US Open 2026 results: Aryna Sabalenka’s win over Kamilla Rakhimova interrupted by cannabis smell

Aryna Sabalenka briefly halted her US Open match against Kamilla Rakhimova because of a strong smell of cannabis before cruising into the fourth round in New York.

Top seed Sabalenka raised the issue after going 3-0 up in the first set against Uzbekistan’s Rakhimova, telling umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore that “someone is smoking weed”.

The Belarusian asked the umpire to intervene “because it’s so strong”.

Asderaki-Moore spoke to an official on her radio and made a smoking gesture to someone behind her, before play continued.

Two-time defending champion Sabalenka went on to secure a confident 6-3 6-4 victory on Louis Armstrong Stadium as she chases a fifth Grand Slam singles title.

Sabalenka is not the first player at this year’s US Open to complain about smelling cannabis on court at Flushing Meadows.

Last week, Britain’s Katie Boulter said it was distracting, while Harriet Dart and Francesca Jones also noticed the smell.

In previous years players including Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev have also complained.

Smoking is not permitted on site at Flushing Meadows but the smell of cannabis sometimes wafts on to court from the nearby Corona Park.

It is legal to smoke it in New York for adults aged 21 and over.

Victory marked Sabalenka’s 16th straight win at Flushing Meadows as she bids to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2012-2014 to complete a hat-trick of US Open singles titles.

The 28-year-old showcased her trademark power from the start against Rakhimova, dropping just four points on serve in a confident opening set.

Although Rakhimova fought well in the second set, Sabalenka secured the crucial break to go 5-4 up before safely serving out victory.

Sabalenka served 10 aces to Rakhimova’s two and did not face a single break point.

She will face either American Taylor Townsend or Russian 15th seed Diana Shnaider – who beat her in the French Open quarter-finals in June – next.

You make me want to step up my game

While WWE veteran Charlotte Flair is considered to be one of the most talented names on the roster, she believes that a rising star gave her stiff competition.

Over the years, Flair has won 14 Women’s Championship belts on RAW and SmackDown combined, along with several other belts. This cemented her place as one of the biggest names in the Stamford-based promotion’s Women’s division. However, Kiana James apparently has given her a run for her money.

Speaking in a recent appearance on What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon, Flair noted that she had praised Kiana James personally. She said:

“I told her one time, I think it was after the qualifier for [Elimination] Chamber. She was stressed about something. I was like, ‘I am telling you, I’ve been doing this for a long time and you make me want to step up my game. You were doing everything you’re supposed to.’ When I am in that ring and I go, ‘Oh, da*n. She’s making me work hard for this.’ She’s going to be such a star.”

WWE star Charlotte Flair also spoke about conflict with her father

According to Charlotte Flair, she has frequent fights with her father Ric Flair.

The WWE star claimed that she was often at odds with Ric Flair over the latter’s social media. She said:

“The amount that we fight about his social media… I cannot tell you, it’s a daily thing. I’m like, ‘Why are you in all caps? Why are you yelling at me in your posts?’ Here is what I learned – I was talking to Nattie the other day, and she was talking about Bret, and I was talking about my dad, and she’s like, ‘You know what, he’s earned the right to have an opinion.’ I was like, ‘Okay, that’s one way to look at it.’ Just let him have his opinion.”

Charlotte Flair still has a lot of time left in her career, and it remains to be seen what else she accomplishes in WWE.
