NCAA baseball tournament 2026: Bracket and schedule for regionals, road to CWS

Published

on

The battle for college baseball’s national championship heats up this week with the start of the NCAA tournament, and the selection committee unveiled the 64 teams in contention for the title on Monday.

After it cruised through an increasingly competitive Big Ten and maintained a No. 1 ranking during the entire regular season, UCLA secured the top overall seed and the right to home-field advantage through the super regional round. The Bruins have company in the hunt for a College World Series crown, though, as each of the power conferences boasts multiple top-16 national seeds. No. 2 Georgia Tech from the ACC and No. 3 Georgia from the SEC present the biggest threats to John Savage’s club.

New this year is the seeding of the top 32 teams in the bracket. While there are no changes to hosting rights for the top 16 national seeds in the regional round and top eight in the supers, the expansion of the seeding process brings more transparency to the selection committee’s bracketing process and guarantees (on paper, at least) more favorable paths for the nation’s most prolific teams.

The journey to Omaha, Nebraska, begins Friday across 16 regional sites. Super regionals ensue the following weekend and set the stage for the CWS, which kicks off on June 12 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

Below are the regional pairings, takeaways from the bracket unveil and odds for the most prominent national championship contenders.

Nebraska to host “regional of death”

Congratulations are in order for Nebraska, which secured hosting duties for the first time since 2008. Haymarket Park promises to deliver a special atmosphere. The Cornhuskers’ reward for playing on their home turf, however, is arguably the toughest regional field of them all. In order to advance beyond the first weekend, they will need to get past an Ole Miss squad whose pitching staff is more emblematic of a top-16 national seed rather than a regional No. 2 and an Arizona State lineup that hits the cover off the baseball.

Not only is the Lincoln Regional stacked with three realistic winners, but the team that emerges as the victor is likely to face a road super regional at Auburn. This path to Omaha is as tough as they come in 2026.

Mississippi State wins host bubble battle

A few fanbases ought to think there was a dereliction of duty on the selection committee’s part with regard to the hosting bubble. Those hoping to “call the hogs” in Fayetteville were particularly distressed when the committee unveiled the 16 host sites. Oregon State, a consensus top-10 team in the human polls, also missed out. USC finished ninth in RPI but must hit the road this weekend.

Meanwhile, Mississippi State secured the No. 14 national seed despite going 4-6 in SEC series, losing each of its last three weekends and being swept in two others. They also lost a head-to-head series with the Razorbacks.

“Mississippi State had a very strong conference schedule, grade-A RPI when you look at all the metrics they had,” selection committee chair Michael Alford said on ESPN. “And it was more than that. It wasn’t really comparing Arkansas to Mississippi State. You had West Virginia in the fold, and they really did a good job in their conference tournament, finishing second in a very competitive conference. You look at Kansas; we rewarded them. They won the regular season and the conference title.”

SEC reigns supreme in otherwise balanced field

Each of the four power conferences has multiple regional sites, and seven leagues sent at least two teams into the field. Every corner of the country will be represented well, and all of the biggest conferences should feel as though they have real shots to reach the CWS.

Still, the SEC remains the conference to beat. Each of the last six national champions hailed from the dominant league, and nearly half of the top 16 national seeds this year call the SEC home.

Odds via FanDuel

UCLA (+500)

No team in the D1Baseball rankings era (since 2015) had ever gone wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team until UCLA accomplished the feat this season. A loaded lineup, including projected top overall MLB Draft pick Roch Cholowsky, made the Bruins an obvious force that delivered on lofty regular-season expectations. Already at 51 wins, they enter the tournament having lost just two Big Ten games. A relative lack of elite starting pitching could catch up to them eventually, but the bullpen is as strong as they come. If staff ace Logan Reddemann returns to the mound after a five-week bout with arm fatigue, the rotation will no longer be much of a question mark.

Georgia Tech (+650)

It was obvious from the first series of the year that Georgia Tech boasted the most explosive bats in the nation. The Yellow Jackets drove across 10 or more runs in each of their first six games and remained hot all season to post the sport’s highest team batting average (.358), OPS (1.105) and run total (603). The star tandem of Vahn Lackey and Jarren Advincula spearheaded that offense and more than made up for some inconsistent pitching on the back end of the rotation, and guided this program to its second consecutive ACC title and first conference tournament trophy since 2014.

Texas (+750)

Dylan Volantis’ move out of the bullpen and into the Friday night starter role is a credit to Texas’ top-three pitching staff in the SEC. The reigning National Freshman of the Year enters the tournament with the fourth-best ERA among qualified pitchers at 2.00 and anchors a rotation that stymied elite offenses. While Texas leaned on its starting pitchers to open the season at 16-0 and win all but two series, an offense prone to droughts and a volatile bullpen limits the Longhorns’ margin for error in pursuit of its first national championship under Jim Schlossnagle.

Georgia (+1200)

In an unpredictable SEC where seemingly any team could and did sweep any other, Georgia emerged as the commanding frontrunner to win the league by 3.5 games. The Bulldogs went 5-0 in road series, which quieted any concerns about their strength of schedule after they played one of the weakest non-conference slates in the Power Four. The lineup is absurdly strong, even with mashing outfielder Henry Allen suffering a season-ending knee injury on May 1. While that loss would hamstring most teams, the Bulldogs went 10-1 without him and scored at least 11 runs in their first five Allen-less contests.

Auburn (+1400)

Between drawing most of the SEC’s top teams and playing the 10th-toughest non-conference schedule in America, Auburn posted the No. 1 strength of schedule in college baseball this season. To win 38 games against a slate that difficult is a commendable feat and one that earned the Tigers the No. 4 national seed. Chase Fralick is one of the biggest reasons why Auburn came away from that gauntlet relatively unscathed. In what has been dubbed “the year of the catcher” nationally, Fralick stands among the best at his position with a 1.009 OPS and 14 home runs.

North Carolina (+1400)

If North Carolina finally breaks through for its first national championship, the pitching staff will be the catalyst. This is arguably the deepest staff in the sport — one that includes a true ace in Jason DeCaro, a solid weekend trio, dominant midweek starters and tremendous young bullpen arms like freshman Caden Glauber and sophomore Walker Duffie. That staff neutralized Georgia Tech’s nation-leading offense to win the regular-season series, showcasing the Tar Heels’ championship ceiling. It also has a top-10 defense by fielding percentage, which makes UNC as elite in run prevention as any team in the field.

Texas A&M (+2200)

Texas A&M suffered its first shutout loss of the campaign in its lone SEC Tournament outing, but that result was not indicative of the tremendous season-long numbers its offense posted. The Aggies rank fifth nationally with a .988 team OPS and feature seven players with individual OPSs of 1.000 or better. Veterans Gavin Grahovac and Caden Sorrell stir the pot for one of the deepest lineups in baseball. The question — and it is a big one — is whether the arms can prevent enough runs to sustain a push to Omaha.

Florida (+2200)

Sophomore Aidan King, with his league-best 0.93 WHIP in the regular season, became the first underclassman in Florida history to win the SEC Pitcher of the Year award. He leads a fantastic pitching staff that boasts electric heat, and that ranks eighth nationally in strikeouts. The Gator bats can lag behind against tougher competition, but they rarely need to produce more than a small handful of runs to win.

Mississippi State (+2200)

Mississippi State is a prime example of how playing in the SEC greatly increases a team’s margin for error when it comes to bracket placement. The Bulldogs lost more conference series (six) than they won (four) and went a mediocre 13-17 against Quad 1 and Quad 2 opponents, but because their strength of schedule was so bold, they secured a home regional with room to spare. Their floor is extremely high, so a CWS berth is certainly attainable. They will need to take things to another level if they are to win the whole thing, though.

Scottie Thompson once again proved why Barangay Ginebra continues to lean on him in big moments.

Thompson fired 25 points and sparked a decisive second-half turnaround as Ginebra defeated Rain or Shine, 103-98, on Sunday night to seize a 2-1 lead in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series at Mall of Asia Arena.

The veteran guard knocked down five three-pointers and added seven rebounds, two assists and three steals as the Gin Kings recovered from an eight-point halftime deficit and withstood a late Rain or Shine rally before a crowd of more than 13,000.

“There’s nobody better than a guy who comes out and does his job literally every game,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said of Thompson. “He does all the stuff that no one else wants to do. It’s amazing to watch day in and day out.”

Wednesday game

Justin Brownlee delivered 24 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, while RJ Abarrientos chipped in 17 points and five assists despite ditching a protective mask after suffering a nose injury earlier in the series.

Ginebra can move within a victory of another Finals appearance when the best-of-seven series resumes Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

And Thompson should play a key role in that match, too. Cone knows, having watched the do-it-all guard work hard even during practice.

“I’ve had the opportunity for 10 years to watch him do that every day, every game,” Cone said. “He just comes to work every day.”

“I tell you, he does it every practice, too. He comes out and he does his job. He does all the stuff that no one else wants to do. It’s just amazing to watch that day in and day out,” he added.

Thompson is averaging 19 points on 51-percent shooting while also contributing 6.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and one steal per game in the semifinals.

Rain or Shine looked poised to regain control of the series after a blistering start led by Andrei Caracut, who scored all 15 of his points in the opening quarter on five three-pointers.

‘Explosive diarrhea’

The Elasto Painters also welcomed back Caelan Tiongson, who saw action after battling what coach Yeng Guiao described as “explosive diarrhea.”

Tiongson and Jaylen Johnson scored 23 points each and helped Rain or Shine build an early cushion, but Ginebra gradually turned the game around behind Thompson’s outside shooting and Brownlee’s steady playmaking.

Amanda Anisimova needed some time to shake off the rust on Monday during her first-round match at the French Open.

It was nine weeks to the day that Anisimova last played a competitive match. But once the No. 6 seed found her form, she rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over France’s Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah on a scorching hot day in Paris.

Anisimova had 24 winners and 24 unforced errors and needed just 69 minutes to complete the victory.

Anisimova’s hiatus was due to a left wrist injury that she described as “nothing too serious.” Her last action was at the Miami Open and on Monday, she was happy to be running around the court at Roland Garros.

“I tried to not really overthink anything,” Anisimova said. “I was super excited to be here, to be fit to play, honestly, and that was the only thing I really thought about is what a great opportunity. … I’m just super relieved that all is good and that I’m ready to play.”

Rakotomanga Rajaonah had 11 winners and 19 unforced errors in defeat.

Anisimova next plays Austria’s Julia Grabher, who registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova.

No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and No. 3 Iga Swiatek rolled to straight-set wins.

Rybakina had 27 winners and 27 unforced errors while beating Slovenia’s Veronika Erjavec 6-2, 6-2. Swiatek carded 17 winners and 16 unforced errors in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Australia’s Emerson Jones.

Swiatek would have preferred the temperatures weren’t in the low 90s, atypical weather for Paris in May.

She said the heat couldn’t be compared to when the Summer Olympics were held in Paris in late July and early August of 2024.

“It is much different,” Swiatek said. “Maybe it was that hot in the Olympics, but the balls were different, so I wouldn’t treat it as the same tournament.”

No. 7 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine lost the first set and had to win a third-set tiebreaker to land a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory over Hungary’s Anna Bondar in two hours, 26 minutes.

Svitolina ended a two-match losing streak against Bondar and now leads the head-to-head competition, 3-2.

“When you are competing at your highest level, it’s all about the small details,” Svitolina said. “It’s physical freshness, it’s mental freshness and, you know, just being strong and collected in these moments.”

Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova took care of Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova 7-5, 6-2. Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, seeded No. 13, notched a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska.

Camila Osorio of Colombia upset No. 14 Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-4, and Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann knocked off Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, the No. 20 seed, 6-4, 6-4.

No. 23 Elise Mertens of Belgium beat Germany’s Tatjana Maria 7-5, 6-0 and No. 28 Anastasia Potapova of Russia was a 6-1, 6-2 winner of Maya Joint of Australia.

Meanwhile, American Alycia Parks upset No. 24 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada 6-4, 6-4, with a 26-10 edge in total winners. No. 25 seed Diana Shnaider of Russia had an easier time beating Mexico’s Renata Zarazua 6-4, 6-1.

No. 29 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ella Seidel of Germany. Swiss qualifier Susan Bandecchi beat No. 31 Cristina Bucsa of Spain 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

In other first-round matches, Poland’s Maja Chwalinska defeated China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-4, 6-0; Eva Lys of Germany defeated Croatia’s Petra Marcinko 6-3, 6-0; and Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Panna Udvardy of Hungary.

Daria Kasatkina of Australia defeated Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 6-4, 6-4. Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo beat France’s Leolia Jeanjean 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2), and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan knocked off Talia Gibson of Australia, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova outlasted Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and Brit Katie Boulter outlasted American Akasha Urhobo 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Claressa Shields vows to take action following MVP ‘event ban’

Published

on

Claressa Shields has threatened to take legal action and made an accusation of defamation in a fiery onslaught on social media.

Such allegations stem from the altercation between Shields and Alycia Baumgardner earlier this month, where both fighters were seen trading barbs in a hot-tempered exchange.

This took place during a Most Valuable Promotions Netflix event, headlined by Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano, where Jake Paul’s promotional outfit delivered a series of MMA contests.

But while action took place inside the cage, there was also a confrontation between two high-profile women’s boxers inside the VIP area.

Video footage appears to show Shields slapping Baumgardner following their war of words, to which MVP have responded by banning the ‘GWOAT’ from future events.

In an official statement, MVP described the incident as a physical “attack”, while Baumgardner wrote in her own statement that Shields’ behaviour was “unprovoked”.

It is important to highlight, too, that Baumgarner is signed to the flagship promotional organisation for women’s boxing, while Shields is still being promoted by Dmitry Salita.

Regardless of their allegiances, though, Shields has said in a social media clip that she plans to sue both MVP and Baumgardner.

“MVP does not run boxing, so let’s wrap that s*** up. I’m not banned from boxing. Actually, I have a huge fight announcement coming soon.

“Both of MVP and Baumgardner’s statements were lies – that is defamation.

“For those who saw the video of Baumgardner threatening me, telling me ‘I’ll beat your ass right now’, that is a threat.

“You saying everything that happened was completely unprovoked – that’s a lie. Now that I’m looking at statements, and I’m seeing people lie, it’s okay because I’m not gonna handle it with the law; I’m gonna handle it with the court.

“Ya’ll gonna get sued for defamation.”

As a five-weight world champion, Shields is regarded alongside Katie Taylor as the greatest female fighter of this generation, if not of all time.

MJ, Celtics, Ferguson And Noel Gallagher Lead Global Tributes as Guardiola Bids Farewell to Manchester City

Published

on

Tributes continue to pour in from across the sporting world following Pep Guardiola’s emotional farewell as Manchester City manager, with basketball legend Michael Jordan and NBA champions Boston Celtics among the high-profile names celebrating the Spaniard’s legacy.

Jordan stunned fans during City’s farewell event after appearing in a special tribute video congratulating Guardiola on what he called an “unbelievable career.”

“Hey Pep, this is Michael Jordan,” the six-time NBA champion said.

“I just want to congratulate you on an unbelievable career. Enjoy your retirement. Good luck on the links (golf). And keep them straight.”

The Boston Celtics also joined the tributes on social media, posting:

The NBA champions’ connection to Guardiola runs deeper than a congratulatory message.

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has repeatedly credited Guardiola for influencing his coaching philosophy during Boston’s championship-winning run. Mazzulla, a known admirer of Manchester City’s tactical structure and team culture, previously visited Guardiola in Manchester and maintained regular contact with the City boss during the Celtics’ title campaign.

After winning the NBA Finals, Mazzulla openly admitted Guardiola helped shape some of Boston’s tactical ideas.

“Pep helped me in transitions and how to move guys,” Mazzulla said while discussing how Boston solved Dallas’ defense during the Finals.

Mazzulla also praised Guardiola’s emphasis on “competitive joy” and togetherness, concepts he later implemented inside the Celtics locker room during their championship season.

The admiration between both coaches became one of the most fascinating cross-sport relationships in recent years. Guardiola attended Game 1 of the NBA Finals in Boston in 2024, while Mazzulla spent time observing Manchester City training sessions and exchanging ideas with the legendary football manager.

Guardiola’s influence has long stretched beyond football, with coaches from basketball, American football, rugby, and other elite sports often citing his leadership, tactical innovation, and team-building methods as inspiration.

The farewell celebration itself became a global sporting event, featuring emotional speeches, tributes from former players, celebrities, and musicians including lifelong Manchester City supporter Noel Gallagher.

After nearly a decade in charge, Guardiola departs Manchester City having transformed the club into one of football’s greatest modern dynasties — winning multiple Premier League titles, domestic trophies, and delivering the club’s first UEFA Champions League crown.

And judging by the tributes arriving from every corner of sport, Guardiola’s impact may ultimately be remembered as far bigger than football itself.

Wander Franco avoids prison after judge grants pardon in abuse retrial

Published

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Former Major League Baseball All-Star Wander Franco will avoid prison despite being found guilty for a second time on charges of sexual and psychological abuse of a minor. A Dominican Republic judge granted the 25-year-old shortstop a judicial pardon.

The decision overturned Franco’s original June 2025 conviction, in which he received a two-year suspended sentence.

The charges against Franco stemmed from a months-long relationship the ex-MLBer had with a 14-year-old girl beginning in December 2022, when the former top baseball prospect was 21 years old. The court ruled that while Franco was criminally responsible for his actions, he was also the victim of an extortion and blackmail scheme allegedly orchestrated by the minor’s mother.

Prosecutors pushed aggressively for a five-year prison sentence for the Tampa Bay Rays star, but the court ultimately handed its harshest punishment to the minor’s mother. Investigators previously uncovered more than $100,000 in cash during raids on her home tied to Franco.

DOMINICAN APPEALS COURT GRANTS NEW TRIAL FOR CONVICTED MLB STAR WANDER FRANCO IN SEXUAL ABUSE CASE

The mother was sentenced to 10 years in prison for money laundering and commercial sexual exploitation.

During the proceedings, prosecutors detailed how she allegedly used her daughter as a financial commodity, extracting thousands of dollars from the wealthy MLB player in exchange for consenting to the relationship.

While Franco avoided jail time, his pro baseball career in Major League Baseball is long over. He signed an 11-year, $182 million contract extension with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021.

Franco has not appeared in an MLB game since August 2023, when allegations involving the minor first exploded on social media.

He was later placed on administrative leave before MLB moved him to its restricted list, freezing both his salary and service time.

Under U.S. immigration law, the case likely qualifies as a “crime involving moral turpitude.”

Because Franco was not fully exonerated, immigration experts believe it will be nearly impossible for him to secure the work visa necessary to resume his Major League career.

The sentence also gives the Rays significant leverage financially.

With roughly $160 million remaining on Franco’s contract, the organization is under no obligation to pay him if he cannot obtain a visa or report to the team.

The Rays could also attempt to void the remainder of the deal under morality clauses commonly included in professional sports contracts.

MLB previously said it was waiting for the Dominican Republic’s legal process to conclude before issuing formal disciplinary action.

Mexico’s president says country has ‘no issue’ hosting Iran’s World Cup team amid US tensions

Published

on

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Monday that her country has “no issue” with hosting Iran‘s World Cup team, following the squad’s decision to move its training base from the United States to Mexico for the summer soccer competition.

The team is still scheduled to play its matches in the U.S., but its new base has been relocated to Tijuana, Mexico, situated just south of San Diego, California, as confirmed by Iran’s soccer federation.

President Sheinbaum clarified at a news conference Monday that she was told by a FIFA representative that the U.S. was reluctant to have the Iranian soccer team spend time outside of their scheduled games on U.S. territory.

“The United States doesn’t want the Iranian national team to stay overnight in the United States,” Sheinbaum told reporters. She said a FIFA representative had then asked, “Can they stay overnight in Mexico?”

Iran's soccer team is slated to play matches in Inglewood, California, against New Zealand on June 15

“And we said, ‘Yes, no problem. We have no issue with that’,” she said.

Iran’s soccer team is slated to play matches in Inglewood, California, against New Zealand on June 15 and against Belgium six days later, before facing Egypt on June 26 in Seattle.

Before the war broke out, the team was originally planned to set up its base in Tucson, Arizona. But with tensions simmering, Iran’s team moved its base to Tijuana in Mexico, Sheinbaum said, confirming an announcement by the Iranian federation over the weekend. The federation said the Iranians had received approval from FIFA, though it has not confirmed the move.

Teams use base camps to train before and after matches. This year’s World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 and will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The possibility of a move had simmered for months in the uncertainty surrounding the war in the Middle East and security concerns. U.S. sanctions on Iran were likely to only make the team’s stay in the U.S. more complex.

The U.S. State Department said in a statement on Monday that President Donald Trump had made it clear the Iranian team was welcome to participate in the tournament.

The department’s statement did not address where the team might stay, or Sheinbaum’s comments.

Sheinbaum said that her government was working with FIFA to hash out all the details before the competition.

World Cup 2026: Lionel Messi subbed due to muscle fatigue rather than injury

Published

on

Lionel Messi was substituted during Inter Miami’s latest Major League Soccer match because of “muscle fatigue” in his left hamstring, his club said on Monday.

There had been fears that the 2022 World Cup winner had suffered an injury during Inter Miami’s 6-4 win over Philadelphia Union.

However, the MLS club announced that medical tests showed that it was nothing more than “an overload associated with muscle fatigue”.

“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress,” Inter Miami said.

Having set up two of Miami’s four first-half goals on Sunday, Messi clutched his leg in the 73rd minute after taking a free-kick and was immediately withdrawn in the team’s final game before the World Cup break.

The 38-year-old went straight down the tunnel but appeared to be walking normally.

“He really was fatigued,” Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos said after the game when asked about Messi’s condition. “He was tired; the pitch was heavy and when in doubt, the standard approach is always to ensure you don’t take any risks.”

Messi has not formally confirmed he plans to play for defending champions Argentina in the World Cup, which begins on 11 June.

However, he is widely expected to make a record-equalling sixth appearance at a World Cup, with the tournament being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Argentina’s squad is due to be named next week, with their opening game against Algeria on 16 June.

Since moving to Miami in 2023, the Barcelona legend and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has carefully managed his workload but has still spent spells out of action with hamstring issues.

He has 12 goals and eight assists in 14 MLS games this season, only one behind the leader in each category, having scored a league-leading 29 goals and assisted 19 times in 28 games during the 2025 regular season.

Wander Franco found guilty of sexual abuse of a minor, but will not serve prison sentence

Published

on

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was found criminally responsible for the sexual and psychological abuse of a minor, a judge in the Dominican Republic ruled Monday, but he will not serve a sentence. Franco was given a judicial pardon because he was both a defendant and a victim of extortion in the case.

Franco was convicted of sexual abuse in a Dominican court last June and received a two-year suspended sentence. An appeals court reversed the decision, which led to Franco standing trial in front of a new panel of judges. Full sentencing will take place June 16. Even though he was pardoned, the conviction and sentence will still appear on Franco’s record.

“When we have the full sentence in hand, we will give you more details,” Franco’s lawyer, Teodosio Jáquez, told the Associated Press. “He was exempted from punishment and we think that’s fine, but we need to have the sentence in hand.”

In January 2024, prosecutors delivered roughly 600 pages of evidence alleging that Franco had a relationship with a 14-year-old girl for four months. He was also accused of providing the girl’s mother with cash payments and a car in exchange for her consenting to the relationship. The girl’s mother received a 10-year prison sentence.

Now that the criminal proceedings in the Dominican Republic are complete, Franco will be investigated by MLB and will face a suspension under the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Criminal charges or a conviction are not required for discipline under the domestic violence policy.

“We are aware of today’s verdict in the Wander Franco trial and will conclude our investigation at the appropriate time,” MLB said in a statement.

The longest suspension under the league’s domestic violence policy is the 324-game ban given to Trevor Bauer in April 2022, after multiple women accused him of sexual abuse. Bauer’s suspension was later reduced to 194 games on appeal.

Franco last played a game for the Rays on Aug. 12, 2023. He was on administrative leave from that day through July 10, 2024, when charges were filed. At that point, he was placed on the restricted list. Franco has not been paid nor received service time while on the restricted list. This is Year 5 of the 11-year, $182 million contract extension he signed in November 2021.

Now 25, Franco was once one of the brightest young stars in the game. He finished third in the 2021 AL Rookie of the Year voting despite playing only 70 games, and he was an All-Star in 2022.

Is London the greatest golf city in the world?

Published

on

Scotland and Ireland own the conversation, and for good reason. St. Andrews, Muirfield, Royal County Down, Royal Portrush and Ballybunion are as good as advertised — possibly better. The difficulty is that everyone knows it. Tee times open 18 months in advance, and the most coveted are gone within hours. A trip that once felt like a rite of passage now requires the planning of a military operation.

The answer is hiding in plain sight. England. Crazy? Stay with me.

London may be the greatest golf city in the world. Melbourne is in the conversation, but no other city comes close. Within 45 minutes of Heathrow are four courses on GOLF’s World Top 100 list, and unlike New York, Chicago or San Fran, where golf of this caliber sits behind private gates, every one is open to the visiting golfer.

On the outskirts of the capital, the Surrey Sandbelt takes five days to play. Settle in and the courses — Sunningdale Old and New, St. George’s Hill, Swinley Forest — are 30 minutes apart. The least celebrated of those is ranked No. 57 on our World list. Walton Heath (Old) sits within an hour, and its sibling New Course rewards those who squeeze it into their itinerary. Six world-class rounds, well within reach of the airport. For the golfer with time to spare, the three W’s —Worplesdon, Woking and West Hill — are must-plays too.

For those traveling as a couple, Central London has it all. The hotels are among the finest anywhere. The restaurant scene has long since earned its place among the world’s best. Globally renowned art galleries, shopping, theater and live sports abound. A non-golfing partner will not be kept wanting while you play England’s best.

Two hours from London, the Southeast coast will reset your preconceptions about English golf. Royal St. George’s, Royal Cinque Ports and Prince’s sit side by side on linksland that belongs in the same conversation as any in the British Isles. Add Rye and, for many, the Southeast becomes the whole reason for the trip.

The South may have the glamour, but it doesn’t have all the golf. Four hours north of London, Royal Liverpool, Royal Lytham and Royal Birkdale need no introduction. Hillside, Wallasey and Formby complete a stretch that would be celebrated the world over were it located almost anywhere else.

The tee sheets are open, the courses are in magnificent shape and the golfer who makes the trip to England leaves asking the same question: What took me so long?

Saudi billionaire made Man United takeover claim before talks over deal for club

A billionaire Saudi government official claimed in October last year that Manchester United were at an advanced stage of completing a deal to sell to a new investor

Turki Alalshikh is reportedly interested in Derby County after claiming last year that Manchester United were “at an advanced stage of completing a deal to sell to a new investor”.

Alalshikh, 44, called it “the best news” he heard that day, before adding: “I hope he’s better than the previous owners.” The billionaire clarified a day later: “I am not the investor, nor are they from my nation.

“I’m posting this as a fan who wishes the deal to happen, though it might not necessarily happen.” He described the “potential sale” as an “advanced negotiation phase with a new investor”.

The Telegraph now reports that Derby have conducted extensive discussions with Alalshikh about potentially backing the Championship side. However, the publication notes that the extent of the Saudi billionaire’s involvement remains uncertain.

The Independent Football Regulator is said to be conducting due diligence on the Saudi government official before approving any transaction. Alalshikh holds a ministerial position advising the Royal Court and heads the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), which oversees the nation’s entertainment industry.

CEO Today outlined in a profile published last year that his wealth exceeded £2billion as of 2024. However, it seems unlikely that he would assume a comparable position to the one he currently holds at the GEA.

Clowes is understood to plan to remain Derby chairman under any arrangement, even if he no longer holds a majority shareholding in the club. Alalshikh previously owned Egyptian Premier League club Pyramids and only relinquished Spanish second-tier outfit Almeria last summer after six years at the helm.

Months after that sale, Alalshikh dismissed reports connecting him with Bristol City last September. He said on X: “It is not true that I will buy Bristol City FC.”

Their chief executive, Tom Rawcliffe, however, confirmed weeks later that the club had conversations with Alalshikh. The Robins, like Derby, are receptive to investment as they seek promotion to the Premier League.

Following speculation about a potential interest in the Rams, apparently sparked by supporters noticing that Alalshikh had followed several fan accounts on X, he addressed those rumours on social media. He posted: “Derby,” followed by the person shrugging emoji.

It comes nearly a year after offloading Almeria to a Saudi investment group. The transaction occurred just weeks before he co-founded boxing promotion company Zuffa Boxing alongside UFC chief executive Dana White.

The billionaire’s ties to boxing stretch back almost three years, beginning with Tyson Fury’s bout against Francis Ngannou in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia had already played host to Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight title rematches with both Andy Ruiz Jr and Oleksandr Usyk.

Alalshikh has subsequently arranged several other marquee contests, including the undisputed heavyweight title bout between Fury and Usyk. Now operating through Zuffa, he remains active in staging events throughout the United Kingdom and the United States.
