Apple Event Live Blog: Folding iPhone, Apple Watch Series 12, AirPods, and More

Good morning everyone! Welcome to our live coverage of today’s Apple media showcase.

We will have two reporters on the scene at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, to bring you live coverage. You’ll be hearing from Julian Chokkattu, Boutayna Chokrane, Lauren Goode, Reece Rogers, and Michael Calore throughout the event. We might have some special guests pop in as well. We’ll be posting frequent news updates here, with the highlights also going on our social platforms.

Apple’s presentation begins at 10 am Pacific, 1 pm Eastern, and 6 pm in the UK. We have a complete rundown on how to watch the show and what to expect.

A Folding iPhone Today

The short version of what to expect: The folding variant of the iPhone should make its debut today. The word around Silicon Valley is that it’s expected to be named the iPhone Ultra and that it will likely cost more than $2,000.

We’ll probably also see a Pro version iPhone today, and we can expect the folding iPhone and the Pro models to go on sale later in September.

What about the base model iPhone 18? That might not arrive until early next year, though Apple might tease it today. The longer wait could be because of a number of factors, including rising manufacturing costs and the ongoing memory crisis affecting the whole PC industry. Also, delaying the next generation of cheaper iPhones—the 18, the 18e, and the Air—would give Apple an opportunity to promote its premium handsets more heavily.

It’s also likely we’ll see the newest Apple Watch and Watch Ultra models debut at today’s event.

Both the new iPhones and the new Apple Watches will be getting some additional capabilities enabled by Siri AI, the newest version of Apple’s artificially intelligent assistant. So, expect lots of talk about the beefed-up new chips in these devices as well as “on-device AI,” secure computing, and battery optimization. Siri AI is actually powerful and impressive in our testing of the beta version, but just like the various Siris that came before it, there are limits to how helpful it can really be in your day-to-day life.

Also notable is the list of things we’re not expecting: Apple’s various smart-home products that have been rumored to be close to release, including new HomePod speakers and a smart home device that’s used to interacting with Siri’s camera-based Visual Intelligence capabilities.

Along those lines are the rumored AirPods with tiny cameras in them that can be used, in conjunction with voice commands, to give Siri AI some additional context about what you’re looking at and inquiring about. Those earbuds might come today, but we could just as well see them at an additional event in late September or in October. (It’s likely the smart-home products will show up at the next event too.)

You can watch it in your TV’s YouTube app; just tune into Apple’s YouTube channel. You can also watch it on Apple’s own streaming app. If you have an Apple TV or any streaming box, just go into the Apple TV app. When you open the app, the livestream for the event should be displayed prominently right at the top. This works even if you don’t subscribe to Apple’s paid streaming service. Watching it on the television frees up your laptop screen so you can follow the live blog. Convenient!

Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC Open-Back Wireless Headphones Offer LDAC, ANC and Up to 75 Hours of Battery Life

Consumers are hardly suffering from a shortage of wireless headphones. The category is packed at both ends, with increasingly capable budget models fighting for attention below $200 and premium designs from Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, Apple, Bowers & Wilkins, and others pushing well beyond $400. The $250 to $300 range has become particularly competitive, and the arrival of Sony’s new $299 WH-1000XM4C only makes that fight more difficult for everyone else.

Audio-Technica is taking a somewhat different approach with its newly announced ATH-AL5NC Wireless Headphones, combining a lightweight, open-back over-ear design with wireless connectivity, high-resolution LDAC audio, noise reduction, and up to 75 hours of battery life. Rather than simply adding another closed-back ANC model to an already crowded market, the ATH-AL5NC attempts to deliver the more spacious presentation associated with traditional open-back headphones without requiring listeners to remain tethered to a headphone amplifier or source component.

Following the success of the R-Series (ATH-R30xATH-R70ax and ATH-R50x) developed for music production, and the recently expanded ADX Series for audiophile listening, the ATH-AL5NC rounds out Audio-Technica’s open-back headphone lineup by adding both wireless and wired connectivity.

Open-Back Sound With Wireless Freedom

Targeted at hi-fi music listeners, remote workers, gamers, and others who value sound quality, long-term comfort, and greater awareness of their surroundings, the ATH-AL5NC offers an alternative to both traditional wired open-back headphones and more isolating closed-back wireless models.

The ATH-AL5NC incorporates 53 mm dynamic drivers designed to produce a wide, detailed soundstage with a natural presentation.

For wireless listening, the ATH-AL5NC supports Bluetooth with high-resolution 24-bit/96 kHz LDAC audio, along with AAC and SBC codec support. The open-back design also allows listeners to maintain greater awareness of activity around them than they would with most closed-back wireless headphones.

Bluetooth Multipoint pairing allows the headphones to remain connected to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously, while a built-in microphone supports calls, virtual meetings, and gaming communication.

For those who prefer a physical connection, the ATH-AL5NC includes a 1.2-meter (3.9-foot) cable terminated with a 3.5 mm (1/8-inch) stereo mini-plug. The cable also incorporates an electret condenser microphone.

Active noise cancellation is available with both wireless and wired connections. Audio-Technica also includes a Sound Leakage Prevention mode, designed to reduce the amount of sound escaping from the open-back earcups and minimize disturbance to people nearby.

Comfort is another major part of the design. The open-back earcups promote airflow to reduce heat buildup, while the headphones weigh just 240 grams (8.5 ounces). Audio-Technica also says the earpads rest gently around the ears with minimal clamping pressure, which should make the ATH-AL5NC better suited to extended listening sessions.

Battery life extends up to 75 hours of continuous playback with Bluetooth enabled and noise cancellation switched off. With noise cancellation enabled, that figure drops to a still substantial 50 hours. A 15-minute quick charge provides up to eight additional hours of playback.

The Audio-Technica CONNECT app provides additional customization, including adjustable EQ, preset and flat sound settings, codec selection, a headphone-locating function, low-latency mode for gaming and video playback, and Soundscape, which offers nature sounds, masking noise, and meditation audio.

The Bottom Line 

We don’t yet have enough information about the ATH-AL5NC’s tuning and overall performance to make a meaningful comparison with Audio-Technica’s R-Series or considerably more ambitious ADX models. What is already clear, however, is that Audio-Technica is trying something rather different in a wireless headphone market overflowing with closed-back ANC designs.

The ATH-AL5NC attempts to bridge two categories that rarely overlap: the spacious presentation, ventilation, and long-term comfort of an open-back headphone with the convenience of Bluetooth, LDAC, active noise cancellation, wired connectivity, and up to 75 hours of battery life with ANC switched off. At just 240 grams, that combination could make it especially appealing for music listening, gaming, and remote work where comfort and some awareness of the surrounding environment are more important than complete isolation.

There is, however, an obvious trade-off. Open-back headphones intentionally allow outside sound in and some of your music out. Audio-Technica’s Sound Leakage Prevention mode should help reduce the latter, and ANC can reduce lower-frequency background noise, but neither feature turns the ATH-AL5NC into a conventional closed-back travel headphone. They might work on a train at moderate volume, but commuters who want maximum isolation from rail noise and minimum annoyance from the person sitting beside them, will probably be better served by a closed-back alternative.

That is also what makes the ATH-AL5NC interesting. Instead of building another Sony or Bose clone, Audio-Technica has taken some of the qualities that make open-back headphones attractive for serious listening and attempted to make them substantially more practical for everyday use. If the sonic performance lives up to that premise, the ATH-AL5NC could occupy a rather useful middle ground.

But what about the competition?

At $299, the Sony WH-1000XM4C takes the more conventional route with a closed-back wireless ANC design aimed squarely at commuters and travelers. It also supports wired listening, but its stronger isolation makes it a more practical choice on trains and airplanes. Its 27-hour battery life, however, falls well short of the ATH-AL5NC’s maximum 75-hour rating.

The Final UX5000 is an even closer price rival at $249.99. It supports Bluetooth, LDAC, aptX Adaptive, ANC, and a 3.5mm wired connection, with up to 65 hours of playback with ANC switched off. Like the Sony, however, it uses a closed-back design intended to provide substantially greater passive isolation than the ATH-AL5NC.

That leaves Audio-Technica with a rather unusual proposition. Sony and Final offer the isolation most commuters expect from wireless ANC headphones, while the ATH-AL5NC trades some of that isolation for airflow, environmental awareness, and the more open presentation associated with traditional open-back designs.

Engineer’s Guide On How to Survive a Layoff Strong

I lost a cushy engineering management position at the same time I purchased a business, with a mortgage, three kids, and every other financial obligation of being an adult. It was one of the most stressful stretches of my life. If something similar has happened to you, I feel your pain.

You lose more than the income

For many of us, our work became our identity, so we don’t just think, “I don’t have a job anymore.” We start thinking, “I’m not an engineer anymore.”

An apple tree in winter is still an apple tree. A car parked in a driveway is still a car. You’re still an engineer, the same way you were still one every evening you clocked out, and the same way you’ll be one at the next job. Your skills took years to build and won’t evaporate because a company stopped paying for them. This feeling can be particularly rough if part of your identity was tied to a recognizable employer.

However, this can also be a chance to catch up on what you’ve been putting off: working out, being present with your kids, writing, whatever hobby got shelved for a deadline three years ago.

Once you’ve caught your breath, here are some tips for when the actual work starts:

1. Don’t sprint on day one

I started applying for jobs the next morning after the layoff. It felt productive, but it gave me no time to settle my nervous system or consider what I actually wanted next. I took the first offer that came along, at a company I already knew wasn’t right, and quit after exactly 30 days. Give yourself a few days before deciding anything. Plans built out of desperation rarely work out well.

2. Audit your spending

Go through every subscription and recurring charge and cut what isn’t essential. Every dollar you stop bleeding buys you patience instead of forcing a bad offer out of fear.

3. Build a list wider than LinkedIn

Start with former colleagues and vendors, or businesses with a relationship to your previous employer. They already know you or your company, which gives you the halo effect: Some of the trust from your employer carries over to you automatically.

LinkedIn is table stakes and is the most popular place to find work, but that doesn’t mean your search should stop there. Try Facebook, Instagram, and other social media channels too, where plenty of people who aren’t on LinkedIn might have leads for open roles. I found my first job years ago from a Facebook post, and both roles I landed after being laid off came from startup job boards and recruiters I found entirely outside LinkedIn. Your mileage may vary, but LinkedIn isn’t the only game in town.

Don’t skip your inner circle either: Text your family and friends. Good leads rarely come from someone you know directly, but they do come from someone that person knows. Work this list daily and track who you’ve contacted.

4. Eight hours is a long time

With no work to fill your day, you may default to treating the search like an eight-hour shift. You can’t apply productively for 8 hours straight, and that’s why people burn out. Use a focused morning block for the list in step 3, then spend the rest of your day on activities you’ve been putting off.

5. Catalog your wins before you study interview questions

Cataloging your wins is a higher-leverage move than drilling practice questions this early. Can you explain the most impactful project you worked on in the last year? Probably not.

Most people skip this step, then default to generic answers when a recruiter asks about their last role. Write down specific stories showing leadership, technical ability, and grace under pressure. They’ll come up once you’re in interviews, and cataloging them rebuilds your confidence along the way too. Save the deep prep for once an interview is on the calendar.

Ask yourself daily whether today’s work is generating interest in you, or leading you to someone who might hire you. If not, consider skipping it.

One last thing

A layoff rarely reflects your skills. It’s usually a company protecting revenue—nothing more personal than that. Knowing that doesn’t make it easier, but hopefully this gets you back on your feet faster.

I Rode in the Goodyear Blimp to Celebrate This Spirit Halloween Team-Up

Closed-toe shoes? Check. Bags on the ground? Check. Phone in airplane mode? Check. Why all this prep? I took a ride on the Goodyear Blimp, y’all, and hung out with a pilot who dressed like one.

On Wednesday, Goodyear and Spirit Halloween dropped a new collaboration for 2026: the Goodyear Blimp is officially a costume option this season. While you could make a DIY version if you want (we love cosplayers over here), you should pop up at a party in this $80 inflatable that has Goodyear’s stamp of approval. No papier-mache, metallic tape, glue gun or sewing machine needed.

I had a chance to preview the new costume a few weeks ahead of launch, and along with that, climbed aboard the actual blimp when it stopped in Atlanta. I joined a few other members of the media who were invited to float in the clouds to celebrate the rollout, because for the first time ever, the famous airship is now a retail-ready Halloween costume. Designed with a battery pack and cooling fan, it comes with a cap and a one-piece, one-size-fits-all ensemble for adults. 

Tethered to the ground at a local airport, the Goodyear Blimp looked massive up close, where a crew held the levitating ladder for us as we climbed inside one by one. Two pilots, Jeff Capek and Fayth Rascon-Ryn, were seated at the controls, ready to fly us around the outskirts of the city. Like on an airplane flight, we were instructed to buckle our seat belts for takeoff. Slowly and steadily, the airship ascended upward, and then we began our ride, hitting a maximum speed of around 35 miles per hour. Outfitted with windows all around, the gondola allowed for some great shots of the skyline, local scenery below and even the little propellers on the blimp.

Our guide and crew member, Jensen Kervern (who’s also a pilot), hit the runway — on the tarmac and inside the ship’s gondola — to model the costume while sharing history and facts about the ubiquitous blimp with us passengers. What you may recognize as the helium-filled “big part” of the blimp is called the envelope, and its pressure is maintained by two ballonets that also keep the ship level and upright. If you’re curious about helium refills, she shared that it’s replenished over time and filtered when grounded at home base.

“When we’re at home, we’ll hook it up to a big machine — a purifier — that operates a lot like a dialysis machine. It’ll pull out all the impurities and put the helium back inside. We try to reuse it; it’s a finite resource that’s very expensive,” said Kervern. She also graciously snapped a few photos with us.

As you may imagine, your Spirit Halloween costume won’t come equipped with any helium for added drifting effect, but it does have a battery-operated fan to keep it aloft. I hope the visuals and details I’ve shared from my experience can lend a little razzle-dazzle to your creative Halloween aspirations. And yeah, it really does feel like you’re floating on air.

A Stealth Startup Thinks It Just Hacked the Memory Shortage

Kepler also says it has improved the density of SRAM using ferroelectrics, which can read and write data at lower voltages than the mechanisms typically used to process and store data in semiconductors. The startup did this by developing a new, low-voltage, composite material that works with this ferroelectric approach.

Sasi Manipatruni, a Kepler cofounder and its chief technology officer, says the Kepler team went through 35 iterations of composites before they landed on a material class that they thought would make memory chips easier and cheaper to make.

“Once we found a way to solve the physics problem—as in the physical limitations for HBM—we came up with a material innovation that helps with the amount of memory you can have between chips,” he says.

In its early build-outs with GlobalFoundries, Kepler says it was able to convert a fab into a “next-generation” fab in just eight months, compared to a typical 24-month timeframe.

“Out goal is to take the fabs and architectures already built, and push them to the limits of physics,” Olaosebikan says.

Basically Kepler is betting that any additional costs that come from new materials or retooling existing fabs would far outweigh the $20 billion to $40 billion it costs to build new ones and outfit them with equipment worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Waiting to Scale

Kepler Computing still has a long road ahead before it reaches full-scale production—assuming it gets there. To date, the company has run its technology on around 2,000 wafers. The startup says it’s planning to ship its first samples of HBM chips later this year, ramp up production out of Singapore next year, and start chip production in the US in 2028.

Kaste, the GlobalFoundries executive, says he’s confident that the “fundamental breakthroughs have happened. What remains is getting good results on thousands of wafers and millions of devices.”

He points out that one of the challenges with a material system like the one Kepler is using is that it includes iron in its composite. “Iron is a tough contaminant to introduce into a production facility. So Kepler’s solution has to run on dedicated equipment, or be fully encapsulated so that it can’t escape,” he says.

“The art is in keeping that material really well isolated through our production flow,” Kaste says.

LG accused of tracking smart TV users, scanning home networks, and recording audio through built-in microphones

WTF?! An investigation by YouTube channel Gamers Nexus has found that LG’s smart OLED TVs track users’ viewing patterns across streaming platforms, cable, and local media. The televisions also reportedly scan users’ home Wi-Fi network, collect information about connected devices without permission, and transmit the data to LG Ad Solutions to push targeted advertising.

The investigators found that LG was using Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology to track not only users’ viewing habits but also any content played through the TVs’ HDMI, USB, RJ45, optical, RCA, and coaxial ports. However, using ACR to track content is not just a problem limited to LG but an industry-wide practice used by almost all major smart TV manufacturers globally.

The investigation, which was conducted in collaboration with fellow tech YouTubers Level1Tech and multiple independent security researchers, also found that the TVs have a major security loophole that can be used by hackers and other malicious actors to surreptitiously record audio through the built-in microphone, even when the device is switched off.

Alarmingly, unplugging the TV from the power socket and shutting off the internet don’t automatically delete the recordings or prevent the data from being transmitted. According to the researchers, the recorded audio files can be safely stored on the TVs’ local storage and sent to third-party servers once it’s powered on and reconnected to the internet.

As if the risk of hacking and unauthorized data harvesting aren’t troubling enough, the researchers also found the TVs harbor critical remote-code-execution vulnerabilities that could potentially be exploited to steal user data. The report did not reveal details about the RCEs as the researchers are still in the process of reporting them to LG in accordance with industry practices.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Gamers Nexus has called out LG for unsavory business practices. Earlier this year, the channel reported that several popular LG monitors were automatically installing a sketchy Windows app without permission. The monitors were also reportedly collecting user data and displaying pop-up ads for McAfee antivirus and other software.

Microsoft’s executive VP of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, later confirmed that Redmond had to intervene and force LG to remove the controversial app from the Windows Store after a massive outcry from users complaining about the pop-up ads and automatic app installations.

LG has since denied most of the claims. In a statement to Tom’s Hardware, it said:

The claims made in the recently published video are not true. LG TVs process voice data only when the voice button on the remote control is pressed and held, or when a wake word such as ‘Hi LG’ is recognized after the user has activated the Far-Field voice recognition feature. Other than these instances, the TVs do not collect or record ambient conversations. (If the wake word is not recognized, no voice data is transmitted to the server; the audio processing for wake word detection is performed locally on the device and is immediately deleted.)

Additionally, to provide smart TV functionalities, LG TVs feature the ability to scan for and connect to nearby devices on the same network. This is a standard function commonly provided by smart TVs and smart home devices.

Account Recovery Is the New Attack Path

For years, security teams have been making account takeover harder. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) added crucial protection to password-only authentication, while conditional access and device trust add further checks before users can reach sensitive systems.

However, these controls give attackers a reason to look for another route. Some attacks that are becoming increasingly common target the processes around authentication mechanisms, in particular account recovery. After all, why steal a user’s second factor if you can convince someone with the rights to manage it to replace it for you?

That makes the service desk more than a support function. It makes it part of the organization’s identity security boundary.

MFA Has Raised the Cost of Account Takeover

Even if an attacker captures a user’s credentials, MFA means a second authentication factor still stands between them and the account.

Further strengthening that barrier is the fact that many organizations are moving away from weaker factors such as SMS and toward authenticator apps, FIDO security keys and passkeys. Phishing-resistant authentication can make credential theft considerably harder to turn into account access, while conditional access and device trust add further checks based on factors such as the device, location and context of a login.

None of this means that MFA has failed. In many cases, the opposite is true: MFA works well enough that attackers have an incentive to find ways around it rather than attack it head-on.

That can mean stealing session tokens, abusing existing authenticated sessions or targeting authentication processes that sit outside the normal login flow. And one of the most important processes is account recovery.

Every strong authentication system still needs an answer to a routine problem: what happens when a legitimate employee loses access to it? At that point, the security of the account may depend less on the MFA technology protecting it and more on the process used to reset it.

When the Recovery Path Becomes the Attack Path

Employees replace phones, lose security keys, change numbers, damage devices, and forget credentials. Sometimes an authenticator simply becomes unavailable.

When self-service recovery is no longer possible, the service desk typically becomes the route back into the account.

Depending on the organization and the user’s privileges, an agent may be able to reset a password or MFA, remove an existing authentication method, issue temporary credentials, approve registration of a new authenticator, or otherwise restore access.

While these are necessary support functions, from a security perspective, they are also sensitive identity-management actions. That makes the verification step before the reset critical. If a user normally must satisfy multiple authentication factors to access an account but only has to answer a handful of questions to replace those factors, the recovery process can become the weaker path to the same identity.

This is increasingly being treated as an identity assurance problem rather than a conventional help desk problem. Microsoft, for example, now describes account recovery in Entra ID as a “high-assurance” process and contrasts traditional question-based help desk recovery with stronger identity verification designed to re-establish trust before access is restored.

The principle is simple: the process used to replace an authentication method should provide confidence that the person requesting the change is the person who owns the account. If it doesn’t, the recovery path can quickly become the attack path.

Recent Attacks Highlight the Risk

The tactics employed by hacking collective Scattered Spider are a clear example of the challenge service desks face. A joint advisory from CISA, the FBI and international partners say the group has posed as employees to persuade IT and help desk staff to reset passwords and transfer MFA to attacker-controlled devices.

The same advisory notes that attackers may spend several calls learning about an organization’s password-reset process before attempting the takeover.

The 2025 attack on Marks & Spencer shows how damaging sophisticated impersonation can be. Scattered Spider impersonated an employee to trick a third-party contractor into resetting their password to gain access. From there, the group compromised more accounts and eventually deployed ransomware across the retailer’s network.

M&S chairman Archie Norman told Parliament that the incident was expected to reduce profit by around £300 million before recoveries, underlining how a successful identity-focused social engineering attack can become a major business incident.

Make Identity Verification Part of the Service Desk Workflow

Closing this gap means moving the service desk away from questions such as “Does this person sound legitimate?” or “Can they answer our verification questions?” and toward a stronger one: Can this person securely prove they are the employee associated with the account?

Flex Titanium has flattened the crease into a line that is only noticeable if you look for it. The aspect ratio is close to 4:3 in portrait and 16:10 in landscape, which is suitable for documents and video without the skinny-book cut that older Folds imposed on everything. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, so zooming beyond 2x is digital, and the main sensor is smaller than the 200-megapixel units on the S26 Ultra and Fold8 Ultra. Can You Have Two Insurance Policies For One Car? Here’s What The Law Says

Many drivers have been there — a sudden fender bender or a loss of control on a rainy day. When the worst happens, we rely on auto insurance to cover the damage. Almost every state requires auto insurance by law, and for good reason. If you cause an accident or damage another person’s property, you’re responsible. Even a minor accident can cause thousands in repair bills. You could also be on the hook for hospital and legal bills. If you finance your vehicle when you buy it, of course, your lender will likely require you to carry a certain amount of insurance coverage.

One policy makes sense, even if you don’t go with the highest-ranked auto insurance company, but what about two? If you use your vehicle for both work and pleasure or you want to cover expensive aftermarket additions that your standard policy excludes, you may have thought about purchasing a second policy. While no U.S. law prohibits carrying multiple insurance policies on one vehicle, paying for both is usually a waste of money.

Sometimes we accidentally end up carrying multiple policies for the same vehicle — it’s especially common when you change insurance companies and forget to cancel your old policy. Accidental or otherwise, you cannot make two claims after an accident to get double the payout. If you try, it could slow down the payout process, and both insurers may try to claim the other is responsible. Double-insuring may also go against an insurer’s policies, and could lead to you losing perks like good driver or bundling discounts.

What to know, and when two policies actually makes sense

Even when the process of filing an insurance claim goes smoothly, a payout takes time. If you have more than one insurance policy on your vehicle, it may delay the process even further. Your insurance companies will do something called a coordination of benefits to determine which policy is responsible for the claim. Unless one company pays first and the second company only pays for anything the first company did not cover, you’re committing insurance fraud.

Ultimately, paying two premiums for two insurance policies makes little sense for most drivers. You’re paying for double the coverage but only receiving benefits from one policy when you file a claim. If your insurance policy doesn’t offer all the coverage you need or want, you should shop around for a better policy rather than purchasing a second. Stay away from cheap car insurance, which may come with high deductibles, minimal coverage, and poor claims support.

For most people, the only instance when buying two policies makes sense is if you’re transitioning from one policy to another and need to fill a coverage gap. To avoid accidentally paying for two policies at once, know when the cancellation of your old policy is effective and start your new policy with as little overlap as possible. If you and your spouse share a vehicle, you only need one policy, with both of you listed as drivers. If you share a car with a significant other who doesn’t live with you, they likely fall under your insurance company’s permissive use clause, which lets them drive your vehicle with your consent, eliminating the need for a second policy.
