Watch: Team India arrives in New Chandigarh ahead of their one-off Test against Afghanistan | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: India’s Test squad reached New Chandigarh on Tuesday ahead of their one-off Test against Afghanistan, which begins on June 6 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The match marks India’s return to red-ball cricket after the end of IPL 2026 and will be led by captain Shubman Gill. Players including vice-captain KL Rahul, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy were seen arriving with the squad as preparations got underway.Although the Afghanistan Test is not part of the current World Test Championship cycle, it is a key opportunity for India to regain confidence in the longest format. The team has not played a Test since suffering a 2-0 home series defeat to South Africa last year. With challenging tours of Sri Lanka and New Zealand scheduled later in 2026, India will use this fixture to sharpen their game and build momentum.Watch the video of Team India arriving in New ChandigarhThe squad features a mix of established stars and emerging talent, and training sessions are expected to begin soon as the team fine-tunes its plans for the match. For Afghanistan, the one-off Test offers another chance to measure their progress against one of the strongest teams in world cricket. The visitors have gradually gained experience in the format and will be aiming to put up a strong challenge. The two teams have faced each other only once in Test cricket before. Their first meeting came in Bengaluru in 2018, when Afghanistan played their debut Test match. India dominated that contest, winning by an innings and 262 runs within two days. This upcoming encounter will be the first red-ball clash between India and Afghanistan since that historic meeting eight years ago.

Former Vikings LB Kobe King Had a Bad Monday
The Minnesota Vikings somewhat shockingly released linebacker Kobe King last season — a weird ordeal for a rookie drafted in April 2025. It didn’t take long for King to land on his feet with the New York Jets, but seven months later, that relationship has ended, as well.
The Jets said goodbye to King on Monday, so it’s back to the drawing board for the young defender.
Minnesota’s Late-Round Miss Moves to Free Agency
King Out in NYJ
The Jets claimed King off waivers in late October, and it’s sayonara in June. NBC Sports‘ Josh Alper wrote Monday, “The Jets signed Younghoe Koo last week in a move that gave them three kickers on their 90-man roster. That number is set to drop down to two on Monday. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that the Jets will waive Lenny Krieg, which will leave Koo and Cade York as their two kickers.”
“Krieg began playing football in Germany and joined the NFL’s International Player Pathway program in 2025. He spent last season on the Falcons’ practice squad and signed with the Jets in January. Costello also reports that the Jets will waive linebacker Kobe King. That move will come with an injury designation.”
King will now bide his time and eye a roster spot with some team this summer.
King’s Production So Far
King played 3 defensive snaps in Minnesota before former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah dropped him like a bad habit. Landing with the Jets, King did not see any action on defense, but he became a special teams contributor, getting in on the action in 9 games for 142 special teams snaps.
All told, King banked 10 tackles as a rookie and ended up playing in 14 games last year between the Vikings and Jets.
NFL Draft Buzz noted on King before the 2025 NFL Draft: “Possesses elite run-stopping instincts with a natural feel for blocking schemes – consistently beats offensive linemen to their spot and disrupts rushing lanes before they develop. Downhill thumper who brings serious thunder to his tackles — watch the Michigan game where he consistently stopped runners dead in their tracks through sheer force.”
“Shows outstanding stack-and-shed ability against guards and fullbacks, using powerful hands to maintain separation while tracking the ball carrier. Natural defensive quarterback who orchestrates pre-snap adjustments with veteran savvy – routinely puts teammates in position to make plays.”
The NYJ LB Room without Him
What will New York do without King? Oh, it should get by just fine. Here’s the ILB setup in June for Aaron Glenn’s team:
- Jamien Sherwood
- Demario Davis
- Marcelino McCrary-Ball
- Kiko Mauigoa
- Mykal Walker
- Jaden Keller
- Kingsley Jonathan
- Chase Wilson
- Paschal Ekeji
Sherwood and Davis are consistent and productive; after those two, the depth becomes skimpy, so Glenn must cultivate McCrary-Ball and Mauigoa in the event Sherwood or Davis succumb to injuries.
The Ringer‘s Diante Lee called the Jets the NFL’s worst team this offseason, noting, “This franchise can accumulate all the draft picks it wants, bring in a seasoned offensive play caller (Frank Reich), and use its almost $80 million in cap space to bring in the kind of dependable veterans it needs to kick-start a rebuild. But these are the Jets we’re talking about.”
“They find themselves in the league’s cellar because of their deep-seated incompetence, not luck or circumstance. The vibes on this team have stunk from the start of the offseason, when Aaron Glenn set out to replace basically his entire coaching staff, and it’s hard to see morale improving anytime soon.”
A Wasted Pick by MIN
King is unlikely to be a memorable player for Vikings fans years from now.
Most 6th- and 7th-Round draft picks quickly fade, and King’s potential release in October 2025 didn’t derail Minnesota’s season. Nevertheless, in retrospect, the pick feels like a missed opportunity.
When the Vikings selected King in April 2025, several more intriguing prospects were still available. Players like Brashard Smith, Kyle Monangai, Tez Johnson, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt were all drafted after King, and any of them could have offered the Vikings a more exciting developmental prospect.
While King being a Vikings bust isn’t catastrophic — late-round picks often don’t pan out — the Vikings effectively squandered that particular selection.
Meanwhile, the Vikings now have Nolan Teasley in the house as their new general manager. Perhaps the wasted draft picks will diminish. That’s the goal.
Before too long, one NFL general manager will likely realize that he needs a special teams commodity for training camp and give King a call. That’s usually how it works.

Ginebra’s path to finals will help PBA title bid, says Scottie
Scottie Thompson and Barangay Ginebra head into their PBA Commissioner’s Cup title showdown with TNT on Wednesday carrying lessons from their previous defeats at the hands of the same foe and hardened by a tough semifinal series against Rain or Shine.
And Thompson hopes that the 7:30 p.m. encounter at Smart Araneta Coliseum would be the stepping stone for the Gin Kings to finally get over the line and end a three-year championship drought that seemed like ages for a team used to success.
“We will use that as motivation,” Thompson said, as Ginebra eyes its first title since the 2022-2023 Commissioner’s Cup when it prevailed over the guest team Bay Area Dragons before 54,000 fans at Philippine Arena.
Championships have eluded the crowd favorites since, with their next three Finals trips ending in defeats, all against TNT.
Last year’s Commissioner’s Cup almost made Ginebra lucky on the third time, but TNT managed to sneak one again over its rival with a Game 7 thriller that went into overtime.
“Of course, we learned a lot of lessons from that, particularly on how we play defense against TNT,” the all-around swingman continued.
“Our defense has to be consistent from start to finish, and I think that would be the key for us to have a better chance of winning the championship.”
Hard series
Ginebra entered the Finals having weathered the stubborn challenge of Rain or Shine, taking the semifinal series in six games.
Almost all games saw the Gin Kings having to go through an Elasto Painters group that started strong and refused to go away whenever they trailed by big margins, apart from the physicality they played through.
“I think it’s going to prepare us coming into this championship, because we all know how hard that series was against Rain or Shine, especially since our defense was really challenged,” said Thompson.
“We believe that we will be able to get a lot of inputs from that series that we could bring going into our matchup against TNT,” he added.
Thompson will be one of the keys for Ginebra in the series, which could likely be more about how Justin Brownlee can succeed in his bid to become the PBA’s winningest import with a shot at title No. 7 and if RJ Abarrientos can cap off a sensational conference with a splendid showing in the Finals.
But expect TNT to have something to say about those quests. INQ

French Open 2026 results: Alexander Zverev beats Rafael Jodar and will play Jakub Mensik in semi-finals
Mensik and Fonseca, aged 20 and 19 respectively, are tipped to be among the players who could challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz at the very top of men’s tennis over the next few years – and their last-eight tie demonstrated why.
Both men were playing in their first major quarter-final and while Mensik confessed to feeling some early nerves in his post-match interview, his dominant serve proved critical as he moved into a two-set lead without facing a break point.
Fonseca had twice come back from two sets down to win matches at this year’s French Open, most notably in the third round against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
There were flashes of brilliance from the Brazilian throughout, but another mammoth comeback proved beyond him on this occasion under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The third set went on for close to 80 minutes, with Fonseca twice moving a break of serve ahead before being dragged back to parity by Mensik.
Serving at 6-5 down, Fonseca saved six match points in a marathon 12th game of the set before forcing a tie-break – which Mensik controlled to complete a 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-3) victory.
“At the end of the match, there were some incredible shots,” said Mensik, a former Masters 1000 champion in Miami.
“I’m super happy that I’m the one that came back. I was a break down a couple of times but I managed to stay focused, stay in the match and keep fighting until the end.”
Mensik is the first Czech player to reach a Grand Slam men’s singles semi-final since Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon in 2017 and he is projected to move back into the world’s top 20.

Goldeneyes re-sign Sarah Nurse on two-year deal
Sarah Nurse is running it back on the West Coast.
The Vancouver Goldeneyes announced Tuesday that the forward has been re-signed to a two-year contract.
In addition, she will also be one of Vancouver’s three protected players in the upcoming expansion roster distribution process, with Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose set to join the PWHL for the 2026-27 season.
Nurse, 31, was one of the five inaugural players signed by the Goldeneyes last June.
In 2025-26, the Hamilton, Ont., native played just 19 of 30 games, missing 11 due to injury, and posted nine goals and six assists. Her goals total was tied for first on the team, alongside Jenn Gardiner and Sophie Jaques.
Prior to joining Vancouver, Nurse played two seasons with the Toronto Sceptres, recording 37 points (17 goals and 20 assists) over 45 games.
She is a three-time Olympic medallist and six-time world championship medallist.

Ex-footballers’ boxing event backed by Tony Bellew and David Price raises £73,500 for charity
A commendable £73,500 was raised for charity as the likes of Tony Bellew and David Price assembled for a night of boxing action in Liverpool.
The show took place on April 17, with ex-professional footballers colliding in an event that was endorsed by sporting icons such as Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
Billed as ‘A Night To Remember II’, this followed Pro Project Promotions’ first charity boxing event in October, with the organisation aiming to give retired athletes an opportunity to reignite their competitive spirit.
Equally, Pro Project Promotions founder Graham Stack, a former Arsenal goalkeeper, is hoping to fundraise a total of £500,000 within the organisation’s debut year.
He is already nearing the halfway mark, having raised a total of £201,000 for charities such as Children’s Charity Merseyside and Autism Merseyside.
Stack made it clear that this is just the beginning.
“I’m so proud to see Pro Project Promotions go from strength to strength. These events give retired players purpose, structure and a way to keep competing for something that really matters.
“To raise £73,500 [in April] and push our six-month total past £201,000 is fantastic. We’re marching towards £500,000 raised for charities and I want to thank every single person who’s backed us so far.”
Pro Project Promotions will return to the Grosvenor House Hotel, Liverpool, on October 22, with ambassadors such as Natasha Jonas and Liam Smith expected to continue their support.
As for the show last April, it was ultimately Swansea City cult hero Lee Trundle who won the main event against ex-Scottish attacker Chris Iwelumo.
For Pro Project Promotions’ next boxing event, the competitors, entertainers, and charitable causes will be announced in the coming weeks.

Blue Jays injury updates: Latest on Cease, Scherzer, Kirk, others
The Toronto Blue Jays continue to have a long injury list as they begin a series on Tuesday in Atlanta against the Braves.
Before first pitch, the Blue Jays delivered the latest news on several players.
The two-time all-star catcher (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday with single-A Dunedin.
Kirk, who suffered the injury in his fifth game of the season, will start as a designated hitter before catching. The Blue Jays expect him to need an extended run of play before he’s activated.
The veteran right-hander (forearm tendinitis and ankle inflammation) is expected to throw a second rehab outing for triple-A Buffalo on Sunday. He threw three scoreless and hitless innings last time out.
The hope is for Scherzer to throw 60 pitches on Friday.
The starter (ankle) threw a bullpen Tuesday in Atlanta and did some change-of-direction running drills.
The tentative plan is for Cease to throw a rehab outing on Thursday for Buffalo. He could return to the Blue Jays after that if all goes well.
The starter (forearm), who has not pitched in the majors this season, will throw a bullpen on Wednesday in Toronto.
After throwing two outings in the lower minor leagues, the Jays are looking for him to start for Buffalo this weekend with the hope of getting to four innings.
The reliever (right forearm) threw a live batting practice on Monday in Dunedin, Fla.
He’s scheduled to make a rehab appearance on Friday for Buffalo.
The reliever, who has yet to pitch in the majors this year because of an elbow injury, is scheduled to begin another rehab assignment on Wednesday with an inning of work for Dunedin.
The outfielder (elbow) has progressed to hitting and throwing at the team’s player development complex in Dunedin.
The infielder (wrist) is beginning a hitting progression in Dunedin.
The outfielder is day-to-day after suffering a wrist injury when he was hit by a fan throwing a baseball on Sunday in Baltimore.

Serena Williams Announces Tennis Comeback at 44
Serena Williams is officially returning to professional tennis.
Nearly four years after her last competitive match, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has confirmed that she will make her comeback at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London next week.
The 44-year-old announced the news in a Nike video with the simple message: “Guess everybody heard the news.”
Williams will compete in the doubles event and is set to partner rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko.
Speaking about her return, Williams said:
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter. Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
The announcement ends months of speculation surrounding a possible comeback. Williams returned to the anti-doping testing pool late last year and had been spotted training in Florida, fueling rumors of a return to competition.
Williams has not played professionally since the 2022 US Open. At the time, she avoided using the word retirement, instead describing her departure from tennis as “evolving away” from the sport.
Williams owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the Open Era, and has also won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister, Venus Williams. She remains one of the most successful and influential figures the sport has ever seen.
While her return begins in doubles, attention is already turning to Wimbledon, where Williams is a seven-time singles champion.
The next chapter begins at Queen’s Club.

CSK Told To Change 3 Key Weak Points Immediately By Ravichandran Ashwin
Chennai Super Kings finished eighth in the IPL 2026 points table. They started on the wrong footing and ended on a poor note too. In the middle, some strong performances by Sanju Samson and others raised hopes among the fans of CSK, one of the most followed IPL franchises, yet they could not qualify for the playoffs. At the end, CSK ended with 12 points from 14 matches. Ravichandran Ashwin, a former CSK player himself, praised the efforts of Sanju Samson, Akeal Hosein, and Anshul Kamboj, but added that the auction strategies should be reworked.
Auction Strategy, Role Clarity And Decision-Making
“Auction strategies need to be reworked. Two teams picked Venkatesh Iyer and Jason Holder for 7 crores and made the final. Instead of picking two for 14 crores each, they should have gone for these two to achieve a combination of youth and experience. They didn’t gel as a team and had role clarity issues,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“Other teams suffered injuries before the season itself. But for CSK, injuries aren’t new, and their players got injured after the season started. Despite their best efforts, they couldn’t overcome the injuries, which continue to be a problem for them. They gave the wrong insertion points for many players. Using Brevis and Dube as finishers means the decision-making was also lopsided.”
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming said that although MS Dhoni did not feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter continued to have a big influence on the team, adding that his presence around the side has been extremely important.
The 44-year-old, who suffered injuries, missed the entire tournament. However, despite Dhoni not featuring in any of CSK’s matches, coach Fleming said that the former CSK captain has remained closely involved with the team and continues to have a major influence, particularly in guiding younger players and maintaining continuity within the squad.
“MS (Dhoni) has been around a lot this year, which has been really important for the team, for a lot of young players, and continuity. So, he’s been a big part. He hasn’t played, but he’s still had a big influence on the team,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference

Jon Rahm not pitching LIV investors: ‘My job is to play golf’
May 8, 2026; Sterling, Virginia, USA; Jon Rahm smiles after finishing a hole during the second round of LIV Golf Virginia golf tournament at Trump National Golf Club. Mandatory Credit: John (Jack) Power-Imagn Images Jon Rahm said he is focused on posting low numbers rather than helping financially challenged LIV Golf raise big ones.
The Spanish star was asked at a Tuesday press conference ahead of this week’s tournament in Andalucia whether he will take a leading role in helping the league find new investors.
“It would be more of a stay-in-your-lane type situation as it goes to me,” Rahm said.
“I know nothing about business,” the two-time major winner added. “I’m never going to claim to know anything about business, and if I was in a business pitch, I would not know the first thing to say. My job is to play golf.”
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil has said that several players have offered fundraising support since Saudi Arabia announced in late April that it was ending its financial support after the 2026 season. Bryson DeChambeau, for one, said last week that he has “quite a few ideas” for investors.
Rahm said he is too busy with golf and family matters to add anything else to his plate.
“If any player who knows what they’re doing is willing to do certain things like that, I think it can only help,” Rahm said. “To have insight from a player on a meeting like that can help, and I’m open for any suggestions possible, but I would also say I don’t have the free time that Bryson has to be flying around the country to attend meetings with three little ones and one on the way. Even if I wanted to, I don’t know if I could do it.”
Fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia expressed his support for O’Neil’s efforts when he was asked Tuesday about his confidence levels in LIV Golf existing beyond this season. “We’re really excited about the work that our CEO, Scott, and his team are putting in. We enjoy being involved in it, giving our input and seeing how we can help make sure that the league keeps going forward,” Garcia said.
“We’re very confident that (next year is) going to happen. It’s just going to look different. In my opinion, more than being worried about if LIV is going to keep going or the league is going to keep going, it’s more how is it going to look going forward. I think that’s where we are, and we’re trying to figure out the best way possible moving forward and how we can be excited for all of us, not only ourselves but our fans, our sponsors, everyone that is involved.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the final product.”

Aaron Rai keen to learn from mistakes heading into Memorial Tournament
May 17, 2026; Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, USA; Aaron Rai reacts with the trophy after winning the final round of the PGA Championship golf tournament. Mandatory Credit: James Lang-Imagn Images Aaron Rai’s fifth-place finish at last month’s Myrtle Beach Classic may seem like a disappointment considering he led going into the weekend, but he said the outcome was “massively” important to his ensuing PGA Championship win.
The setback also provided lessons he’ll carry into this week’s Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
“That experience at Myrtle Beach was absolutely invaluable for the PGA, and I’m not sure I would have handled the situation as well as I did at the PGA if I hadn’t experienced it the week before at Myrtle Beach,” Rai said at a press conference Tuesday ahead of the tournament in Dublin, Ohio.
The 31-year-old Englishman said getting used to the feeling of being in the last group at Myrtle Beach, something he hadn’t been a part of for at least five months prior, was “huge.”
He also said some “small things” that happened during his final round helped set him up well for his first major win at the PGA Championship.
“Bits from the crowd, bits from a couple of mistakes that I made in the midsection of the round. I think I made four bogeys in a row around the turn. I think just kind of where my mind went, certain things that I could have dealt with better, I was very aware of even on the Saturday of the PGA,” Rai said.
“I think when you’ve had that experience so recently before, it’s a lot fresher in the mind and it’s a lot easier to make those adjustments. So, yeah, that was crucial, really.”
Rai expressed an eagerness to play at Muirfield, which he called “an amazing golf course” and one of his favorites on the PGA Tour. “It’s an absolutely incredible event, a course that I absolutely love,” he said. “Very demanding. I think it requires a complete game no matter what your skill set is, whether you’re a little shorter, whether you’re a little longer, whether you’re straight, whether the short game is good. It requires everything to be successful around this event.”
This will be Rai’s fourth Tour start at Muirfield. He finished T26 in 2022 but missed the cut in his last two appearances in 2023 and 2025.
He said those experiences on the course have shown that “it’s really hard,” but he plans to take what he’s learned from previous years and apply it this weekend.
“Certainly after playing it a little bit more, it definitely requires a little bit more understanding, and I probably haven’t done as good of a job as I could in terms of my preparation, especially last year,” Rai said of his 9-over-par finish when he posted rounds of 79 and 74 in missing the cut. “I think just trying to approach it a little bit better. Got here slightly earlier this week as well in order to do so. And to just learn from a couple of the mistakes that I’ve made in previous years.”
Rai will have to get past two-time defending champion and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who finished at 10-under last year for a four-stroke victory over Ben Griffin.
