Jenny Simpson: Olympic medallist stops running after diagnosis with rare heart condition

Olympic medallist Jenny Simpson says a “chapter has ended” and she will not return to running after having a cardiac arrest.

The 39-year-old American, a former 1500m world champion, was pacing a mile group at a pop-up event in North Carolina in June when she collapsed.

She required CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator before being transported to UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, where she went into cardiac arrest again.

“My heart was severely injured and stunned. My lungs struggled too,” Simpson said in an Instagram post, external on Thursday.

“I was diagnosed with a rare inherited heart condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC).”

ARVC is a genetic condition in which the proteins that normally hold heart muscle cells together do not work properly.

This can cause heart muscle cells to die and be replaced by fatty tissue and scar tissue.

It causes the walls of the heart chambers to become thin and stretched, and the heart cannot pump blood around the body properly.

“My future is an incredible gift. It’s hopeful, and it will continue to have great purpose,” Simpson said.

“But my diagnosis also means it would be dangerous for me to return to running. That chapter has ended. Thankfully, my story hasn’t.”

Simpson won 1500m gold at the 2011 World Championships and bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, and retired from competitive racing at the end of the 2024 season.

“I’m profoundly grateful that I got to have the career I did,” added Simpson, who also won silver medals in the 1500m at the 2013 and 2017 World Championships.

“I experienced everything – from the trenches of training to standing on the top of the podium while our national anthem filled the stadium.”

Team India skipper Shubman Gill showed positive intent in the nets ahead of the side’s second and final Test of the Sri Lanka tour. The right-handed batter hit some huge sixes while practicing big shots against spinners Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, and Saransh Jain.

The 26-year-old failed to make an impact with the bat in the Test series opener. He registered scores of 16 and 8, with both dismissals coming against left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya.

According to The Times of India, Gill played attacking shots off spin bowling in the nets. Watch the clip here:

India completed a clinical victory despite Gill’s twin failures. The visitors took a 1-0 lead with their 165-run win. Devdutt Padikkal was declared the Player of the Match for his scores of 167 and 44. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar starred with the ball, claiming his maiden 10-wicket haul in Tests.

“It was a difficult Test match from that perspective” – Mohammad Kaif praises Shubman Gill’s captaincy in Galle

While Shubman Gill was dismissed cheaply in the Test series opener, he earned big praise for his leadership. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif lauded Gill’s captaincy and tactical calls.

The cricketer-turned-commentator remarked that Gill was spot on with his calculations in the rain-hit contest. Kaif said on the Sony Sports Network:

“It’s not easy as a captain. Of course, India have rarely lost in Sri Lanka. India are the stronger team and should have won, and that’s what happened, but since the game was stopped due to rain, it was a difficult job for Gill as captain. He had to set up the game. The ball was in Gill’s and Gautam Gambhir’s court.

“You had to tell when you would declare and how many overs would be required. All that calculation had to be done. It was a difficult Test match from that perspective. So I will give Gill the numbers as a captain for doing a good job,” he added.

The action now moves to Colombo, where India and Sri Lanka will lock horns at Sinhalese Sports Club from Sunday, August 23.
