The award follows more than a decade of organisational change at the sixth form.

After a difficult period in 2013, leaders set out a long-term improvement plan that led to an Outstanding Ofsted rating in 2017 and academic results that have since remained above national averages.

According to internal figures, more than 97 per cent of employees describe DSFC as a positive workplace.

IiP judges noted the centre’s “clear plan for the future” and said it had “been on an amazing journey and seen great success.”

Principal Jo Lain said the sixth form has worked with Investors in People for more than a decade “to create a workplace that values its staff”, and welcomed the national recognition.

Durham Sixth Form Centre currently ranks in the top fifth of schools nationally for academic progress and in the top two per cent for applied general attainment, according to its latest performance data.
