Indian-origin Bodhana Sivanandan becomes England’s top female chess player | World News

Published

on

Indian-origin chess prodigy Bodhana Sivanandan has become England’s top-rated female player, according to the latest rating list of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The 11-year-old, whose parents moved from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu to England in 2007, has 2366 FIDE rating points.

The primary school student based in North London has overtaken four-time British women’s champion, Lan Yao, who is 25, at the top of the FIDE list for England.

With this, she has also broken into the world’s top 100 women for the first time, currently sitting at number 72, stated the English Chess Federation in a press release.

“It is an extraordinary rise for a Harrow schoolgirl who took up the game during (the 2020 COVID-19) lockdown after finding a chessboard and set in a bag her father wanted to throw out,” the release added.

Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is also of Indian origin, congratulated Sivanandan and recalled the time he played a game with her at his official residence.

“Huge congratulations to Bodhana Sivanandan on becoming England’s top female chess player at just 11 years old. We once played each other in the Downing Street garden. Let’s just say her success has not come as a shock,” he posted on ‘X’.

Sivanandan became a Woman International Master last year.

She went on to outwit Ukraine’s former world champion, Grandmaster Mariya Muzychuk, at the European Club Cup in Rhodes, Greece.

“She is blazing a trail not just for women and girls in the game, but for all chess players in England. Across all sports, she must be one of the most prodigious talents England has ever produced,” Richard Walsh, CEO of the English Chess Federation, said.

“We cannot wait to see what she can do in her career. Bodhana has worked so hard, her family have worked so hard, and now she is competing at the highest level flying the flag,” he added.

Everton boss David Moyes gives update on Jack Grealish’s future amid injury recovery

Published

on

David Moyes has affirmed Everton’s commitment to winger Jack Grealish, stating the club “will continue doing our best” for him as he rehabilitates from a broken bone in his foot.

Grealish, who has been sidelined since mid-January, is unusually continuing his treatment with the Toffees rather than returning to parent club Manchester City, a common practice for long-term loan injuries.

The 30-year-old has one year remaining on his contract, with Moyes indicating that future plans would be assessed in the summer.

“We’ve got a few plans in place. Finances will obviously play a big part in it so we will need to navigate round the best we can,” Moyes said.

“Obviously we like Jack a lot. We’ve looked after Jack all the time since his injury. It’s looking in good order now, the surgeon speaks very well about it and thinks it’s healing greatly.”

Moyes acknowledged the deviation from standard procedure, adding: “Normally a player would go back to his parent club and be looked after from there, but we will continue doing our best for Jack.

“He is incredibly well liked inside and outside the building but ultimately he is not our player, he is Man City’s player. We’ve had him on loan for a year and I have to say we’ve enjoyed having him.”

Grealish previously spent four years at City after signing for the club for £100 million from Aston Villa in 2021.

The English winger played a key role in City’s 2022-23 campaign when Pep Guardiola’s men won a historic treble.

However, he struggled to find consistent form, leading to him being loaned out to Everton last summer.

Grealish started the season strongly at Hill Dickinson Stadium, swiftly winning the fans over, but his campaign was brought to a premature end when he got injured in January.

The injury ended his hopes of making Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, which was announced on Friday morning.

The German boss named Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford as his left wingers, with Eberechi Eze also providing cover in this position.

In other news, Moyes also revealed that the club is “very close” to finalising a contract extension for left-back Vitalii Mykolenko.

Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of completing their first signing of the summer transfer window

Manchester United are reportedly close to completing the signing of Atalanta star Ederson, which could be the first deal with Michael Carrick as the club’s permanent manager. United confirmed that Carrick would remain as the club’s head coach on a long-term basis on Friday, having successfully guided the Reds to Champions League qualification.

Carrick has signed a two-year contract to be United’s permanent boss, and will take charge of the club’s final match of the season away at Brighton on Sunday.

Ederson has been heavily linked with a move to United for several transfer windows and now reports are suggesting that the Brazilian is on the verge of becoming a member of Carrick’s squad.

According to SportItalia journalist Michele Criscitiello, a deal for United to sign Ederson from Atalanta is ‘almost closed’

The report claims that the fee for the deal will be €50million (£43million), with the move on the verge of being completed, although it’s not been stated how long a contract Ederson would sign after becoming a United player.

Ederson has made 41 appearances for Atalanta this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists and helping the club occupy seventh place in the Serie A table with one match left to play.

It remains to be seen which other players could go on to sign for United, with the club now having more clarity on the future after Carrick was confirmed as the club’s new manager.

Gervonta Davis targeted comeback fight reportedly now off as opponent looks elsewhere

Published

on

Gervonta Davis could be forced to adjust his comeback strategy, with his targeted opponent reportedly ruling himself out of their mooted showdown.

The 31-year-old has not fought since March 2025, back when he retained his WBA world lightweight title with a controversial draw against Lamont Roach.

Many felt Roach was unfortunate not to emerge victorious, especially after flooring ‘Tank’ in round nine before referee Steve Willis ruled the incident a no-knockdown.

Following talks of an immediate rematch, Davis was then set to face Jake Paul in an exhibition match last November, only for allegations of domestic violence to remove him from the opportunity.

Since then, the American has been made WBA ‘champion in recess’, yet it remains unclear whether he will look to reclaim his old lightweight belt.

Instead, it appeared far more likely that he would return against Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, whom he unanimously outpointed back in 2021.

This time, it was reported that the pair would meet later this year at 140lbs towards the end of the summer, only now it seems that ‘Pitbull’ is exploring alternative options.

Taking to social media, boxing journalist Abraham Gonzalez said Cruz has joined forces with Canelo Alvarez trainer Eddy Reynoso, with whom he is expected to face a different opponent than Davis.

Gonzalez said that Cruz may look to reignite the rivalry after getting one fight with Reynoso in his corner under his belt. Whether ‘Tank’ waits around remains to be seen, but there are several other options available.

As the leading contender for his old WBA title at 135lbs, Floyd Schofield has urged ‘Tank’ to fight him instead of Vasyl Lomachenko.

With Lomachenko expected to make a comeback later this year, though, it is likely that Davis would view the Ukrainian as a more lucrative option, and perhaps look to restart the talks they were engaged in before ‘Loma’s retirement.

Manchester United hands Michael Carrick two-year contract as head coach

Published

on

MANCHESTER, England — Michael Carrick has been handed a two-year contract by Manchester United after passing his audition for the job of head coach with flying colors.

United confirmed on Friday that Carrick — who replaced the fired Ruben Amorim on a temporary basis in January — would become its seventh permanent manager since the retirement of club icon Alex Ferguson in 2013.

“Throughout the past five months we’ve shown what our club represents — resilience togetherness and a determination to succeed. Now it’s about moving forward again with ambition and purpose,” Carrick said. “This club and our supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honors and we’re never going to stop.”

Carrick has transformed United’s fortunes, securing qualification for the Champions League and standout wins against Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

His record in his short spell stands at 11 wins in 16 games, with only two losses, and he has steered the team to third in the Premier League after it finished 15th last term — a record low in the modern era.

While there is still uncertainty as to whether he can be the long-term solution for United after more than a decade of decline post-Ferguson, his impact made it nearly impossible for the club’s hierarchy to overlook him.

“Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team. In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history,” said United director of football Jason Wilcox, who led the search for the club’s next coach.

As a multiple titlewinner with United as a player, Carrick had the support of fans and club icons, who called for him to be given the job on a permanent basis. He also inspired an upturn of form in key players like Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko.

Yet he is a novice coach at the top level. His only previous full-time managerial experience was at second-tier Middlesbrough from 2022-25.

United has been convinced he is up to the job long term, having given itself time to assess other candidates since he was appointed in January. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner were among potential contenders to take up a role that proved too much for a succession of managers.

“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated,” said Wilcox. “He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build.”

Wilcox has put his faith in Carrick after his predecessor Amorim lasted just 14 months, despite arriving with a reputation as one of the top emerging coaches in Europe.

Carrick is the latest to be charged with the responsibility of bringing the good times back to United in the post-Ferguson era after David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and Amorim.

He was part of one of Ferguson’s greatest teams, which won a Premier League and Champions League double in 2008. In all he won 12 major trophies in 12 years at United including five league titles.

He was in United’s last title-winning team in Ferguson’s final season.

The list of predecessors to Carrick is evidence of the varying attempts United has made to try to return to the summit of English soccer.

It went down the route of the top tier, tried and tested in the form of serial winners Van Gaal and Mourinho, but neither could deliver the Premier League title.

David Moyes was a well-established top-flight manager, while both Ten Hag and Amorim came in as title winners from overseas.

None have reached the standards required.

Solskjaer was an iconic player — part of the club’s DNA — and despite having the affection of the fans ultimately came up short.

“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride,” Carrick said.

St. George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

St George Illawarra will be desperate to finally break through for its first win of the season when it hosts an in-form New Zealand Warriors outfit at Jubilee Stadium on Saturday. The Dragons’ difficult campaign continued in Magic Round with a heavy loss to Penrith, extending their losing streak to 14 matches as pressure continues to build around the club. Injuries have not helped, with Moses Suli sidelined again, although Jaydn Su’A returns from suspension and adds some much-needed experience to the backline. In stark contrast, the Warriors arrive full of confidence after dismantling Brisbane for a fifth consecutive victory to cement their place near the top of the ladder. However, the win came with a major setback after halfback Tanah Boyd suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Even with several Origin absentees, New Zealand still boasts impressive depth and has dominated this matchup recently, winning four of the past five meetings against the Dragons.

MANILA, Philippines—Barangay Ginebra weathered a late storm from Rain or Shine to pull out a 109-101 victory in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals at Mall of Asia Arena on Friday.

After absorbing a heartbreaking 115-111 loss in Game 1, the Gin Kings bounced back to even the best-of-seven series at 1-1.

“They played their style again, they kept the pace up,” coach Tim Cone said.

“It came down in the fourth and gave themselves a chance to win, we played right into it and it’s hard not to because they come at you in a lot of ways… It’s very difficult because we overplayed Justin (Brownlee), Troy (Rosario) and Scottie (Thompson) so from a coaching standpoint, I expected them to do that.”

Japeth Aguilar scored inside midway through the fourth quarter to give Ginebra what seemed to be a comfortable 98-78 lead.

Troy Rosario, however, got free underneath for the dagger basket that gave the Gin Kings a decisive 105-99 cushion with 23 seconds to go en route to the win.

Pep Guardiola to Leave Manchester City After Final Game of the Season

Published

on

Manchester City have confirmed that manager Pep Guardiola will leave the club after Sunday’s final match of the season.

Guardiola has enjoyed a hugely successful spell at City, winning 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles in 10 seasons in charge of the club.

The 55-year-old will take charge of his final game when City face Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Reports from BBC Sport on Monday said the club had already started making plans for Guardiola’s departure, even though he still had one year left on his contract.

“Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving,” said Guardiola. “There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time.

“Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.”

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked under Guardiola at City, is believed to be the leading candidate to replace him.

The announcement came only three days after City lost the 2025/26 Premier League title to Arsenal.

City’s draw against AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday confirmed Arsenal as league champions for the first time in 22 years.

Guardiola first agreed to join City in February 2016, replacing Manuel Pellegrini ahead of the 2016/17 season.

Although he failed to win a trophy in his first season and also ended last season empty-handed, his side dominated English football for most of his time at the club.

City became the first Premier League team to reach 100 points in a season during the 2017/18 campaign. They also scored a record 106 goals that season.

In the 2022/23 season, Guardiola guided City to a historic Treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in the same campaign. They became only the second English club after Manchester United to achieve the feat.

City also made history by becoming the first team to win four straight English league titles after lifting the trophy again in the 2023/24 season.

Despite stepping down as manager, City said Guardiola would remain connected to the club as a global ambassador for the City Football Group.

Before joining City, Guardiola spent three years at Bayern Munich, where he won three Bundesliga titles and two German Cups.

He began his coaching career at FC Barcelona in 2008, building one of the greatest club teams in football history. During his time there, he won three La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies and two Copa del Rey titles.

As a player, Guardiola also enjoyed a successful career at Barcelona, winning six La Liga titles and the 1991/92 European Cup. He also captained Spain national football team to Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Games before retiring from football in 2006.

Indian legend launches sharp criticism at Sai Sudharsan despite holding Orange Cap in IPL 2026

Published

on

Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin feels Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Sai Sudharsan should learn to accelerate towards the back end of the innings. He opined that the southpaw needed to improve to match the demands of modern-day T20 cricket.

Sudharsan has shown terrific form in IPL 2026 and is currently the Orange Cap holder. The opening batter has amassed 638 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 157.92. Speaking about the 24-year-old’s batting style, Ashwin remarked in his YouTube video:

“I want to praise Shubman Gill’s batting. He has put in a lot of effort and has shown great intent in the powerplay. I wouldn’t say the same thing about Sai Sudharsan. Sai Sudharsan plays conventional cricket, but capitalizes later on. I still think Sai Sudharsan needs to accelerate towards the end of the innings. T20 cricket has changed. He can do a lot more.”

Sudharsan shone with the bat in GT’s 89-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad on Thursday, May 21. He played a brilliant 84-run knock off 53 balls. Ashwin noted that the talented batter hit a four over mid-off after stepping out of the crease against Anshul Kamboj.

The former cricketer praised Sudharsan’s ability to upset the rhythm of the bowlers. He stated:

“He is not one of your modern-day T20 batters, but the way he used his feet today was good to see. He stepped out and hit Anshul Kamboj’s first ball over mid-off in the powerplay. He doesn’t hit straight that often, but today, he played his first lofted shot there.

“It would have been a catch had the mid-off been straighter, but we should praise him because this guy does something or the other to upset the rhythm of the bowlers. He doesn’t have power; he is not a powerful T20 hitter, he bats conventionally, but by using his brain, by running two, or by playing good shots, he upsets the bowler.”

With the comprehensive win over CSK, the Shubman Gill-led GT have secured a top-two finish in IPL 2026.

“He has not unlocked his full potential yet” – R Ashwin on Shubman Gill’s batting exploits in IPL 2026

R Ashwin lauded GT skipper Shubman Gill for changing his powerplay approach. He pointed out that the right-handed batter has played attacking cricket right from the outset.

However, Ashwin suggested that Gill has yet to unlock his full potential as a batter. He said in the same video:

“There is a huge difference in his powerplay intent. The volume of runs has always been there and is in the Orange Cap list, but he’s shown us that he can play with intent. I am still saying that it is 60-70 percent maximum. He has not unlocked his full potential yet. He is a special batter and can do more.”

Gill is the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2026. He has scored 616 runs from 13 innings with a strike rate of 161.67.
