Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has scored a remarkable 23 goals in as many appearances in the U18 Premier League this season
Manchester United academy star JJ Gabriel has thanked the club’s youth staff for keeping him humble after he won the Under-18s Premier League player of the season award. The 15-year-old is proving to be an exciting prospect for the Reds having flourished this season for the academy.
His 23 goals in as many U18s Premier League appearances have put him firmly on supporters’ radars. Meanwhile, his three goals and an assist in five FA Youth Cup games have helped United reach tonight’s final against City at the Joie Stadium. Due to Premier League restrictions, Gabriel has been unable to play for the first team.
However, from next season United can select him if they wish to do so. This would further strengthen comparisons between Gabriel and Arsenal sensation Max Dowman who has enjoyed a breakout campaign for the Gunners. But the teenager is not letting outside talk become a distraction.

Speaking to MUTV on the honour, Gabriel insisted Darren Fletcher and his support staff have kept his feet firmly on the ground. “I’m delighted to win this award,” he said. “I thank my coaches and teammates for helping me win this amazing award. Since we came together as the Under-18s, we’ve become a very good team.
“Everyone looks out for each other and we all work hard for each other. I think we’ve had a very good season.” He added: “I’d say [the academy] helped me mature a lot. They help me to be very humble and keep my feet on the ground.
“I’m delighted to be working with him [Fletcher], he’s an amazing coach and has helped me so much this season to become a better player and the best version of myself. I’ve got to say you’ve got to maintain working out on the training pitch every single day, giving it my all and working hard in the gym to stay fit and not get injured.
“My family have helped me a lot, through tough times and good times. They come to all my matches, no matter how far or close, and I love them to bits.”
Gabriel is expected to start tonight when United make the trip across Manchester for the FA Youth Cup final. The build-up to the academy showpiece has been marred by complaints from the Reds about the host venue.
Normally, the host club’s senior stadium will be used for the final. As City were drawn as the home team, that would have been the Etihad Stadium.
However, due to construction work on the new North Stand, a request was made to move the fixture to the significantly smaller Joie Stadium that holds a capacity of 7,000. This was agreed by the FA with United fans handed just 1,000 tickets for the game.
