Erling Haaland: The night the future Manchester City striker left Northern Ireland goalless
Aside from his reaction to Manchester City’s draw with Arsenal this month, the years since have seen the back-to-back Premier League Golden Boot winner develop something of a robotic reputation but, even at that stage, Doyle struggled to get a rise from the emerging star.
“I did try to wind him up, give him a wee bit off the ball, but it didn’t bother him one bit.
“A proper professional, I suppose. I wouldn’t say cool and calm, but you just didn’t get a reaction out of him.
“He just looked at you to say, ‘who are you?’ sort of thing. Which was right – who am I?”
While Doyle remembers tackling the teenager being akin to “hitting a brick wall”, all those scouts descending upon the game were able to get an unexpected jump on the traffic during a game Glenavon won 2-1 to claim a first European victory in 23 years.
“I had to be up for it and ready. I knew what was coming.
“But he didn’t get much of a kick. Our pitch wasn’t the best, not like at Glenavon now, and maybe that played a part.
“He was moved to left wing for the last 20 minutes of the game and 10 minutes later he got taken off.”
When leaving Glenavon after seven years this summer, the club’s statement on Doyle’s departure referenced his marking job on Haaland, although the man himself is quick to stress he cannot take sole credit for the burgeoning superstar’s early exit six summers ago.
With a laugh, however, he admits that modesty does not always extend to social situations when he is “quick to remind the boys in the bar” watching Haaland now of the day he got the better of the world’s most feared striker.

Track Cycling World Championships: GB’s Anna Morris wins women’s individual pursuit gold
Great Britain’s Anna Morris claimed gold in the women’s individual pursuit on the penultimate day of the Track Cycling World Championships in Denmark.
The 29-year-old trailed Chloe Dygert with three laps to go, but was able to overhaul the American in the final quarter of the race to win by just over three-tenths of a second in a time of three minutes 16.56 seconds.
She told BBC Sport: “I’m in disbelief. Chloe posted an incredible time in the qualifying round and I did a huge personal best, so I wasn’t sure how much more I had to give.
“I felt like I could potentially have gone a bit harder at the start so I went out a little bit harder [in the final], tried to keep it as controlled as I could, and at the end I could hear my team-mates and coach screaming, so I knew I must be close [to winning].
“The calibre of rider that Chloe is, I didn’t think I had much of a chance, so it just shows that if you dig deep and see what you’ve got, sometimes you do surprise yourself.”
Also in Ballerup on Saturday, Sophie Capewell and Katy Marchant took silver and bronze respectively in the women’s 500m time trial, while Katie Archibald and Neah Evans won bronze in the women’s madison.

Sir Chris Hoy’s wife diagnosed with incurable MS as Olympic hero reveals ‘terminal’ cancer
SIR Chris Hoy revealed his wife has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis as the Scots Olympic legend announced his cancer is terminal.
Just weeks before the Scots cyclist was told he had up to four years left to live, Hoy’s wife Sarra, 44, was diagnosed with incurable MS.
Faced with the shock news, the couple admitted they have not yet told their two children, aged seven and 10, about Sarra’s diagnosis.
Sir Chris told The Sunday Times: “I never want to lie to them. But there are certain things you don’t need to tell them straight away.”
However, the young kids have been made aware of the full extent of their father’s illness.
Sir Chris revealed he tells them “Daddy will get more treatment and we will deal with it as it comes.”
For Sarra’s treatment, Hoy also told of how the couple were given a choice between a lower-risk but less effective treatment and a riskier but more effective option.
They opted for the low-risk course of action.
MS is a degenerative and incurable disease.
It can affect the brain or spinal cord and impair vision and movement.
The cycling legend explained that on a bad day, his wife can struggle to complete simple everyday tasks like fitting a key in the door.
But he says she “loves running” and gym classes and stays positive by refusing to pay heed to her condition.
Hoy added: “She says all the time, ‘How lucky are we? We both have incurable illnesses for which there is some treatment. Not every disease has that. It could be a lot worse.’ ”
This news comes as the Scots cycling hero revealed his cancer is terminal.
The six-time Olympic champion, 48, announced back in February that he was battling the disease.
But Sir Chris knew back then that his cancer was terminal.
A tumour was found in his shoulder last year and a scan later found the primary cancer in his prostate.
Now, the prostate cancer has metastasised to his bones.
Looking back on Sir Chris Hoy’s career

- London 2012 Triumph: Hoy added two more gold medals to his tally at the 2012 London Olympics in the team sprint and keirin, bringing his total Olympic golds to six.
- World Championships: Hoy has also been a dominant force at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, securing 11 world titles over his career.
- Keirin Specialisation: Hoy is particularly renowned for his skill in the keirin, a track cycling event originating from Japan.
- Retirement: Hoy announced his retirement from competitive cycling in April 2013, ending a glittering career that spanned over a decade.
- Knighthood: In recognition of his services to cycling, Hoy was knighted in 2009, becoming Sir Chris Hoy.
- Post-Retirement Ventures: After retiring, Hoy has been involved in various ventures, including motorsport, media work, and promoting cycling and healthy living.

UFC Vegas 99 bonuses: Anthony Hernandez earns lone Performance of the Night after battering Michel Pereira
Anthony Hernandez earned the biggest win of his career and another $50,000 to boot.
Hernandez dominated Michel Pereira in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 99 card at the UFC APEX en route to a fifth-round TKO win. Pereira landed a big flurry early on, but for the next 20-plus minutes, it was “Fluffy” wearing Pereira down with relentless pressure, battering and bloodying the exciting standup fighter throughout the contest.
The just-turned 31-year-old earned the lone Performance of the Night bonus for his outstanding showing.
The UFC did award a Fight of the Night, and to the surprise of very few, it went to the featherweight clash between Darren Elkins and Daniel Pineda. Elkins won a unanimous decision, and his first career Fight of the Night bonus, while Pineda announced his retirement in defeat. It was the second time Pineda earned the award in his UFC career. Both fighters go home with an extra $50,000.
