Marlins vs. Astros MLB picks: Alcantara won’t change Miami’s fortunes Wednesday

Published

on

A former Cy Young Award winner who is reportedly on the trade block could be making his final audition start tonight, and I’m not talking about Detroit’s Tarik Skubal – who might be staying put after all (and isn’t pitching tonight). Nope, I mean Miami’s Sandy Alcantara as he takes the hill for the sliding Marlins in an 8:10 ET first pitch in Houston. It’s a weird Wednesday slate with that being the latest start, nary a West Coast night game.

Marlins-Astros MLB same-game parlay

  • Houston +1.5
  • Under 1.5 first-inning runs
  • Alt Under 10.5

DraftKings SGP price: +137

On July 10, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic and other national MLB scribes were reporting that the Marlins would keep Alcantara, the 2022 NL Cy Young winner. But back then, Miami was on a six-game winning streak, a season-high 10 games over .500 and right in the mix for the NL East title and a wild card spot. The team hasn’t won since, entering tonight on an MLB-high eight-game losing streak and perhaps changing the front office’s motivations.

A division title was always a longshot, and that can be forgotten now. Miami is tied for the last NL wild card spot, but the SportsLine Projection Model gives it only a 18.9% shot at the playoffs and DraftKings prices the Marlins at +370, which equates to 21.3%.

Alcantara (10-5, 3.89 ERA) perhaps isn’t a Cy Young type these days, and he has never before or since been as good as he was in 2022, but the 30-year-old is a workhorse innings eater (leads the majors with 162.2 innings pitched). Alcantara is the definition of a No. 2 or 3 starting pitcher on a championship-caliber club. Like, say, the Yankees or Dodgers

Bet on MLB action at FanDuel, where new users can get up to $1,000 in Bet Reset Tokens:

Why would the Marlins deal him – there is a Kalshi market open on his next team — if they still have a very legitimate playoff chance? Because Alcantara is owed $21 million next season if they pick up the club option, then he’s set for free agency in 2027. The penny-pinching Marlins aren’t paying him $21 million — if there even is a 2027 season – and Alcantara has largely established his value following Tommy John surgery that cost him all of 2024.

Following a seven-start streak where Alcantara got a W in each, he is winless in the past two, but both were quality starts. He just got very little run support. When he gets 0-2 runs of support per game (total team runs), Alcantara is 1-4 with a 5.15 ERA this year in six starts.  When the Marlins score 3-5 runs in an outing, he is 1-1 with a 3.51 ERA in five starts. And when they score more than six, the Dominican is 8-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 starts.

Alcantara has not faced Houston this year but was hammered at home by the Astros in August 2025, allowing six runs and nine hits over seven in a loss. The SportsLine Projection Model forecasts him for 6.9 innings, 5.4 strikeouts, 5.6 hits allowed and 2.8 earned runs tonight. He usually goes deep into games and has an Over/Under outs total of 18.5.

Bet on MLB at DraftKings, where new users get $150 in bonus bets after placing a $5+ first wager:

Houston will be a buyer ahead of the deadline and has been linked to a couple of former Cy Young winners in Skubal and the GiantsRobbie Ray but not so much Alcantara. The Astros would not even be within striking distance in the AL West and wild card race without a breakout season from Peter Lambert (8-5, 3.03 ERA).

The 29-year-old had been brutal the first four seasons of his career with Colorado and didn’t pitch in the majors last year, instead going over to Japan. He wasn’t even that good there and only got a minor-league deal with Houston, starting the year at Triple-A. Bettors who have wagered $100 on Houston to win each of his 16 starts would be up $332.

Apparently, the Astros tinkered with his mechanics. In 2024, Lambert threw from a conventional 54-degree arm slot, but this year that arm angle is 49 degrees. That has increased the break on his four-seam fastball. His strikeout percentage on that pitch has increased from 13.2% two years ago to now 23.9%.

I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop on this guy, just hopefully not tonight. Lambert is 2-0 with a 1.02 ERA in three starts this month and the model forecasts him for 5.3 innings, 5.1 strikeouts, 5.2 hits allowed and 2.2 earned runs. He is 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA in 17.0 career innings vs. the Marlins, but no current Miami batters have faced Lambert.

Make your MLB picks at BetMGM Sportsbook and get up to $1,500 in bonus bets if your first bet loses:

DraftKings is offering me Houston +1.5, not as an alt, so I will take it even though if I played Astros money line the parlay price would be much better. Always nice to have that insurance. And if the Under first-inning 1.5 cashes, that obviously increases the chances that the alt Under 10.5 full-game total does. Miami isn’t hitting. Check out other expert picks in the SportsLine daily newsletter.

2018 World Cup winner Djibril Sidibé targeted by Marseille

Published

on

Olympique de Marseille are reportedly considering signing 2018 World Cup winner Djibril Sidibé (33), according to RMC Sport.

A free agent since leaving Toulouse FC, the French full-back is reportedly seen internally as a real opportunity in the transfer market. With considerable top-flight experience under his belt, the player who came through the ranks at ESTAC Troyes is coming off the back of two full seasons in which he made a total of 63 appearances (three goals, seven assists) for the Violets.

This profile has caught the eye of Marseille, where he would immediately be seen as a key figure in the dressing room, whilst several Italian clubs have recently informed the player’s entourage of their desire to lure him across the Pyrenees.

It now remains to be seen which path Sidibé will choose, as he could return to European competition in the south of France, with Marseille having secured their place in the Europa League group stage at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, in second place in Tour de France, withdraws after fall

Published

on

Jonas Vingegaard, the 29-year-old Dane, who was sitting second overall in the 2026 Tour de France, abandoned the race on Sunday after a heavy crash about 20 kilometres from the finish of the 15th stage at the Plateau de Solaison.

Vingegaard went down in a roundabout, taking down several of his Visma-Lease a Bike teammates and Mexican rider Isaac del Toro, who was able to continue.

The winner of the Tour in 2022 and 2023 climbed into the ambulance with his right arm in a sling, writhing in pain.

Yellow jersey wearer Tadej Pogacar managed to avoid the crash.

Vingegaard was visibly in pain following the crash, which caused another four riders to also fall.

He was then helped into a medical vehicle with his arm in a sling. Hours later, his team announced that Vingegaard will undergo surgery on a fractured collarbone following his crash.

“Jonas sustained a fractured collarbone and multiple abrasions. Due to the severity of the collarbone fracture, surgical intervention has been recommended and will be performed in the coming days,” his Visma-Lease a Bike team said in a brief statement.

Quitting the race

It was the first time that Vingegaard had been unable to finish a Grand Tour.

In his five previous participations at the Tour, he won twice and finished second in the other three.

Vingegaard was bidding to become just the ninth man to win the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France in the same year, two years after his chief rival Pogacar achieved the same feat.

His rivals in the battle for the yellow jersey slowed their pace waiting to see if he would rejoin their group before their teams informed them that he had quit the race and they could push on.

That incident briefly impeded their chase of the seven breakaway leaders but they reached the final 11km-long climb to the finish around two-and-a-half minutes behind Swiss rider Mauro Schmid, who had stolen a march on his break companions.

Sunday’s stage was 183.9km from Champagnole in the Jura to Plateau de Solaison in the Alps.

Race leader and reigning champion Pogacar’s team-mate Isaac Del Toro, who was seventh overall, was one of the other fallers, although he was able to set off again soon afterwards to rejoin the peloton.

Vingegaard’s American team-mate Sepp Kuss was another to tumble and he took a lot longer to get going again.

When he did, he was a long way behind the group of leaders.

Vingegaard’s crash came just hours after he and Pogacar were amongst a number of riders to have been woken up at their hotels in the night by anti-doping controllers.

Vingegaard was woken up at 2:00 am, while Pogacar was disturbed three hours later.

Tyson Fury on sparring Anthony Joshua in 2010: ‘They pulled him out’

Published

on

Tyson Fury has claimed Anthony Joshua was ‘pulled out’ of their sparring session in 2010, despite his past suggestion that “AJ” put a ‘beating’ on him.

This week, the two British heavyweights will box in warm-up fights for their own long-awaited clash. Fury will face Mariusz Wach in Thailand on Friday, before Joshua fights Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

Joshua vs Fury is signed and is expected to take place in late 2026, with London’s Wembley Stadium a likely venue in November – if ring walks take place at 2am local time, according to Saudi matchmaker Turki Alalshikh.

Yet it would not be the first time Joshua, 36, and Fury, 37, have shared a ring. In 2010, Fury sparred Joshua and later said: “He came at me for three rounds, and he gave me a beating; I’m not going to deny it.”

Now, however, Fury has told Pro Box TV that he remembers“not a lot really”. “He was an amateur boxer, I was pro – maybe 10-0 or something.

“So yeah, there wasn’t much to think… There was a lot of people in the gym, so there was a lot of witnesses there.

“So yeah, he was just an amateur boxer really. I remember him putting his legs up like this, in the ropes, after about three rounds – turning away in the corner. I remember that quite vividly.

“But yeah, listen, he was just an amateur boxer at that time. He wasn’t like an Olympian or anything, so it wasn’t really: ‘Ooh, the sparring, what do I remember from it?’ I’ve sparred maybe 400 or 500 heavyweights, don’t remember very much from many of them really.

“A vivid memory I do have of it, though, is: I remember in about round three, he started putting his legs up – or round four, he started putting his knees up in the corner. I was like: ‘What the f*** is this?’

“And then they pulled him out and put somebody else in. That was that.”

Joshua would go on to win Olympic gold in 2012, before he and Fury became two-time world heavyweight champions as pros, with each man’s second reign coming to an end at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk.

The unbeaten Ukrainian dethroned Joshua in 2021, in the first of two points wins over AJ. Then in 2024, he outpointed Fury twice, becoming undisputed heavyweight champion with the first of those victories.

Last time out, Fury outpointed Arslanbekh Makhmudov in April, as the Briton ended his fifth retirement from boxing. That result followed Joshua’s December win over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, whom AJ stopped in six rounds.

IDF claims Palestinian soccer players doubled as Hamas terrorists

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

EXCLUSIVE: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has told Fox News Digital that soccer players representing the Palestinian Authority it targeted with military strikes were allegedly also working as terrorists for Hamas and Jihadist groups.

“In recent weeks, false claims have been circulated alleging that the IDF deliberately targeted innocent Palestinian soccer players throughout the war,” the IDF said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“In light of these claims, the IDF is now revealing the identities of Palestinian soccer players, referees, and coaches who were presented as athletes and innocent civilians, but who in fact served as terrorists in the military wings of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, and were struck and eliminated by the IDF during the war.

“Following an intelligence assessment, the IDF can now disclose these terrorists’ organizational affiliations and operational roles. In many cases, they were portrayed internationally only as players, with no mention of their affiliation with terrorist organizations.”

The IDF identified the players as Mohammed Mohammed Hassan Barakat, Mahmoud Kamal Mohammad Ali Al-Rifi, Mohammed Mansour, Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Abu Al-Atta, Abdullah Riyadh Abdullah Khattab, Ali Mahmoud Ahmed Al-Kurd, Mohammad Emad Ata Hussouna, Tariq Ziad Hussein Al-Hour, Mohammed Ziad Hussein Al-Hour, Mahmoud Osama Al-Jazzar and Mohammad Nidal Mohammed Al-Hawajri.

According to the IDF, three of the players were allegedly involved in the Oct. 7, 2023 massacre, and others allegedly served in other terror operations and leadership roles.

“The false campaign portraying the IDF as deliberately targeting members of the soccer community, which was created as part of a broader effort promoted by various actors against the State of Israel, accompanies other false narratives advanced throughout the war,” the IDF added.

“In those campaigns, Palestinian terrorists struck and eliminated by the IDF were presented as journalists, humanitarian aid workers, and other civilian professionals, while their involvement in terrorist activity was deliberately concealed in order to promote false claims that they had been targeted because of their civilian professions.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Permanent Observer Mission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations for a response to the IDF’s claims.

The official Palestinian Football Association (PFA) reported earlier this month that about 1,009 members of its athletic community had been killed by IDF forces since the war began in October 2023, according to Al Jazeera.

The IDF’s exclusive disclosures come against the backdrop of a fierce diplomatic and public relations battle on the global sports stage.

For over two years, the Palestinian Football Association, headed by Jibril Rajoub, has aggressively lobbied the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and FIFA to suspend Israel from international competition. Rajoub and the PFA have repeatedly cited the mounting death toll of Palestinian athletes and the destruction of sports infrastructure in Gaza as grounds for an immediate, indefinite ban.

The campaign reached a boiling point at recent FIFA Congresses. However, following extensive legal reviews, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ultimately rejected the PFA’s demands to suspend Israel entirely.

Instead, FIFA recently opted to impose a fine on the Israel Football Association (IFA) for unrelated disciplinary breaches and ordered the Israeli team to display a “Football Unites the World – No to Discrimination” banner during upcoming matches.

However, FIFA did not let the IFA walk away completely untouched. In a compromise measure, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee opted to penalize the Israeli association for unrelated disciplinary breaches.

The IFA was fined 150,000 Swiss francs (approximately $190,700) for multiple breaches of anti-discrimination obligations. Additionally, FIFA ordered the IFA to implement a mandatory anti-discrimination prevention plan and required the Israeli team to prominently display “Football Unites the World – No to Discrimination” banners during upcoming matches.

David Warner Pleads Guilty To Drink Driving, Faces Prospect Of 9-Month Jail Term

Published

on

Former Australian opener David Warner on Wednesday pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge and faced the prospect of a nine-month jail term for the offence that took place back in April. Warner admitted to drink driving via his lawyer Bobby Hill and was not required to appear in court in person. “Sentencing has been set for 18 August, when Warner faces a minimum disqualification from driving of six months, a potential fine of up to 2,200 Australian dollars and a potential prison sentence of up to nine months,” the BCC reported. The left-hander had returned a positive result for alcohol after being pulled over by the police for a roadside test in Sydney on Easter Sunday back in April.

“He knows what he did was wrong,” Hill had said earlier.

“He accepts that was a reckless decision, a foolish decision to get in his car instead of taking an Uber.”

“Warner had enjoyed three glasses of wine at a friend’s apartment before making that decision. It’s not a crime to have a glass of wine on the day of the Lord’s resurrection. In fact, some would consider that completely appropriate,” Hill told reporters.

Warner’s admission of the crime has cast doubts on his captaincy of the Sydney Thunder franchise in Big Bash.

“The allegations are of course concerning and we take them very seriously”, Cricket New South Wales chief executive Lee Germon said.

“At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates for safe driving, not drink-driving,” he added.

Tyson Fury casts fresh doubt on Anthony Joshua fight happening: “I can never see him taking that”

Published

on

Tyson Fury has raised serious concerns over his proposed showdown with Anthony Joshua.

After over a decade of build-up, Fury and Joshua finally look set to meet later this year, provided that both men can first come through their respective warm-up bouts this weekend.

Fury takes on Mariusz Wach in Thailand on Friday, before Joshua then meets Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia 24 hours later, seemingly paving the way for the all-British showdown at the end of 2026.

‘The Gypsy King’ still doesn’t seem convinced that it will happen though, as he shared his doubts whilst speaking to IFL TV.

“Until that fight happens and we’re walking to the ring, I’m not convinced it does. 100% [I’m doubtful].

I can never see that stiff sitting on a table with me ever. What the f**k is he going to say? I can never see him at a press conference with me, it would be a bombardment. I can never see him taking that.

“He wouldn’t even get in the ring [after the Makhmudov fight]. He s**t himself and sat on a stool outside and didn’t even want to get up and build the fight and make the fight happen when Turki said to us both ‘come on boys let’s do it get in the ring and make it happen.’

“He didn’t want to do it, so how is he going to come face to face with me at a press conference? I think he’s a bottle job, a flapper, a chinless wonder as well.”

Despite Fury’s fears, all signs still point towards the fight taking place later this year, though there still remains a debate over where it will be held.

England football icon Kevin Keegan, former Ballon d’Or winner, dies at 75 | Football News

Published

on

Kevin Keegan, the two-time Ballon d’Or-winning soccer star who captained and coached England and won the European Cup with Liverpool, has died. He was 75.

His death was announced on Monday by former club Newcastle, where he had been both a player and coach. Keegan revealed last month that he had stage four cancer.

“One of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history,” Newcastle said.

For a time in the 1970s, Keegan transcended the English game with his celebrity status.

Keegan, one of just four Englishmen to win the Ballon d’Or, wasn’t just a brilliant soccer player who dovetailed nimbleness and an eye for goal with a relentless hunger and work rate stemming from his working-class upbringing in northern England.

He was also a trendsetter off the field, through his haircut – a perm, which other footballers across Europe started to copy – and his move into celebrity culture that saw him release a single, appear in an after-shave ad with heavyweight boxing great Henry Cooper, and go on TV shows.

Keegan was also something of a trailblazer in his sport as one of the first English players to move to a continental team when he left Liverpool, where he’d just won the European Cup, for German club Hamburger SV in 1977.

“For Hamburg fans he will remain above all a crowd favorite, an exceptional player, and one of the best footballers ever to wear the rhombus (crest) on his chest,” the Bundesliga club said.

It was in Hamburg where Keegan won the Ballon d’Or – then called the European Footballer of the Year award – in 1978 and 1979 and featured in another European Cup final, a 1980 loss to Nottingham Forest.

Keegan scored 21 times in 63 games for England and played at the 1982 World Cup, his only appearance on soccer’s biggest stage after the country failed to qualify in 1974 and 1978.

Coaching career
His 16-year coaching career from 1992-2008 was memorable for almost leading Newcastle, the team where he retired as a player, to the Premier League title in 1995-96, only for a late-season collapse which included Keegan’s unforgettable outburst of “I’d love it if we beat them, love it” in a nod toward Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United – the eventual champion.

He then showed more vulnerability in a 20-month spell in charge of England in 1999 and 2000, during which the team failed to get out of its group at the 2000 European Championship before Keegan resigned after the first game of World Cup qualifying – a 1-0 home loss to Germany in the last game at the old Wembley Stadium.

He announced his departure to Football Association officials in an emotional chat in a toilet cubicle.

Born in Doncaster on February 14, 1951, Keegan first played for fourth-tier Scunthorpe in the English league before joining Liverpool in 1971 and, under iconic manager Bill Shankly, immediately forging a strong on-field relationship with John Toshack in a “big man, little man” strike partnership.

Keegan, 5-feet-8 (1.73 meters) and affectionately nicknamed “Mighty Mouse,” fed off the knockdowns and presence of the tall and slender Toshack.

That combination propelled the Reds to an English league-UEFA Cup double in 1973, and Keegan won two more league titles (1976 and 1977), an FA Cup (1974), another UEFA Cup (1976) when he scored in both legs of the final against Club Brugge, and the big one – the European Cup in 1977 – in a trophy-laden stint at Anfield.

“His legacy at Liverpool will be forever etched in history,” the club said.

“He was regarded as a hero wherever he went.”
In that 1977 final, Keegan won the penalty – given after he was fouled by Berti Vogts – that was converted by Phil Neal to seal a 3-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Hamburg heights
It was widely reported that Keegan then became European soccer’s highest-paid footballer when he joined Hamburg, whose players were initially resentful of the Englishman arriving on big money. He won them round and captured his first Ballon d’Or in 1978 – despite Hamburg only finishing 10th in the German league in his first season – and then helped the club win the title in 1979, with a reward being another Ballon d’Or.

“Hamburger SV will always cherish the memory of its former championship-winning player and two-time Ballon d’Or winner,” the German club said.

Off the field, Keegan’s status soared. That year, he released “Head Over Heels in Love,” which finished higher in the singles’ charts in Germany (No. 10) than in England (No. 31), and opened up his home for a behind-the-scenes documentary following his life.

In his third season at Hamburg, the team lost the European Cup final and the Bundesliga to Bayern Munich, and Keegan returned to England with Southampton. There he was the English league’s top scorer with 30 goals in the 1981-82 season – his second and last at the club before moving to Newcastle, his father’s favorite team.

With his work rate and personality, Keegan was adored at St. James’ Park – setting the seed for his later coaching roles there – until he retired in the summer of 1984, though he did put his boots back on in 1985 for a couple of guest appearances for Australian team Blacktown in the Sydney suburbs.

Crysencio Summerville transfer twist emerges after deal agreed for £68m Man United target

Published

on

Manchester United can afford fresh hope in their pursuit of West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville despite Saudi side Al-Hilal reportedly agreeing a £68million deal to buy the winger

Crysencio Summerville may yet become a Manchester United player this summer after a delay regarding his move to Al-Hilal. It emerged this week that West Ham had agreed to sell their winger in a move potentially worth £68million.

However, the Netherlands international has reportedly put the brakes on his Riyadh transfer. And that postponement could give United the opening they need to poach a deal of their own if they act quickly enough.

Gazzetta dello Sport has reported Roma are also hoping to capitalise on their late lifeline in negotiations. And they have one of their own to thank after Donyell Malen allegedly intervened to convince his countryman of a move to the Stadio Olimpico.

Get MEN Premium now for just £1 HERE – or get involved in our United WhatsApp group by clicking HERE. You can also join our United Facebook page by clicking HERE and don’t miss out on our brilliant selection of newsletters HERE.

Summerville’s World Cup team-mate is described as having reached out to his friend at the 11th hour to try and deliver him to the Italian capital. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini is also purported to have waded in with a phone call of his own to try and turn the tide.

Summerville has his countrymen at United, too, with Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee already part of the furniture at Old Trafford. However, neither player was part of Ronald Koeman’s World Cup squad and thus won’t necessarily carry as much sway turning his head towards Manchester.

Roma’s financial package was unsurprisingly inferior in every way compared to that of Al-Hilal. West Ham had agreed to a sale worth £43m, a club-record purchase for the Giallorossi, while reports put Al-Hilal’s accepted bid somewhere between £60m and £68m.

It’s also reported the Saudi giants put up an offer that would see Summerville earn £12.5m per season, or £240,000 a week. That works out at almost four times the £70,000-a-week agreement Roma had in place.

United are reportedly still on the hunt for a winger capable of playing off the left flank. That’s despite speculation suggesting Michael Carrick is eager to see Marcus Rashford return to the fold at Old Trafford following his loan at Barcelona.

The club has numerous options capable of playing off the right wing in Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu and Amad. Matheus Cunha was the most prominent player off the left for United last term but may be preferred more centrally in Carrick’s attack.

Summerville, 24, was one of the bright lights in a Netherlands World Cup campaign that ended in disappointing fashion. The former Leeds star only made his debut for De Oranje in early June before bagging back-to-back goals in his first two competitive appearances at the World Cup.

Those performances put some of Europe’s elite on notice in light of West Ham’s relegation to the Championship. However, he’s clearly also made an impression in Saudi Arabia given Al-Hilal’s willingness to pay a premium fee for his services.

Gazzetta’s report suggested part of Gasperini’s appeal to the player involved the prospect of a future move back to the Premier League. However, United may yet skip the need for that stage altogether if they decide to move for his signature now.

Thousands of Man United fans upgraded their matchday last season. This is how they did it.
