Oleksandr Usyk had been in talks to face a former world heavyweight champion, only for a prolonged spell of negotiations to ultimately scupper their showdown.
The three-time, two-division undisputed king has not fought since his fifth-round finish of Daniel Dubois last July, which followed his two points victories over Tyson Fury in 2024.
Having claimed those two scalps, as well as beating Anthony Joshua on two occasions, Usyk has firmly cemented himself as the greatest heavyweight and cruiserweight of his generation.
One man who had hoped to challenge that status, however, is Deontay Wilder, who was named by Usyk as a desirable opponent towards the end of last year.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ comes off a stoppage victory over little-known heavyweight Tyrrell Herndon in June, which followed his defeats against Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker.
His fifth-round stoppage loss to Zhang, in particular, left a sizable impression on the division in 2024, with many calling for the former WBC champion to retire.
But since then, Wilder has managed to secure a showdown with fellow veteran Derek Chisora at London’s O2 Arena on April 4.
This came about after the American’s talks with Usyk, who he was expected to face later this year, had collapsed at the negotiating table.
Speaking with Fight Hub TV, Wilder explained why, instead of challenging for the WBC, IBF and WBA belts, he is now facing Chisora in a non-title fight.
“Me and Derek had been working on a fight for a very long time. Actually, this fight was supposed to have happened back in December.
With the Usyk situation, it was like, ‘I’m 40 years old; I’m ready to go. I can’t sit back; I can’t sit around.’
I don’t think they [team Usyk] had a set date, a place where they wanted to go – that was still lingering around.
The clock goes like this – it’s tick-tocking.”
Perhaps a clash between Usyk and Wilder could soon be revisited, but only if the 40-year-old successfully takes care of Chisora in April.

Feb 7, 2026; San Antonio, Texas, USA; San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) shoots in the first half against the Dallas Mavericks at Frost Bank Center. Mandatory Credit: Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images Surging toward the All-Star break, the San Antonio Spurs will begin a back-to-back scenario before some much-deserved rest when they hit the road to face the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.
The second half of the back-to-back for the Spurs, who arrive in California on a four-game winning streak, will be against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday in San Francisco. The All-Star Game will be in the Los Angeles area on Sunday.
The Lakers were on a three-game winning streak and had an eight-point lead in the third quarter on Monday before falling 119-110 to the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder. Los Angeles was without Luka Doncic (hamstring) for the second consecutive game.
The Spurs got past the Thunder 116-106 on Wednesday, then earned consecutive victories over the Dallas Mavericks, including a 138-125 home decision on Saturday when they scored a season-high 81 points in the first half.
Stephon Castle poured in a career-high 40 points in a triple-double that included 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Victor Wembanyama added 16 points and 11 rebounds.
“Having a game like this is definitely a dream come true,” said Castle, who shot 15 of 19 from the floor. “It’s good to have (going) into the break and definitely a good sign. It felt good to be out there and comfortable with every shot I took and to see them go in.”
With a victory on Tuesday, San Antonio would match its longest winning streak of the season, five games, done twice before.
The Spurs have a 2-1 record against the Lakers going into the season finale between the teams. Castle is scoring 20.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists against Los Angeles this season. In the most recent game between the teams, the Spurs earned a 107-91 home victory on Jan. 7 behind 27 points from Keldon Johnson, matching his season high. It was the Lakers’ second-lowest scoring game of the season.
LeBron James logged 22 points and 10 assists in the Lakers’ loss to the Thunder on Monday in the opener of the back-to-back. James played a team-high 36 minutes. The 41-year-old veteran, in his record 23rd NBA season, has played on consecutive days just twice this season, both times in mid-January.
Marcus Smart added 19 points for Los Angeles while Austin Reaves had 16 in his fourth game after missing more than a month with a calf strain. The Lakers made half of their 84 shots in the game but were outscored 26-19 in the fourth quarter.
“I was pretty bad in that second half,” said Reaves, who shot 1 of 7 from the floor and was called for a technical foul after halftime. “I have to be better than that.” Now the Lakers will have limited preparation time following a loss to the top team in the Western Conference before facing the second-best club, the Spurs.
“When you play the best teams … you have to have a really high level of effort and you have to have a really high level of execution,” Los Angeles coach JJ Redick said. “It’s gotta be both. I thought for the most part our effort was fantastic (against the Thunder), and in the key stretches of the game, our execution wasn’t great.”
While the Lakers are 14-8 in home games this season, the Spurs are 16-10 in road games.

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City must improve or they can forget about catching Arsenal in the Premier League. The Blues stayed six points behind the leaders with a comeback victory at Anfield but City’s manager is not looking up when he can see what is directly in front of him.
City again lapsed in the second-half at Anfield – a common theme for their season as they went behind to a Dominiki Szoboszlai rocket after failing to convert their first-half play into any goals. However happy Guardiola was to come back and pick up a rare win at Liverpool, he knows that there are practical issues to address that are more important than thinking about the title race.
“I understand your question. Every time in the last weeks when I go before the game in flash interviews always is you lose you’re losing everything and going to disappear from planet Earth,” he said. “What I’m saying is what do we have to do to beat Fulham? What do we have to do to make the second half closer to the first? What is the reason why in the second half we are still dropping our performances?
“If we don’t improve that, we will not win – maybe if not against Fulham, against Newcastle or the next. I understand how nice three points or nine points and this kind of stuff is, but it doesn’t make for winning titles or arriving at the latter stages to be close to fighting for titles.”

City looked like they were about to turn the screw on Arsenal when they beat Forest after Christmas for their eighth victory in a row in all competitions, but they have stumbled since. The monster run that City have gone on in previous seasons is yet to materialise, and Guardiola isn’t sure that it will ever come with a different team. Until they get better at controlling games than they currently are, the City manager will not be getting carried away.
“When we have 60 or 70 per cent of new players, we don’t have what we had in the past,” he said. “After the second or third season we had done it, we are able to do it but now we have to prove it. I don’t know if we are able to win three, four, five, six games in a row. I don’t know. I don’t know.
“We drew at Spurs and all the comments after that second half at Spurs. It was not two months ago, it was days ago. They have done really good things. I have the feeling for many many months but not consistent enough to control many aspects to win the games. We equalised the [Liverpool] game with a deflected cross from Rayan Cherki, and goes to the head of Erling and intelligent run from there. From a deflection.
“And we saved with an incredible save from Gigio from a deflection. That is football. And that intervenes. But when we are a champion team, even in deflections you control the other aspects that don’t make the deflections the key points to win the game. And still we are in that phase.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has barred Ukraine’s skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych from wearing a helmet that honors Ukrainian athletes killed in the war with Russia.
“The IOC fully understands the desire of athletes to remember friends who lost their lives in that conflict,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams told a news conference on Tuesday.
“He has done that in training and on social media he has expressed his feelings but what we have said is this helmet contravenes the … guidelines,” he added.
Ukraine’s Olympic Committee on Tuesday asked the IOC to allow Heraskevych to wear the “helmet of remembrance” at the Milano-Cortina Games.
The committee made the request after an IOC representative told Heraskevych he cannot use the helmet he has worn in training, which features images of athletes killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
The Ukrainian Olympic Committee insists the design contains no political slogans or discriminatory elements.
“The helmet was created to honor Ukrainian athletes killed while defending Ukraine or who became victims of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine,” Ukraine’s Olympic Committee said in a statement.
The IOC denied the request ahead of the skeleton competition, which starts Thursday.
However, the IOC announced that, as a compromise, Heraskevych will be permitted to wear a black armband when competing at the games.
“We feel this is a good compromise,” Adams said. He said the field of play needed to remain as neutral as possible.
“We need to keep that specific moment (on the field of play) as pure as we can for the competition. People can express themselves however they want to elsewhere,” he explained.
Heraskevych, who is generally considered a medal hopeful at the games, said he could not understand how the helmet “hurt anyone.”
It included photos of figure skater Dmytro Sharpar, boxer Pavlo Ishchenko, hockey player Oleksiy Loginov, and others, some of whom were killed on the front lines, Heraskevych said.
Before the IOC’s decision Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy voiced his support for Heraskevych on social media.
“This truth cannot be inconvenient, inappropriate, or called a “political demonstration at a sporting event.” It is a reminder to the entire world of what modern Russia is,” he wrote.
Athletes from Russia are not allowed to take part in the Olympic Games under a Russian flag, but 13 Russians are taking part in the Winter Olympics as “Individual Neutral Athletes.”
The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in February 2022, arguing that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched days after the Beijing Winter Games, violated the Olympic Truce.

NEW DELHI: Norway Chess has announced Alireza Firouzja as the latest player for its 2026 edition in Oslo, but India’s top-ranked player Arjun Erigaisi is still not part of the confirmed lineup. Firouzja, known for his aggressive and exciting style, said, “I’m looking forward to competing against the best chess players in the world at Norway Chess 2026 in Oslo.”
Firouzja is considered one of the brightest stars in modern chess. He became a grandmaster at just 14 and later made history by becoming the youngest player ever to reach a 2800 rating. He also crossed the 2700 rating mark at 16, showing how quickly he climbed to the elite level. He has played in the FIDE Candidates Tournament twice, first after winning the Grand Swiss in 2021 and later through the world rating list in 2024.He is no stranger to Norway Chess, having played there four times and finishing second in 2020 and 2021. Tournament organisers praised his return, with COO Benedicte Westre Skog saying, “Alireza Firouzja has been part of Norway Chess for several years and has consistently delivered performances at the very highest level. He brings intensity, ambition and world-class quality to the field. We’re very pleased to welcome him back to Oslo in 2026.”India will still be strongly represented at the event. World champion Gukesh Dommaraju and R Praggnanandhaa have already been confirmed, alongside Magnus Carlsen and Vincent Keymer. One more player will be revealed weekly, so there is still a chance for Arjun to make the cut.Gukesh, who became the youngest undisputed world champion after beating Ding Liren in 2024, said, “I am really happy to take part in Norway Chess again, fighting against a very strong field as always, and looking forward to all the exciting games.” He has also enjoyed success at Norway Chess before, including a memorable win over Carlsen in 2025.
Star all-rounder Glenn Phillips showcased his exceptional fielding skills once again during the T20 World Cup 2026 clash between New Zealand and the UAE. The game is being played on Tuesday, February 10, in Chennai.
UAE won the toss and opted to bat first. They put up a commendable effort against the Kiwis, posting a challenging total of 173/6 from their 20 overs. During the last ball of the 11th over, Glenn Phillips pulled off a jaw-dropping dive from nowhere to save a certain boundary.
Mitchell Santner bowled a short delivery as Muhammad Waseem shuffled across to pull the ball in front of square. It appeared as though he had found the gap, and the ball would race to the fence. However, Phillips covered unreal ground to reach deep square leg from the deep mid-wicket area. He not only covered ground but also put in a splendid dive, got up quickly, collected the ball and threw it back to the wicketkeeper.
Watch the video of the moment below –
Eventually, Muhammad Waseem just got two runs for his shot and was denied by the boundary by a magnificent effort in the field.
Glenn Phillips was not only electric on the field but also contributed with the ball in hand. The right-arm off-spinner picked up the wicket of Harshit Kaushik in the 16th over of UAE’s innings.
Although he was expensive, returning figures of 1/30 from two overs, he picked up a crucial wicket towards the backend of the innings.
As the Kiwis walk out to chase the total, Glenn Phillips will also have an important role to play with the bat. He is in top form coming into this game. In their previous contest against Afghanistan, he played a brilliant hand in helping them successfully chase down a target of 183 runs in just 17.5 overs with five wickets to spare.
The right-hander slammed a quickfire 42 off just 25 balls after New Zealand were in early trouble, having lost Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra with the score on 14/2. His impactful innings included seven boundaries and a six at a strike rate of 168.

There were no French medals on Monday, February 9 at the Winter Olympics. However, Valentin Foubert came close to achieving a remarkable feat in ski jumping. Meanwhile, French ice dancers Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry surged to a surprise lead in the figure skating competition.
NEW DELHI: The words still echo, carrying the weight of history, emotion and an era drawing to a close. Just two years back, when Virat Kohli uttered, “This was going to be my last T20 World Cup playing for India,” the cricketing world paused.
It was June 29, 2024, in Barbados — a night of jubilation for India and quiet heartbreak for millions who had grown up watching Kohli redefine batting in white-ball cricket.Quote of the day – “This was going to be my last T20 World Cup playing for India, it’s time for the next generation to take over.”India had just clinched their second T20 World Cup title with a dramatic seven-run win over South Africa, ending an 11-year ICC trophy drought. Kohli, named Player of the Match for his masterful 76 off 59 balls, chose that triumphant moment to announce his T20I retirement, which came out as a fitting farewell for one of the format’s modern greats. He bowed out with 4,188 runs in 125 matches at an astonishing average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04, second only to Rohit Sharma among India’s leading run-scorers.The final itself was a classic. After a quick fall of wickets, Kohli, who had been struggling from a poor run of form, stood tall and brought the team out of danger with the craft of his willow. India’s 176/7 was the highest first-innings total in a T20 World Cup final, but South Africa threatened to steal the show, needing just 30 off 30 with six wickets in hand. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya held their nerve under pressure, while Suryakumar Yadav’s stunning boundary catch to dismiss David Miller sealed a moment that will live forever in Indian cricket folklore.India’s campaign was dominant and unbeaten, marked by all-round excellence. Rohit’s leadership, Bumrah’s lethal bowling, Kuldeep Yadav’s spin control, and crucial contributions from Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav underlined the team’s depth. The triumph also marked a high point for coach Rahul Dravid, who signed off with a world title. Celebrations followed across the country, with the BCCI announcing a Rs 125 crore reward and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosting the champions.Yet, amid the celebrations, Kohli’s farewell line stood out. It was a reminder that while legends step aside, Indian cricket’s story continues with a new generation ready to rise.

“It was insane. Obviously I’m bummed I couldn’t land that last trick,” Brookes told BBC Sport.
“I had too much spin on it, which I didn’t think I would. Maybe I should have done an 1800 instead!”
“I’m hyped for it, everything good can come from it. I’m in a good headspace and ready to to do slopestyle.”

Mia Brookes went down fighting as she narrowly missed out on Great Britain’s first medal of the Milan and Cortina Winter Olympics in the women’s snowboard Big Air at Livigno Snow Park.
Starting her last of three runs in third place, Brookes went for broke and came agonisingly close to becoming the first female athlete to land a backside 1620 in competition.
But Brookes slightly over-rotated and was penalised for her landing, meaning she slipped a position behind winner Kokomo Murase of Japan, New Zealander Zio Sadowski Synnott and Seungeun Yu of South Korea.
It marked another near-miss on a day that had promised so much for Team GB, with Kirsty Muir earlier also taking fourth place in the women’s ski slopestyle final.

Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat were the favourites to win the gold medal in the mixed doubles curling but a poor performance in the semi-final against Sweden means they risk going medalless in the event.
“Obviously, it’s not the result we were after,” Dodds said on Monday after the loss
“I think we’re both just disappointed we didn’t play like we have all week.
“In an Olympic semi-final you can’t do that and the Swedes capitalised on our mistakes. We were punished for it tonight.”
The duo are back in action this afternoon and face Italy in the bronze medal match.
Mike Jones10 February 2026 10:30
Few sports put you through the wringer quite like curling and, after this semi-final defeat, it will take some time for Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds to straighten out.
The Scottish pair won eight of nine in the round robin, secured the top seed for the semi-finals and were favourites for the gold medal.
But the velvety touch that carried them this far deserted them at the worst possible moment and they collapsed to a 9–3 defeat to Sweden. Sport, eh.

Lindsey Vonn’s crash called into question the decision to let her compete knowing she was injured before her run.
International Ski Federation President Johan Eliasch said the competitor had to make up their own mind when carrying pre-existing injuries.
“I firmly believe that this has to be decided by the individual … And in her case, she certainly knows her injuries a lot better than anybody else,” he told reporters on Monday.
“And what is also important for people to understand that the accident that she had yesterday, she was incredibly unlucky. It was a one in a thousand.
“She got too close to the gate, and she got stuck when she was in the air in the gate and started rotating.”
Mike Jones10 February 2026 10:10
The helmet, which depicts several athletes who died in the conflict – some of whom were personal friends of Heraskevych – is now expected to be shelved.

A source close to the matter confirmed on Monday that a joint team of local orthopaedic and plastic surgeons performed the procedures.
These operations were crucial for stabilising her and preventing complications related to swelling and blood flow.
While Vonn’s personal doctor was reportedly present and assisted, Italian surgeons led the medical interventions.

Still no joy as of yet for Team GB but with a bronze medal chance in the curling this afternoon their medal tally could begin today.
