Asiad 2026: India’s weightlifting contingent, full schedule, streaming | Asian Games 2026
India’s weightlifting contingent will be looking to end a 28-year wait for a medal at the Asian Games when the sport takes centre stage at the Aichi-Nagoya Games 2026. Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will headline India’s four-member women’s squad and will be chasing a maiden Asian Games medal in Japan.
Chanu finished fourth in the women’s 49kg category at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, having previously finished ninth at the 2014 edition and missed the 2018 Games because of injury. She will return to the continental stage with another opportunity to add an Asian Games medal to her decorated career.
Gyaneshwari Yadav, Seram Nirupama Devi and Harjinder Kaur complete India’s weightlifting contingent. The four Indian lifters will compete in the women’s 49kg, 53kg, 61kg and 69kg categories, respectively.
Who are India’s biggest medal hopes in weightlifting for Asian Games 2026?
Mirabai Chanu will be India’s biggest medal hope in weightlifting. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist has won multiple major international medals but is yet to stand on an Asian Games podium.
Chanu competed at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, where she finished ninth. She missed the 2018 Jakarta edition because of injury before finishing fourth in the women’s 49kg category at Hangzhou 2023. Her Asian Games medal remains one of the major accolades missing from her career.
The 2026 Games offer Chanu another opportunity to achieve that milestone. She arrives in Nagoya after winning gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding further momentum to her campaign.
Indian weightlifters’ performance at the Asian Games
India has won 14 weightlifting medals at the Asian Games — five silver and nine bronze — but has never won gold in the sport at the continental event. The country’s last Asian Games weightlifting medal came through Karnam Malleswari, who won silver at the 1998 Bangkok Games.
At the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, India returned without a weightlifting medal. Mirabai Chanu came closest to the podium, finishing fourth in the women’s 49kg category after recording a total of 191kg.
Chanu’s fourth-place finish continued her wait for an Asian Games medal and will add significance to her campaign in Nagoya.

David Benavidez issued world title ultimatum by the WBA
David Benavidez is set to compete in a three-belt cruiserweight unification clash in December, but now one sanctioning body is seeking clarity on which division ‘The Mexican Monster’ seeks to remain at.
Benavidez moved up to light-heavyweight back in 2024 and he defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk on his divisional debut to get his hands on the WBC interim title, then capturing the WBA (Regular) title at 175lbs with a win over David Morrell in the fight that followed.
The Phoenix fan-favourite was then elevated to full WBC light-heavyweight world champion and he defended both that and his WBA Regular title against Anthony Yarde, before moving up to cruiserweight this year and halting Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez to capture the WBA (Super) and WBO 200lb world titles.
Now, it is believed that Benavidez has u-turned on plans to return to light-heavyweight, in favour of making the switch to cruiserweight a permanent one – opening the door for two Brits to potentially compete for the WBC 175lb world title.
With that in mind, the WBA have today requested official confirmation from Benavidez as ‘to clarify which title he intends to continue campaigning for’, presumably to allow them to strip him of the WBA (Regular) light-heavyweight title in the near future.
The WBA Championship Committee has requested David Benavidez to clarify which title he intends to continue campaigning for, following his achievement of becoming a champion in two weight classes, holding the WBA Cruiserweight and Light Heavyweight titles.
— WBA Boxing (@WBABoxing) September 22, 2026
“The WBA Championship Committee has requested David Benavidez to clarify which title he intends to continue campaigning for, following his achievement of becoming a champion in two weight classes, holding the WBA Cruiserweight and Light Heavyweight titles.”
Venezuela’s Albert Ramirez currently holds the WBA Interim light-heavyweight title and could soon be elevated into position as the new WBA (Regular) titleholder, should the WBA wish to extinguish their interim belt at 175lbs.

Eddie Hearn says he has the man to ‘finish’ Jai Opetaia: “He gets hurt a lot”
Jai Opetaia is continuing his mission to take over the cruiserweight division, but former promoter Eddie Hearn believes that he has the man to disrupt Opetaia’s momentum and hand the Aussie his first defeat.
Opetaia was stripped of his IBF cruiserweight title for the second time shortly after he announced his switch to Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing earlier this year, but the hard-hitting southpaw remains as the lineal champion, with his 31-fight undefeated record intact.
This year, despite launching a lawsuit against the IBF, Opetaia has refused to let out-of-the-ring politics impact his activity inside of it, fighting twice in 2026 and overcoming both Brandon Glanton and more recently Noel Mikaelian.
That victory over Mikaelian could be set to tee up a three-belt unified cruiserweight world title shot next May, against the winner of December’s clash between WBA and WBO titleholder David Benavidez and WBC champion Michal Cieslak.
Although, Hearn told The Stomping Ground why he will soon be pursuing a fight between Opetaia and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Pat Brown, who became the British champion in just his seventh pro contest on Saturday night.
“Because of what has been happening with me and Jai, I would love to see Pat go in there and dismantle him, if I am being honest with you.
“But [whilst] Jai is a great fighter, he gets hurt a lot by small punchers. Mikaelian is not a big puncher and he hurt him repeatedly in that fight.
“If Pat Brown hits Jai Opetaia on the chin, it will be over and he will finish him, but Pat has had seven fights. I believe that he can beat him now, we are not going to fight him now, but we want him next year.
“The only problem is that Jai Opetaia doesn’t have a world title and we want world titles.”
Alternatively, Brown may well target fellow British cruiserweight Viddal Riley in 2027, with Riley expected to compete with David Nyika for the vacant IBF cruiserweight world title in the near future, unless Opetaia is reinstated as world champion.

India’s eFootball campaign in the Asian Games ends
India’s eFootball campaign in the Asian Games ended despite holding Uzbekistan for a draw and receiving a walkover from Mongolia in Group F matches of the esports competition here on Tuesday.
Uzbekistan progressed to the quarterfinals after topping the group with four points from two outings. The top team from each group advances to the last eight round.
India also logged four points but their tally came from the draw and a walkover from Mongolia, hence finishing second behind the Uzbeks. Check Asian Games 2026 latest news here Check Asian Games 2026 medal tally here

Earlier, the Indian team comprising Danial Patel and Chinmay Sahoo played out a goalless draw against the Uzbekistan pair of Abubakir Iminjonov and Farrukh Mirkhamitov in their first match However, in their second tie, India got a walkover from the Mongolian team consisting Munkh-Ochir Batmanlai and Khantamir Munkh-Orgil.

Kevin O’Connell Sounds the Alarm on 1 Vikings Issue
The snap can’t go sailing like that. Kevin O’Connell understands the reality, swerving into the topic yesterday.
He chatted with the Minnesota media on Monday. Along the way, Coach O’Connell explained how the high-and-hot snap from C1 Blake Brandel was a critical moment that could have resulted in a bad outcome. Minnesota’s skipper knows that the snap can’t be a reoccurring issue since the margin is so small for a lot of these wins (or losses).
O’Connell’s comments: “We had the one high snap that was a critical play early on in the game that kind of flipped the field as far as field position goes.”
Note that O’Connell shoehorned the comment into the mix while reflecting on the turnover battle. Playing in such a wet, windy environment left the skipper impressed about “coming out turnover free.” The errant snap was the lonely exception to what he was saying not due to being a turnover but, rather, a play that killed a drive and pushed Minnesota back pretty far.
Kevin O’Connell Notes Bad Snap Issue
In fairness, Mr. Brandel has been playing pretty well.
The veteran is an offensive tackle who has worked to become capable of playing all five positions up front. At first, that meant kicking inside to play guard, something he did in a backup capacity before then securing the LG1 job for all of 2024. What has been a wild ride for the 2020 draftee got even wilder in 2026 with the Vikings turning to Brandel to be the starting center rather than emergency depth.

And, to be sure, the bad snap is forgivable.
The Vikings’ offense was seeing the clock tick down. Seeking to avoid a delay of game penalty, Carson Wentz was conveying urgency to get the ball snapped. Blake Brandel then launched the pigskin sailing over the 6’5″ quarterback’s head. What had been a 3rd and 2 became 4th and 24. Losing 22 yards is a backbreaking, drive-killing moment that Minnesota found a way to overcome.

— READ MORE: A Baffling Dallas Turner Take Makes the Rounds —
The Vikings won the contest by a score of 9-3, showing that the margin was thin. Credit to Wentz for hustling back to secure the football so that the special teams could then punt the ball away.
Blake Brandel likely has never snapped in such tough conditions. The mixture of the terrible weather alongside the urgency of needing to get the ball out due the clock ticking down is where experience (or a lack thereof) really factors into the mix. Again, give him some grace even if there needs to be urgency to ensure it doesn’t become a problem yet again.

On Sunday, Kevin O’Connell’s Vikings will be going down to Tampa Bay for a battle with the 0-2 Buccaneers. Look for Baker Mayfield’s crew to be desperate.
The Vikings will be rallying around Kyler Murray as the QB1 yet again due to clearing the concussion protocol. At the risk of being overly obvious, Murray isn’t the tallest, brawniest passer. Consider, as well, that Mr. Murray tends to prefer operating out of shotgun.
Brandel’s task is to ensure that the ball gets put directly into Murray’s mitts on an every-down basis. O’Connell knows it’s an issue that can’t continue; Brandel does, as well. We’ll see if Minnesota can make it happen.

Super Eagles Begin AFCON 2027 Qualifier Preparations in Uyo
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have started preparations for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign ahead of Friday’s clash with Madagascar.
Head coach Eric Chelle held his first training session with the team on Tuesday, September 22, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Twenty-three players are currently in camp, with Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, captain Wilfred Ndidi and AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze among the latest arrivals.
Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is the only player yet to join the squad.
The Nigeria Football Federation named Nwabali, Okonkwo and Okoye as the three goalkeepers for the qualifiers.
Nwabali returns to the Super Eagles after missing Nigeria’s recent international assignments. He was the team’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2025 AFCON, where he saved two penalties against Egypt as Nigeria finished with the bronze medal.
Okonkwo has also earned his place in the squad after his performances during Nigeria’s Unity Cup campaign. The goalkeeper could make his competitive debut for the Super Eagles against Madagascar or Guinea-Bissau.
Okoye brings recent international experience, having started Nigeria’s two friendly matches against Poland and Portugal in June. He played the full 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Poland before featuring in the 2-1 defeat to Portugal.
The Udinese goalkeeper was in club action on Saturday, when his team suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Cagliari in Serie A.
Nigeria will face Madagascar on Friday, September 25, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, before travelling to Bissau for their second Group L qualifier against Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

Terence Crawford says he wants to see Naoya Inoue face one man next
Terence Crawford has made it clear who he wants undisputed super-bantamweight king Naoya Inoue to go up against in his next outing.
Inoue captured the undisputed 122lb crown back in 2023 with back-to-back knockout wins over unified champions Stephen Fulton and Marlon Tapales, and since then ‘The Monster’ has gone on to make a remarkable seven defences of all four of those world titles.
The most recent of those victories was his best to date, as he outpointed countryman and fellow pound-for-pound star Junto Nakatani, stopping ‘Big Bang’ from joining him in the elite club of Japanese four-division world champions; which currently consists of Kazuto Ioka, Kosei Tanaka and himself.
Inoue is now set to be targeting a return to action in spring 2027; against either Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez or a featherweight world champion, and on his X account, Crawford has had his say.
He has urged Inoue to face ‘Bam’, listing the potential undisputed super-bantamweight title showdown as the first fight amongst a host of other possible match-ups that ‘Bud’ is keen to see.
Whilst Inoue has threatened to move on from Rodriguez if he cannot be fit for the spring, it seems as though Rodriguez, who holds the WBA bantamweight world title, will first fight in a 118lb title unification against WBO titleholder Christian Medina before the end of the year.
Then, a decision will be made as to whether the Texan is happy to venture up to super-bantamweight or if Inoue should finally make his long-awaited move into the featherweight division for his March or April outing.

Asiad 2026: Toor targets historic hat-trick as India eye athletics glory | Asian Games 2026
Star shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor would be gunning for a historic hat-trick of gold while the likes of long jumper Murali Sreeshankar and long distance runner Gulveer Singh aim to better the colour of medal they had won last time when India begins its athletics campaign at the Asian Games on Thursday.
India is one of the athletics powerhouses in Asian Games and the country is expected to preserve that reputation this time also, though without superstar javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who has pulled out due to an injury.
The 75-member Indian athletics team is aiming for 25 to 30 medals. It won 29 medals — 6 gold, 14 silver, 9 bronze — last time in Hangzhou, China.
On Thursday, triple jumper Asha Ilango will be first up in a medal event involving an Indian, followed by Seema in 10,000m. In the 4x400m mixed relay, the other medal event on Thursday, India is a contender for a podium finish. Sprinters Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh will also run their 100m heat races.
If Toor wins a gold, for which he is the favourite, he will enter history books as he will become the first Indian track and field athlete to stand on top of podium in three successive Asian Games in a single event.
Legendary thrower Parduman Singh Brar won two shot put gold medals in 1954 ad 1958 Asian Games, and Toor will go past him if he wins on Thursday. Brar, though, has three gold medals in his name, with another in discus throw in 1954 Games.
The most gold and overall medals by an Indian track and field athlete was won by the legendary PT Usha, who has four gold (all in 1986 Seoul) and seven silver in her name.
Sreeshankar won a silver in the last Asian Games and the 27-year-old would be aiming for a gold this time. He has jumped beyond 8m in all the seven competitions he participated this season. He arrived in Japan early before the other team-mates joined him on September 13 at the University of Tsukuba near Tokyo for an acclimatisation camp.
But it will not be easy for him, though he is the season leader among the Asians with 8.38m. He will have to fight with Yuan Chenlong — second in Asian season list with 8.33m — of China and Uzbekistan’s Anvar Anarov (season best 8.29m). China has also fielded Shi Yuhao, who won a bronze in the 2022 Games.
India is also fielding David Solomon (SB: 8.22m), a last minute addition to the team in place of injured Shahnavaz Khan.
Gulveer has been entered in three events — 1500m, 5000m and 10,000 — and he would be looking for at least two medals. He had won a 10,000m bronze in 2022 Asian Games, and holds national records in both 5,000m and 10,000m.
In 5000m, Gulveer (SB: 13:03.93) will have to compete with Ethiopian-born defending champion Birhanu Balew of Bahrain. It will be a tough proposition for Gulveer (second in Asian top list) to beat the Bahrain athlete.
Gulveer will also have his task cut out in the 10,000m race with Japan’s Asian leader Mebuki Suzuki (27:20.11) in the fray. The Indian is ranked second in the Asian season list with his 27:24.18 performance in June. Check Asian Games 2026 latest news here Check Asian Games 2026 medal tally here
Sable to run in 3000m steeplechase and 5,000m Spotlight will also be on Avinash Sable as he attempts to defend his 3000m steeplechase gold he had won in last Asian Games, despite running just one race this season. He had a long injury lay-off after undergoing an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery last year. He has also got a last-minute inclusion in 5,000m race, in which he had won a silver in the last edition.
A silver winner at the 2022 Asian Games, long jumper Ancy Sojan would be hoping to upgrade the medal to gold and she is the Asian leader with her 6.88m effort in June.
Despite the absence of Chopra in men’s javelin throw, India can still win a medal through Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh. Rohit (SB: 87.68m) and Glasgow CWG medallist Yashvir (SB: 85.41m) are currently at third and fourth among Asian season leaders.
The hot favourite to win the gold is Sri Lankan Rumesh Pathirage, who has sent his spear beyond 90m mark thrice this season with 92.62m being his best. Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem is also in fray but he has been struggling with a season best of 81.49m.
National record holder decathlete Tejaswin Shankar will have to be ready for a tough competition against Japan’s Yuma Maruyama who leads the Asian season chart with 8321 points in the 10-event discipline. Tejaswin, who had pulled out midway high jump competition at the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games due a recurring knee problem, has a personal best of 8057 points which he accumulated in May.
Commonwealth Games silver medallist high jumper Sarvesh Kushare is the Asian season leader with his 2.31m effort in June, but he also is carrying a niggle. Moreover, the high jump field in Asian Games will be top class, with multiple Olympic and world medallist Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar in the fray.
Triple jumper Praveen Chithravel and 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji have won a bronze and silver respectively in the last edition of the Asian Games but both had dealt with minor injuries recently.
Among other medal contenders are quarter-miler Vishal TK, 3000m steeplechaser Parul Chaudhary, Harita Bhadra (200m) and Pooja Singh (high jump).

Dana White’s Contender Series Week 7 Predictions and Picks
Week 7 of Dana White’s Contender Series lands Tuesday, September 22, live from Meta APEX in Las Vegas on Paramount+ at 7 p.m. ET.
This is one of the deepest cards of the season, headlined by a pair of well-rounded wrestlers and featuring what could be the best pure striking matchup Season 10 has produced. Here’s a full breakdown of every fight and my picks.
Norbert Novenyi Jr. (10-1) vs. Theo Haig (7-1)
Both fighters bring legitimate wrestling pedigrees, which should largely neutralize each other and shift this fight toward whoever is the better all-around athlete. Novenyi, a Bellator veteran out of London Shootfighters, has the sharper hands and more finishing experience on the feet, while Haig has been sharpening his own striking at American Kickboxing Academy since his last Contender Series appearance. The key variable is that Novenyi has already been tested at a higher level in Bellator, giving him composure in scramble situations that Haig hasn’t had to develop yet. When the wrestling cancels out, Novenyi’s cleaner technical striking should be the separator.
Pick: Norbert Novenyi Jr. by TKO, Round 2

Channel debug: betting
This is the best pure fight on the card, pitting two of the most complete welterweight prospects in this Contender Series season against each other. Dasuyev is a nasty, well-rounded striker with a strong wrestling base out of Deathrow MMA, giving him multiple ways to win. Ortega counters with flashy, violent striking, including spinning and flying attacks, and has finished five of his six career wins by knockout. The deciding factor should be Dasuyev’s ability to mix in takedowns if the striking exchanges get dangerous, giving him a safety valve that Ortega, a pure striker, simply doesn’t have.
Pick: Alvi Dasuyev by decision Degli is the most explosive fighter on this entire card, a heavy-handed brawler who throws with reckless power to the head and body and finishes at a high rate for the flyweight division. Moran, a 17-fight veteran out of Gracie Barra, is the clear grappler in this matchup and will need to change levels quickly to have a chance, since Degli is also a capable grappler in his own right and won’t be an easy takedown. If Degli can keep this standing even briefly, his power and volume should be too much for Moran to survive.
Pick: Marcos Degli by TKO, Round 1
Alvi Dasuyev (9-0) vs. Jaden Ortega (6-0)
Marcos Degli (14-3) vs. Paris Moran (14-3)

Piero Guaylupo (11-0) vs. Callum Connor (8-0)
Both lightweights are undefeated strikers who like to plant their feet and trade, setting up a genuine firefight. Guaylupo brings nasty kicks and heavy hands from Peru, while Connor, despite a significant height advantage at 6-foot to Guaylupo’s 5-foot-9, has built his record against lighter regional competition. The height difference could matter if Connor uses it to control range with his jab and kicks, but Guaylupo’s power and craft against tougher opposition should let him close distance and land the more damaging shots when the two inevitably meet in the pocket.
Pick: Piero Guaylupo by TKO, Round 2
Damian Piwowarczyk (11-4) vs. Emilio Quissua (8-0)
This fight represents two of Europe’s top promotions, with Quissua repping OKTAGON and Piwowarczyk repping KSW. Quissua brings a kickboxing background and well-rounded striking, while Piwowarczyk uses his massive 6-foot-6 frame to strike from range and also carries a legitimate submission arsenal as a backup plan. The size and reach differential should let Piwowarczyk dictate distance behind his jab and kicks, and if the fight does hit the mat, his submission skills give him a finishing route that Quissua’s game doesn’t clearly counter.
Pick: Damian Piwowarczyk by decision
