Despite injury problems, England head to Bristol fresh from a 12-try demolition of Scotland, while Wales are still searching for their first win in the championship since the last round of 2024.

“I’m very excited to be going up against a good England side,” said Lynn, who led Gloucester-Hartputy to three Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) titles.

“They’ve got a lot of injuries, but you can just see the depth they’ve got, and to be putting 84 points on a very good Scotland side just shows where England are.

“It will be a really good measure for us from our performances against Scotland and France, and what I want from our group of players is everything we are learning, we’re putting right against the best in the world.

“And then we can grow again, have a break and build on the next two weeks going into Ireland and Italy.”

Joe Calzaghe believes there is a clear number one choice for the best opponent he ever shared the ring with.

Calzaghe holds the distinct honour of being one of the few boxers to retire with an undefeated record, winning all 46 of his professional contests as he became unified super-middleweight champion before stepping up to 175lbs for his final two fights.

During his professional career which spanned from 1993 to 2008, Calzaghe claimed wins over the likes of Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins, Mikkel Kessler and Chris Eubank, and it is one of those big names that the Welshman believes was his toughest rival.

Speaking to The Ring, Calzaghe revealed that Kessler was his best competitor.

“Mikkel Kessler. I would say that, when I beat him, he was at his peak, 39-0. I think I was a bit older than him.

“It was my last fight at super middleweight. Massive pressure at the Millennium Stadium, 50,000, he held three belts.

“The Mikkel Kessler I beat was the best Mikkel Kessler. Kessler just edges it between him and Bernard Hopkins.”

Calzaghe met Kessler in November 2007, earning a unanimous decision victory in Cardiff to retain his WBO super-middleweight title and add the WBA and WBC belts to his collection.

While Calzaghe would compete just two further times following this bout, Kessler would go on to fight for another six years, where he would secure world honours at 168lbs on several further occasions, whilst going up against other elite fighters such as Andre Ward and Carl Froch.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel is speaking out as a wide-ranging review of the football program unfolds after Sherrone Moore’s dismissal.

Last year, an investigation determined Moore was involved in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” 

It was later revealed Moore’s former assistant was part of the relationship. The fallout from the scandal left Michigan’s top athletics official feeling “betrayed.”

“I felt betrayed. It’s the best word that I can use,” Manuel told The Detroit News.

Manuel said the situation struck a personal chord and had broader consequences for those around the program.

“It was personal, but it was also, I want to emphasize, for so many people that were affected by it. … There are a lot of people who claim to be callous, who say, ‘Oh, you should have fired him when the rumor was there.’ But you can’t just fire people on rumors with no evidence. So, when the evidence was presented, it was a sense of betrayal and hurt for everybody who was going to be involved with a decision.”

Manuel seemed to dodge questions about who initiated the investigation, whether it was his decision or that of the Board of Regents. He also pushed back on how it has been portrayed, defending the program’s broader culture.

“I was fine if that was the direction that they wanted to go,” Manuel said. “What I haven’t appreciated … is in the context of an investigation into the culture here. However people want to couch it, what I want is people to understand that 99.9% of the people here are doing things the right way. … We’ve had our issues, and we’re not perfect, and I don’t know any organization that’s without issues and people issues.”

Manuel pushed back on the idea that he is under investigation amid speculation about his own role.

“That’s not how I see it, no. Listen, it’s easy for people to say, ‘Well, Warde’s the leader, and, therefore, this is not just a review, this is an investigation of what the leader has done. That’s not, to me, what I’m going to be taking away from this. … And I’m not claiming that I can’t be better. … We’ve had our issues, and we deal with them. And we try to improve every time.”

Manuel declined to weigh in on Sherrone Moore’s sentencing, instead voicing support and expressing hope that everyone can move forward.

“I want Sherrone to get through this and to move forward for him and his family, and so I don’t have a reaction to the sentencing itself, more of a reaction to him as a person. … I want him and everyone who’s affected to be able to get through it, to move forward and to learn from it and to be better. That’s the way I think about it. I don’t judge any of the outcomes or the things that he’s going through.”

Moore faced up to five years in prison on home invasion and stalking charges after his dismissal from Michigan. He avoided prison after pleading guilty to lesser charges and was ordered to have no contact with his former assistant.

Kyle Whittingham left Utah to replace Moore as Michigan’s head coach.

Chelsea sacked manager Liam Rosenior on Wednesday following a catastrophic run of form that has left the London club’s Champions League hopes hanging by a thread while they also endured their worst goalscoring drought in over a century.

Rosenior lasted ⁠less than four months in the role after his January appointment following Enzo Maresca’s departure, becoming the latest casualty of Chelsea’s turbulent season after seven defeats in their last eight matches across all competitions.

Rosenior’s dismissal came a day after a humiliating 3-0 loss at Brighton & Hove Albion, which saw the south-coast club leapfrog Chelsea into sixth place in the table. Chelsea are now seven ⁠points behind fifth-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Here are five potential candidates to replace him – and one who surely won’t.

Felipe Luis

Felipe Luis was sacked by Flamengo last month, despite winning several trophies during his 100-game stint in charge of the Brazilian club. The former Chelsea defender would be a gamble, however, given his lack of experience coaching in European football.

Andoni Iraola

The Bournemouth manager, who will leave the south coast club this summer, has proven he can earn results in the Premier League while playing an attractive brand of football. He has also done it while improving young players and increasing their value, something that is clearly part of the current Chelsea project. But Iraola is reported to be considering a move back to his home club, Athletic Bilbao, for family reasons as much as football ones.

Cesc Fabregas

Like Felipe Luis, Fabregas would be something of a gamble given his lack of experience, having managed only one club, the Italian side Como. But Fabregas has worked wonders with the Serie A minnows and has them on the brink of European football next season. The 38-year-old is widely considered one of the brightest young coaches in the game.

Marco Silva

The Fulham manager has regularly been tipped to move on from Craven Cottage during his impressive five-year spell. He has a notable track record, winning trophies in Portugal and Greece in years gone by, and may feel he is ready for a new challenge at a Champions League club when his contract expires this summer.

Xabi Alonso

The former Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager is still out of work after his time at the Santiago Bernabeu was cut short earlier this season. He may be holding out for the Liverpool job, giving his links to Anfield, but Alonso will no doubt be considered by the Chelsea hierarchy and remains one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe.

Frank Lampard

Lampard would be a popular pick among fans at a time when the club is drifting and supporter sentiment is at a deep low. But surely the Coventry manager will not be tempted by a risky jump to Stamford Bridge – again – having just steered his team to the Championship title and a return to the premier League after 25 years away.

Chelsea’s next manager latest odds

Former cruiserweight and heavyweight world champion David Haye has revealed which man hit him hardest during his 32-fight professional career.

Haye established himself as one of the biggest punchers in the cruiserweight division during the 2000s, with his first 16 victories all coming inside of the distance, as the Bermondsey-born operator announced himself on the big stage.

In 2007, Haye knocked out Jean Marc Mormeck to get his hands on the unified WBA and WBC cruiserweight world titles, with his only defence of those belts coming in a title unification against WBO champion Enzo Maccarinelli, before moving up to heavyweight.

The Brit needed just one fight before challenging Russian giant Nikolai Valuev for the WBA heavyweight world title and claiming a majority-decision win. He defended that belt twice, then suffered a second career defeat, losing a wide decision to the legendary Wladimir Klitschko.

Speaking to Jack Figg, Haye admitted that the imposing Valuev was the biggest puncher he ever faced.

“Valuev [was the hardest puncher that I faced]. The few shots that I did take from Valuev, it was noticeably different. Because he was so big, seven-foot [and] 150 kilos, he didn’t have to load up with punches. He is just naturally bigger so he kind of just flicks his arm out.

“I noticed that very quick, he wasn’t as slow as I hoped he would be. So, I had to really, really stay switched on to not feel that power.”

Haye retired with a record of 28-4 after consecutive defeats to Tony Bellew, with injuries hampering him in both of those losses.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has been sent a clear response to his Declan Rice admission by Roy Keane and Gary Neville

Gary Neville and Roy Keane have both stated that Pep Guardiola was wrong in his assessment of Declan Rice. He was captured by Sky Sports cameras saying “it’s not done” after Manchester City beat Arsenal in a huge Premier League title clash last Sunday, with City’s win against Burnley on Wednesday sending them top of the table.

Ahead of that game, Guardiola was asked about the Rice clip and the City boss admitted he loved it as it showed Arsenal’s strong mentality and why they are in the title race. Neville and Keane, however, interpreted it quite differently.

The former stated on the latest episode of Stick to Football: “Pep said he loved the Declan Rice clip saying ‘it’s not done’, do you think Declan was in control when he was saying that or was it just emotion and hope?”

Ian Wright responded: “Whatever he was feeling at the time, if I’m the opposition watching that, I’d be thinking ‘they’re not done and he’s their main guy’.”

Keane interjected “No no wow.”

Neville, in agreement with his former Manchester United team-mate added: “No, if I was watching Declan Rice nearly in tears, and saying it’s not done, I’d be thinking you’re done. ‘It’s not done, It’s not done.’ I look at him and think he’s done.”

Wright clarified: “This is what I’m trying explain, if Pep shows them that, the Man City players will be saying ‘we’ve got them’.”

Neville then said: “It’s a good response, I’m just saying I didn’t feel confident- I’m a big fan of his and I said potentially last week that he would grip that game-

Keane brutally interjected: “And did he? Did he?” Neville, in response to that, said: “No I thought Bernardo Silva and Rodri got a grip of that game.”

Keane finished off the exchange stating: “Exactly, exactly. You have to win that middle of the park battle.”

Guardiola did offer a detailed verdict on why he was such a big fan of Rice’s comment despite a second successive defeat in the Premier League for Arsenal.

He told Sky Sports: “I saw it [on Monday] and it shows what Declan Rice means. That’s the Arsenal mentality, we’ve faced it in the Premier League these [past] seasons and in the Carabao Cup, how competitive they are.”

“Otherwise they can’t have done the season they have done in the Premier League being there and being unbeaten in the Champions League, as you have Mikel [Arteta] but also these type of players that follow the message.”

“And in the bad moments, they have the resilience [to say] we are there, we are there. That is a good example for us what we’re going to face in the six games, five games [for them] in the title race.”

Former Chelsea captain John Terry says he is “worried” about the future of the club and the “position we are in” following the sacking of Liam Rosenior.

Terry, who works as a part-time mentor in Chelsea’s academy, also confirmed he had not received a call about helping interim manager Calum McFarlane.

Rosenior was sacked just three months into a six-year contract and with Chelsea looking unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Under-21s coach McFarlane will take charge until the end of the season, having overseen the draw at Manchester City following the departure of Enzo Maresca earlier this campaign.

“I sit here worrying tonight about what is going to happen with our football club,” Terry said on his TikTok account. “Looking at us needing a manager after the weekend, I’m not sure when ownership are going to make a decision and bring a new manager in.

“Is a real top manager going to come to Chelsea Football Club at the moment in the position we are in? Can’t buy players, looking like we are going to have to sell potentially and that will be our best players, which is always tough. We will not be playing in European football, I hope I am wrong.

“[I’m] really, really frustrated, and worried more importantly. I feel the anger, feel the frustration of the Chelsea supporters.

“But listen, I’ve seen 17 managers in my era come and go as Chelsea captain. What the players have to do is just get together and really focus on the weekend’s game and forget about all the noise around and everything.

“We have a massive game, it is really difficult, but also really easy to do as players to forget the noise and focus on what’s ahead of you and that is the Leeds game at the weekend. We’ve seen this time and time and time again, but maybe the future isn’t as clear as we’ve always seen.”

In February, Terry said he was “frustrated” at being overlooked for the Chelsea interim role following the departure of Maresca. He said he “should have been a part” of the caretaker group that oversaw the draw at Manchester City.

“I am not sure what Calum’s backroom staff is going to look like, I have not had a call, I have not had a message,” Terry added in his TikTok post. “I will be continuing my role in the academy, I will be in the academy tomorrow, a big couple of games coming up.

“We will all get behind Calum, he did a great job away against Man City previously and we will get behind the boys because that is what we do.’

Scarce are the thoroughbreds in preparation boasting two Golden Slipper-conquering sires and dams, so Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott of Tulloch Lodge were justifiably pleased with a win from exquisitely bred filly Loera.

Out of 2013 Slipper winner Overreach by 2016 victor Capitalist, Loera was raised by her dam’s owners the Altomonte family, previous partners with Waterhouse for Overreach.

Bott, pre-partnership days employed at Tulloch Lodge during Overreach’s juvenile phase, remarked on Loera’s resemblance to her renowned mother.

“It’s very satisfying to get that important victory for her. She is a very well bred filly, and I’m delighted to be able to have the opportunity to train her from the Altomontes,” Bott said.

“We had Overreach, and she was obviously very talented. This filly has got so much upside herself. She has come through two very strong races and I’m sure she can go on with it.

“Physically, they are very similar types. Loera is obviously a filly who didn’t go as early as her mother did, but I’m sure there is still plenty of talent there to progress with.”

After a debut second at Rosehill earlier this month, Loera at $2.40 dominated Wednesday’s TAB Plate (1250m), edging Graffiti Tycoon ($1.75 favourite) by three-quarters after the latter’s poor start.

Bott ponders her campaign’s extent but will evaluate post-race and consider the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone May 16 if she’s on song.

“I don’t want to push her too far this preparation. This is her first racing campaign. But I’d love to be able to get some black type along the way for the family,” he said.

“If we can do that this preparation, if she comes through it well, we potentially could look at something through Scone or Queensland.”

Trainer Ciaron Maher has Scone ambitions for Events, the Godolphin Lonhro filly who broke through at Canterbury on Wednesday with a resilient lead effort.

Johann Gerard-Dubord, Maher’s Sydney foreman, affirmed the patience stemmed from her evident class.

“She has always shown a bit of ability, which is why we took our time with her,” Gerard-Dubord said.

“We’d love to get a bit of black type at some stage if possible. You’ve got a race like the Denise’s Joy, which is not that far away, and that could be a nice option.

“We’ll have a chat to the Godolphin team and see what they’re thinking. It’s a good time of year, she won’t mind tracks with a bit of give, so there are plenty of options.”

Punters should check betting sites for markets on Loera potentially in the Denise’s Joy Stakes.

Brian McDermott will lead England’s men into this autumn’s Rugby League World Cup as their new head coach.

The 56-year-old, who won four Super League Grand Finals, two Challenge Cups, the World Club Challenge and the League Leaders’ Shield in eight years as head coach of Leeds Rhinos, takes over from Shaun Wane, who stepped down in January.

McDermott, currently working as an assistant coach at NRL club Gold Coast Titans, will take the England role on a part-time basis, in contrast to his full-time predecessor Wane.

The Yorkshireman was selected by the Rugby Football League from a five-man shortlist, which also included current Leeds head coach Brad Arthur, Warrington’s Sam Burgess, St Helens’ Paul Rowley and former England head coach Steve McNamara.

McDermott said: “I’m incredibly proud to take on the role of England head coach ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

“My focus now is on creating an environment where players can perform with confidence, represent the shirt with pride, and give themselves the best chance of going deep into the tournament.

“I’ve always been hands-on and close to the detail, and that will be important in this role. My job now is to get the standards right, build belief in the group, and make sure we’re ready when it matters.”

McDermott began his career as a head coach in 2006 with Harlequins RL – now London Broncos – before taking charge of Leeds in 2010, enjoying a trophy-laden eight-year stint, during which he also coached the United States national team.

He subsequently had spells with Toronto Wolfpack and Featherstone, before becoming an assistant coach at Newcastle Knights in 2022, and then the Titans last September.

England’s World Cup campaign in Australia begins against Tonga in Perth on 17 October, with games against France and Papua New Guinea to follow.

Hull KR’s treble-winning head coach Willie Peters had told the BBC in February that he was keen to have discussions over the role, but ruled himself out of the running by accepting an offer to join new NRL side Papua New Guinea Chiefs at the end of this season.
