The five extra England players called up by Thomas Tuchel to help prepare for World Cup friendlies

Published

on

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Alex Scott, Josh King, Rio Ngumoha and Ethan Nwaneri will join up with the England squad for two warm-up friendlies ahead of the World Cup.

Tuchel has named his 26-man squad for the tournament in North America, but not all of those included will be able to be integrated immediately as they conclude their club seasons.

Arsenal’s quartet – Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke – will be involved in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on 30 May and will have a delayed arrival into camp, while Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson is set to feature in the Conference League decider on 27 May.

England will travel to Florida to prepare for the tournament, with friendlies scheduled against New Zealand and Costa Rica on 6 and 10 June respectively.

To ensure he has a full squad to pick from and manage the minutes of a number of key players, Tuchel has moved to bring four youngsters and one experienced professional into his squad to build out numbers in and around the friendlies and training.

Nwaneri, 19, has been drafted in after he spent the second half of the season on loan at Ligue 1 Marseille.

Bournemouth’s Scott has enjoyed an excellent season and was included in the 55-man longlist for England’s World Cup selection, while Fulham midfielder King and Liverpool winger Ngumoha have also shown signs of real promise in the Premier League.

A statement on England’s official X account said: “Ethan Nwaneri will join our Three Lions preparation camp in Florida ahead of the FIFA World Cup.”

The teenager made 12 senior appearances for the Gunners this season before heading for France, where he made a further 10, six of them from the bench.

Additionally, Tuchel confirmed that Brighton’s Jason Steele will be with the squad as a training goalkeeper having operated in a similar role previously.

“We will take some young players out who will train with us and keep the squad at the size we need so we have all the possibilities for the two friendly matches to take care about the minutes and load of the players,” Tuchel explained.

“Alex Scott is confirmed, Rio Ngumoha is confirmed, and Josh King, and there will be one more player which we cannot name because it has not been confirmed yet.

“I am happy that these guys are with us, especially Alex who was on the list of 55 and had a disappointing phone call as well that he didn’t make the first cut. But the reaction of him was outstanding, the commimtment and wish to be in pre-camp and be a step closer to the team – it was not even a question for him. It showed me his character and his spirit and I am delighted he is with us because it was close call. He gets a chance to take a step closer and get a cap.”

The England squad, minus those players involved in European finals, is due to meet up in Palm Beach on June 1.

Tuchel’s men will play two warm-up fixtures – against New Zealand in Tampa and Costa Rica in Orlando – before moving to their tournament base in Kansas City on June 13.

England open their Group L campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17 and will then face Ghana in Boston six days later before their final group clash with Panama in New Jersey on June 27.

Jamie Carragher explains why exiting Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has overtaken Sir Alex Ferguson as greatest ever manager

Published

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has explained why departing Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is the greatest manager of all time, ahead of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Pep Guardiola is set to leave Manchester City after a trophy-laden 10-year spell, having accumulated 20 trophies during his decade-long stint with the club. Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United in 2013, after a 27-year stint, where he won 38 trophies with the club.

Writing in his column on The Telegraph, Carragher explained why Guardiola has overtaken Ferguson as the greatest manager. He claimed that Guardiola’s achievements at Man City have set him apart from Sir Alex, he said:

“No Premier League champion collected more points than Guardiola at City, who set new standards breaking the 100-point barrier in 2017-18. No other manager won four consecutive English league titles. And, in this country, only Bob Paisley won so much in such little time.

“Guardiola arrived in England with Manchester City far behind United and Liverpool on the honours board, having won 18 trophies before 2016. By adding a further 20, Guardiola has changed English football forever, cementing City as giants, synonymous with a beautiful brand of football that each of his successors will be judged against.”

He then added that Guardiola’s teams’ performances over Ferguson’s in the recent past give him the edge over the Scotsman. He took the example of Barcelona‘s UEFA Champions League triumphs over Manchester United in 2009 and 2011.

“Ferguson’s greatest United team was well beaten 2-0 by Guardiola’s Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final. Two years later, the La Liga champions delivered the masterclass which changed how football has been played across every level for the past 15 years, outclassing a fine United team 3-1.”

Carragher praises Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola for rebuilding his squad amid Sir Alex Ferguson comparisons

Carragher also admitted Pep Guardiola has done a stellar job in rebuilding multiple Manchester City squads amid arguments from naysayers claiming Sir Alex Ferguson built multiple PL title-winning sides. He said:

“Another argument used to back Ferguson is that he built several teams to claim his many Premier League titles.

It is an overlooked aspect of Guardiola’s reign how often he seamlessly replaced some of the greatest footballers to play in England and keep the winning machine going; Yaya Touré, Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Agüero departed, and still the titles came. He leaves a City team who have recovered from the loss of arguably the greatest of all Guardiola’s City players, Kevin De Bruyne.”
