Former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah given six-month driving ban

Published

on

Former Liverpool footballer Mohamed Salah has been banned from driving for six months after his Rolls-Royce was clocked speeding.

Salah failed to tell police who was at the wheel when the car was caught by a speed camera driving at 36mph (58 km/h) on a 30mph (48km/h) stretch of road in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on 27 March, according to court documents.

The 34-year-old did not respond to the notice of the prosecution, brought by Cheshire Police, and did not enter a plea to the charge.

He was handed a six-month driving ban and ordered to pay £1,044 in a hearing at Warrington Combined Court.

A court spokeswoman said Salah was prosecuted under the Single Justice Procedure, which sees magistrates sit in private hearings, and was convicted of failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver of the Rolls-Royce.

The speeding offence came days after the Egypt captain announced he would be leaving Liverpool following nine years with the team.

Announcing his departure on 24 March, the club said he had “firmly established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history”.

He scored 257 goals in 442 appearances for Liverpool, before transferring to Turkish side Trabzonspor following the 2025-26 season.

Man City get emphatic Elliot Anderson handball verdict amid Sunderland and Arsenal frustration

Manchester City avoided conceding a penalty during the thrilling 5-3 victory over Sunderland in the Premier League

Manchester City have been reassured that referee Robert Jones and VAR Michael Salisbury were right not to award Sunderland a penalty during their 5-3 victory on Sunday. The Black Cats were left frustrated in the second half when the ball hit Elliot Anderson’s hand in the penalty area as the midfielder tussled for possession with Enzo Le Fee.

In his post-match press conference, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris was adamant that a penalty should have been awarded. “It was hard to see that as not a handball. It is what it is and we have to accept the decision. It’s hard to comment,” the manager said.

Reviewing the incident on the latest episode of Ref Watch, former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher insisted the officials got the decision correct. “I didn’t think it was a penalty when I saw it yesterday, and I don’t think it is a penalty now,” Gallagher said.

“I think there’s a lot of interesting things in it. If you look, first of all, when it comes in, the first offence there, the handball, is by the Sunderland player. As it runs on, it strikes Elliot Anderson on the left arm. Watch this. Comes off the Sunderland player, onto the left arm, ricochets onto his right arm. He turns, it hits his hand. His right arm is the one that slaps it away.

“That’s what people haven’t seen. This will show you there. Contact here is on his left arm. Goes up onto his right hand. He’s turning his body.

“He’s got no chance of moving. His arms are already there. He hasn’t moved his arm. It’s turning into the ball. It strikes him, there’s no doubt about that. But I still think, if that’s given as a penalty, it will be overturned, because they will say, It’s just not a deliberate handball. It’s just a consequence.”

Gallagher was then asked if the penalty had been awarded on field, if it would have been allowed to stand or overturned as an error by Jones. “Well, it wasn’t an error because the referee didn’t give it,” Gallagher added.

“I think the VAR would clearly say, no, it’s not, because it’s come off the Sunderland man onto his left arm there. It’s cannoned onto his right hand as he’s turning. It’s not going to be given as a penalty.”

Ugochukwu finished second in the season-ending race, which was enough to secure the title ahead of Freddie Slater. Tuukka Taponen won the race, while Ugochukwu’s consistent results across the season helped him finish 14 points clear in the championship.

Speaking on the pressure of the final weekend, he said: “Today I knew what I had to do to win the championship. So, it was in my hands to keep it clean, keep the cars behind at bay, and just bring it home to the line.”

The 19-year-old described his title battle with Slater as a strong contest throughout the year.

“For sure this is a great step for my career, really important, and it’s a good step for what’s to come,” he added.

The Formula 3 title is Ugochukwu’s second championship of 2026, following his Formula Regional Oceania title earlier in the year. He said Formula 2 is the next logical step towards his dream of reaching Formula 1, but for now, he is enjoying the achievement.
