Modric Marks 200th Croatia Appearance With World Cup Win Over Panama

Published

on

Croatia kept their hopes of reaching the World Cup last 32 alive after a 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto on Tuesday.

Substitute Ante Budimir scored the only goal of the match nine minutes into the second half, calmly finishing from Josip Stanisic’s low cross.

The win gave Croatia their first points in Group L and means they can secure a place in the knockout stage with victory over Ghana on Saturday.

The match was also a special occasion for Croatia captain Luka Modrić, who made his 200th international appearance. The 40-year-old midfielder helped control the game before being substituted late on.

Panama pushed for an equaliser, but Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković made several important saves to protect his side’s lead.

Croatia will now face Ghana in a decisive final group match, while Panama take on England.

FIFA scraps controversial private investment plan after backlash

Published

on

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Saturday he has scrapped a plan to allow private investment in the World Cup following fierce backlash from football officials worldwide.

“Our purpose has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve,” Infantino said in a statement.

“As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”

FIFA, world football’s governing body, had floated the plan on Tuesday, saying it could raise up to $4.2 billion based on a valuation of $20 billion for a new FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a commercial subsidiary it proposed to run events such as the World Cup and Club World Cup.

It said that, if approved, the project could provide each of FIFA’s 211 member associations with a one-off payment of $20 million in early 2027 and increase their funding allocation for the 2027-2030 cycle from $8 million to $20 million.

The Asian Football Confederation, which represents 47 member nations, welcomed the plan’s withdrawal on Saturday.

Any initiative that may impact global football should be “presented and discussed with the Confederations, the FIFA Council, Member Associations (MAs) and other stakeholders in a timely, transparent and meaningful manner,” the Kuala Lumpur-based body said in a statement.

The Mexican Football Federation also welcomed the move, saying that “unity among all the Confederations and Federations has been prioritised for the good of football”.

Earlier this week, European football’s governing body UEFA said none of its national teams would participate in any FIFA competition “for so long as these proposals remain alive”.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and North American and Caribbean federation (CONCACAF) also condemned the move.

“The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product,” UEFA said in a statement. “No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.”

Pressure mounted on Infantino on Friday with the resignation of senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro, who called the idea “a bad deal for FIFA’s member associations, a bad deal for football, and a bad deal for the long-term future of the game”.

South American confederation CONMEBOL, whose president Alejandro Dominguez is regarded as a close ally of Infantino, demanded further information on the “scope, structure, governance and potential effects” of the project.

‘Created divisions’

In the late-night statement announcing the plan was dead, Infantino said the project was conceived as a means of strengthening member associations, and that it would only have gone ahead if a majority supported it.

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” he said.

FIFA had tried to fend off the critics, saying in a statement early Friday that it would continue consultations with member associations and insisting that “nobody is selling football”.

But the pressure mounted, and not just within the football community.

A day after the European Union praised UEFA for “defending the integrity of the game,” UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Friday that Infantino was “the wrong man” to lead FIFA.

The beleaguered Infantino said he would focus now on restoring harmony while continuing to grow the game.

“Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support,” he said.

Terry Rozier’s lawyers seek to dismiss charges, say text proved innocence

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

NBA player Terry Rozier is getting ready to prove his innocence in a tremendous gambling controversy, but prosecutors aren’t buying it.

The guard is accused of purposely taking himself out of a game while playing for the Charlotte Hornets, so friends could cash in on bets on his “under” propositions.

According to reports, attorney David Markus filed a motion to dismiss two charges against Rozier. In the motion, Markus wrote that a text sent by Rozier’s friend and co-defendant, Deniro Laster, showed that Rozier was unaware of any bets and did not agree to any sort of fix.

“Dont tell chum bout the bet,” Laster allegedly wrote in the March 29 text, six days after Rozier played just nine minutes and left the game due to an apparent injury. Chum is Rozier’s nickname, the filing noted.

The recipient responded, “Hell no,” the filing said.

“This should end the case. One does not hide a bet from the person who supposedly sold it,” Markus said in the filing.

However, federal prosecutors say they have evidence showing that the text did not relate to sports gambling.

Rozier is alleged to have told Laster that he would take himself out of a game early, citing an injury so Laster could place wagers based on the information. Neither Hornets officials nor betting companies were made aware of Rozier’s plan, according to the indictment, and Rozier was not listed on the team’s injury report.

Laster then allegedly sold that information to other co-conspirators, and numerous people placed wagers totaling roughly $200,000 on Rozier’s “under” prop bets in both parlay and straight wagers. After Rozier played just nine minutes and never returned, the bets won. Rozier and Laster counted cash winnings at Rozier’s home in Charlotte roughly a week later, the indictment says.

Prosecutors in April said they sought to file superseding charges of sports bribery and honest services wire fraud during a hearing. Prosecutors said they had evidence that Rozier solicited and received a bribe amid the alleged gambling scheme.

Rozier was waived by the Miami Heat earlier this year.

Nearly three dozen people were arrested last October in two separate cases, one regarding betting on NBA games based on insider knowledge, and another regarding a poker ring in which former guard and head coach Chauncey Billups allegedly participated in rigged games.

Nigeria produced one of the greatest comebacks in football history on July 31, 1996, defeating Brazil 4-3 after extra time to reach the final of the Atlanta Olympic Games.

The Dream Team came from two goals down to beat a star-studded Brazilian side, with Nwankwo Kanu scoring a dramatic late equaliser before netting the golden goal winner.

Brazil made the perfect start when Flávio Conceição opened the scoring in the first minute. Nigeria responded in the 20th minute after Roberto Carlos turned the ball into his own net to make it 1-1.

Bebeto restored Brazil’s lead eight minutes later before Conceição grabbed his second goal in the 38th minute to give the South Americans a commanding 3-1 advantage at half-time.

Just four minutes into the additional period, Kanu struck again with the golden goal to complete a famous 4-3 victory and send Nigeria into the Olympic final, where the Dream Team went on to win the country’s first-ever football gold medal.

Man United team vs Atletico Madrid predicted as Shea Lacey starts and JJ Gabriel call made

Published

on

Manchester United return to the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm this afternoon to take on Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United’s pre-season preparations will step up a gear this afternoon when they take on La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. On paper, Diego Simeone’s side provide the toughest test yet for the Reds and Michael Carrick will be hopeful his players are equal to the challenge.

Altay Bayindir returned to Carrington this week and has made it into the travelling squad. While his future is in doubt, the Reds could look to put him in the shop window against Atletico and he will be expecting to start. Ahead of him, Carrick will likely persist with playing Leny Yoro at right-back, in the absence of Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui.

If Yoro is at full-back, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven should play in the centre with Luke Shaw in his familiar left-back role. Just ahead of them, it is a chance to see the blossoming partnership of Andrey Santos and Mason Mount against tough opposition.

Santos has impressed in his opening two games for United but his defensive skills should be tested more against Atleti. Mount is also enjoying a positive pre-season and it will be interesting to see him play that deeper role against a Champions League rival.

All eyes will be on JJ Gabriel to see if he starts. Carrick has cut the travelling group down to 23, and the 15-year-old is thought of highly by the head coach but after not playing a minute against Rosenborg, it seems unlikely the teenager will get the nod to start this one. Instead, Patrick Dorgu should continue to state his claim on the left wing, in the absence of Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford.

Amad has also returned to Carrington and has travelled for this game but, unlike Bayindir, it is expected Carrick will be more cautious with the 24-year-old. Playing on the wing is more physically demanding than in goal and the last thing United want is an avoidable injury.

Carrick surprised a few fans last week when he opted to start Shea Lacey down the middle. That decision was soon justified by the teenager and we should see him given another chance today. If Lacey can have the same impact as last week, that will give Carrick food for thought.

Benjamin Sesko’s absence means Joshua Zirkzee should lead the line. Like Bayindir, United will be hoping the Dutchman’s performance will drum up interest in him.

United’s predicted line-up vs Atletico Madrid: Bayindir; Yoro, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Santos, Mount; Mbeumo, Lacey, Dorgu; Zirkzee

on

India will enter the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Saturday with one of its busiest medal schedules of the Games, as athletes across athletics, boxing, judo, para athletics, track cycling and bowls look to add to the country’s growing tally in Glasgow.

Following a historic Friday that saw India script history in judo with its first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medals through Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh, Saturday promises another action-packed day featuring medal contenders across multiple disciplines.

Athletics will once again command attention with finals in the men’s triple jump, men’s pole vault, men’s 5000m, women’s 10,000m race walk and the mixed 4x400m relay, while India will also chase medals in para athletics. The biggest attraction, however, will be boxing, where 10 Indian pugilists will compete in gold medal bouts.

Boxing presents 10 gold opportunities

Saturday could prove to be India’s biggest day in the boxing ring, with all 10 finalists aiming to convert their assured silver medals into gold.

The afternoon session begins with Preeti Pawar taking on Canada’s Scarlett Savannah Delgado in the women’s 54kg final, followed by reigning world champion Jaismine Lamboria against Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh in the women’s 57kg title clash.

Jadumani Singh will then face Australia’s Jye Dixon in the men’s 55kg final before the evening session gets underway.

The final stretch of the day features Sachin Siwach against Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo in the men’s 60kg final, Ankush Panghal versus England’s Dimeji Shittu in the men’s 80kg final, and heavyweight Narender Berwal taking on England’s Damar Thomas in the men’s 90+kg final.

With 10 gold medal bouts on the schedule, boxing could deliver India’s biggest medal haul of the Games.

Athletics looks to add more medals

India’s athletics contingent has another opportunity to strengthen the medal tally with multiple finals spread throughout the day.

The action begins with the men’s triple jump final, where Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran will look to translate strong qualification performances into podium finishes.

In the women’s 10,000m race walk, Priyanka Goswami and Ravina Gayakwad will aim to challenge for medals before attention shifts to the men’s pole vault final later in the evening, featuring Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar.

Distance runner Gulveer Singh returns for the men’s 5000m final after already winning silver in the 10,000m earlier in the Games and will be eyeing another podium finish.

India’s athletics campaign concludes with the mixed 4x400m relay final, where Vishal TK, Rajesh Ramesh, Rashdeep Kaur and Neeru Pathak will look to finish the day on a high.

Fresh judo campaign begins after historic golds

After celebrating an unprecedented double gold through Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh, Indian judo begins another medal quest on Saturday.

Unnati Sharma, Karanjit Singh Maan, Harsh Tokas and Inunganbi Takhellambam will all begin their campaigns in their respective weight categories.

Should they progress through the elimination rounds and quarterfinals, semifinal contests await later in the evening, keeping alive India’s hopes of extending its memorable run in judo.

Para athletics offers early medal hopes

India’s medal hunt begins early through para athletics.

Shubham Juyal and Soman Rana compete in the men’s F57 shot put final, while Ramesh Shanmugam lines up in the men’s 1500m T54 final.

Both events provide India with early opportunities to climb the medal standings before the afternoon schedule gathers pace.

Cyclists target knockout progression

Track cycling begins with David Beckham Elkatohchoongo, Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam and Rojit Singh Yanglem competing in the men’s sprint qualification.

The trio will need to negotiate the knockout rounds to reach the semifinals and medal races later in the day.

Later, Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh Sekhon contest the men’s 10km scratch race qualification, with the final scheduled for the night should either rider progress.

Bowls pair eyes semifinal berth

India’s men’s pairs combination of Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar faces England in a crucial sectional play encounter.

With both teams unbeaten, the contest is effectively a virtual quarterfinal as only the group winners advance to the semifinals, which are scheduled later the same night.

Meanwhile, Nayanmoni Saikia continues her women’s singles campaign against South Africa’s Bridget Herselman as she looks to move closer to the knockout stage.

Red Sox rally to beat Dodgers, finish July with record of 21-4

Published

on

LOS ANGELES — Ceddane Rafaela’s go-ahead two-run homer highlighted a five-run seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox rallied after blowing an early lead to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-4 on Friday night in the series opener.

The Red Sox led 3-0 in the third before the Dodgers scored a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth on Shohei Ohtani’s two-run, two-out blast to take a 4-3 lead.

The Red Sox finished July with a 21-4 record. The .840 win percentage is the best in a month in franchise history (minimum 15 games).

Ohtani was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs a night after sitting out because of lingering soreness in his left knee that has kept the two-way superstar off the mound since July 3.

Dodgers reliever Cole Irvin (0-1) gave up a leadoff walk to Nick Sogard in the fifth. Rafaela followed with a 405-foot shot to left that put the Red Sox back in front, 5-4.

Andruw Monasterio’s two-run RBI double and Jarren Duran’s RBI groundout to Irvin extended the lead to 8-4.

Irvin gave up six runs and eight hits over six innings of relief with five strikeouts in his first outing in the majors since 2024. He had his Triple-A contract selected earlier in the day.

Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Dodgers reliever Will Klein in the third and left the game for precautionary reasons.

Boston reliever Brayan Bello (3-6) got the win with three hits over four innings.

Ohtani’s 24th homer came off reliever Jovani Morán. The left-hander had just entered after starter Ranger Suárez gave up an RBI single to Eliezer Alfonzo.

Freddie Freeman went 3 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games — longest by a Dodger this season — with a two-out RBI single that scored Ohtani in the fourth.

Red Sox LHP Payton Tolle (6-6, 3.32 ERA) was set to start Saturday against Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (11-6, 2.72).

Big Ten, SEC voice support for Protect College Sports Act, breathing new life into landmark legislation

Published

on

The long-awaited and deeply debated Protect College Sports Act was hanging by a thread Thursday night. By Friday morning, it had a pulse, and by the end of the night, one of the senators heavily involved in the negotiations, Sen. Eric Schmitt, was celebrating with a cold Busch Light.

The Big Ten and SEC, the two conferences whose silence had threatened to sink the Protect College Sports Act before the August congressional recess, voted to support the sweeping bipartisan legislation Friday on separate calls with their presidents and chancellors.

“Glad to have their support, ” Sen. Ted Cruz, co-author of the bill, said late Friday night. “Now it’s time to get the bill through Congress and on to President Trump’s desk. Let’s save college sports.”

The support came after a day of grinding negotiations that produced the one thing the conferences had been waiting for: the right language to prevent schools from circumventing the revenue-sharing cap by routing money to athletes through corporate sponsors and multimedia rights partners.

Schmitt, a Missouri Republican who co-authored the bill alongside Cruz of Texas and Maria Cantwell of Washington, was in the middle of it all.

It started with the White House. The Trump administration sent an unmistakable signal Friday morning, urging passage of the bill and adding institutional pressure to a process that had stalled overnight, sources told CBS Sports. Congressional staff, conference leaders and lawmakers had been grinding through the associated entities provision for days, and the calendar was running out.

The central sticking point, as CBS Sports reported, was the associated entities language, the provision designed to prevent circumvention of the revenue-sharing cap through arrangements with school-affiliated corporate sponsors and multimedia companies.

“You wanted to sort of head off ways to circumvent that, this kind of redirection that’s happened where it’s a wink and a nod,” Schmitt told CBS Sports. “Don’t give us the money, give it to players X, Y, and Z, and it never really shows up. That’s how you end up with football rosters that are like double or triple potentially what the number is.”

The fix: an attestation requirement from outside entities, apparel companies and multimedia rights partners, certifying that deals with individual players are separate from any institutional arrangement and subject to the Collegiate Sports Commission’s review process.

The language went back and forth through the day. When it finally landed, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey brought Schmitt onto the call with SEC presidents and chancellors to help push it across the goal line.

The Big Ten and SEC each voted yes. Both conferences released a joint statement: “The Big Ten Conference and Southeastern Conference support the Protect College Sports Act as currently drafted, following detailed and productive negotiations with Senators Cruz, Cantwell and Schmitt and their respective staffs. We appreciate the substantial work that has gone into this effort.”

One of the provisions effectively increased the revenue-share cap: $21.3 million in revenue sharing from the House settlement, plus a $22.5 million retention pool exception and an additional $5 million for non-revenue sports NIL. In total, schools can pay players as much as $48.8 million annually.

Schmitt said the market essentially validated where negotiations landed. The Big Ten and SEC initially asked for $25 million. Earlier, Notre Dame’s Pete Bevacqua was asked if collectives were eliminated with a hard cap, what would the number be?

“The number was $50 million,” Schmitt said. “And as it turns out, that’s kind of where we ended up. That’s sort of where the market is. So if you’re SEC or Big Ten, you’re going to have schools that are above that. You’re going to have schools that are below that. That’s probably about the mean. It isn’t so far out of reach that ACC, Big 12 or even Group of Six is going to be a challenge.”

The bill reaches well beyond money.

On the field, it locks in protections for women’s and Olympic sports that conference leaders and university presidents have long demanded. The NCAA and Division I conferences would be prohibited from reducing the number of varsity teams, minimum roster participants or intercollegiate competitions schools must sponsor for FBS membership.

For athletes, the bill guarantees one transfer without losing eligibility and establishes specific exceptions for additional transfers.

The bill also takes direct aim at the coaching carousel. Football coaches and key staff would be prohibited from leaving mid-season to effectively take over another FBS program, whether through recruiting, roster management, NIL activity or game-planning.

On media, the bill creates a targeted antitrust exemption allowing schools and conferences to voluntarily pool and sell their media rights, mirroring the framework that exists for professional sports leagues, but only if 75% of current FBS schools agree – practically all membership outside the Big Ten and SEC.

The bill also effectively caps conference expansion among the most powerful conferences to 19 teams, which means the Big Ten can only add one more program.

A late addition this week, Title III, addresses Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ access to the growing college sports media landscape, though the specific text had not been made public as of Friday. The provision caught some conference leaders off guard earlier this week, sources said.

Reaction to the news Friday was swift across Washington, D.C. and the high-major conferences in college sports.

“Good. Now progress can be made in protecting women and Olympic athletes and moving this legislation closer to the President’s desk,” Sen. Maria Cantwell, one of the bill’s authors, said in a statement.

The Big 12 and ACC, the other two big conferences in the Power Four, supported the bill shortly after its introduction in June. Both reiterated their support in statements Friday night.

“We are encouraged to see the Big Ten and SEC join the Big 12, the ACC and so many others in support of the Protect College Sports Act,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark said. “Broad alignment around a practical, sustainable framework that supports student-athletes, institutions, conferences and fans is an important step forward for college athletics.”

Schmitt was emphatic about the urgency that drove Friday’s breakthrough with the Big Ten and SEC. Members of Congress left the Capitol late Thursday and are not set to return until Sunday for the final session before summer recess begins next Friday. “Once you get past Monday, it’s over,” he said. “So this week and the rest of today, I suppose, was important.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune is expected to file for cloture as early as Monday, with a floor vote potentially as soon as midweek, though the timeline could slip into the weekend beyond the recess date, Schmitt said. Schmitt acknowledged that educating colleagues who haven’t tracked the legislation closely would be part of the work ahead.

“A lot of people will say, hey, what’s going on with this thing? And they’re just not as intricately involved,” Schmitt said. “It’ll give an opportunity now to kind of give the full-fledged sales pitch at the lunches, colleague to colleague. So I think the momentum will grow.”

To Schmitt, the stakes justify every phone call.

“I just think culturally, this is such an everyday thing people care about,” he said. “A lot of things we do up there, people don’t give a shit. But they care about their teams and they care about college football. I just felt like this was important.”

Six weeks before the college football season kicks off, the sport’s most powerful stakeholders finally got to yes. Now the ball is in Congress’ hands.

Galaxy could be most comfortable on counter vs. FC Dallas

The Los Angeles Galaxy may be the home side Saturday night when they face FC Dallas in Carson, Calif., but don’t be surprised if Greg Vanney’s group is content with playing on the counterattack.

That hasn’t been Vanney’s preferred style as a manager across 13 MLS seasons with Toronto FC and then Los Angeles, but it’s the one that has led to the most success recently.

Since April 26, the Galaxy (5-7-6, 21 points) are 3-1-2 in matches where they hold less than 50% of possession, and 0-2-1 in games where they have more than 50%.

Perhaps that makes sense with an attack that has been balanced but not particularly explosive. Four LA players have at least four MLS goals, but Joao Klauss and Gabriel Pec lead the squad with five, and Klauss is injured while Pec is no longer with the squad.

“You can manage 90 minutes by being off the ball a little bit more or you can manage 90 minutes by being on the ball a little bit more,” Vanney said. “Right now, sometimes we look a little more comfortable off the ball managing the larger stretches of the game. But we’ll see how the game plays out.”

There is little doubt that Dallas’ attack runs through center forward Petar Musa, who will be returning from his second MLS All-Star appearance for the Saturday encounter.

Musa shares the MLS lead with 13 goals in 15 appearances for Dallas (7-5-5, 26 points), including a late go-ahead tally in his return from the World Cup in a 2-2 draw against the host Portland Timbers on July 22.

He is on pace to far exceed his career best of 18 goals during the 2025 season and is averaging an elite 1.01 tallies per 90 minutes, the third-highest rate among players still active in the league. (Hugo Cuypers recently transferred from Chicago to CF Monterrey in Mexico.)

Musa, a Croatian international who scored his first World Cup goal in June against England, let himself savor the reward of the All-Star exhibition, including the Tuesday skills contest and Wednesday friendly between a team of MLS stars and a team of Liga MX talent.

“Everything, especially (Tuesday), the skill challenge was fun,” Musa said. “But to meet new players, it’s been great. And we are enjoying each moment.”

Manchester United make decision on exciting French striker

Published

on

Man Utd signed French striker Enzo Kana-Biyik last summer, but he was immediately sent on loan for 2025/2026.

Enzo Kana-Biyik is expected to stay with Manchester United this season amid a mass academy loan operation this summer.

There were 24 players named in the United Under-21 squad for their pre-season friendly against Altrincham on Friday night, and the majority of those players will leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

However, Kana-Biyik is expected to remain with United in the new campaign as he enters the next stage of his development, which means he will play for the U21s and receive first-team exposure in training sessions.

United signed Kana-Biyik on a free transfer from Le Havre last summer before sending him on loan to Ineos-owned FC Lausanne Sport for the season.

The young striker made 26 appearances for Lausanne across all competitions, scoring once in those games, but only six of those were starts.

Kana-Biyik reported to Manchester at the start of July for the beginning of academy pre-season. He was included in the squad for the young Reds’ two friendlies at the Adidas HQ in Germany.

The 19-year-old made his first public appearance in England against Altrincham, coming on at half-time to play on the left wing. Kana-Biyik was replaced after spending 30 minutes on the pitch, as the squad was rotated.

United coaches have been pleased with what they have seen from Kana-Biyik so far.

Kana-Biyik followed in the footsteps of Paul Pogba when he signed for United last year, as Pogba also joined United as a teenager from the renowned Le Havre academy in France.
