Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff home run in the sixth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers prevailed in a pitchers’ duel, earning a 1-0 victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

Justin Wrobleski (8-2) gave up just three singles over six scoreless innings as the Dodgers improved to 11-2 at home since May 13. The left-hander struck out five without issuing a walk.

Freddie Freeman had a pair of hits in a game that ended in a tidy 1 hour, 52 minutes.

Will Klein, Kyle Hurt and Tanner Scott finished off the shutout for the Dodgers with a scoreless inning each. Scott earned his ninth save with an 11-pitch ninth inning.

Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen (6-3) continued his recent run of solid pitching by allowing one run over seven innings, but the Ohtani homer proved costly. It was the only run Rasmussen has allowed in 21 innings over his past three starts. He permitted six hits and no walks while fanning seven.

The Tampa Bay offense was held to three hits, one each from Taylor Walls, Austin Slater and Yandy Diaz.

The Dodgers had their chances early, getting back-to-back one-out singles in the first inning from Andy Pages and Freeman before Mookie Betts grounded into a double play. The hosts had runners on first and third with one out in the second, but Kyle Tucker was thrown out at home plate on a bunt from Alex Freeland, and Chuckie Robinson grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Rasmussen was on a run of 11 consecutive outs when he faced Ohtani to open the bottom of the sixth. Ohtani sent a first-pitch cutter 427 feet to center field for his 15th homer of the year and fourth over his past six games.

Ohtani, who led all major-leaguers when All-Star Game balloting was released for the first time this week, is set to pitch in the finale of the three-game series on Wednesday. The Dodgers logged one-run wins in each of the set’s first two games.

Caitlin Clark reclaims WNBA assist lead while demolishing a new team you’ve probably never heard of

Published

on

Caitlin Clark put on a clinic Tuesday night, leading the Indiana Fever to a dominant 113-91 win over the Toronto Tempo — a franchise so new that half the audience was probably doing a double take when the score appeared.

Oh, and the win was the fourth consecutive victory for the scorching-hot Fever.

But the biggest milestone of the night was Clark reclaiming the top spot on the WNBA assists leaderboard. She recorded 14 assists in just 32 minutes.

She was equally effective when looking for her own shot.

Clark finished with 21 points, forcing Toronto to respect her scoring ability and preventing defenders from keying solely on her passing.

By balancing her responsibilities as both a facilitator and scorer, she kept Indiana’s offense difficult to predict. She also added five rebounds.

Orchestrating an offense that produced 113 points and a 22-point victory margin was a nice reminder from Clark of her WNBA dominance.

Frankly, we’ve never seen a player like her, though some have already forgotten.

Messi ties World Cup goals record with hat trick for Argentina vs. Algeria

Published

on

There are few things more basic than turning towards a screen and expecting Lionel Messi to score. It is why spectators fill MLS stadiums on the regular, like clockwork, a drilled-in habit rather than an intentional, carefully chosen option. It is probably why thousands spent hundreds or thousands of dollars to pack Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. on a Tuesday as Argentina faced Algeria in their World Cup opener. There’s almost a banal predictability to it, to the point that it almost doesn’t feel like news because of its routine nature; all the more easy to write him off because he’s a week away from his 39th birthday.

And yet, Messi still manages to captivate.

Another chapter to Messi’s already historic legacy was written on Tuesday in the American Midwest and an appropriate one at that. The World Cup winner equalled Germany international Miroslav Klose’s record for most career tournament goals with 16, reaching the feat on the back of three expertly taken goals that offered the latest reminder of his unnaturally natural talent. The historic goal was perhaps the least exciting of the three he scored on Tuesday, but it did not dim the quality he boasts more often than not when he takes to the pitch. Nico Gonzalez’s pass landed at Messi’s feet, the star with barely any bodies around him to try to nick the ball away. It was the perfect opportunity for him to take a shot from the edge of the penalty area and after two impressive goals behind him, he was not going to miss from there.

Leave it to Messi to mark multiple accomplishments in one go. He managed the feat while winning his 200th cap for Argentina and did so on the day of his very first World Cup hattrick, all while becoming his team’s oldest-ever goalscorer at the tournament exactly 20 years after becoming their youngest-ever scorer. It was also the first hattrick of this summer’s World Cup, six other players scoring braces to open the tournament before he notched a third.

It is a noteworthy feat for someone whose quality has undoubtedly dimmed from his peak years, and for the leader of a team many do not believe will successfully defend their World Cup title from 2022. It has been easy to suggest that Messi and Argentina will not be at the peak of their powers this time around; one win, no matter how notable, is not enough to necessarily change minds. He has been on the verge of being outshadowed by younger players making their best case to take over the spotlight he will undoubtedly leave behind one day – France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland each opened their World Cup campaigns with a brace in decisive wins for their teams.

Rank Player Country Goals Tournaments
T-1 Miroslav Klose Germany 16 2002–14
T-1 Lionel Messi Argentina 16 2006–26
3 Ronaldo (R9) Brazil 15 1994–2006
T-4 Kylian Mbappé France 14 2018–26
T-4 Gerd Müller West Germany 14 1970–74
6 Just Fontaine France 13 1958
7 Pelé Brazil 12 1958–70
T-8 Sándor Kocsis Hungary 11 1954
T-8 Jürgen Klinsmann Germany 11 1990–98
T-10 Helmut Rahn West Germany 10 1954–58
T-10 Teófilo Cubillas Peru 10 1970–82
T-10 Gabriel Batistuta Argentina 10 1994–2002
13 Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal 8 2006–22

Somehow, someway, though, Messi seems to find a way. For the first time in his storied career, he is back at the World Cup without the weight of a passionate nation on his shoulders. The trophy that had eluded him for decades has already been won, every complementary accolade already part of the collection. Without another title this summer, his impressive legacy is already set. Every time the sport itches for a new star, Messi offers a stark reminder that his abilities have not faded all that much – he might not be peak Messi anymore, but Messi is still Messi. Opposing defenders rarely seem to have a solution, even if it is the most obvious job they will be tasked with. Even if a Messi goal is ridiculously easy to predict, his movements are hard to track on the field; he will make his moments count far more often than he will not, leaving opponents and fans alike stunned.

Perhaps more impressive is that Messi has checked off a batch of accomplishments in the latter stages of his career. He now stands at 16 World Cup goals, but he had just six entering the 2022 tournament, notching seven last time out as Argentina’s decades-long wait for the title came to an end. Now with the pressure off, there’s a freedom that underscores his play; he continues to make it all look easy, somehow always living up to the billing.

The odds are technically not in Messi’s favor – simply put, an aging star should not be the leader of a title contender, let alone doing this type of thing. Messi has never been the average player and at this point is not your regular post-peak elite athlete. As long as he is on the pitch, Argentina will be difficult to underestimate – and Messi will be impossible to write off.

Reid Detmers allowed three hits over seven shutout innings to help the visiting Los Angeles Angels to a 7-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday night in Phoenix.

Detmers (3-5) struck out three without a walk and the left-hander threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of 24 hitters.

Zach Neto homered and tripled, Mike Trout homered and doubled, Logan O’Hoppe delivered three hits, Denzer Guzman contributed two hits and scored two runs, and Donovan Walton finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Angels, who have won five of seven.

Arizona starter Merrill Kelly (5-6) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs and a season-high 11 hits while striking out four and walking one.

The Diamondbacks had won two in a row and three of four.

The Angels scored first for the 10th straight game after Jo Adell led off the second with a double to center. Following a ground out that moved Adell to third, Wade Meckler drove him in with a single to center for a 1-0 lead.

Neto came up with one out in the third and blasted a solo home run deep over the fence in left to stretch the lead to 2-0.

The Angels tacked on another run in the fourth after Guzman reached on an infield single, O’Hoppe doubled down the left field line and Walton grounded a single to right to score Guzman and make it 3-0. But O’Hoppe was thrown out at the plate trailing the play.

Neto tripled high off the wall in center to start the fifth. Trout then stepped up and cranked the first pitch over the wall in nearly the same spot in center for a two-run homer and a 5-0 lead.

The Angels opened the sixth with back-to-back singles from Guzman and O’Hoppe. Kelly departed after getting Walton to foul out, but Trout came through with a two-out double off Ryan Thompson to extend the lead to 6-0.

Walton’s RBI ground-rule double off the warning track in right in the eighth extended the lead to 7-0.

Down 2-0, Adrian Del Castillo lined a single to center to lead off the third for the Diamondbacks, but Neto made a nice backhand play on a grounder by LuJames Groover to start a 6-4-3 double play.

Detmers later struck out Corbin Carroll with runners on the corners to end the sixth.

Cal Raleigh delivers decisive hit in return from injured list as Mariners top Orioles

Published

on

SEATTLE — Cal Raleigh hit a two-run single in his return from the injured list, Logan Gilbert struck out a season-high 10 in seven strong innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Julio Rodríguez had an RBI single for the Mariners, who hold a slim lead in the AL West. Gilbert (5-4) combined with two relievers on a three-hitter.

Raleigh, last year’s AL MVP runner-up who had been out since May 14 because of an oblique strain, broke a 1-all tie in the seventh. Batting from the right side against reliever Grant Wolfram with the bases loaded and one out, the switch-hitter sent a line drive to center field that scored Victor Robles and Colt Emerson.

Eduard Bazardo pitched a perfect eighth and Andrés Muñoz worked a one-hit ninth for his 11th save.

Gilbert gave up a leadoff double to Taylor Ward and a two-out RBI single to Samuel Basallo in the first, but retired his next 16 batters until hitting Pete Alonso with a pitch to start the seventh.

Seattle tied it in the third when Rodríguez lined a two-out single after Orioles starter Brandon Young (5-2) walked Miles Mastrobuoni and J.P. Crawford with one out.

Young gave up three runs and four hits in six-plus innings. He was removed after allowing an infield single to Robles and another single to Emerson in the seventh.

WWE Show Ends in Chaos; Female Star Appears Despite Saying Goodbye

Published

on

WWE presented an action-packed edition of NXT tonight. The show ended in chaos and featured an appearance from a star who bid goodbye to fans last Tuesday.

The main event of this week’s WWE NXT saw Women’s Champion Lola Vice and Kendal Grey join forces to take on Women’s North American Champion Zaria and Kelani Jordan in a tag team match. The two sides delivered a back-and-forth showdown before taking the action to ringside. Zaria attempted an F5 on the floor to Vice before Tatum Paxley surprisingly showed up.

The former NXT Women’s North American Champion was in the audience, distracting the Australian powerhouse. Paxley’s unexpected appearance caught Zaria off guard. Lola Vice capitalized on the opening and hit a spinning back fist on the face-painted star. In the end, Vice pinned Zaria to secure the win for her team.

Last week, Tatum Paxley lost her NXT Women’s North American Championship to Zaria. After the match, Paxley was visibly emotional and bid goodbye to WWE fans at ringside. Many believed she was main roster-bound. However, it seems like her NXT feud with Zaria is not over yet.

Following the tag team main event of tonight’s WWE NXT, Paxley launched an attack on Zaria. Kelani Jordan attempted to steal the NXT Women’s Championship amid the chaos. However, Grey inadvertently took out Vice with the title amid the brawl.

Despite emerging victorious in the tag team contest, the night didn’t end well for Lola Vice and Kendal Grey. The show concluded with Grey trying to explain that she accidentally took out the NXT Women’s Champion. Vice and Grey will now square off for the prestigious title at The Great American Bash on June 28, 2026.

The promotional poster for The Great American Bash features Tatum Paxley. However, she doesn’t have a match on the show as of this writing. Given her latest attack on Zaria, it seems like the Triple H-led creative team is planning to book a rematch between the two at the premium live event.
