As we get older, muscle loss can occur because of low t-levels or just lack of activity. That is why it is important we are working our muscles to maintain muscle mass and build even more muscle. You also want to make sure that you are eating enough protein to help build the muscles that you are breaking down in your workouts. Today, we are going to be focused on the workout! I am going to give you 6 different exercises to help you build muscle after 50. These are compound movements that will hit multiple different muscle groups. You can do them at home or in the gym. Let’s get started with these exercises to help you build muscle after 50.

Exercise #1: GOBLET SQUAT. Have your feet about shoulder width apart, and have the dumbbell close to your chest for the entire movement in this exercise. Keep looking forward to avoid leaning forward and curving your back. The first movement in this exercise is to hinge at the hips and stick your butt out. Go as deep as you are able with these squats.

Exercise #2: INCLINE DUMBBELL CHEST PRESS. If you don’t have a bench you can do this on the floor. You can put a cushion under your back to help give you more range of motion, to get a deeper stretch in your back. Do a slight incline with this exercise, 30 degrees is a good incline. This will help place a little more emphasis on your upper chest. You do not need to flare your elbows out to the side.

Exercise #3: STIFF-LEGGED DEADLIFT OR ROMANIAN DEADLIFT. We are focusing on our hamstrings and glutes for this exercise, so using proper form is critical for this exercise. You do NOT want to squat down in this exercise. You can have a slight bend in your knees, but you are just riding the dumbbells down your legs. Initiate the movement by hinging at the hips and sticking your butt out.

Exercise #4: DB OVERHEAD SHOULDER PRESS. You can do this exercise seated or standing. Just push the dumbbell straight up over your head. If you have bad shoulders, there is an alternative you can do. You can do LATERAL DUMBBELL RAISES instead, if the pushing movement hurts your shoulders. Keep a slight bend in your elbows, and don’t go higher than your shoulders.

Exercise #5: BANDED LAT PULLDOWN. Sit on the ground away from the anchor point to load the bands with resistance. You are going to initiate the movement with your elbows, and focus on driving your elbows behind your back. Squeeze your lats together for a couple seconds during the contraction.

Exercise #6: TRICEP PUSHDOWNS. This is a great exercise to get a huge pump in your triceps. Use a slow and controlled movement to avoid using momentum, and keep your elbows tucked in close to your sides. Push straight down, and hold the contraction for a couple of seconds.

  2. 66 years old and have just started working out with resistant bands and a few dumbbells. Have knee issues so squats and leg work seem to be difficult to maintain but upper body is ok for now. Diet is key also so 1 gram per Lb of desired boy weight so for me 215 grams per day

  11. By the looks of that full bar set up in the background I’m gonna say getting fit doesn’t mean alcohol consumption is off the books.

  12. Excellent video as always. After a dumbbells session I enjoy the stretch of a chest expander, which is a good and strong one, and I can really feel my muscles working when I use it in the normal style and above my head. Would you say a chest expander is beneficial? It definitely feels like it is.

  13. Former president Bush is in excellent shape!!!!

    ..time is running out.

  20. Many thanks for the helpful content. But how does one determine the size of dumbbell to use?

  21. I just found this site recently and so far I'm really liking it. I've been doing the workouts especially Mark Mcilyar's videso. I'm 66 and I've been working out consistently since I was 15 or 16. I also eat a very healthy diet and juice regularly. I refuse to become one of the 99% majority of people my age that have become old, brittle and sedentary. I feel strong, vital and fit and I've never been on any medication. I've been a member of many gyms over the years and I always loved the whole gym experience. However, for the last 12 or so years I've been working out exclusively at home. I use a combination of body weight, kettle bells, dumbells and some stretching and yoga. I do have a shoulder issue and a knee issue due to 28+ years of martial art training. I try to follow the marine motto of adapt, improvise and overcome. I'm getting a lot of great information and motivation from these videos and I have to thank Mark ond all the others involved for creating and sharing these great videos. I've got to admit that it makes me feel good to be able to do things that guys in their 30's and 40's can't do. Getting older doesn't have to mean we have to become old men. I plan on working out until it's time for me to say bye bye. Keep em coming!

  22. Great tips but that body is not natural. Don´t expect to get that body by training hard and good diet.

  23. enough talk shthead

  24. u r so so so good eith ur technique, persuasion… motivation.. fantastic… cheers vernon_alvares Mumbai

  25. Great video you get a c-rating since you are wearing a tank top if your shirt was off you would get an A+ rating so please take your shirt off before going on camera ok. You mentioned if your wearing a sleeveless shirt it will make your arms look bigger but they would look better with your shirt off.

  26. Just started working out again at 50. Haven't worked out in about 12 years. Tonight was my 2nd day and I did some light legs yesterday went in Tonight and did some light upper body. Doing light just to break back In and get over the sore part. I'm watching alot of 50 plus videos on here to learn the difference of now and my 30s. I must admit my biggest worry about the gym is the whole tik tok crap with these women accusing men of perving. I almost didn't go inside Tonight bc when I got there the only other people there was two women. I even called my wife and told her I was thinking about leaving. She told me just go in there get your light workout over and don't even acknowledge them. So I did. When I went in one of rhe ladies I guess had gone into the tanning bed by time I went inside. After I went in the other lady finished the leg machine she was on then went In back and didn't come out till both her and the other lady was leaving. It made me uncomfortable and I'm not use to that bc the gym atmosphere wasn't that toxic 12 years ago. It's a real shame things have come to that and you have to feel uncomfortable like that bc you feel like you just being there is making you into some kinda perv when all u want is to be left alone and work out. I'm not going to quit over it just don't like the atmosphere in the gym now days.

  27. As a pitcher once said in baseball when asked why does he not throw harder? He said .. I throw as hard as I ever did but the ball doesn't go as fast
