Manchester United have been scouting around for a potential JJ Gabriel replacement after the 15-year-old sensation made it clear he wanted to quit Old Trafford

Manchester United have lined up Lens midfielder Mezian Mesloub as a potential replacement for JJ Gabriel.

Last week, The Telegraph first reported that Gabriel, 15, had sent formal notice that he wishes to cancel his registration at the club with immediate effect to become a free agent.

United were left stunned by Gabriel’s decision and he was due to be involved in the Carabao Cup squad to face Brighton. If he had featured, he would have become the club’s youngest-ever player, eclipsing David Gaskell, who was 16 years and 19 days old when he debuted back in 1956.

Despite this, United believe the situation can still be resolved with Gabriel still having time left on his contract. He cannot be de‑registered unless all parties agree, but he is going to be able to negotiate a move abroad once he turns 16 next month, helped by the fact he has an Irish passport.

Although United are refusing to give up losing Gabriel, they are scouting around for a potential replacement in case he leaves and Lens teenager Mesloub has emerged as a target, according to TEAMtalk.

United’s scouting department like Mesloub and feel he has serious potential for the future. The 16-year-old is developing into one of the most talked about young players in European football after making his debut for Lens last season and making an impact on the senior stage.

Chiefs at Old Trafford have been carrying out extensive work on Mesloub as they assess his development and consider whether he could be a long-term success for the Reds.

Mesloub made his professional debut for Lens in May 2026, coming off the bench against Nantes and scoring just five seconds after being introduced as he helped his side secure the win.

He has since attracted attention for his performances and made his Champions League debut as a second-half substitute against Slavia Prague earlier this month, providing an assist in a 3-2 win.

The 2009-born sensation, who is 17 in November, is right now being used as an inverted right winger for Lens but can be adopted as a No.10 and on the left-hand side instead. He is a creative player and has already developed a reputation for his athletitism, technical ability and composure in the final third.

More than 160 Irish sportspeople have signed an open letter by the Irish Sport for Palestine Group to urge a boycott of the games against Israel.

The Republic of Ireland are due to play Israel on 27 September in Hungary before the reverse fixture in Serbia on 4 October.

The letter states that the FAI, Uefa and the Irish government should have intervened before this stage, but there is still time to “show the power of sport to unite”.

Sportspeople such as Olympian Ciara Mageean, former Republic of Ireland footballer Louise Quinn, ex-Ireland rugby fly-half Tony Ward – who boycotted an Irish rugby tour of South Africa – and boxers Tyrone McKenna and Eric Donovan have signed the letter.

Also included in the 160 plus names are GAA’s Padraig O’Hora, Joe Brolly, Colm O’Rourke, Michael Darragh Macauley, Philly McMahon, Valerie Mulcahy and Rena Buckley, as well as para-athlete Alan Dineen and ultimate frisbee’s Stephen Jones, who both boycotted fixtures against Israel earlier this year.

“This is a significant moment and with this moment you have an opportunity to do the right thing,” the letter states.

“Putting on the Irish jersey and representing your country means something. But the Ireland we want represented is the one that remembers its roots in anti-colonial and anti-imperial resistance, which Irish sport played a large part of.

“This moment symbolises something deeper, it is bigger than sport. But in a way this IS sport.

“Not playing the game would be the most sporting thing you could do. Through your leadership and courage, it would show the power of sport to unite, remind us of the shared values that connect us all, and have an impact far beyond the game.”

The Euphrates, a former charge of Aidan O’Brien in Ireland, made a significant impression in his second start for Tulloch Lodge, achieving an impressive all-the-way victory in the Group 2 $300,000 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

“To be honest, I would have been disappointed if he didn’t win today – he’s a very, very good horse,” Bott said.

“He put the writing on the wall with a great return over the mile (fourth in the Chelmsford Stakes) earlier this month and he backed that up today,” Bott said.

“The Metropolitan has always been the plan but we have been thinking further ahead.

“The big picture is the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup with him. He has two mile form in Europe and certainly stays the trip at a higher level, and he showed that today.”

Ridden by Tim Clark, The Euphrates ($5) led from start to finish, comfortably fending off his rivals to win by close to a length from Juja Kibo ($7). The favourite, Soul Of Spain ($3.90), finished a length behind in third.

Clark reported that despite the quick tempo and fast overall time, The Euphrates gave the impression he was racing comfortably.

“He has been off the scene for such a long time but he ran pretty well first-up and credit to Gai and Adrian who were able to put the ground work into him that he could still bounce off that and not put in a flat run,” Clark said.

“He is starting to get out to a distance range that suits him now. He galloped all the way through the line and was last to pull up.

“We’ve seen so many imports come to Australia, especially with Gai and Adrian, just put that speed into their legs. He has that great stamina and I look forward when he gets over further.”

The six-year-old gelding, a son of the undefeated Frankel, who achieved a Timeform rating of 147, has added to the impressive record of Waterhouse and Bott with the stallion’s progeny, following Group 1 winners Sir Delius and Converge.

The Euphrates’ previous record included four wins from 13 starts for O’Brien, including the Listed Marble City Stake, and a fourth in the Group 1 Irish St Leger behind champion Kyprios and Vauban. He had not raced for almost two years before his Chelmsford Stakes return.

His victory in the Kingston Town Stakes confirms his strong return to racing.

“He will go to The Metropolitan next run and the further we get with him the better,” Bott said.

“Today was a dominant performance, it was great to see him stick it out as well as he did.

“He hasn’t been racing for two years so I would like to think there is further improvement to come.

“He has that brilliant tactical speed, that cruising speed, and that ability to sustain it which is going to open up some great staying feature races for him.”

The Euphrates has subsequently firmed to $5 second favouritism for the Group 2 $750,000 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on October 3. He is behind Aethelwulf ($3), the winner of the Newcastle Gold Cup on Friday.
