Unai Emery the man with the plan as Aston Villa reach Europa League final

Published

on

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery admitted his side executed the perfect plan after they earned a dominant 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest to overturn a first-leg deficit and reach the Europa League final.

Chris Wood’s penalty in the first leg gave Vitor Pereira’s side the edge heading into the second leg but Ollie Watkins levelled the aggregate scores with the opener in the 36th minute.

Forest failed to deliver the type of performance that saw them go 10 games unbeaten and they went behind in the tie 13 minutes after the interval courtesy of Emi Buendia’s penalty before John McGinn’s double sealed a 4-1 aggregate win and a trip to Istanbul on May 20.

Villa are through to their first European final in 44 years where they will face German side Freiburg as Emery hunts a fifth Europa League title, having won three with Sevilla and one with Villarreal.

He told a press conference: “At Villa Park we were expecting something different.

“Today we tried to prepare better, push with the players and we did it. We were focusing on what we needed to improve and the players responded fantastic. How we won the match was in the plan we had.

“They were so focused. It was the only match we played with this circumstances, semi-final, we did two years ago in Conference League but we played the second leg away. Now we can feel happy and proud.”

The Prince of Wales was in attendance and even joined in celebrations inside the dressing room afterwards.

Emery added: “He was in the dressing room with the players and with me, and of course he is so happy as well.”

Villa will quickly switch their attention back to the Premier League where they have three games to secure their place in the Champions League next term.

Emery said: “We still have a final to play. We can win and we can lose the final and if we lose we have achieved nothing.

“We need the Premier League. We need to try and focus on the match on Sunday to get Champions League positions and hopefully we can get it in the Premier League and then the final.”

Nottingham Forest were unable to cling on to their first-leg advantage and were beaten for the first time since a 1-0 defeat to Midtjylland in this competition in March.

Forest, who were without Morgan Gibbs-White, will now look to secure their Premier League status this weekend with a home fixture against Newcastle.

Pereira said: “If you look at our bench today we brought three players in condition to play and three players injured, three boys from the academy and Murillo with a risk to play.

“In the end, I’m proud of my team and players, of our supporters, but today we came without conditions to compete for the final. Difficult conditions for us.

“They tried everything but we didn’t have the solutions. It was a tough result but it was a long road till the semi-final.

“A sad and difficult day but we need to look for the future. It is difficult to compete at this level every three days losing players.”

“We Were Under Pressure”: Rishabh Pant Explains Key Tactical Call That Could’ve Backfired

Captain Rishabh Pant said Lucknow Super Giants’ win over defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru meant a lot to the struggling side as they finally snapped a six-match losing streak in the ongoing IPL here on Thursday. LSG ended their barren run with a nine-run DLS victory in a rain-interrupted 19-overs-a-side contest, which also marked their first home win in five matches this season. “It was a good game for us for sure. For the whole team it means a lot. We have been trying lot of things. Coming to the same page means a lot for us. It’s been a tough season but some times you have to go through the grind.

“Definitely we were trying to put together a perfect game where batting and bowling comes together,” Pant said.

Talking about picking Digvesh Rathi for the final over while defending 20 runs, Pant said: “It was a tough call. We were under pressure. Rathi was the right matchup for (Romario) Shepherd.” He also had words of appreciation for centurion Mitchell Marsh.

“Unbelievable (Marsh innings). We know that as a team we’ve been grinding hard. Our strength this season has been bowling, the way all the bowlers have put their heart out. There has been some good things as a bowling unit, and looking forward to that.” RCB captain Rajat Patidar said they were well on course of the target but fell two-three hits behind.

“We were pretty sure how to go about the target. Boys played well and the way we stretched this game, just one or two shots behind. It was really good batting track. Was coming nicely on the bat. Difficult to analyse just after the game, need some time to analyse it.” The loss meant RCB missed the opportunity to go on top of the table.

“We have four games more, just taking one game at a time, one step at a time.” Patidar too praised Marsh for his 56-ball 111 that laid the foundation for LSG’s score.

“Mitchell Marsh was beautiful, the way he played. Kept us under pressure. I was confused about the bowlers – who should I bowl to Mitchell Marsh just after the powerplay. The way we played, that was really good intent showed by all batsmen. Everyone is looking confident and in a great space of mind,” he said.

John Cena has confirmed that the news he will announce at WWE Backlash will shake the very foundations of the company. The star has been teasing the announcement for some time, but has now confirmed that everything will change after he shares the news with fans at the event.

He said he was standing outside the arena where Backlash will take place, and that the announcement he would make there in just a few days will “shock the very foundations” of the company. He went on to say that it would not only affect fans but also everyone from the company’s champions to the rookies.

He demanded that fans not miss Backlash, saying he was very excited about it and would see everyone then.

“WWE Universe, John Cena here. Standing in Thunder Alley, outside Benchmark International Arena in Tampa Bay. In just a few days, I have a major announcement inside this building that will shock the very foundations of WWE. From the fans to its superstars, from the champions, down to its rookies, I am so grateful that Tampa is allowing me the place to make the announcement. Thank you, WWE, see it live on ESPN in the States and on Netflix around the world, but don’t miss Backlash. I’m so excited and I will see you then.”

Cena retired last year, and it was then promoted as his last-ever appearance. However, that has proven false since then, with the star hosting WrestleMania and now even announcing things on Backlash.

While he’s done wrestling, it seems the star isn’t going to be done with appearances in this new role for quite some time; he seems to be working for the company.
