MLB roundup: Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara shuts out White Sox on 93 pitches
Apr 1, 2026; Miami, Florida, USA; Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara (22) reacts following his complete game shutout win over the Chicago White Sox by catcher Liam Hicks (34) at loanDepot Park. Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-Imagn Images Sandy Alcantara pitched a three-hit shutout and Liam Hicks drove in four runs, leading the host Miami Marlins to a 10-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday afternoon.
Alcantara (2-0) did not walk a batter and struck out seven, throwing just 93 pitches. It was his fifth career shutout and the second time he pitched a “Maddux” — a complete-game shutout in fewer than 100 pitches.
Hicks went 3-for-4 with his third homer of the season as the Marlins improved to 5-1 while the White Sox fell to 1-5.
Chicago starter Shane Smith (0-2) allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits in three innings.
Braves 5, Athletics 1
Drake Baldwin drove in four runs to support the stellar pitching effort of Chris Sale and help Atlanta defeat the visiting Athletics in the rubber game of a three-game series.
Sale (2-0) worked six innings and allowed one run on one hit. He retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced. Sale now has 2,858 strikeouts, leaving him 19 away from catching former Atlanta great Tom Glavine for 29th on the all-time list.
Shea Langeliers got the Athletics on the board in the fourth by hitting his majors-leading fifth homer. Langeliers went 2-for-4 and raised his average to .375.
Orioles 8, Rangers 2
Leody Taveras, Taylor Ward and Jeremiah Jackson drove in two runs each and Baltimore turned strong offensive production into a victory over visiting Texas to salvage the finale of a three-game series.
Dylan Beavers and Samuel Basallo hit solo home runs. Beavers finished with three hits and three runs. The Orioles received another strong start from Trevor Rogers (2-0), who worked six innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
Corey Seager homered for the Rangers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Josh Jung delivered his first hits of the season, after an 0-for-18 start, and finished with a pair of singles. Nathan Eovaldi (0-2) was charged with six runs on eight hits in four innings.
Pirates 8, Reds 3
Oneil Cruz homered for the second straight day and Paul Skenes bounced back from a rough season opener to lead Pittsburgh to a win over host Cincinnati.
With two runners on in the first, Cruz crushed an 81 mph curveball from Reds starter Andrew Abbott (0-1) 407 feet over the right field fence to stake the Pirates to a 3-0 lead. Skenes (1-1) backed it up by tossing five innings and allowing one run on three hits.
Abbott gave up four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer for the Reds.
Rockies 2, Blue Jays 1 (10 innings)
Pinch hitter Tyler Freeman singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as visiting Colorado earned a victory over Toronto.
Freeman, activated before the game, singled against Brendon Little (0-1) to score Brenton Doyle from second base as the Rockies won the decisive game of a three-game set. Jimmy Herget pitched a perfect 10th to earn his first save after Brennan Bernardino (1-0) tossed a perfect ninth.
Toronto wasted a strong start from Kevin Gausman, who went six scoreless innings while allowing two hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Davis Schneider single against Kyle Freeland but left the bases loaded.
Cardinals 2, Mets 1 (11 innings)
Masyn Winn delivered a walk-off bloop RBI single in the 11th inning for St. Louis, which edged New York in the rubber game of a three-game series.
Gordon Graceffo (1-0) earned the win by getting the final two outs of the 11th. Graceffo got Brett Baty to hit into a grounder that forced Jared Young at home before he retired Marcus Semien on a flyout. Nolan Gorman had an RBI single in the sixth for the Cardinals, who have won their first two series.
Juan Soto homered in the sixth for the Mets, who were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position as they fell to 1-2 this year in extra innings.
Cubs 6, Angels 2
Nico Hoerner went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a stolen base, a run and an RBI and Matt Shaw had two hits and two RBIs to lead Chicago to a victory over visiting Los Angeles in the decisive game of a three-game series.
Matthew Boyd (1-1) bounced back from an Opening Day loss to pick up the win. Boyd allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out 10 and walking two. Michael Busch had two hits and a run for the Cubs.
Zach Neto had two hits and a run for the Angels, who finished 3-4 on a season-opening road trip. Los Angeles managed just four hits on a windy 39-degree day,. Yusei Kikuchi (0-1) permitted five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Royals 13, Twins 9
Jonathan India belted his fifth career grand slam and Kyle Isbel also went deep among his four hits, lifting host Kansas City to a victory over Minnesota.
Maikel Garcia drove in three runs as the Royals benefited from their Nos. 6-9 hitters — India, Jac Caglianone, Isaac Collins and Isbel — combining to go 10-for-16 with eight RBIs and nine runs. Noah Cameron (1-0) won his season debut after allowing one run on four hits in five innings.
Minnesota scored eight runs over its final three innings — highlighted by Josh Bell’s three-run homer in the ninth — before Lucas Erceg retired the two batters he faced to secure his second save. Astros 6, Red Sox 4
Carlos Correa’s two-out, three-run home run in the fifth inning changed the game, helping Houston complete a three-game sweep of visiting Boston.
Correa and Christian Vazquez both went deep while Yordan Alvarez finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs for the Astros, who have won five straight since an 0-2 start. Mike Burrows (1-1) pitched five innings of two-run ball.
Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony homered in the eighth and ninth, respectively, as the Red Sox staged a failed comeback bid. Garrett Crochet (1-1) allowed five runs (four earned) in five innings. Phillies 6, Nationals 5 (10 innings)
Edmundo Sosa had a game-tying two-run single in the ninth inning and Justin Crawford provided a game-ending single in the 10th as Philadelphia rallied for a victory over visiting Washington.
Playing in just his fifth major league game, Crawford slammed the first pitch he saw from Cole Henry (0-1) past a drawn-in infield for the victory to send his teammates storming out of the dugout. Philadelphia trailed 5-1 through seven innings but rallied to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.
CJ Abrams hit a three-run homer for Washington, while Joey Wiemer continued his hot start to the season with two hits, a walk and two runs. Brewers 8, Rays 2
Christian Yelich chopped a tiebreaking two-run single in a six-run eighth inning, and host Milwaukee rallied to a win against Tampa Bay.
Yelich and Garrett Mitchell each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Brice Turang clubbed a two-run shot as the Brewers won for the fifth time in six games to open the season. In six innings, Jacob Misiorowski yielded two runs on four hits. Aaron Ashby (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth.
The Rays’ Yandy Diaz swatted a two-run homer, and Chandler Simpson went 2-for-3 with a walk. Starter Drew Rasmussen tossed five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. He fanned eight, all swinging, and walked one. Diamondbacks 1, Tigers 0
Corbin Carroll became the sixth left-handed hitter to homer off Tarik Skubal, and Zac Gallen and three Arizona relievers made that stand up for a victory over Detroit in Phoenix.
Carroll drove a 97 mph fastball over the fence in left-center for his second homer of the season as the second batter in the last of the first inning. The blast enabled the Diamondbacks to complete a three-game sweep.
Two-time defending Cy Young Award winner Skubal (1-1) yielded six hits in seven innings. Gallen (1-1) allowed four hits in six scoreless innings. Guardians 4, Dodgers 1
Gavin Williams struck out 10 in seven shutout innings, Gabriel Arias and Jose Ramirez homered and Cleveland won the decisive game of a three-game series at Los Angeles.
Williams (1-1) gave up two hits and walked three as the Guardians capped a 4-3, season-opening road trip.
Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. Freddie Freeman hit a home run with two outs in the ninth inning, spoiling the Guardians’ shutout bid. Yankees 5, Mariners 3
Cam Schlittler pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings as New York defeated host Seattle.
The Yankees won five of six games on their season-opening trip to San Francisco and Seattle, outscoring their opponents 24-6. Paul Goldschmidt hit a three-run homer and Ben Rice added a solo shot for New York, which won the final two games of the series after dropping the opener.
Schlittler (2-0) allowed just two hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven. David Bednar pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his third save of the season. For Seattle, Cal Raleigh hit a two-run single and George Kirby (1-1) gave up four runs on five hits over six innings. Padres 7, Giants 1
Ramon Laureano blasted a two-run homer and Nick Pivetta yielded only one hit in five shutout innings as San Diego avoided a series sweep by visiting San Francisco.
Pivetta (1-1) fanned eight and walked two. Mason Miller worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his second save. Laureano, Manny Machado and Gavin Sheets each had two hits for the Padres.
Giants starter Adrian Houser (0-1) yielded three runs, one earned, over 5 1/3 innings in his season debut. Luis Arraez collected three of San Francisco’s four hits. –Field Level Media

NFL news: Seahawks Super Bowl lineman Shane Lemieux, 28, retires after injury struggles
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Shane Lemieux, an NFL offensive lineman who won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks earlier this year, has announced that he is retiring.
Lemieux, a fifth-round pick by the New York Giants in the 2020 NFL Draft, shared the surprising life update on his LinkedIn page on Tuesday. The 28-year-old pointed to the five surgeries he’s undergone during his playing career as a driving force that led him to his decision.

“After graduating from the University of Oregon and being drafted by the New York Giants, I had dreams of a 10+ year, All-Pro career,” Lemieux wrote. “I believed I could get there. But after 5 surgeries and more time in the training room than on the field, the game started to look different to me. That is why I am deciding to step away with the health that I have.

“While I didn’t achieve that goal, the lessons I learned through the injuries, the releases, and finally getting back on the field mean more to me going forward than any accolade ever could have. And the relationships built along the way have been the most impactful of all.”

In 2021, Lemieux underwent season-ending surgery to repair his left knee’s patella tendon. The following year, he injured a toe during the preseason and was ultimately placed on season-long injured reserve in December. In 2023, Lemieux tore his biceps during an October practice and managed to play just 27 snaps during the season.

After a brief stint with the New Orleans Saints in 2024 and 2025, Lemieux inked a deal with Seattle in September 2025 to join the Seahawks’ practice squad. He did not feature in a game for the Seahawks a season ago.
What’s next for Lemieux, who will turn 29 in May, is unclear, but the former first-team All-American signed off on his retirement announcement with a motivating message.

Braves promote RHP Didier Fuentes, shuffle rotation
Mar 29, 2026; Cumberland, Georgia, USA; Atlanta Braves pitcher Didier Fuentes (72) pitches against the Kansas City Royals during the sixth inning at Truist Park. Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images The Atlanta Braves promoted right-hander Didier Fuentes from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Wednesday’s road game against the Washington Nationals.
Right-handed reliever Ian Hamilton was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Fuentes.
The Braves pushed previously announced starter Martin Perez back to Thursday at Washington, giving fellow left-hander Chris Sale an additional day of rest before he takes the mound at home Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Fuentes, who made his major league debut last season, started the season in the Atlanta bullpen before being sent down to Gwinnett to build up as a starter. He had a 2.25 ERA in four major league innings with four strikeouts and one walk before he was sent down. In three Triple-A starts spanning 16 2/3 innings, he went 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA, 20 strikeouts and six walks.
Fuentes, who debuted three days after his 20th birthday last June, had a 13.85 ERA in four starts and 13 innings in 2025, allowing 20 earned runs on 23 hits. However, his 0.66 ERA, 18 strikeouts and one walk over 13 2/3 innings this spring helped him earn an Opening Day roster spot.
Hamilton, 30, allowed three runs in one inning of his Braves debut in Tuesday’s 11-4 loss to the Nationals. Over seven seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2018, 2020), Minnesota Twins (2022), New York Yankees (2023-25) and Braves, Hamilton is 6-6 with a 3.75 ERA over 151 1/3 innings.

Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo rips USA chants at RBC Heritage
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Matt Fitzpatrick bested Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at the RBC Heritage this weekend in what became a road game for him.
The Hilton Head, South Carolina, crowd was quickly pulling for Scheffler, a Texan, to complete the comeback over Fitzpatrick, who was born in England.
Chants of “USA” rang out, which irked broadcasting legend Chris “Mad Dog” Russo.

“I put on the RBC Classic … and I could not believe the 18th hole when Scottie Scheffler was making a comeback against Matt Fitzpatrick. Did anyone see the crowd?” Russo began for his “What Are You Mad About” segment on Wednesday’s edition of ESPN’s “First Take.
“They were singing ‘USA, USA’ walking down the 18th fairway! This is not the Ryder Cup. We’re not fighting Britain in a war for crying out loud! In a golf tournament? At the RBC? [Fitzpatrick] freaking lives in Miami!.. This is not the ’80 Olympics!
Scheffler and Fitzpatrick both have starred in each of the previous three Ryder Cups, with Fitzpatrick’s European team winning the last two. Fitzpatrick and Scheffler faced off in Friday foursomes in the most recent event.

STEPHEN A SMITH REFUSES TO CALL GOLFERS, NASCAR DRIVERS ATHLETES: ‘THAT DON’T COUNT’
It is hardly the first time USA chants were heard at a regularly-sanctioned golf event. The aforementioned DeChambeau heard USA chants while going for his second U.S. Open against McIlroy. Scheffler went 1-4 in his five matches at Bethpage Black in September, beating Rory McIlroy 1 up in their Sunday singles match. Fitzpatrick squandered a 5 up lead to Bryson DeChambeau to finish all square.
The New York Ryder Cup crowd was blasted by media, and golfers, alike, which had been a concern even before the event. However, that criticism came due to much more than simple USA chants.
McIlroy was hit with the worst of it, whether it was telling him his wife was “a four,” asking about Amanda Balionis amid a previously rumored fling (with his wife mere feet away), dropping F-bombs, or constant reminders of the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Thankfully for Fitzpatrick, he didn’t get hit that hard. But the crowd still made it known who they were backing.

IPL 2026: ‘He’s in my pocket’- Jadeja on his cheeky celebration after dismissing Pooran | Cricket News
Ravindra Jadeja produced a match-winning all-round performance as Rajasthan Royals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 40 runs, and the veteran all-rounder later reflected on his effort with a mix of clarity, humour and gratitude. Named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 43 and impact with the ball, Jadeja began on a heartfelt note. “Yeah, feeling good, you know, getting Man of the Match and winning the team. So, yeah, I’m feeling very good, but before I start, I would like to dedicate this award to Education Minister of Gujarat because she told me yesterday itself said that you’re gonna do wonders tomorrow. So I would like to thank her.” Jadeja’s knock came at a crucial time when Rajasthan’s top order had once again faltered. He revealed that the conditions were far from easy and required patience. “Yeah, wicket was not that easy because ball was seaming and swinging. So I thought, let me play a longer as much as I can. And that is what I was talking to Donovan and whoever is coming next to batting. So I was just talking to him that we’ll play a longer because in T20 cricket, you never know. Last over, as we like we cashed in, like we got 20 odd runs in last over. So that is what the thinking behind.” He also explained his approach against Mayank Yadav in the final over, where Rajasthan managed to finish strongly. “Yeah, I think coming from injury, it’s not that easy bowling with that pace. But I was just backing my strength and I was talking to my partner that let’s back each other and let’s play good cricket shot. Because as I said, on this wicket, ball was seaming a lot and bounce was there. So it’s not that easy that you can play any shot at any given time.” There was also a lighter moment when Jadeja spoke about his celebration after dismissing Nicholas Pooran. “Yeah, he’s in my pocket (chuckles). Nothing, just randomly a thought came into my mind and I did it.” With the ball, Jadeja highlighted how he adjusted to the conditions by varying his pace. “No, because the ball was gripping a little bit. So I was just thinking that should I bowl quicker on this wicket or should I bowl slow? So I thought, okay, I’d bowl a few slow balls. And then I realized that yeah, if I bowl slow, then I might get a little bit hold from the wicket. So that is what I was looking to do.” He also spoke about his specific plans against Mitchell Marsh. “Because the midwicket side and long-in side was a little bit shorter compared to other sides. So I knew that he might play that shot at some stage. So I was just bowling and mixing up with my pace, slow, wide and full ball also. Today I was looked to bowl slow.” Jadeja’s performance proved decisive in a game where Rajasthan’s batting once again struggled for rhythm. His late flourish ensured they reached 159 for 6, and the bowlers, led by Jofra Archer, did the rest as LSG were bowled out for 119. On a night where Rajasthan needed someone to step up, Jadeja delivered with both bat and ball, underlining his value once again.

Erin King: Leadership, injury and pet peeves – the making of Ireland’s captain
Offering an insight into her mindset, King says that laziness is “one of my biggest pet peeves”.
King said she did 10-hour days in rehab as she wanted to “control everything I could” in her recovery.
Almost a year to the day from her injury, she made her return in green, this time as captain, against England in front of 77,00 fans at Allianz Stadium.
She admitted she was “really emotional” in the week leading up to the game and it “felt a little surreal”, and she has a “newfound gratefulness” of playing the sport she loves.
“It’s given me this whole new perspective and it can be taken away from you like that,” she said.
“A big part of the way I want to captain this team is the person before the player.
“If you’re happy, enjoying yourself and you feel welcome and happy in your environment, you’re going to play better.”
The ‘Green Wave’ is a name that has been adopted for the Irish support, and King has introduced her own “undercurrent” to help bond the group.
It is her way of recognising “all the little moments that add up to create these amazing moments”.
“I really like placing emphasis on the little bits and pieces and the unseen work,” she said.
“Having this never say die attitude and chasing lost causes, because you don’t know which moment is going to matter and what could create magic.”

Lewis Moody: Former England captain announces MND ride
Moody, who was diagnosed after noticing a weakness in his shoulder while training in the gym, says the progression of his disease seems gradual.
“I’m good at the moment,” he said.
“The only sort of significant noticeable change is still in my hand. The shoulder strength is diminished, but not significantly reduced since diagnosis.
“Without a shadow of a doubt, the hardest thing is noticing little things every day. The other day I noticed a slight difference in my finger strength – whether it was opening a bottle top, holding a fork, cutting your food.
“Those little things mentally are a challenge when they present themselves, but I think within a day you can move past it and just focus on functional things I can do, rather than things that I’m less able to.”
Moody, who set up his own charitable foundation shortly after he retired and raised millions of pounds to fund research into brain tumours,, external says recruiting for June’s cycle and a new cause was straightforward.
Jonny Wilkinson, Mike Tindall, Martin Corry, Ben Kay, Phil Vickery and Andy Gomarsall – all fellow members of the squad that won England’s only Rugby World Cup – will take part in the ride, along with the ex-Leicester and Bath flanker’s former team-mates Tom Croft, Geordan Murphy, Leon Lloyd, Ben Youngs, Tom Youngs, Lee Mears, Danny Care, Dan Hipkiss and Louis Deacon.
Moody’s teenage sons Dylan and Ethan will also be part of the peloton.
“I have done a challenge every year since retiring, some years more than one,” said Moody.
“I really wanted to make sure that I got another one in. I don’t know how many I have got left to do so that was the reason for it being so soon, to make sure that physically I feel like I can contribute.
“I couldn’t be more grateful of my former colleagues. I chatted to Vicks [Vickery] the other day, he said ‘mate, I absolutely hate cycling, but I am 100% going to do this with you’.
“I’ve never seen Wilko [Wilkinson] on a bike. He’s probably hired a group of people to get him ready for the conditioning side of it. I dread to think how he’s going to turn up looking. He’s in unbelievable nick anyway.”

America’s best college golf course returns after high-profile redo
The college golf rankings are always in flux. But college golf course rankings? Not so much. With all due respect to fine layouts at Stanford, Williams, Ohio State, Oklahoma State and others, one campus course has long been consensus No. 1.
When it’s actually open, that is.
For Yale Golf Course, a celebrated Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor design, that’s been hit or miss in recent years. After shutting down at the end of the 2019 season, the course slumbered on through 2020, beset by maintenance problems that deepened during the pandemic. In late 2023, it shuttered again, this time for a full-scale renovation that rates among the most notable public-access redos in recent memory. That work consumed 2024 and 2025, but it’s now complete, and the scheduling could hardly be better-synced.
On April 28, just ahead of its centennial, Yale GC will be back in business, following a Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner-led renovation aimed at honoring Macdonald and Raynor’s original 1926 vision. Greens, tees, bunkers and fairways have been expanded to their historic dimensions. The iconic double punch bowl on No. 3 has been revived. The rare inverted bunkers on No. 6 are back. New championship tees push the layout past 7,000 yards, and every green has been rebuilt to USGA specs, a first in course history.
Yale once ranked as high as 71st on GOLF’s Top 100 Courses in the World list, but dropped off the last three editions, a rare — and glaring — shift in the college course hierarchy. It’s hard to imagine that the course won’t be in the mix next time ballots are submitted.
But never mind rankings. Let’s talk recreational play. Unlike many elite collegiate layouts, you don’t need a diploma — or an acceptance letter — to book a time at Yale. Green fees for non-affiliates run $350, which isn’t cheap but about what you’d expect for a course of this pedigree. Getting out on Yale, in other words, is much easier than getting in.
3 things I’m thinking
Philadelphia story: Another Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner project — the full restoration of Cobbs Creek in Philadelphia — is still roughly a year from completion. But an important phase crossed the finish line this week with the grand opening of Lincoln Financial Center at Cobbs Creek. A name like that makes the place sound like a baseball stadium. In fact, the center is a three-story building that houses a restaurant, pro shop and double-decker driving range with Toptracer technology, all good to go for the start of the 2026 season. As with other recent marquee muni revivals, including the Patch, the Park and Golden Gate Par 3, work at Cobbs Creek has been propelled by deep-pocketed private investment. And the benefits are already showing, though the big biggest payoff won’t come until 2027, when the updated Olde Course at Cobbs Creek (the original was designed by Hugh Wilson of nearby Merion fame) opens for play.
Whale of a change: The humpbacks will be back in Kapalua, but it’s hard to know what else might change now that the PGA Tour won’t be returning. You probably heard the news. The Tour has done away with its Hawaii Swing — both the Sony Open on Oahu, and The Sentry, the traditional season-opener at the Plantation Course in Kapalua on Maui. It’s no secret that Kapalua has been through the wringer in recent years, ravaged by drought and devastated by deadly wildfires in nearby Lahaina. Now comes the end of a 25-plus-year-old tournament that accounted for an estimated $50 million in annual economic activity for the island. Kapalua’s other course — the Bay Course — remains closed due to water issues. But the Plantation Course, which shuttered for three months last September, is up and running, which makes me wonder how it might be used in January, now that it won’t be hosting an tournament that it first staged in 1999. With the Tour pros absent, will that week revert to everyday resort play? Maybe. Maybe not. A well-placed source tells me that Kapalua is looking into welcoming another event during that same window, though what shape that might take is still TBD.
Festive fundraiser? Possibly? More muni-related news, though it comes with a caveat. Registration is open for The Whole Hog, a daylong golf outing and barbecue fundraiser at East Potomac Golf Links in Washington D.C. It is scheduled for May 8 in support of National Links Trust — the same National Links Trust that was working to restore East Potomac when the federal government revoked its lease late last year. Though NLT still operates the course, that status is tenuous, a point underscored by the invitation to the event. The cost per player is $375, which includes 36 holes of golf, breakfast, lunch, dinner and tee prizes. But, the invitation notes, there’s “a chance that NLT will no longer be operating the course at the time of the event due to the actions of the Trump administration. If this occurs, we will refund the entry fee.”

Liam Rosenior Sacked As Chelsea Manager
Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton on Tuesday proved the last straw.© AFP
Liam Rosenior has been sacked as Chelsea manager following a run of five successive Premier League defeats, the club announced on Wednesday. The 41-year-old had only been in charge for just over three months after being lured away from French side Strasbourg which is affiliated to Chelsea’s American owners. Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton on Tuesday proved the last straw. It is the first time Chelsea have lost five consecutive league games without scoring since 1912, a run which has left them seven points adrift of the Champions League places.
“Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior,” read a club statement.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season.
“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.”
Calum McFarlane will be in charge in a caretaker capacity, the club added, with his first match an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United on Sunday.

Cowboys plan for George Pickens to play on franchise tag in 2026 without long-term deal
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are planning for George Pickens to play on the franchise tag this year and won’t negotiate with the star receiver or his agent on a long-term contract, executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said Wednesday.
Pickens hasn’t signed the one-year deal worth $27.3 million, which means the 25-year-old would face no financial penalties if he didn’t report to mandatory minicamp in June. The rest of the offseason program, which starts Monday, is voluntary.

“We’ve made a decision that we’re going to have George play under the franchise tag, which won’t be a first for us,” Stephen Jones said. “So there won’t be negotiations on a long-term deal. But that’s certainly not a first for this organization and certainly won’t be a first in the league in terms of this decision as we move forward.”
Stephen Jones said he hasn’t talked to Pickens recently, but said owner Jerry Jones and coach Brian Schottenheimer met with him recently.
“It was good,” Schottenheimer said during the Cowboys’ news conference leading into the NFL draft, which starts Thursday night. “The thing that George knows about Jerry and myself is we’re very upfront and we’re honest. We had great conversation. We informed him. We think that’s important because that’s the way we handle all of our players and coaches.”
David Mulugheta, Pickens’ agent, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Pickens, acquired last offseason in a trade with Pittsburgh, had career highs in catches (93), yards receiving (1,429) and touchdowns (nine) for one of the best offenses in the NFL last season. Dallas had one of the worst defenses in the league and finished 7-9-1, missing the playoffs for the second year in a row.
The 2022 second-round pick out of Georgia thrived alongside CeeDee Lamb, who is going into the second year of a $136 million, four-year contract that currently ranks him third among NFL receivers with an average annual value of $34 million.
Lamb missed the entire offseason and training camp in 2024 holding out for the deal he signed about two weeks before the season opener.
The Cowboys couldn’t use the tag on Lamb because he was going into the fifth year of his rookie contract. The fifth year is a team option that goes with all deals for first-round picks. Second-rounders have four-year deals, and Pickens earned $6.8 million on his rookie contract.

Pickens’ talent was on display during three seasons with the Steelers, but so were enough instances of petulant or indifferent behavior for then-coach Mike Tomlin to question his maturity.
Schottenheimer never took issue with Pickens publicly in his first season as a head coach after a quarter-century as an NFL assistant. But Pickens and Lamb were benched for the first series in Las Vegas after missing curfew following a casino visit the night before the game.
“There’s a lot of things that go into that,” Stephen Jones said of the decision not to go forward on a long-term deal this offseason. “Let’s start with the fact that it’s not easy having two receivers being paid top of the market. A quarterback that’s been here, being the highest-paid player in this league for many years now.”
“The other thing is the newness of George being here,” Stephen Jones said. “I think George has just done an amazing job. I mean he’s exceeded all expectations. And a lot of those things, they make their way toward a long-term deal, but that’s the biggest part of it — between the business and newness of it, I think that’s a big part of it.”
