‘Close’ – Pep Guardiola’s real reason for rejecting first job since Man City exit

Published

on

Pep Guardiola was close to becoming the next Italy national team head coach after leaving Manchester City earlier this summer, before ultimately turning down the role

Paolo Maldini says Pep Guardiola turned down the chance to become Italy’s head coach because of tiredness.

Guardiola, 55, left Manchester City after a decade as manager at the end of last season. That stint was longer than his time coaching Barcelona, including his season in charge of their B team, and Bayern Munich combined.

However, having previously played for Brescia and Roma in Italy, the Catalan coach held talks with the Italian Football Federation about the vacancy. Maldini was their technical director at the time and has since resigned, but recently reflected on his 16 days in that role.

Asked what really happened with Guardiola, Maldini told Corriere della Sera: “He is the coach who most embodies the technical and offensive game.

“Through some friends, he had expressed interest in coaching a national team. We went to visit him in Barcelona, we had lunch together, and we talked for a whole day. He was very tempted; he came very close to accepting. He had also started writing formations on papers.”

Maldini denied that Guardiola asked for a £17million annual salary. He replied when asked about those claims: “Absolutely not. Money has never been an issue. Pep told us clearly: ‘give me one euro less than what the last coach took, and I’m fine’.”

On the subject of why he refused to become Italy’s new coach, Maldini said: “Because of tiredness. Guardiola comes from 10 gruelling years in the Premier League. He had back surgery, and he wants to rest, but it was a very serious discussion; we studied the squads, from the under-17s upwards…”

He also offered another insight about what Guardiola said unprompted before the end of the interview. Asked about how he feels, Maldini said: “I have a worry that I will carry inside.

“I had taken on a heavy commitment that in the days had become almost a dream: to do something for the next generations, to build a competitive Italy – an interrupted but beautiful dream, also for the many people I had found willing to work.

“Do you know what Guardiola has talked to us about at length? Of the impact that (Johan) Cruyff had on Spanish football.

“For two years, he was fought by everyone, but if Spain creates talent today, it is thanks to Cruyff’s instructions. We don’t want to compare ourselves to him, but that was the way.

“Difficult, long, but it would have changed the identity of Italian football. It’s a shame, a real shame.”

Former champion says Conor Benn ‘doesn’t belong in the ring with Ryan Garcia’: “KO in 6”

Published

on

A former world champion believes Ryan Garcia will knock out Conor Benn inside six rounds, underlining a glaring difference between them in skill and power.

The 28-year-old is making a first defence of his WBC title on September 12, headlining a Zuffa Boxing and Golden Boy co-promoted show at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

‘King Ry’ claimed his welterweight strap in February, dethroning Mario Barrios with a unanimous decision after scoring a first-round knockdown.

This followed his points defeat to Rolando Romero in May 2025, back when he returned from a year-long doping suspension after testing positive for banned substance ostarine.

But while it has been far from plain sailing for Garcia, the talented American is nonetheless considered a sizable favourite against mandatory challenger Benn.

Despite being the WBC’s leading contender at 147lbs, ‘The Destroyer’ has not fought at the weight in over four years and, generally speaking, has done very little to justify his world title shot.

Even when considering his most notable victory, a unanimous decision against Chris Eubank Jr in November, it seems Benn is still yet to prove himself at world level.

Speaking with Pro Boxing Fans, Paulie Malignaggi simply echoed the opinion that many have already expressed.

“Ryan knocks him out. The fight doesn’t go six rounds, in my opinion. [There’s a] disparity in skill; disparity in power. I don’t think Conor Benn’s that good.

“[Whereas] Ryan Garcia’s a very good fighter when he’s motivated. This fight is an opportunity for him to make a statement, because he’s fighting a guy who’s got a big name but also a guy who probably doesn’t belong in the ring with him.”

While attempting to make 147lbs, Benn has revealed that his future fights will be at higher weights.

Pirates vs. Mets: New York money line (+131)

“The Mets were blanked on Saturday, but had scored six-plus runs in four straight prior, and overall are hitting well. No so for the Pirates, who are 3-9 in their last 12 and have scored five runs once in the last 11. Jared Jones isn’t going deep into games for Pittsburgh,” SportsLine MLB expert Adam Thompson said. “For the Mets, Sean Manaea has gone six innings in three straight, all quality starts, and the bullpen has a 1.82 ERA the last two weeks. Tasty plus odds on the road side.” Bet on Mets-Pirates at DraftKings here and claim $150 in bonus bets after your first $5 wager as a new user

Marlins vs. Angels: Miami money line (-142)

“Marlins pitcher Ryan Gusto limited the Braves to one run over six innings last time out. No team has hit worse over the last two weeks than the Angels, whose .587 OPS off right-handers in that span also ranks 30th,” Thompson said. “The Marlins’ bats scored seven runs on Saturday, breaking out of a five-game offensive slump. They can keep it going here vs. Grayson Rodriguez, who has a 7.44 ERA on the season, 7.24 in 11 day games.” Bet on Angels-Marlins at DraftKings here and claim $150 in bonus bets after your first $5 wager as a new user:

Padres vs. Astros: Houston +1.5 (-193)

The Astros have won 13 of their last 17 games to surge to first in the AL West standings, but they’re holding a slim half-game lead over the Rangers entering Sunday. Meanwhile, the Padres are third in the NL West and are a game behind the Diamondbacks and Phillies for the final NL Wild Card spot. Randy Vazquez and Cristian Javier both posted quality starts in their last outings, but generally haven’t gone very deep into games this season. The model predicts that Houston covers on the run line in 70% of simulations. Bet on Astros vs. Padres at DraftKings here and claim $150 in bonus bets after your first $5 wager as a new user

Columbus Crew vs Pumas UNAM Prediction and Betting Tips

Published

on

ScottsMiracle-Gro Field stages the final 2026 Leagues Cup league-phase fixture between Columbus Crew and Pumas UNAM on Tuesday. Both sides face off in Ohio this week with contrasting objectives, as the hosts aim to book a spot in the quarter-finals while the visitors are effectively playing for pride, with their chances of advancing appearing almost non-existent.

Brais Mendez’s superb start to life in the United States continued on Friday as the former Real Sociedad man found the net for Columbus against Pachuca. An acrobatic effort in the 18th minute made it three goals in three games for the Spaniard and gave the Crew an early lead.

Daniel Gazdag’s close-range header just before the interval put Columbus two goals to the good, after which goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made multiple key saves in the second half to seal a 2-1 victory for Laurent Courtois’ men.

With six points from a possible six, Columbus now sit third in the MLS standings and should guarantee a spot in the knockout rounds with a big win here.

For Pumas UNAM, meanwhile, all hope may already be lost heading into the third round of fixtures after two fruitless outings over the past week.

Fresh off a deflating 3-0 defeat to Charlotte FC on the opening day, Pumas traveled to the American Midwest to face FC Cincinnati last time out, turning in yet another positive attacking showing. However, they were guilty of wasteful finishing and once again came away empty-handed after falling 2-0.

The visitors now sit rock-bottom in the Liga MX standings and will need an almost extraordinary series of results elsewhere to stand a chance of qualifying.

Columbus Crew vs Pumas UNAM Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

  • Tuesday’s game will mark the first-ever meeting between Columbus and Pumas.
  • Columbus have never lost a Leagues Cup game to a Mexican side in regulation time.
  • Pumas have lost four of their last six Leagues Cup encounters with MLS sides.
  • Neither side has kept a clean sheet in their last five competitive outings.

Columbus Crew vs Pumas UNAM Prediction

Columbus’ last eight victories have come at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, suggesting the Crew tend to make the most of their home advantage, and they will aim to continue in the same vein this week.

Pumas have shown in the Leagues Cup so far that they are happy to play on the front foot. However, their defensive frailties could prove costly once again.

Prediction: Columbus Crew 2-1 Pumas UNAM
