Raptors fail test against Kings as DeRozan, Achiuwa burn former team

Published

on

TORONTO — The downside of playing meaningful basketball in the late stage of the NBA season is that you can fail.

They hosted the Sacramento Kings, a team that is last place in the Western Conference, were losers of six of their past seven games and came into the game ranked 26th on offence and 28th on defence.

They are only a couple of years removed from winning 48 and 46 wins in the West, but have crumbled like stale chips since. Their new plan hinges on drafting a star this summer and starting over.

That might work. Their plan for this season — accumulating a collection of past-their-best-years veterans and hoping to extract some asset value at the trade deadline — decidedly didn’t work because no one else in the league wanted the players or the contracts.

Which is how former Raptors DeMar DeRozan and Precious Achiuwa were on hand for the Kings to torture their former team in a game that Sacramento would have been fine with losing and the Raptors very much needed to win.

Achiuwa is a useful player, and DeRozan will have a chance to be in the Hall of Fame when his career winds up. But in each case — at this stage of their careers — the ways they can hurt you are fairly straightforward. Achiuwa is strong, agile and quick and hard to handle when he wants to use all of those gifts. But if he’s kept off the glass, his ability to hurt you is limited.

Well, the sixth-year pro bounced around for 11 offensive rebounds — 19 overall
— and pummelled the Raptors with 28 points, a big night for him considering he was averaging 9.6 points and 6.5 rebounds on the season.

And DeRozan? He’s not the athlete he was when he was posterizing people as a Raptor, but at 36 years old, he’s still a dangerous scorer if you’re not mindful defensively, and in particular about reacting to his feints and fakes designed to draw fouls. The Raptors put him on the free throw line 12 times – he made all 12 – as he scored 26 of his 28 points in the second half.

The result was a 123-115 Kings win that improved them to 20-57 while the Raptors fell to 42-34. The Raptors’ loss, coupled with wins from Atlanta and Philadelphia, dropped Toronto to seventh place as the 76ers — in the sixth and final playoff spot — hold the tiebreaker over Toronto.

Before the tip, Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic was saying the team’s first run for a playoff spot together will depend on a daily focus on the small things they can hope to control, rather than spending too much energy thinking about the desired outcome.

“Really, every game comes down to are we going to play to our standard or not,” said Rajakovic. “… That’s a daily fight, that’s a daily commitment to those things, so we’re really focussing on that and enjoying the process. We’re not looking forward to the post-season and like, hey, that’s the end goal.”

All fair and reasonable. But if you’re dropping games to the Sacramento Kings at home, maybe the process needs work?

“This is a game we’re supposed to win no matter what,” said Raptors wing RJ Barrett, who had 20 points, five rebounds and six assists – but also five turnovers. “Process or no process, we can’t lose this game.”

But they did. They did it by coming out tentatively in the first quarter and falling behind early. They did by giving up an 18-3 run late in the second quarter, immediately after the Raptors themselves had put a 21-3 run on the Kings to take control of the game in the first place. Instead, it was the Kings that led at halftime.

It was like the Raptors didn’t really believe that the Kings were in it to win the game. But they miscalculated. The Kings were rested, having been in Toronto since Sunday night. And the Raptors could reasonably cite fatigue, given then had lost in Detroit the night before.

But that’s the point: the teams that reach their goals — whatever their process — are the ones that fight through the fatigue or the injuries or the inconvenience. The Pistons had beaten the Raptors the night before, having lost in overtime in Oklahoma City on Monday night. They found a way.

The Raptors found a way to lose. They missed 10 free throws, for example, this after missing 11 the night before in Detroit. The Kings were 27-of-29 at the stripe. The Raptors played from behind most of the game, and when the end of the game came, they had no margin for error and got burned.

“There were times when you felt like there was no sense of urgency, until, like, we made it close,” said Raptors big man Sandro Mamukelashvili, who had 17 points and six rebounds off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting. “And then we’d be like, ah, OK, we’re in the game. But we can’t have those slip-ups.”

There were other good performers. Jamal Shead had 16 points and seven assists in 37 minutes, and Collin Murray-Boyles had the first 20-point game of his career in 18 minutes off the bench. But Scottie Barnes took too long to assert himself offensively while playing point guard in place of the injured Immanuel Quickley. His 10 assists extended his streak of games with double-digit assists to six, but Toronto needed more than his 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting. He was also 4-of-8 from the line. Jakob Poeltl couldn’t match Achiuwa’s physicality.

The Raptors let the Kings hang around, maybe hoping they’d just hand the game to them in the end. But instead, Sacramento figured, hey, why not win one for a change?

Toronto gave up 34 points to the Kings in the fourth quarter. They hit four threes and were 11-of-11 from the free throw line.

Fittingly, it was DeRozan’s triple from the corner in front of the Raptors bench that pushed the Kings’ lead to six with 1:05 to play after Toronto had pulled the game within a single possession, and then it was Achiuwa who sealed it with a driving lay-up.

If playing meaningful basketball in March and April, the Raptors’ season to this point has been a success. But how they cope with something on the line will determine their final grade.

A home game against the Kings was supposed to be an open-book test. The Raptors flunked it.

“This one’s frustrating,” said Barrett. “We’ve been fighting hard all year, so you want the reward of making it to the playoffs and fighting for the championship, so nights like tonight, they hurt, especially when we know how much work we put in.

“Especially now after tonight, if we don’t come out and fight with everything we have got for these next couple of games… we have to play like our lives depend on it.”

He’s still a Raptor: Wednesday night’s visit with the Sacramento Kings was DeRozan’s 587th as a non-Raptor. An entire career for a lot of players. But he played nine seasons and 675 games for Toronto. He’s played 63 playoff games in his career
— a total that won’t change after a lost season with the lottery-bound Kings. But 51 of them were as a Raptor, helping the team scale its highest heights until they won the 2019 championship thanks in large part to the return — Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green — the Raptors got in the trade that sent DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs.

But playoff success has eluded him since. Failure too. He hasn’t been in the post-season at all since the Chicago Bulls lost in five games in 2021-22. He lost in the first game when he was with the Spurs in 2018-19. When I spoke with him briefly before the game, he said that his old pal Kyle Lowry is trying to get him to play 20 years, and while DeRozan is durable enough — he’s averaged 76 games his last four seasons and has only missed two so far this season — he’s not sure he’s got three more years in him. Diar — a longtime fixture on the sidelines at Raptors games (and famously cheering against the Raptors) and the oldest of four daughters with his wife, Kiara — is 13 and starting high school next year.

But at the same time, DeRozan is interested in finishing his career off with one more crack on a competitive team. He said he’d be open to a different role – DeRozan has started every game he’s played since the 2009-10 season – if necessary. “If it makes sense,” he said.

In the meantime? He’s made the most of his time with the Kings. He’s averaging 18.5 points a game on 49.5 per cent shooting and still gets to the free-throw line. Kings head coach (and former Raptor) Doug Christie gushed about his reliability and the example he provides to a young team. He passed Dominique Wilkins for 17th place on the NBA all-time scoring list Wednesday. “I mean, it’s always an honour passing the greats that came before me,” DeRozan said. “Especially people I know, you know, I’ve always had a great deal of respect for Dominique, so passing him is definitely cool.” With 26,688 points, DeRozan now trails only LeBron James, Kevin Durant, James Harden and fellow King Russel Westbrook among active scorers.

15th man watch: Wednesday night marked the end of Markelle Fultz’s 10-day contract. It’s expected that the Raptors will sign someone else on a 10-day deal on Thursday. Fultz got into five games for Toronto but didn’t really play any meaningful minutes, which was not encouraging given Quickley was out with plantar fasciitis for all of the six games the Raptors played when Fultz was with them. One name that was circulating as a possibility for a new 10-day was Tyreke Key, who played with Raptors 905 the past two seasons, was on their Summer League team last year and signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Raptors before training camp. The six-foot-two guard out of Tennessee has shot 40.1 per cent from three over 90 G-League starts the past two seasons. If the Raptors do add someone on a 10-day Thursday, they would still be able to sign one of their two-way players to a standard NBA deal on the last day of the regular season (April 12th) and have them eligible for the post-season. For the second game in a row, AJ Lawson was the first Raptors wing off the bench for Darko Rajakovic against the Kings.  “He just needs to continue putting the work in. He already does a lot of great stuff that can help the team. I definitely see him as a player that belongs in the league with a full contract.”

So Precious:  The former Raptors is often the forgotten man in the ‘OG Anunoby trade’ that brought Quickley and RJ Barrett to Toronto midway through the 2023-24 season. Not as forgotten as Malachi Flynn, who is now playing in Turkey, but it can be hard to stay in the spotlight playing on a Kings team that is in tank mode. But Achiuwa has put together a decent season, and he’s finishing strong. Even before his big night at Scotiabank Arena, he averaged 15.4 points and 9.5 assists on 57 per cent shooting over 14 games in March. He’s an unrestricted free agent this summer and could be an intriguing depth big for a lot of teams. His market might be comparable to that of Raptors big Sandro Mamukelashvili, another depth big, albeit with a different skill set. Per league sources, Achiuwa could slot in for something in the six-to-eight-million-dollar range on a short-term deal.

Everton boss David Moyes gives update on Jack Grealish’s future amid injury recovery

Published

on

David Moyes has affirmed Everton’s commitment to winger Jack Grealish, stating the club “will continue doing our best” for him as he rehabilitates from a broken bone in his foot.

Grealish, who has been sidelined since mid-January, is unusually continuing his treatment with the Toffees rather than returning to parent club Manchester City, a common practice for long-term loan injuries.

The 30-year-old has one year remaining on his contract, with Moyes indicating that future plans would be assessed in the summer.

“We’ve got a few plans in place. Finances will obviously play a big part in it so we will need to navigate round the best we can,” Moyes said.

“Obviously we like Jack a lot. We’ve looked after Jack all the time since his injury. It’s looking in good order now, the surgeon speaks very well about it and thinks it’s healing greatly.”

Moyes acknowledged the deviation from standard procedure, adding: “Normally a player would go back to his parent club and be looked after from there, but we will continue doing our best for Jack.

“He is incredibly well liked inside and outside the building but ultimately he is not our player, he is Man City’s player. We’ve had him on loan for a year and I have to say we’ve enjoyed having him.”

Grealish previously spent four years at City after signing for the club for £100 million from Aston Villa in 2021.

The English winger played a key role in City’s 2022-23 campaign when Pep Guardiola’s men won a historic treble.

However, he struggled to find consistent form, leading to him being loaned out to Everton last summer.

Grealish started the season strongly at Hill Dickinson Stadium, swiftly winning the fans over, but his campaign was brought to a premature end when he got injured in January.

The injury ended his hopes of making Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, which was announced on Friday morning.

The German boss named Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford as his left wingers, with Eberechi Eze also providing cover in this position.

In other news, Moyes also revealed that the club is “very close” to finalising a contract extension for left-back Vitalii Mykolenko.

United confirmed that Carrick would remain as the club’s head coach on a long-term basis on Friday, having successfully guided the Reds to Champions League qualification.

Carrick has signed a two-year contract to be United’s permanent boss, and will take charge of the club’s final match of the season away at Brighton on Sunday.

According to SportItalia journalist Michele Criscitiello, a deal for United to sign Ederson from Atalanta is ‘almost closed’

The report claims that the fee for the deal will be €50million (£43million), with the move on the verge of being completed, although it’s not been stated how long a contract Ederson would sign after becoming a United player.

Ederson has made 41 appearances for Atalanta this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists and helping the club occupy seventh place in the Serie A table with one match left to play.

It remains to be seen which other players could go on to sign for United, with the club now having more clarity on the future after Carrick was confirmed as the club’s new manager.

Gervonta Davis targeted comeback fight reportedly now off as opponent looks elsewhere

Published

on

Gervonta Davis could be forced to adjust his comeback strategy, with his targeted opponent reportedly ruling himself out of their mooted showdown.

The 31-year-old has not fought since March 2025, back when he retained his WBA world lightweight title with a controversial draw against Lamont Roach.

Many felt Roach was unfortunate not to emerge victorious, especially after flooring ‘Tank’ in round nine before referee Steve Willis ruled the incident a no-knockdown.

Following talks of an immediate rematch, Davis was then set to face Jake Paul in an exhibition match last November, only for allegations of domestic violence to remove him from the opportunity.

Since then, the American has been made WBA ‘champion in recess’, yet it remains unclear whether he will look to reclaim his old lightweight belt.

Instead, it appeared far more likely that he would return against Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, whom he unanimously outpointed back in 2021.

This time, it was reported that the pair would meet later this year at 140lbs towards the end of the summer, only now it seems that ‘Pitbull’ is exploring alternative options.

Taking to social media, boxing journalist Abraham Gonzalez said Cruz has joined forces with Canelo Alvarez trainer Eddy Reynoso, with whom he is expected to face a different opponent than Davis.

Gonzalez said that Cruz may look to reignite the rivalry after getting one fight with Reynoso in his corner under his belt. Whether ‘Tank’ waits around remains to be seen, but there are several other options available.

As the leading contender for his old WBA title at 135lbs, Floyd Schofield has urged ‘Tank’ to fight him instead of Vasyl Lomachenko.

With Lomachenko expected to make a comeback later this year, though, it is likely that Davis would view the Ukrainian as a more lucrative option, and perhaps look to restart the talks they were engaged in before ‘Loma’s retirement.

Manchester United hands Michael Carrick two-year contract as head coach

Published

on

MANCHESTER, England — Michael Carrick has been handed a two-year contract by Manchester United after passing his audition for the job of head coach with flying colors.

United confirmed on Friday that Carrick — who replaced the fired Ruben Amorim on a temporary basis in January — would become its seventh permanent manager since the retirement of club icon Alex Ferguson in 2013.

“Throughout the past five months we’ve shown what our club represents — resilience togetherness and a determination to succeed. Now it’s about moving forward again with ambition and purpose,” Carrick said. “This club and our supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honors and we’re never going to stop.”

Carrick has transformed United’s fortunes, securing qualification for the Champions League and standout wins against Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

His record in his short spell stands at 11 wins in 16 games, with only two losses, and he has steered the team to third in the Premier League after it finished 15th last term — a record low in the modern era.

While there is still uncertainty as to whether he can be the long-term solution for United after more than a decade of decline post-Ferguson, his impact made it nearly impossible for the club’s hierarchy to overlook him.

“Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team. In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history,” said United director of football Jason Wilcox, who led the search for the club’s next coach.

As a multiple titlewinner with United as a player, Carrick had the support of fans and club icons, who called for him to be given the job on a permanent basis. He also inspired an upturn of form in key players like Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko.

Yet he is a novice coach at the top level. His only previous full-time managerial experience was at second-tier Middlesbrough from 2022-25.

United has been convinced he is up to the job long term, having given itself time to assess other candidates since he was appointed in January. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner were among potential contenders to take up a role that proved too much for a succession of managers.

“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated,” said Wilcox. “He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build.”

Wilcox has put his faith in Carrick after his predecessor Amorim lasted just 14 months, despite arriving with a reputation as one of the top emerging coaches in Europe.

Carrick is the latest to be charged with the responsibility of bringing the good times back to United in the post-Ferguson era after David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and Amorim.

He was part of one of Ferguson’s greatest teams, which won a Premier League and Champions League double in 2008. In all he won 12 major trophies in 12 years at United including five league titles.

He was in United’s last title-winning team in Ferguson’s final season.

The list of predecessors to Carrick is evidence of the varying attempts United has made to try to return to the summit of English soccer.

It went down the route of the top tier, tried and tested in the form of serial winners Van Gaal and Mourinho, but neither could deliver the Premier League title.

David Moyes was a well-established top-flight manager, while both Ten Hag and Amorim came in as title winners from overseas.

None have reached the standards required.

Solskjaer was an iconic player — part of the club’s DNA — and despite having the affection of the fans ultimately came up short.

“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride,” Carrick said.

St. George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

St George Illawarra will be desperate to finally break through for its first win of the season when it hosts an in-form New Zealand Warriors outfit at Jubilee Stadium on Saturday. The Dragons’ difficult campaign continued in Magic Round with a heavy loss to Penrith, extending their losing streak to 14 matches as pressure continues to build around the club. Injuries have not helped, with Moses Suli sidelined again, although Jaydn Su’A returns from suspension and adds some much-needed experience to the backline. In stark contrast, the Warriors arrive full of confidence after dismantling Brisbane for a fifth consecutive victory to cement their place near the top of the ladder. However, the win came with a major setback after halfback Tanah Boyd suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Even with several Origin absentees, New Zealand still boasts impressive depth and has dominated this matchup recently, winning four of the past five meetings against the Dragons.

MANILA, Philippines—Barangay Ginebra weathered a late storm from Rain or Shine to pull out a 109-101 victory in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals at Mall of Asia Arena on Friday.

After absorbing a heartbreaking 115-111 loss in Game 1, the Gin Kings bounced back to even the best-of-seven series at 1-1.

“They played their style again, they kept the pace up,” coach Tim Cone said.

“It came down in the fourth and gave themselves a chance to win, we played right into it and it’s hard not to because they come at you in a lot of ways… It’s very difficult because we overplayed Justin (Brownlee), Troy (Rosario) and Scottie (Thompson) so from a coaching standpoint, I expected them to do that.”

Japeth Aguilar scored inside midway through the fourth quarter to give Ginebra what seemed to be a comfortable 98-78 lead.

But the Elasto Painters refused to fold, unloading a 19-3 run capped by a triple from Jaylen Johnson to trim the deficit to 101-97 with 1:37 remaining.

Scottie Thompson calmly knocked down two free throws to push the lead back to six, 103-97, before Jhonard Clarito answered with two freebies of his own to keep Rain or Shine within striking distance, 103-99, with under 40 seconds left.

Troy Rosario, however, got free underneath for the dagger basket that gave the Gin Kings a decisive 105-99 cushion with 23 seconds to go en route to the win.

Justin Brownlee flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 31 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for Ginebra.

Pep Guardiola to Leave Manchester City After Final Game of the Season

Published

on

Manchester City have confirmed that manager Pep Guardiola will leave the club after Sunday’s final match of the season.

Guardiola has enjoyed a hugely successful spell at City, winning 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles in 10 seasons in charge of the club.

The 55-year-old will take charge of his final game when City face Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Reports from BBC Sport on Monday said the club had already started making plans for Guardiola’s departure, even though he still had one year left on his contract.

“Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving,” said Guardiola. “There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time.

“Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.”

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked under Guardiola at City, is believed to be the leading candidate to replace him.

The announcement came only three days after City lost the 2025/26 Premier League title to Arsenal.

City’s draw against AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday confirmed Arsenal as league champions for the first time in 22 years.

Guardiola first agreed to join City in February 2016, replacing Manuel Pellegrini ahead of the 2016/17 season.

Although he failed to win a trophy in his first season and also ended last season empty-handed, his side dominated English football for most of his time at the club.

City became the first Premier League team to reach 100 points in a season during the 2017/18 campaign. They also scored a record 106 goals that season.

In the 2022/23 season, Guardiola guided City to a historic Treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in the same campaign. They became only the second English club after Manchester United to achieve the feat.

City also made history by becoming the first team to win four straight English league titles after lifting the trophy again in the 2023/24 season.

Despite stepping down as manager, City said Guardiola would remain connected to the club as a global ambassador for the City Football Group.

Before joining City, Guardiola spent three years at Bayern Munich, where he won three Bundesliga titles and two German Cups.

He began his coaching career at FC Barcelona in 2008, building one of the greatest club teams in football history. During his time there, he won three La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies and two Copa del Rey titles.

As a player, Guardiola also enjoyed a successful career at Barcelona, winning six La Liga titles and the 1991/92 European Cup. He also captained Spain national football team to Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Games before retiring from football in 2006.

Indian legend launches sharp criticism at Sai Sudharsan despite holding Orange Cap in IPL 2026

Published

on

Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin feels Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Sai Sudharsan should learn to accelerate towards the back end of the innings. He opined that the southpaw needed to improve to match the demands of modern-day T20 cricket.

Sudharsan has shown terrific form in IPL 2026 and is currently the Orange Cap holder. The opening batter has amassed 638 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 157.92. Speaking about the 24-year-old’s batting style, Ashwin remarked in his YouTube video:

“I want to praise Shubman Gill’s batting. He has put in a lot of effort and has shown great intent in the powerplay. I wouldn’t say the same thing about Sai Sudharsan. Sai Sudharsan plays conventional cricket, but capitalizes later on. I still think Sai Sudharsan needs to accelerate towards the end of the innings. T20 cricket has changed. He can do a lot more.”

Sudharsan shone with the bat in GT’s 89-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad on Thursday, May 21. He played a brilliant 84-run knock off 53 balls. Ashwin noted that the talented batter hit a four over mid-off after stepping out of the crease against Anshul Kamboj.

The former cricketer praised Sudharsan’s ability to upset the rhythm of the bowlers. He stated:

“He is not one of your modern-day T20 batters, but the way he used his feet today was good to see. He stepped out and hit Anshul Kamboj’s first ball over mid-off in the powerplay. He doesn’t hit straight that often, but today, he played his first lofted shot there.

“It would have been a catch had the mid-off been straighter, but we should praise him because this guy does something or the other to upset the rhythm of the bowlers. He doesn’t have power; he is not a powerful T20 hitter, he bats conventionally, but by using his brain, by running two, or by playing good shots, he upsets the bowler.”

With the comprehensive win over CSK, the Shubman Gill-led GT have secured a top-two finish in IPL 2026.

“He has not unlocked his full potential yet” – R Ashwin on Shubman Gill’s batting exploits in IPL 2026

R Ashwin lauded GT skipper Shubman Gill for changing his powerplay approach. He pointed out that the right-handed batter has played attacking cricket right from the outset.

However, Ashwin suggested that Gill has yet to unlock his full potential as a batter. He said in the same video:

“There is a huge difference in his powerplay intent. The volume of runs has always been there and is in the Orange Cap list, but he’s shown us that he can play with intent. I am still saying that it is 60-70 percent maximum. He has not unlocked his full potential yet. He is a special batter and can do more.”

Gill is the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2026. He has scored 616 runs from 13 innings with a strike rate of 161.67.
