Never be the last on board. It’s almost guaranteed the overhead storage will be full. That’s why I travel light or at least buy a ticket that guarantees I get space.

I remember flying Tower Air back in the 90's. The entire fleet was made up of used 747s. You could upgrade from economy to 1st class for $100 at the airport before boarding if seats were available. It was awesome flying on the upper deck of the 747.
