‘Best feeling in the world’: Seth Jarvis’s heroics give Hurricanes life

RALEIGH, N.C. — Before the puck dropped on the biggest series of Seth Jarvis’s life, the Carolina Hurricanes’ most threatening scorer thought back to the countless times he scored a Stanley Cup overtime winner on a Winnipeg driveway.

“I might be undefeated,” Jarvis smiled. “I might never have lost a Cup in my mind. But this is a little more real now — and way more exciting.”

Jarvis does the math. He was four years old, going to preschool and fluttering in Cup clinchers on his driveway net in 2006, the last time a Hurricane scored a winning goal in a final.

Late Thursday, Jarvis — a key cog in the 2026 series’ most criticized power play and line — stopped the clock in Period 4, knotted the series, blew the roof off Lenovo Center, and realized a dream.

“That was the best feeling in the world,” said Jarvis, following Carolina’s 4-3 comeback overtime win.

“I’ve imagined doing that a lot. To be able to do it in real life is awesome.”

The whole night was awesome.

A pair of strong finishes by scoring-hot Brett Howden jolted the Vegas Golden Knights to an early 2-0 lead, and the veteran group appeared set to grind away the clock and snatch a pair on the road.

“We were looking for a spark,” Carolina captain Jordan Staal said.

Coach Rod Brind’Amour flipped Jarvis down to Staal’s line and bumped Jordan Martinook up with Sebastian Aho, who ripped a game-high four shots, his most since April.

Then they found their spark, from the smallest guy in the series, just plugging away.

A sturdy Logan Stankoven beat Rasmus Andersson for a puck behind the Vegas net, took it hard to the crease on his backhand and squeaked a puck past Carter Hart.

The place erupted. Petey Pablo’s “Raise Up” rocked the barn.

“Unbelievable. That’s probably the loudest building I’ve ever played in,” Stankoven said. “We feed off that.”

Fourth-liner William Carrier fed off it, somehow staying onside, hoofing a loose puck to his blade and putting it on Mark Jankowski’s tape while wearing defender Jeremy Lauzon like a poncho. Jankowski tied it. Two remarkable solo-effort plays in less than three minutes.

“The average fan wouldn’t really realize how exceptional a play that was. That guy is so strong. And it’s just like you can’t take him down,” Staal said of Carrier. “He wasn’t giving up on that play.”

The Canes refused to give up on this game, then they got a little help from John Tortorella.

Frederik Andersen made a sprawling paddle save on Ivan Barbashev but the puck did cross the line on a second attempt that got waved off due to goalie interference.

Vegas’s coach challenged a decision Brind’Amour suggested he would not, then Staal scored on the ensuing power play, as Tortorella got dinged for delay of game.

Dozens of grown men doffed their shirts, for better or worse, and waved them ’round their heads like a helicopter. One fan proudly held aloft a homemade sign: REAL HOCKEY PLAYERS DO NOT WEAR GLITTER.

“That’s the best thing about them — they’re crazy. It’s an amazing atmosphere to play in, and to have people like that. It’s not warm in there, so to take your tarps off and kind of get the crowd going and get the energy going, that’s kind of what kick-started our whole little press there in the third,” Jarvis smiled.

“Yeah, I’ve not lived that a lot, to be honest with you, in my career,” Carrier marvelled. “The energy was unbelievable. Saw a couple T-shirts off too there, in the stands. May be a new thing, and the energy was incredible.”

So even though Mark Stone countered late and pushed the night into a fourth period, Carolina had its mojo back. The Lenny got lit.

Yet Brind’Amour sensed calm in the home room before Jarvis walked out into the chaos and played hero on the ultimate driveway.

“That could easily have gone a different way of how we felt about it, because that emotion, the last 10 minutes, I mean, you can’t get much more exciting hockey than that, right?” Brind’Amour said. “Like, it’s up, down, up, down. So, it was good that we’re able to just kind of park everything and go play.”

With Jarvis bending the twine in the 64th minute, Carolina’s big guns and a previously slumping power play on the sheet, and a magical overtime record increasing to 6-0 this spring, we have ourselves a series, folks.

“What a crowd, what a night,” Staal said.

Best of five, and everyone’s alive.

“A new shot of life is what it feels like,” Brind’Amour said.

The series is flying off for a weekend in Vegas, but it won’t stay there.

“This is exciting,” Jarvis said, riding his high past midnight. “This is what playoff hockey is all about. Tight games and momentum swings, and you never really know what’s going to happen next.

“I don’t think you can ask any more of a playoff series.”

• Brayden McNabb took a vicious Nikolaj Ehlers slapshot square in the face and rushed off the ice midway through the first period, leaving Vegas with five defencemen.

“It’s terrifying,” Mitch Marner said. “Hopefully he’s all good. But he’s a warrior.”

Tortorella had no update on McNabb’s health post-game. Kaeden Korczak is the next man up.

• Howden, your playoff goal-scoring leader with 13, is proving to be this post-season’s greatest bargain.

The winger is signed through 2029-30 at a paltry $2.5-million cap hit. Absolute steal.

• Andersen made the biggest save of the night, but the Canes’ presumptive Conn Smythe favourite’s numbers have slipped in the back half of this run.

Andersen posted an eye-popping .950 save percentage through the sweeps of Ottawa and Philadelphia. Since then, he’s been an .869.

To a man, the Canes are backing their guy, of course.

“The save percentage count is a tough one for our team. I know often we don’t give up a lot. There’s still quality chances; there’s just not a lot of fluff,” Brind’Amour said. “I’m not concerned about it.

“But we’re mindful of it. I mean, he knows what he needs. And if he starts feeling a little fatigued, he’s going to let us know. But I don’t think that’s going to be an issue.”

• Our favourite Stanley Cup stat: This is the 46th consecutive Final in which a former teammate of Jaromir Jágr has participated. Golden Knights defenceman Rasmus Andersson shared a dressing room with Jágr in Calgary (2017-18).

• Excellent viewership south of the border for Game 1, a nine-goal thriller that averaged 4.8 million viewers on ESPN. That makes it the most-watched Stanley Cup Final opener since the Blues and Bruins faced off in 2019.

Authorities in New York are searching for a man suspected of an assault outside Madison Square Garden that left a teenager in a coma following Game 4 of the NBA Finals.

According to the New York Police Department, a group approached the 17-year-old after Wednesday’s game and an argument ensued. The NYPD shared a photo on X of a suspect who allegedly punched and kicked the teen, who lapsed into a coma after suffering a seizure.

The NYPD has not provided an update on the condition of the teenager, whose name is being withheld.

Violent incidents have flared up in the city as the Knicks seek their first NBA championship in 53 years. They took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series with a 107-106 victory against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

Police arrested at least 15 people following that game. In addition, videos on social media appeared to show fans throwing eggs at Spurs star Victor Wembanyama as he entered his team’s hotel.

“Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game,” the NYPD said in a statement Thursday. “This demonstrates exactly why the NYPD has increased our presence in and around Madison Square Garden.”

Game 5 is Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas. Game 6, if necessary, will be at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

How much are tickets for the United States’ World Cup bandwagon?

According to the resale market, they start at $1,735.

That was the “get in price” for the U.S. men’s national team’s second World Cup group stage match against Australia on the secondary market by Saturday afternoon, according to TicketData.

That represents an enormous 61% increase over the last three days, with much of that spike coming following the USMNT’s exceptional performance in a 4-1 rout of Paraguay in Friday night’s World Cup opener in Inglewood, Calif.

There is plenty of time for the price to climb further, as the match is not until Friday at 3 p.m. ET in Seattle.

The Americans’ Group D finale on June 25 against Turkey back in Inglewood, Calif., has seen an even greater proportional spike over the same stretch, with the get-in price up 73% to $1,516.

If this reflects surging expectations for a squad that has seen mixed performances in recent years, it’s understandable.

Friday’s victory, powered by two goals from Folarin Balogun, another from Gio Reyna and a Paraguay own-goal, marked the first time the USMNT had ever scored four times in a World Cup finals match and only the third time they had ever won by three goals.

The other two three-goal triumphs were 3-0 group stage wins over Belgium and Paraguay in the inaugural 1930 tournament played in Uruguay.

Bookmakers also are improving their view of the USMNT. Their average World Cup title-winning odds dropped to 40-to-1, according to OddsPortal, after beginning the tournament at 50-to-1 or higher, depending on the oddsmaker.

The Americans are now the fourth-most-expensive draw in the tournament as of early Saturday afternoon, behind only co-host Mexico, Brazil and Portugal.

Liberty look to keep hot streak going, host Mystics

If the New York Liberty win their next two games, they will clinch a spot in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final on June 30.

The Liberty — who are 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the Cup standings — will play host to Washington on Sunday afternoon. After that, the Liberty will visit Chicago on Wednesday in their final pool-play game.

On Thursday, the Liberty defeated the host Atlanta Dream, 104-90, in New York’s highest-scoring game since the season opener.

It was also New York’s sixth straight win as the Liberty shot 54% from the floor and 52% on 3-pointers (16-for-31). The Liberty also had a 40-24 advantage on the boards against an Atlanta team that entered the game No. 1 in the WNBA in rebounding.

“We were just ready,” said Liberty guard Marine Johannes, who scored 17 points.

In fact, for the first time in franchise history, the Liberty had five players score at least 16 points.

The only thing not perfect about the Liberty right now is that point guard Sabrina Ionescu hasn’t played since May 24 due to a back injury, although she has been practicing lately.

Breanna Stewart leads New York in scoring (20.4), Jonquel Jones leads the team in rebounds (9.6) and rookie Pauline Astier tops the squad in assists (3.8).

Meanwhile, Washington (5-6) is 2-2 in the Commissioner’s Cup.

The Mystics beat Toronto 86-85 on Friday night on Sonia Citron’s turnaround jumper at the buzzer.

Washington prevailed despite a season-high 22 turnovers, shooting just 2-of-18 on 3-pointers and playing without standout Kiki Iriafen, who has an injured right ankle. She is averaging 14.6 points and a team-high 8.9 rebounds.

The Mystics are largely a product of their nine first-round picks, including seven they have selected since 2022. Citron (third overall) and Iriafen (fourth overall) were drafted in 2025, and the former leads the team in scoring (17.1).

Then there’s 6-5 center Shakira Austin, a top contender for the WNBA’s Most Improved Player award. Austin is averaging 15.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists — all career highs.

That’s some progression for the 25-year-old Austin, who was the third overall pick in 2022.

Two other Mystics first-rounders of note are a pair of rookies: 6-7 center Lauren Betts (fourth overall in 2026) and point guard Georgia Amoore (sixth overall in 2025).

Betts scored a season-high 18 points on Friday, making 8 of 9 shots. With Iriafen out, she got extended minutes — a season-high 21.

Amoore leads Washington in assists (3.8).

The Liberty will be the more rested team on Sunday.

And, in the only game between Washington and New York so far this season, the Liberty won, 98-93, in overtime. Iriafen led the Mystics with 20 points and 12 rebounds, but she is likely unavailable on Sunday.

On the positive side for Washington, Citron is feeling better after an injury caused her to miss a game on June 2.

“My foot is good,” Citron said. “I’m happy to be back.”

GM Nolan Teasley keeps making moves. The Vikings pickups involved bringing someone over from Cleveland and someone from Seattle.

Check out what Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network had to say: “The #Vikings plan to name Andrew Healy and Trent Kirchner as assistant GMs, adding two highly respected executives to the club’s football operation. Healy, who will serve as the team’s secondary football executive, while Kirchner is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s top talent evaluators.”

Alec Lewis sent along some added context: “The Vikings intend to name Andrew Healy and Trent Kirchner as assistant general managers in the coming days, per sources. Huge hires. Healey will serve as the team’s secondary football executive, revered for analytics; Kirchner is a premier evaluator.”

Vikings Pickup Front Office Talent

Recently, the news emerged of moving on from other executives.

In particular, there was the loss of Demetrius Washington, who is a brain. All along, the possibility existed that the Assistant GM would depart since he has a strong history and relationship with Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. He has been set free, allowed to chase his next opportunity.

Likewise, the Vikings opted to move on from Jamaal Stephenson, Pat Roberts, and Salli Clavelle.

Prior to the GM decision being made — Nolan Teasley was a wise decision — PurplePTSD offered a piece considering Trent Kirchner. Consider a thought: “Quite possibly, Kirchner isn’t going to be a serious candidate. The general thought, though, of digging into Seattle’s brain trust makes a lot of sense. There has been a pile connections between Seattle and Minnesota; the Seahawks have proven to be far, far better over past couple decades.”

And another: “Another thought: when the Vikings needed more help to bridge the gap to a full-time GM, a former Seattle executive came over. Keep an eye on the ‘Hawks.”

Fast forward from the original publication of that piece (April 17th, 2026) and there’s no reason for a victory lap. After all, the guess was for Trent Kirchner to be the GM rather than Nolan Teasley. Nevertheless, there’s some merit within the insistence that plundering Seattle’s front office made sense.

Generally speaking, Minnesotans don’t have a great opinion of Adofo-Mensah since the former GM did so terribly in the draft (which is to say nothing of last year’s QB disaster). Does another analytics mind from Cleveland make sense? Some were left wanting more in the last decision maker who did analytics for the Browns.

The easy-to-connect dots are there for the taking, but every person should be allowed to shine or stumble based on his/her own merits (or lack thereof). The Browns, a terrible team, have nevertheless done some fantastic work of finding talent in the draft. Give Healy a fair shot.

Meanwhile, Uruguay are the only nation at the World Cup that chose not to play any friendly matches in the immediate lead-up to the tournament, instead opting to let their players get some extra rest before joining the training camp and focusing on the tournament.

As such, La Celeste‘s most recent friendly matches were a pair of draws against England (1-1) and Algeria (0-0) in March.

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa is famous for the relentless physical intensity of his training sessions, which often make his players particularly fit and mentally resilient. The Sky Blues can count on stars such as Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde, former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, and Tottenham‘s Rodrigo Bentancur.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay head-to-head stats and key numbers

Uruguay and Saudi Arabia have faced each other three times in their history, with the head-to-head record being exactly even, with a draw and one win apiece.
However, Uruguayans would argue that their country won when it mattered, in their most recent match at the 2018 World Cup (2-1), while the other games were friendlies.
Uruguay have won the World Cup twice (in 1930 and 1950).
This will be Uruguay’s 16th World Cup tournament, while Saudi Arabia have qualified for the World Cup seven times.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay prediction

Uruguay are expected to control possession and dictate the tempo through a high-intensity pressing structure that is typical of Bielsa’s teams. Saudi Arabia will try to be compact and well-organized at the back, with counterattacking football set to be their main threat up front.

Uruguay have struggled to score in recent games, but they still possess the quality to secure an opening-match victory over Saudi Arabia.
