Jake Johnson Was “Floored” by ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’s Finale

Jake Johnson staring ahead in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed

Summary

  • Jake Johnson defends Karl as a sympathetic dad, not a villain, trying to do what’s best for Hazel.
  • Johnson was completely shocked Karl lost custody.
  • Johnson’s The Dink is a joyfully silly, cameo-packed pickleball comedy that hits Apple TV July 24.

The finale of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is very much in line with the rest of the season in that it is completely unexpected. David J. Rosen‘s comedic thriller, which follows Tatiana Maslany‘s Paula, a newly single mom in the middle of a custody battle who also gets sucked into a deadly blackmail plot, is an Apple TV hidden gem. For 10 episodes, the electric series navigates annoying coworkers, online sex workers, and, of course, murder. But within that chaos is another form of chaos: a custody battle.

Serving as its own story within the broader narrative is Paula’s relationship with her ex Karl, played by Jake Johnson. Karl is inherently positioned as the antagonist in the series simply because he is the ex of the lead we are all rooting for. However, from his perspective, he’s really not doing anything wrong. He just wants what’s best for his daughter, Hazel (Nola Wallace), which he happens to think means moving to Boise with his new wife, Mallory (Jessy Hodges).

During this 1-on-1 interview with Collider, Jake Johnson dissects why he was surprised that Karl lost the custody battle in the finale, why Karl and Paula’s marriage collapsed, and how unfairly positioned Karl is in the story. Plus, he digs into The Dink, his upcoming Apple TV movie about pickleball, set for a July 24 release that was designed to be a joke-filled blast bursting with cameos.

‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’s Finale Was a Huge Surprise to Jake Johnson

“What [Karl’s] doing for his daughter, I think, is what he believes is in her best interest.”

COLLIDER: The last time we spoke, we talked about how this show is all about perspective, and I feel bad for Karl just because I really don’t think he’s doing anything wrong.

JAKE JOHNSON: You are part of the 1%, Emily. [Laughs]

Because I was really analyzing all of his actions and, especially in the finale, I was like, he really doesn’t do anything to be a jerk. (For the most part.) He’s really just trying to be a good dad.

JOHNSON: It’s funny you say that. The reaction from the audience has been really interesting for me. Obviously, I’m not any of the characters I play, so I don’t get my feelings involved, but I do find it intellectually interesting because I don’t think Karl’s doing anything wrong. If you look at Paula’s behavior from Karl’s point of view, he doesn’t watch the show. [Laughs] He doesn’t see everything. She’s probably murdered Caleb in Portland. She was involved in another murder. That’s all he knows. He has a child. [Laughs]

He just wants her to go skiing in Boise.

JOHNSON: [Laughs] Yeah! He’s willing to bring his ex who murdered a man.

So what has been the overwhelming response? Anti-Karl?

JOHNSON: As an actor, you only get to play the parts that are offered to you, so it’s nice to play somebody like Karl, who’s pretty “off type” for me. But those opportunities just don’t come very often. It’s been really funny to hear people’s responses and getting so angry at somebody who — when I read the scripts and I play him, I get why Paula doesn’t like him — but the anger from the audience has been interesting. They’re on Paula’s ride. It’s her show, so I get that, but I don’t think what he’s doing is all that bad. I think he’s doing what he thinks is best for his child.

And I feel like he does try to loosen the rope with Paula.

JOHNSON: I think he’s trying. I think he thinks she’s really irrational and really crazy.

How did you feel about his arc from the first episode to the finale? Did your relationship with Karl change at all? Did you see him differently by the end?

JOHNSON: Yeah, I felt like he was pretty sure-footed in all his decisions and who he was, and then somewhere in the middle, obviously, Karl and Mallory’s arc is quieter from Episode 6 to 8, around there. But it felt like all of a sudden it was shifting and Mallory was driving the train more. He kind of got lost in the sauce of making the decisions. By the end, Karl really was just trying to win, but he had stopped making all the decisions himself.

Do you think he was surprised at Mallory’s behavior? Because as soon as she switched out the files —

JOHNSON: Yes. I think from Karl’s point of view, he thinks he should have won by merit, and he’s not looking to fuck over his ex-wife and destroy his family. He does think she’s a great mom. I think he started to realize that his new partner was playing by a different set of rules. Where Karl, in my opinion, becomes more of a bad guy is that he didn’t know how to handle it when things went sideways. What he’s doing for his daughter, I think, is what he believes is in her best interest. But the decisions they make as a couple and what happens during the court case in trial… I think that all got away from Karl.

Do you think that after Paula gives that powerful speech that he changed his mind at all about anything?

JOHNSON: No. I think everything he said about Hazel is true. But they could also do that in Boise. [Laughs] It doesn’t mean she’s less of a mom. She’s part of you. She could be part of you elsewhere, too, in a more stable situation without murderers chasing you around. [Laughs]

Now I want a Karl spin-off. What’s his day-to-day like?

JOHNSON: Boring. Boring. It’s not a good TV show. He’s just a guy who’s married with kids in Boise.

A lot of potatoes, maybe.

Jake Johnson Says That the Events in Portland “Solidified” Things for Karl

“There was no turning back.”

The whole Portland storyline is really interesting to me because it really starts to weave in during that bottle episode where we get a new perspective on how their marriage fell apart. Do you have any of your own theories of what happened? Are you truly in the dark?

JOHNSON: As an actor, I always try to write a whole fake novel of backstory. I’ve gotten past that era of my acting career. I’ve aged out of it. But I still need to know at least what I think is reality. It’s why it’s easy for me to defend Karl because I’ve created what I believe to be the reality from his point of view.

If you watch those scenes from Karl’s point of view, Caleb isn’t a disgusting-looking bad guy. He’s a handsome dude with hipster tattoos who’s making a snarly face. If I’m Karl, and he’s doing this level of intensity, and the way Paula keeps looking at him, you’re like, “What’s going on here? Y’all good?” [Laughs] So, I think from Karl’s point of view, he’s pretty sure something is going on with Caleb and his wife. What that something is, he’s not sure of, but there is something happening between those two, whether it’s a relationship or whatever. But Karl’s not part of whatever’s happening between Paula and Caleb. But what’s happening between Paula and Caleb is something. But Karl, with his job and with his kid, he just doesn’t want to think about it.

Then when the car accident happens and Caleb is dead, the math isn’t mathing. And he’s like, “You were pulling into the driveway and then slammed into him?” And then Paula does what she does, where she just starts yelling. Just because you’re yelling… I’m not hearing more answers. I think deep down, he thinks, “Oh my God, she definitely killed him, probably on purpose, with my daughter in the back seat.” And, because she was drinking at the party, she is going to jail.

Then Mallory saves it for them with quick thinking decisions. I don’t think Karl was having an affair with Mallory yet. I think he goes, “This is a better decision for my daughter and for me.” So I think Portland solidified it, and there was no turning back.

I feel like him trying to piece together what’s going on with them, probably gave him more permission in his head.

JOHNSON: Yeah. And then I think that when that night occurred, he thought, “When the shit hits the fan, it’s Mallory helping me save my family, as Paula is creating the mess. What’s the best move going forward?”

Were you surprised at the verdict in the courtroom?

JOHNSON: I was.

I was really surprised.

JOHNSON: Yes. So, we obviously get the scripts first, because we have to memorize them. Couldn’t believe it. Couldn’t believe it. And then I was the only one. Most of the crew, everybody was like, “Yeah, asshole, Paula’s going to win.” I was floored. I kept going to David Rosen like, “What? She’s a murderer.” Then that courtroom sequence, all the actors were so good. It was such a fun thing to do, but I could not believe that Karl lost. I think it’s an injustice.

Tatiana Maslany Made Acting in ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’ Creatively Fulfilling

“She helps you, as an actor, get into character very fast.”

That scene when you’re giving Hazel’s bag back, the roles are completely reversed. You’re now in the mess trying to figure out your life. It’s a short scene, but how was it filming that back and forth with Tatiana? It was like an energy shift.

JOHNSON: I love acting with Tatiana. I think she is such a talented actress and she is so exciting to do scene work with.

Sometimes, truthfully, acting gets really boring and you’re working with somebody who’s not totally present and they’re thinking about the lines or they’re thinking about how it’s going to be in the end. You almost become producers in the scene together. And it’s fine. There’s a lot of ways to skin it in this game, but there’s nothing about it that’s creatively fulfilling. You’re just like, “You’re on your mark, I’m on mine, and we’re saying all the words. Who cares?”

Tatiana is the opposite. She is a live wire, and if you’re not paying attention, you’re going to get electrocuted. That scene and all the scenes, everything you prepared besides the memorization… throw it out the window, because she is going to do it differently than expected. What’s really exciting is she helps you as an actor get into character really fast because you’re now reacting to her, to Paula.

That scene for me was tricky because, even the reason Karl is mad at her in the pilot is not because she’s trying to do scheduling. It’s because a junkie called his phone and talked to his daughter and scared her. [Laughs] It’s not about the “eight minutes late.” It’s about that. Somebody called who clearly seemed to be on drugs.

In the end, she flips it on Karl because he’s saying, “Shall we get together and make a calendar?” [Laughs] I know the audience is going to cheer for Paula and say Karl really deserves it. But it’s just another example to me of like, all right, we live in upside-down world. I’m not understanding what’s happening. All he’s trying to do is say “Congratulations, you won.” He apologizes. He goes, “It was handled poorly on our end. I didn’t know what was going to happen.” And that is the truth. Karl has to deal with that mistake. That’s on him. He allowed that to happen. That’s a big fuck up.

Then he goes, “Okay, so you’re the winner. I’m the loser. How are we going to schedule our daughter’s life now?” And she goes, “Tighten your shit up.” I’m like, okay, this woman’s impossible. [Laughs] But I know Karl is a minority and the audience is going to go, “Yay, fuck him.” [Laughs] So, God bless, man.

That’s what makes him such an interesting character, because I feel like it could have easily… there could have been ways to make him come off as a jerk.

JOHNSON: I don’t think he’s a villain and I don’t care if everybody else does. As an actor playing him, I get that Paula thinks he’s a villain, but I personally think you can watch something and like a protagonist and see all sides. I might watch things differently than others. Mind you, she’s great, the show is great. For me, I’m like, “Let’s just look at the facts.” This is way more gray than black and white, guys. [Laughs]

I hope there’s a Season 2. What would you like to see explored in Karl? Where do you want his storyline to go? I want you to interact with more of the cast.

JOHNSON: I’ll be perfectly honest, for this specific job, it films in New York, and I’m LA-based. I was only out of LA for very minimal days. It’s one of the reasons why Karl’s character is small and kind of isolated. If it was an LA show, I would probably have more pitches.

But I don’t know. I love David Rosen’s writing. I love working with Jessy Hodges, who plays Mallory. I think she is so good and brought so much reality to the relationship in the world. I think she’s such a unique kind of step-mom vibe where that character for sure should have been the villain. But she never thought of herself as a villain. Even when she was doing villainous things, and I’d be like, “You’re the bad guy.” We would battle, where she’s like, “I think Karl might be the bad guy.” I’m like, “You’re the bad guy. You are for sure.” And so working with her was such a joy.

Working with Tatiana was so great. So anything for Season 2, if we got one, working with them again. But I don’t know what the storyline would be. I have no guesses. I’m not a “thriller” thinker. My spec scripts would never be thrillers. I don’t think that way. I was really sad when Dennis was killed because Murray Bartlett’s such a good actor. He’s excellent. I wish David Gordon Green did more. I liked working with him so much.

So, my big hopes for Season 2 would be David Gordon Green, more David Rosen, more Tatiana, more Jessy Hodges, and then whatever they come up with. Great writing staff.

Jake Johnson’s New Apple TV Comedy Movie ‘The Dink’ Is Pure Fun From Start to Finish

“It’s so funny how many opinions people have on pickleball.”

It’s such a fun, unpredictable show right until the very last frame. Let’s talk about The Dink. Do you actually play pickleball?

JOHNSON: No. The way it actually came to me was the writer, Sean Clements. He’s an old friend and one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met. We did Allen Gregory back in 2011 together — an animated show with Jonah Hill — and he’s so funny that we just kind of kept track of each other. We were in a poker game hosted by our friend, Jeff Baena, for years.

Then he and I were getting lunch and he said, “What are you looking to do?” And my guess was — this was probably two years ago at this point — our country was going to be in a weird point. And so I was like, “You know what I’d like to do? Something big with comedic set pieces. That was just fun. That wasn’t teaching anything, that didn’t have any big lesson, that was just 90 minutes of fun.”

And he goes, “Well, what do you think about pickleball?” And I go, “Literally nothing.” And he goes, “Then I got the movie for you.” [Laughs] He pitched me the story and what hooked me was that it was loosely based off his real life, where he’s an old tennis player who got hurt, wanted to come back, but his back kept getting fucked up, so he went to a Beverly Hills pickleball court and played with three women in their 70s. Because it’s pickleball, before you get really good… it’s all angles and shots, and it’s not a lot of athleticism. He’s like, “They were beating me and my ego was getting out of control, and they were talking shit.” Then I went and played, and I got beat by like two 70-year-old Asian ladies. One of them was being so mean about it.

This subculture is so funny and the script is really great. Ben Stiller produced it, so we got to pick his brain. Josh Greenbaum, one of my favorite directors and friends, came on board, and it was just a joy from start to finish. I think the movie’s great.

There are those who love pickleball and hate pickleball, so it’s funny already. It’s so funny how many opinions people have on pickleball. [Laughs.] This is a goofy game people are playing, and the people who are playing it are loving it. Because I played with a bunch of pros, too, you’ve got to be so good to be good. It’s not an easy game. It’s so hard. If you want to get good at it, there are levels to the game. People are like, “It’s so easy.” I’m like, “Yeah, it is, if you’re playing your grandparents, you goober, but if you’re playing some pros, they’re going to kill you.” [Laughs]

I forgot it was the Ben Stiller connection, because my head went to Dodgeball.

JOHNSON: Yes. So tonally, it is very different from Dodgeball. I think people are making that comparison and that is a mistake.

[Laughs] Good to know.

JOHNSON: It’s a way sweeter, more “Apple” movie. Mary Steenburgen plays a big part. Her character and my character have a great arc in it. It’s way more about friendship and growing up, with great laughs in it and great set pieces. Then it becomes a full on sports movie. Andy Roddick’s in it. It’s just, honest to God, it’s atype of movie that I love to make and that I love that’s out there. I do think it’s important that entertainment at times is just like ’70s music, and you could just go like, “That feels nice. Throw on the Doobie Brothers.” I love Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, but that shit ain’t Yacht Rock! [Laughs] There are so many funny people from Patton Oswalt to Aaron Chen, Lennon Parham, pop in with just laughs. Then you get Ed Harris being funny. Ed Harris was so funny and watching Ed Harris be funny, I was like, “Man, this just reminds me of movies in a way that I love movies.” I really hope people check it out. I think they’re going to love it.

I love when actors come in and destroy the scene and leave.

JOHNSON: That’s exactly right. Our movie is just packed. My character is moving the story along, and then throughout it… We have Fortune Feimster and Steve Berg — Steve Berg’s from the podcast We’re Here to Help — They come in and play either lovers or twins. They just play. There’s a five-minute sequence that’s just all for laughs. We tested and everybody just laughs the whole time. Then it ends and you’re moving on. That was literally just for fun.

Was there a lot of riffing on set?

JOHNSON: Yes. Tons of improv, Josh [Greenbaum] and Sean [Clements] are also pitching stuff. Stiller’s in scenes, too, so we were able to work with him and get his take on all the comedy, too. It was just so many great, funny people. Josh would give everybody freedom and then we’d have conversations. Chloe Fineman comes in, plays the ex, one of the funniest people I’ve ever been around. It was just kind of hitter after hitter. Everybody just kind of came in, crushed, and left. We all finished being like, “I don’t know how a movie could be more fun to make than that one.”

I hope there’s a director’s cut because I’m sure there is a lot of stuff that you had to cut. Kill your darlings.

JOHNSON: To such a crazy degree. We had a whole storyline in the middle that we had to cut. Like a good 20 minute sequence where Chloe and Dan Stevens are having sex in the back of a car while I’m driving. This scene was one of the funniest scenes I’d ever been part of. It’s one of those movies.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is on Apple TV. The Dink premieres on Apple TV July 24.

The Greatest Star Trek Icon Just Created A Vulgar Heavy Metal Band

The Greatest Star Trek Icon Just Created A Vulgar Heavy Metal Band

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

To this day, the greatest Star Trek icon is William Shatner. As Captain Kirk, he taught all of us the importance of boldly going where no man had gone before. In many ways, the actor has led his life by this philosophy: after dominating sci-fi, he killed it in other genres, including cop dramas, legal procedurals, documentaries, and so much more. Heck, he even headlined some infectiously charming commercials for Priceline. After a while, it looked like there might be no new worlds for Shatner to conquer. However, he’s about to boldly go into his own final frontier with the project of a lifetime: leading his own heavy metal band!

I’ll be the first to admit that this news feels like something out of a fever dream. But as William Shatner’s colleague Avery Brooks once said so memorably on Deep Space Nine, “it’s real!” Shatner has assembled a heavy metal band called The *uckers, and they will be making their debut on September 20th at Chicago’s Riot Fest. This will be the group’s first live performance, but in a truly bizarre twist, their appearance took nearly two decades to arrange.

Captain Kirk Gets Heavy

While Riot Fest is mostly about established musical acts, they have a charming tradition of trying to woo various celebrities into attending and performing. For example, after a decade of increasingly wacky invites, the festival eventually convinced Full House star John Stamos into performing alongside the Beach Boys. Similarly, Riot Fest has courted Shatner for the last 17 years. He finally said yes, but instead of performing with a well-known band, the Star Trek legend decided to assemble his own group, the equivalent of a musical away team.

Apparently, both the actor and the festival know how silly it is to have William Shatner playing heavy metal, and they collectively decided to lean into the humor by publishing a hilariously outlandish rider by the actor. The rider includes demands for Chicago to let Shatner co-anchor the local weather, name some local food after him, let him sing “Take Me Out To the Ball Game” at a baseball game, and name a boat after the actor that he can then captain.

Let’s Open Up This Pit!

Additionally, the rider requests a dressing room themed as “Shatner’s Shag Shack,” a bunch of adoptable puppies, an intro video from Gwar, and a bunch of Faygo that is not to be shared with the Insane Clown Posse. Oh, and he wants his artist’s golf cart replaced by a Delorean. Believe it or not, these are just a few of the winking, outrageous, and almost certainly fake demands.

Obviously, most of this is tongue-in-cheek, and as a Star Trek fan, it’s great to see Shatner playing along. But he also expressed some real sincerity in an official statement, writing that, “I’ve always believed that music, like space, is about exploration. Riot Fest is exactly the kind of place where anything can happen.” Continuing, he wrote, We’re bringing volume, intensity, and a few surprises. I can’t wait to share this experience with the fans.”

Somehow, Mr. Tambourine Man Returned

While Shatner is new to heavy metal, he’s not new to music, having released several albums in the past. Instead of taking on Riot Festival solo, the Star Trek actor assembled a band, The *uckers, consisting of several well-known musicians. This includes Marcus Nand on guitar, Phil Soussan on bass, Britt Lightning on guitar, and Fred Aching on drums. Together, they will play reimagined songs from Shatner’s musical history as well as songs from their amusingly titled debut album, What the F Is Heavy Metal. As he told People, “That’s the name of the album because I know nothing or didn’t know anything until I found out how little I do know.”

Want to see William Shatner make his inexplicable heavy metal debut? Be sure to save up your latinum and snag tickets to Chicago’s Riot Fest, which runs from September 18-20. On Instagram, the actor claims it will be an event that fans will want to tell their grandchildren about. We’re inclined to agree: one way or another, Shatner beaming into his metal era is something nobody will ever forget!

Sunny Hostin’s Plea Backfires During Son’s Police Encounter

Sunny Hostin at Apple TV+ 'The Morning Show' Season 4 TV Show Premiere

Sunny Hostin’s attempt to keep her son from receiving a trespassing citation is now playing out publicly, with newly released bodycam footage showing “The View” co-host repeatedly highlighting her television career, legal background, and her son’s Harvard education while speaking with police.

Despite Hostin’s efforts, officers moved forward with citing 24-year-old Gabriel Hostin after he was allegedly found on active Metro-North Railroad property in Westchester County, New York. Police explained that the alleged offense could have resulted in an arrest but said they reduced it to a trespassing violation because Gabriel cooperated and was not standing directly between the rails.

The June 16 encounter began after officers reportedly spotted Gabriel on the railroad right-of-way near New Rochelle.

Bodycam footage released by the MTA Police Department and obtained by TMZ shows officers approaching Gabriel on the tracks and temporarily placing him in handcuffs while he spoke with his mother over the phone.

After officers moved to a nearby street, Sunny arrived and immediately explained who she was. “My name is Sunny Hostin and I’m one of the co-hosts of ‘The View’ and I’m a former federal prosecutor,” she told police.

The 57-year-old television personality then emphasized her son’s background while arguing that he had made an innocent mistake. “That’s my son. He’s a Harvard graduate, he doesn’t have a criminal record,” Hostin said. “He knows. He’s a Harvard grad who teaches 4th grade geometry to South Bronx kids.”

Hostin also described Gabriel as “not a kid who’s ever in trouble” as she asked officers not to issue the citation.

Gabriel reportedly told officers that he had been running when he noticed a gravel incline that appeared suitable for hill training. He claimed he entered through an open gate and did not realize he had crossed onto restricted railroad property.

Police, however, said Gabriel had been found on the right-of-way of active tracks in an area with posted “No Trespassing” warnings. When an officer informed him that he would receive a trespassing citation, Gabriel asked, “Is this necessary?” The officer responded, “Yes.”

Gabriel then questioned what would happen if an officer chose not to issue the ticket. Police said their “hands were tied” and stressed that the situation could have ended more seriously. “Because it is an arrestable offense. I want to make that clear, okay?” one officer explained.

The officer said police were “dimming it down to a trespass violation” because Gabriel had not been standing in the gauge, the area between the rails, and had remained cooperative. “We know you’re not a criminal or anything like that, but our hands are tied with cameras everywhere,” the officer added.

While reports have described the incident as an arrest, TMZ previously reported that court records characterized it as a citation that did not involve an arrest. The newly released footage does show Gabriel being briefly handcuffed during the initial encounter.

Hostin Claims An Open Gate Caused The Confusion

The bodycam footage gives additional context to the argument Hostin later presented to prosecutors: that her son entered through an open gate and did not knowingly disregard a visible warning.

MTA Police also released an image of the gate and the “No Trespassing” sign Gabriel said he did not notice. Hostin has argued that because the gate was standing open, the sign attached to it was not readily visible as he entered the area.

The family also reportedly told officers that they had moved to the area within the past year, suggesting Gabriel was still unfamiliar with his surroundings. That explanation now sits at the center of Hostin’s request for the case to be dismissed. Rather than disputing that Gabriel entered railroad property, she is arguing that he lacked the intent to trespass and reasonably believed the incline was accessible.

Hostin, who previously worked as a federal prosecutor before becoming a legal analyst and joining “The View,” is listed as her son’s attorney in the case.

In a letter sent to Westchester Assistant District Attorney Amanda Greene, Hostin asked prosecutors to dismiss the citation before Gabriel’s scheduled July 31 court appearance. “My client is a 2025 Harvard University graduate with no criminal history or prior contact with the criminal justice system,” she wrote. “He is an avid runner and former Junior Olympian track athlete who was in the area training.”

Hostin said her son saw what appeared to be a gravel hill that he could use during his workout. “Although there was a gate at the entrance of the gravel incline, the gates were standing open,” she wrote. “The only ‘No Trespassing’ sign was affixed to the left gate and, because the gates were open, it was not visible to my client as he entered the property.”

“He reasonably believed the area was accessible and had no intention of entering private property unlawfully,” she added.

Hostin Argues The Citation Creates ‘Unnecessary Consequences’

Hostin concluded her letter by arguing that continuing the case would serve little public interest, particularly given her son’s clean record and cooperation with police. “Dismissal would avoid imposing unnecessary consequences on a young man who has demonstrated exceptional character and achievement and who poses no risk to the community,” she wrote.

The footage nevertheless shows that the same accomplishments Hostin cited in her legal request, including her son’s Harvard degree, community work, and lack of a criminal record, did not persuade officers to abandon the citation at the scene.

Gabriel is currently expected to appear in New Rochelle City Court on July 31.

New Snap Of Taylor Swift’s Massive Wedding Ring Surfaces

Published

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are continuing to enjoy married life while balancing their busy careers.

The couple recently attended the wedding of former NFL player JuJu Smith-Schuster and Laura Kruk, where fans caught a glimpse of Swift’s wedding band as she mingled with other WAGS in newly released photos.

As attention remains fixed on their relationship, Travis Kelce has already returned to offseason training ahead of his 14th NFL season.

Swift and Kelce recently stepped out to celebrate another couple’s big day, making one of their first public appearances since reportedly marrying earlier this month.

The newlyweds attended the wedding of former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and Laura Kruk at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, California.

Photos shared by fellow guest Jayda Kamryn Hawkins, the wife of NFL player Jaylinn Hawkins, offered fans a glimpse into the festivities.

In one candid snapshot on Instagram, Swift appeared relaxed and cheerful as she posed for a selfie late in the evening, seemingly wearing an oversized blazer believed to belong to Kelce. Another group mirror photo showed the singer standing off to the side rather than drawing attention to herself.

The outing also drew attention because it provided one of the clearest looks yet at Swift’s wedding band. She paired the ring with a strapless pink Markarian gown, while Kelce opted for a tailored gray suit as the pair appeared to be enjoying their first weeks as husband and wife.

In a photo shared by Vogue Magazine, the couple could be seen posing next to the bride and groom and other guests, with Swift’s massive ring in full view.

Swift’s wedding band joins the engagement ring Kelce used to propose, a striking old mine brilliant-cut diamond that has been estimated to be worth between $550,000 and $1 million.

Their own wedding came after months of speculation about their future together and reportedly brought together around 1,000 guests from across the worlds of sports, music, and entertainment.

Some of the biggest names at the nuptials, which were held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, included Paul McCartney, Tom Brady, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, Stevie Knicks, and Swift’s close pal, Selena Gomez.

However, rather than traditional bridal party roles, Swift’s brother Austin served as her man of honor, while Kelce’s brother Jason was best man.

The duo had a very emotional moment during their wedding when they read their vows to each other from little golden books, with guests claiming that Kelce was far more tearful than his bride.

How The Couple’s Romance Led To Their Wedding Day

The couple’s relationship traces back to July 2023, when Kelce attended Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Kansas City.

The NFL star revealed that he had hoped to meet the singer after the show and even brought along a friendship bracelet featuring his phone number, though he never managed to hand it to her.

Over the years, the pair have balanced demanding careers while supporting one another at concerts, sporting events, and public appearances. Despite the constant attention surrounding their relationship, Kelce has insisted their life together feels remarkably normal.

“Whenever I’m with her, it feels like we’re just regular people,” he previously told GQ. “When there is not a camera on us, we’re just two people that are in love.”

Fresh Off Wedding Bliss, Travis Kelce Focuses On Another Chiefs Run

While wedding celebrations continue to generate headlines, Kelce has already shifted his focus back to football. Less than two weeks after the ceremony, he was photographed dressed in a black T-shirt and gray workout shorts in Florida, signaling the start of preparations for another NFL season.

His return follows a March announcement that he would continue his playing career rather than retire.

Appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Kelce confirmed he would return for a 14th season with the Kansas City Chiefs. “Let’s go! Making another run at it, baby, and the Chiefs are making moves, Pat,” he said at the time.

Kelce also credited his relationship with Swift as part of the motivation behind his decision, explaining that they share the same passion for their respective careers and a desire to keep pursuing what they love.

“We share the same love for what we do,” he said, per People Magazine, adding, “I’m still in love with this game.”

Kelce’s most recent game came in December 2025, when the Kansas City Chiefs suffered a playoff defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers, marking the franchise’s earliest postseason exit in nearly a decade.

Before announcing his decision to continue playing, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Kelce’s contract was valued at a minimum of $12 million and could reach as much as $15 million through incentives.

According to ESPN, the veteran tight end informed the Chiefs of his plans to return before the start of free agency, ending months of speculation about a possible retirement.

Since then, attention has shifted from Kelce’s football future to his personal life, particularly his wedding to Taylor Swift.

Among those in attendance was ESPN personality Pat McAfee, who later described the celebration as one of the most “spectacular evenings” he has ever experienced. “The football world coming together with Hollywood and Nashville,” McAfee said. “It was the greatest night of all time.”

Lindsie Chrisley’s Surprising Comment After DUI Arrest

Published

on

Chrisley Knows Best star Todd Chrisley gets a parking ticket in LA

“Chrisley Knows Best” star Lindsie Chrisley has broken her silence on her May 2026 DUI arrest on a new episode of her “Coffee Convos” podcast.

The reality star, 36, made headlines earlier this year after she was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, attempting to evade police, reckless driving, and a slew of other charges while driving her car in Georgia.

According to Lindsie Chrisley, she’s dealt with mental health struggles over the last year, adding that it’s caused many problems in her personal life.

Speaking with MTV veteran Kailyn Lowry on their shared podcast, Lindsie said she takes her ongoing legal woes very seriously. She said that she hasn’t been able to comment publicly because she’s stayed off social media and deleted all the apps from her phone. “If people are sending me messages, I’m not getting them,” she said.

According to TMZ, Lindsie was arrested and booked in jail in Georgia in May 2026 before bonding out the next day. She told the publication that she was pulled over for speeding past a car on a two-lane road after trying to avoid being hit by another car that swerved to avoid an animal.

Lindsie Chrisley Has Struggled With Her Mental Health Over The Last Year

During the podcast episode, Lindsie admitted that she’s struggled with her mental health over the last year. She mentioned her life as a public figure, adding that while she enjoys what she does, it can cause issues for her and those around her.

“When you share so openly things about your personal life in your job, it can cause a lot of problems. I do think the emotional state that I’ve been in over the last year, some of that has been from investing in what listeners are saying or investing in what the Reddit folks are saying online and the conspiracy theories and all the things,” she said.

Lindsie further opened up about the situation on an episode of her “Southern Tea” podcast and asked the audience for “grace” as she navigates her ongoing legal troubles. While she couldn’t say much, Lindsie assured her listeners that she was taking her situation “very seriously.” As she prepares to deal with the matter head-on, Lindsie explained that her focus is on moving forward, growing, and “respecting” the legal process.

She also said that her arrest and subsequent legal problems have forced her to settle down and reflect on where she’s at in her life. “I do think that this was, kind of, a hard-stop moment for me to be like, ‘OK, everything needs to get in line and sh-t needs to be gotten in order because you cannot continue going down the path of operating off of heartbreak and betrayal and lack of confidence,’” she said.

“Like, you cannot continue carrying that every single day because I’m just going to sit in it.’ I think I’ve sat in it long enough. Not to make light of anything, but it was a great time-out for me,” she added.

Lindsie’s Ex-Boyfriend Was Arrested And Took A Bloody Mugshot

In addition to the DUI drama, Lindsie made headlines in April 2026 when her ex-boyfriend went viral due to his bloody mugshot. According to The Blast, Lindsie and her boyfriend allegedly got into a heated altercation that resulted in the man going “berserk” after Lindsie tried to leave.

A source said that her ex-boyfriend was the one who called local authorities, but due to the visible injuries on Lindsie’s body, he was the one arrested and booked on a count of aggravated assault. His mugshot made its rounds primarily because he looked disheveled and had a bloody streak running down the side of his face.

It was a surprising turn of events, given that, before that, the man had asked Lindsie’s father, Todd Chrisley, for her hand in marriage in a heartfelt Instagram post in July 2025.

And speaking of Todd, the reality star turned convicted felon previously said that he’s done with his eldest daughter, claiming that she’s hurt him and his family in immeasurable ways.

“I don’t know many ways you can spin this sh-t. I’m over it. I’m not talking about this stuff anymore,” Todd said on “Chrisley Confessions,” per The Blast. “It’s unfortunate that we have to get up to this again, and we have to start addressing the same sh-t that we’ve addressed for six years or longer.”

4 Best New TV Shows to Watch This Weekend (July 18-19)

Published

on

Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham in Ride or Die

This week’s new shows have a whole lot of action – both on and off the sports field.

At the top of Watch With Us’ binge list is Prime Video’s Ride or Die, which asks the question, “What would happen if Thelma & Louise were ass-kicking action heroes?”

Apple TV continues its hot streak with Lucky, a crime thriller starring one of Hollywood’s best young actresses, Anya Taylor-Joy.

And sports fans are in for a treat this weekend with the debut of Will Ferrell’s new Netflix comedy, The Hawk, the return of the football docuseries Quarterback and the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

‘Ride or Die’ Season 1 – Prime Video

Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham in Ride or Die

Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham in Ride or Die.
Prime Video

How well do you know your best friend? That’s what former attorney and now discontented housewife Debbie (Octavia Spencer) asks herself when her BFF for decades, Judith (Hannah Waddingham), reveals a secret she’s been hiding from her for years – she’s really an elite assassin! With Debbie’s life in jeopardy, Judith has no choice but to protect her friend the only way she knows how – by killing lots of people with knives, guns and even her bare hands.

It sounds like a setup for an entertaining action-comedy film, but Ride or Die is an eight-episode series, with each episode clocking in at around 50 minutes. That’s the show’s primary weakness – this story is really better served in a tightly placed, 100-minute movie. But it’s still worth streaming for its two charismatic stars, who are given ample opportunities to showcase their skills in comedy, drama and punching guys in the face. Spencer and Waddingham are clearly having fun playing their complicated characters, and you’ll have fun watching them.

‘Lucky’ Season 1 – Apple TV

Anya Taylor-Joy Lucky Apple TV

Anya Taylor-Joy in ‘Lucky’.
Apple TV

Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong (Anya Taylor-Joy) usually lives up to her name – she’s been lucky conning people out of money. But when she gets involved in a multi-million dollar heist that goes horribly wrong, her luck runs out – fast. With her cohort and husband, Cary (Drew Starkey), missing, and a mob boss, Priscilla (Annette Bening), who wants the money Lucky owes her yesterday, Lucky will have to rely on her wits and, yes, a little luck, to make it out alive.

Apple TV has been killing it this summer, with the horror-comedy Widow’s Bay reaping multiple 2026 Emmy nominations and the thriller Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed becoming one of this season’s most binge-worthy shows. Lucky is just as good – and addictive – as those shows, with a never-better Taylor-Joy sinking her teeth into a role that’s part action heroine, part femme fatale and all fun.
The first two episodes are streaming now, with each subsequent episode released every Wednesday until the season finale on August 19.

‘Quarterback’ Season 3 – Netflix

Since its debut in 2023, Netflix’s Quarterback series has captivated both sports fans and viewers who’ve never touched a pigskin in their lives. The show transcends its sport by focusing on the complex humans underneath the helmets and shoulder pads. Season 1 featured Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota, while season 2 showcased Joe Burrow, Jared Goff and Cousins.

In Quarterback season 3, four players are featured across its seven episodes, all streaming now on Netflix: Joe Flacco, Cam Ward, Baker Mayfield and Jayden Daniels. Some highlights include Ward’s journey as an NFL rookie during his debut season and football veteran Flacco navigating an unexpected trade from the Cleveland Brows to its rival team, the Cincinnati Bengals. In taking a look at the private lives of some of football’s biggest stars, Quarterback makes a compelling case that the more interesting drama happens off the field than on it.

‘The Hawk’ Season 1 – Netflix

Jimmy Tatro and Will Ferrell in The Hawk

Jimmy Tatro and Will Ferrell in The Hawk
Netflix

Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins (Will Ferrell) is all washed up. A veteran golf pro, he’s won almost every major tournament except one – the U.S. Open. Before he strikes his last golf ball, Lonnie wants to win the one significant trophy that’s eluded him, but his mediocre golf swing, combined with an in-his-prime rival, Golden Fisk (Luke Wilson), stands in his way. Can Lonnie win one last time?

While The Hawk has received mixed reviews from critics, it’s still worth watching to see Ferrell as an athlete still lost in his own ego. He’s supported by a terrific cast of newcomers and vets, including fellow SNL alum Molly Shannon, future Gorilla Grodd Jimmy Tatro and stand-up comedian Fortune Feimster.

Taylor Sheridan’s Hit Spy Thriller Returns With Its Deadliest Mission Yet

Published

on

Robyn Lively stands in an office building in Lioness

Even though he’s about to begin a new partnership with NBCUniversal, Taylor Sheridan remains the MVP of Paramount with his roster of popular shows. Sheridan first gained recognition as a writer with the films Sicario and Hell or High Water; the latter earned him an Oscar nomination. He went on to write and direct the third in this spiritually connected trilogy of neo-Western films, Wind River, and then pivoted to television with his magnum opus, Yellowstone. The show spawned a franchise that continues to this day, even though Sheridan reportedly no longer has a hands-on involvement in it. The Yellowstone franchise’s two latest installments, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, emerged as massive hits in their own right this year, while Sheridan continues to work on new seasons of his other titles. One of them is about to return with a new season in just a couple of weeks.

In addition to Yellowstone and its two prequels, 1883 and 1923, Sheridan has created several popular shows for Paramount+. The crime dramas Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown have been renewed for fourth and fifth seasons, respectively. Meanwhile, the neo-Western hit Landman has been renewed for a third installment, too. Sheridan’s most recent Paramount+ show, The Madison, received a Season 2 order even before the first batch of episodes premiered. However, the first returning series on Sheridan’s slate is a spy thriller headlined by the Oscar-winning Zoe Saldaña.

You are a Dutton — or you might as well be. You understand that some things are worth protecting at any cost, and that the modern world’s indifference to history, to land, to legacy, is not something you’re willing to accept quietly. You lead from the front, you carry your family’s weight without complaint, and when someone threatens what’s yours, you don’t escalate — you finish it. You’re not cruel. But you are absolute. In Yellowstone’s world, that combination of ferocity and loyalty doesn’t make you a villain. It makes you the only thing standing between everything that matters and everyone who wants to take it.

You thrive in the chaos of high-stakes negotiation, where the money is enormous, the margins are thin, and the wrong word in the wrong room can cost everyone everything. You’re a fixer — the person called when a situation is already on fire and needs someone with the nerve to walk into it. West Texas oil country rewards exactly what you are: sharp, adaptable, unsentimental, and absolutely clear-eyed about what people want and what they’ll do to get it. You’re not naive enough to think this world is fair. You’re smart enough to be the one deciding who it’s fair to.

You are a Dwight Manfredi — someone who has served their time, paid their dues, and arrived somewhere unexpected with nothing but their reputation and their wits. You adapt without losing yourself. You build loyalty through respect rather than fear, though you’re not above reminding people that the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Tulsa King is for people who are still standing when everyone assumed they’d be finished — who find, in an unfamiliar place, that they’re more capable than the world gave them credit for. You don’t need a throne. You build one, wherever you happen to land.

You carry the weight of a system that is broken by design, and you do it anyway — because someone has to, and because you’re the only one positioned to do it without the whole thing collapsing. Mike McLusky’s world is for people who are comfortable operating where there are no good options, only less catastrophic ones. You speak every language: law enforcement, criminal, political, human. That fluency makes you invaluable and it makes you a target. You’ve made your peace with both. Mayor of Kingstown belongs to people who understand that keeping the peace is not the same as being at peace — and who do the job regardless.

Taylor Sheridan’s Spy Thriller Will Face Off Against ‘The Agency’ on Paramount+

We’re talking, of course, about Lioness. The show premiered in 2023 and returned with a second season in 2024. The third season will premiere on August 2, and will offer fresh competition on Paramount+ to the streamer’s other spy title, The Agency. That show, headlined by Michael Fassbender, returned with a second season in June. Lioness also features Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly and LaMonica Garrett in supporting roles. The show received mixed-to-positive reviews, with the first season sitting at a 54% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes and the second season displaying a remarkable improvement with a 90% score.
