh; while he didn’t overlap with the defender, Flores will have a strong understanding of Pittsburgh’s process alongside plenty of connections inside their building.

Some background: “Porter, who was placed on the PUP list after aggravating a back injury during the team’s mobility workout on the first day of training camp, is in line for an extension as he enters the final year of his contract. He was present for some OTAs and mandatory minicamp but didn’t participate in drills during the portions open to media. He has also been at training camp practices, often standing on the sideline with defensive back Jalen Ramsey, who was activated off the PUP list Monday.”
After relaying the thoughts from HC Mike McCarthy alongside teammates Jalen Ramsey and Patrick Queen, Pryor illuminates how Pittsburgh does business: “As an organization, the Steelers have long maintained that they don’t negotiate contracts once the regular season starts. Despite the impending deadline, a source told ESPN that there hasn’t been meaningful progress on extension talks. The Steelers also haven’t made or received any trade calls on Porter, the source added.”
The Steelers are a proud, principled organization that will stick to their guns. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re shopping Porter (something Pryor addresses). That doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t listen if a call(s) gets made.
Right now, the Vikings boast Bryon Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, James Pierre, and Chuck Demmings as the lead corners. Next year, Rodgers will get to free agency if there’s no new deal. Murphy seems likely to be kept around due to his March restructure, a decision that makes the dead cap charge next year prohibitive with a cut.
Moving forward, then, appears to be a situation where Mr. Murphy will be in the Twin Cities for a minimum of 2026 and 2027. Ideally, Demmings develops into a strong outside corner who can someday be a CB3. Think the role that Akayleb Evans was drafted to fill before falling short.
Otherwise, Pierre is somewhat of a mystery. He played well last season but is older, sitting at 29 going into the season. Do his legs and lungs allow him to keep playing high-level football for much longer?
Trading for Joey Porter would be about improving now and in the future.
Of course, there’s the issue of cost (something being discussed in Twitter debates). Presumably, needing to hand over a lucrative deal on the back end of a trade lowers the compensation for trading for him. Is there a sweet spot where both sides are sufficiently uncomfortable yet enticed to pull off a swap?
Already, the Vikings have brought a different Steelers corner to town when they signed Pierre back in March. He has looked good in his role as the CB3 who can help on specials.

One of the 2026 Fantasy football busts the model is predicting: New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers. He’s going off the board around pick No. 33, but SportsLine’s model doesn’t even have him as a top-15 receiver. In fact, it has players such as DeVonta Smith and Nico Collins above him.
Nabers isn’t a lock to be ready to at the start of the season after tearing his ACL last season and then undergoing a follow-up procedure in the spring. Another bust that SportsLine’s Fantasy football rankings 2026 have identified: Bills running back James Cook. Cook is going off the board with an ADP around No. 10 overall and is the fifth running back being taken on average. SportsLine’s model, however, ranks him as RB No. 10, behind players such as Derrick Henry and Chase Brown, saying that he should be more of a late-second or even third round pick.
Cook has stacked two impressive seasons and was the RB6 a year ago, so it’s understandable why he’s getting first-round consideration in many drafts. He did fumble at a higher rate last season, however, and he’s not an elite target out of the backfield. The Kansas City Royals lost their second baseman midway through Tuesday’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Michael Massey was forced to exit in the bottom of the fifth inning after fielding a ground ball off the bat of Nathan Lukes and appearing to hit his head on the turf as he fell to the ground after making the throw.
The 28-year-old was visited by team training staff on the field before walking off under his own power.
Tyler Tolbert entered to take over in Massey’s place.
Massey was 0-for-2 with a walk against Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer through three trips to the plate on Tuesday.
He entered the contest slashing .275/.307/.444 with 11 home runs and 22 doubles on the season.
A fourth-round pick of the Royals in 2019, Massey is in the midst of a particularly hot August. Over his first 18 games of the month, he posted a .904 OPS.

That was how Carlos Alcaraz settled back into competitive action at the US Open, partnering the American great as she returned to her home slam after a four-year absence.
The tournament’s revamped mixed doubles format has attracted criticism for favouring the allure of the sport’s top singles stars at the expense of established doubles players.
But the crowds turned out and produced a terrific atmosphere for the tournament’s headline act, with about 15,000 people packed inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
All four doubles specialist pairings lost to a team of singles players on Tuesday, while Alcaraz and Williams fell in the quarter-finals.
Seven-time major winner Alcaraz was playing his first competitive match since April after injuring his wrist, while 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams was competing in New York for the first time since she “evolved away” from tennis in 2022.
The pair were greeted by huge cheers and were roared on throughout their opening 5-3 4-1 win against Great Britain’s Lloyd Glasspool and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe.
The 44-year-old Williams won the US Open mixed doubles title in its original format alongside Max Mirnyi in 1998 – five years before Alcaraz was born.
Almost 30 years later, Williams still had the competitive desire. She and Alcaraz enjoyed the occasion, playing with smiles on their faces and roaring each other on after winning a point.
Interviewed during a change of ends, Alcaraz said: “I’m playing next to the one and only Serena Williams, so what else can I do? Just enjoy and try to do the things she told me to do.”
Their partnership improved rapidly in their first match as they won eight of the final nine games to seal victory.
However, they were denied a place in Wednesday’s semi-finals by Italy’s world number six Flavio Cobolli and Swiss team-mate Belinda Bencic, who won 5-4 (7-4) 4-1.

Reid isn’t ready to declare Mahomes good to go for the opener next month, a Monday night date with the Denver Broncos.
“I’m literally taking it day by day. There are no predictions here on anything,” Reid said. “But if the doctors and the trainers and everybody that are involved with this give him an OK — and then most of all, if he feels like he can, then we’ll address that when we get there. But other than that, these other guys are playing quarterback and doing a nice job with it.”
Mahomes called his return to face the Broncos’ fearsome pass rush in Week 1 “the goal” at the outset of training camp. He hasn’t played in the preseason, which has followed the plan established by coaches and medical personnel.
He’s not worried about missed reps or live looks until Denver week.
“This has always been the plan,” he said Tuesday. “Be ready for training camp, get all the reps in training camp, prepare your body that way so that when we get to Week 1, you’re ready to play the game and you’ve had the right amount of time off.”
Reid does have time on his side if he’s waiting to be convinced Mahomes is ready. The Chiefs start the season almost exactly nine months from the date he suffered tears to his ACL and LCL. Their Week 1 game is scheduled for Sept. 14 and there are at least 13 more Kansas City practices scheduled before the game kicks off.
Mahomes hasn’t missed reps with the first team or taken a day off, Reid said.
“I’m someone that, if you put something in front of me, I want to go out and get it,” Mahomes said.

Star pairing Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz defeated Britain’s Lloyd Glasspool and his partner Erin Routliffe before losing in the quarter-finals of the US Open mixed doubles.
Williams – a 23-time grand slam singles champion – made her return to tennis in June at the age of 44, while seven-time major winner Alcaraz, 22, had been off the tour since April nursing a wrist injury.
The high-profile duo embraced after capitalising on a third match point at Arthur Ashe Stadium to secure a 5-3 4-1 victory in just under an hour.
“I never expected to be back on this court,” said Williams, according to usopen.org. “It’s just a really cool moment – I never thought this would happen.”
Alcaraz double-faulted on the first point en route to dropping the opening service game and admitted to feeling some nerves.
“I was out for almost five months and I almost forgot how it feels stepping out on the court once again,” said the Spaniard.
“She (Williams) made it really easy for me – just to try to enjoy it and go for it every time.”
Williams and Alcaraz were subsequently denied a semi-final spot by a 5-4 (4) 4-1 loss to fourth seeds Flavio Cobolli and Belinda Bencic.
Earlier, top seeds Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka suffered a first-round exit after surrendering a one-set lead to lose to Britain’s Henry Patten and Czech player Katerina Siniakova.
Patten and Siniakova – two of the world’s top-ranked doubles players – overcame some early nerves to complete a 1-4 4-2 10-2 comeback victory.
Djokovic – a 24-time grand slam singles champion, including four US Open titles – was aced by Siniakova on match point in the tie-break.
Patten, 30, told Sky Sports: “It wasn’t looking very good for a while. In this format, we played one bad game and all of a sudden the first set’s gone.
“We knew the same was possible in the second set and we played an amazing tie-break – Kat acing Novak on match point was pretty fun.”
Patten and Siniakova were later beaten 5-4 (6) 4-5 (3) 10-8 by married couple Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals.
The US Open mixed doubles was revamped last year to include singles stars in a bid to attract greater attention to the format.
A shorter scoring system was introduced, with only four games required to win a set in matches before the final, no ‘advantage’ scoring, and 10-point match tie-breaks instead of a third set throughout.
In qualifying for the women’s singles, British trio Fran Jones, Katie Swan and Harriet Dart each progressed to the second round.
Jones defeated Italy’s Nuria Brancaccio 6-3 6-4 after Dart overcame 16-year-old American Jordyn Hazelitt 6-0 6-7 (1) 6-1. Swan beat another American, Katrina Scott, 6-3 6-1.
Jodie Burrage lost 7-6 (1) 6-4 to Spain’s Guiomar Maristany, while compatriot Henry Searle exited men’s qualifying following a 6-1 6-2 defeat to 16-year-old American Michael Antonius.
