When police officers ambushed Johannes Kongsnes Natland in a hotel room in West Yorkshire in March last year, the teenager was found with two working guns, 19 rounds of live ammunition and £2,000 in cash.

When he saw officers at his door, he mimed shooting one of them before he was thrust against the wall and handcuffed. 

On Wednesday, the 19-year-old Norwegian, who worked part-time at a pizza restaurant, was found guilty of travelling to England to carry out a killing ordered by an international crime gang.

The teen from Stavanger, who had agreed to shoot an unknown person for €25,000 (£21,000), had previously sent messages to his girlfriend saying it ‘will be cool’ to ‘finally kill someone’.

The hit man was recruited by the Foxtrot Network, a Sweden-based gang infamous for pioneering the relatively new phenomenon of hiring teenage killers that Europol has called ‘violence-as-a-service’ (VaaS).

But the shadowy gang has spread across the border to Norway with its sphere of influence already felt on the streets of Britain. 

The Iran-linked gang has been terrorising Stockholm for years, recruiting children as young as 13 on social media to carry out acts of arson, murder and bombings.

The group is led by Swedish-Iraqi national Rawa Majid, 39, known as ‘the Kurdish Fox’, who rules the Scandinavian drug trade.

On March 15 last year, Natland sent a message to his girlfriend in a fit of excitement which said: ‘I’m going on a crazy mission.’

Two days later, he left home in Stavanger, south-west Norway, telling his mother he was going to play football.

Instead, he flew to Manchester to assassinate a target on behalf of Foxtrot for a payment of £21,000. 

He was arrested in a hotel room in Huddersfield hours before he was due to carry out the hit.

It seemed implausible. The baby-faced teenager came from a middle-class home in a safe town enriched by North Sea oil. He was a bright student, talented footballer and aspiring lawyer.

But in a two-week trial at the Old Bailey, jurors heard how Natland – while not quite ‘a hitman from a Hollywood movie’ – was precisely the type of vulnerable teenager preyed upon by Europe’s most menacing gang.

Foxtrot began by using the Telegram app and moved on to Signal and other popular social media apps including Instagram and Snapchat. 

The largest group, which has since been closed by Telegram, was the Samurai Kids and had 10,000 to 11,000 members but there are also smaller groups with a few hundred participants.

At the top of the group are the ‘instigators’, who order the crime and finance it, and below them are two tiers of ‘recruiters’, the lower level of which are often young men aged between 15 and 18.

Their job is to post adverts, deal with the replies and, when someone takes up the offer, hand them on to a senior gang member.

At the bottom are ‘enforcers’ who actually carry out the job and have included children as young as 13.

While the criminal syndicate originated in Sweden, it is now expanding across the border and wreaking havoc in Norway where teenagers – mostly from a migrant background – are hired as would-be assassins.

Because of a legal loophole in Scandinavia, children under the age of 15 cannot be held criminally responsible – making minors the ideal recruits for carrying out attacks on behalf of the Foxtrot crime ring.

It emerged in Sweden at the end of the 2010s and is led by Mr Majid, who has been sanctioned by the UK for his role in attacks across Europe on behalf of the Iranian regime.

Mr Majid, as head of the expanding criminal network, is understood to live under the protection of the Islamic Republic and has been involved in violent plots, particularly against Jewish and Israeli targets.

The group is believed to have been behind the attempted attack against the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm in January 2024, when an object believed to be an explosive device was found outside it.

On September 23, 2025, at 8.45pm, multiple grenades exploded outside a nail salon in Bislett, Oslo, shattering the windows and riddling its walls with shrapnel.

Police linked two 13-year-old boys to the attack and suspect that they were recruited via TikTok, supplied with the smuggled grenades, and paid 30,000 NOK (£2,000) to carry out the deed.

The Bislett explosion was only the beginning. Within weeks, two more Foxtrot-linked attacks followed.

On September 30, three boys aged 12, 13 and 14 were linked to a shooting incident in Sarpsborg. A week later, a 15-year-old was suspected of throwing a grenade at a sushi restaurant in Strømmen.

In a disturbing episode in February 2023, a teenager armed with an AK-47 fired 15 bullets into the home of a terrified mother and her young child in a Stockholm suburb.

In footage obtained by the Daily Mail at the time, bullets were sprayed into the front door with empty cartridge cases bouncing down the stairwell, before the camera focused on the front door riddled with holes.

A frightened mother, who lived in the block, told the Daily Mail: ‘It was crazy. It wasn’t a small gun. It was a Kalashnikov.

‘It is terrible that attacks like this are normalised.’

Local media reports indicated that police suspected the attack was linked to a desperate turf war between two gang leaders: ‘The Kurdish Fox’ and ‘The Greek’. 

In September that year, a loud explosion ripped through a quiet residential street of new-build family homes just north of the Swedish city of Uppsala.

Soha Saad, 24, was killed in the blast. She lived with her parents, and had recently qualified as a teacher. 

In footage of the aftermath, her mother can be heard screaming for her daughter, cursing the nation to which they once fled. 

Ms Saad was one of three victims of gangland violence in a violent 12-hour spell, and one of 12 people to be killed in a month.

In the same 12 hours, an 18-year-old rapper was shot dead at the Mälarhöjden sports ground in Fruängen in southern Stockholm in a brazen attack during a football training session, and hours later one man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting in Jordbro, south of the capital.

Gangs have been increasingly seeking out young girls and children with mental disabilities to carry out the killings, as they believe they are less likely to be suspected by their target.

Confronted by the increased involvement of young people in violent gang crime, prosecutors are increasingly seeking imprisonment rather than ‘closed care’ for child suspects, according to Swedish media.

Three teenagers were sentenced after a man was murdered while eating dinner at a restaurant south of Stockholm in March 2024, with the 17-year-old who is believed to have fired the fatal shot handed a jail term rather than youth detention.

The teenager, who is understood to have used an automatic weapon, was given eight years while a 19-year-old man was given life in prison and their 16-year-old accomplice put in closed care.

In July last year, a 34-year-old Swedish man was charged with threatening two employees at the police central detention centre in Grønland, Oslo.

He reportedly threatened to place a bomb at the home of one of the employees’ family members.

According to NRK, he claimed that he was part of the criminal Foxtrot network.

But Foxtrot is but one of around 70 Swedish gangs operating in Norway, where teenagers are being anonymously hired on encrypted messaging apps.

They can be paid anywhere between £20,000 and £60,000 for a hit, using hand grenades or improvised explosives smuggled into the country.

Many don’t even know who commissioned the crime, but are willing to carry it out for the right payment.

Despite being sanctioned, the Foxtrot criminal network seems only to be growing globally – with the incident in Huddersfield in March last year showing that British soil is not immune.

The son of two journalists, Natland started taking drugs aged 13.

He told the Old Bailey that by last year he was taking drugs ‘pretty much every day’.

He subsequently dropped out of school after ending up in a psychiatric unit with drug-induced psychosis, convinced his parents were about to kill him.

He said he then spent a short period in a ‘home for problem children’ where he encountered one of those who later recruited him to the Foxtrot Network, a teenager with the username UnknownHustler.

On March 15, the user forwarded him a message, which was in effect a Foxtrot online tender for business, known by police as VaaS.

The Foxtrot tender was stark: ‘Killing in England 270k. Have transport ready out of the country. Will smuggle assassin out of the country. The police will be paid to look the other way. Nothing can go wrong.’ (270,000 Norwegian Kroner is about £21,000.)

The teen was then added to a group with a 17-year-old teenager, who went by the name of ‘Generalen’, or General, and another called Agent 47. 

The group name was Assassin EU.

The first message he posted in the group was ‘Who is to be killed?’

It is still not clear that he ever got the answer to that question right up to the moment he was arrested, with police thwarting the attack.

Earlier this year, it was revealed Patsy Kensit would be returning to the soap 20 years after she left in 2006.

She would be returning to reprise her role as Sadie King but is now expected to be killed off in a dramatic scene.

It has been revealed the 58-year-old actress will fake her own death on Emmerdale, which will leave the door open for a potential future return.

When talking about her return, Patsy said: “The cast and crew are absolutely brilliant and I’m so grateful for the chance to return to the show.

“It’s absolutely amazing.

“Sadie King is a character that I really loved playing and I treasure the years I was here before.”

Emmerdale exits in recent months

Over the last few months, Emmerdale has been laying off a variety of long-running characters from the soap.

Jack Downham, who plays Charity Dingle’s son Noah, and Bradley Johnson, who has been starring as Mandy Dingle’s son Vinny for seven years, have both been axed from the show.

Nick Miles, who has played Jimmy King for 22 years, has also been removed from the show, as well as Olivia Bromley, who stars as Dawn Taylor.

There are more rumours that the show could be planning a big stunt that will end in even more character deaths.

The road tragedy took place on the R232 at Fincashel, Pettigo in Donegal at approximately 2.45pm on Sunday, August 2

A young man has died following a serious road collision in Co Donegal, Gardaí have confirmed.

The fatal incident occurred on the R232 at Fincashel, Pettigo in Donegal at around 2.45pm on Sunday, August 2, involving a car and a 4×4 vehicle, with Gardaí and emergency services swiftly attending the scene.

Tragically, the driver of the car – a male in his 20s – was pronounced dead at the scene. His remains have been taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Letterkenny, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

A female passenger, also aged in her 20s, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following the collision.

The driver of the second vehicle – a male in his 60s – was also taken to hospital for assessment. He was the sole occupant of the 4×4, reports the Irish Mirror.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly those who may have dash-cam footage from the area at the time of the crash.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told the Irish Mirror: “The road is closed for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local traffic diversions are in place. The Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the R232 near Pettigo at the time of the collision to come forward. Road users who may have camera footage (including dash cam or mobile phone recordings) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station Garda Station on 071 985 8530, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

More than 2,000 migrants have come to UK shores in small boat crossings since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister 13 days ago.

On Saturday alone, 326 migrants arrived in four boats, according to the latest figures, bringing the number to 2,057 since the former Manchester mayor took over from Sir Keir Starmer on July 20.

Last Wednesday marked the busiest day for small boat crossings across the English Channel so far this year, with 752 migrants arriving in the UK. 

This year’s provisional total of asylum seekers arriving by boat is now 14,526. 

Mr Burnham has said the Government’s plan to curb Channel crossings is working as numbers are down year on year, but he has admitted there is more to do. 

But in the same period in 2025 – from July 20 to August 2 – there were only 1,962 crossings made.

Though Mr Burnham backs his Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, saying on Friday her measures have ‘started to make a difference’.

The Prime Minister added: ‘Although this is the peak period of the year for crossings, overall the number of crossings is down, the number of removals of people is up.

‘So, there is progress, but we both recognise that we need to do more.’

While Andy Burnham’s arrival has seen worse rates of crossing than last year’s, the overall total for the year is down substantially when compared to the number at the same point in 2025.

This time last year, there had been 25,436 migrants who had arrived by small boats. This year’s figure of 14,526 is 43 per cent lower than 2025’s figure at the same date.

It is also 14 per cent lower than 2024’s 16,903 arrivals during the same period.

The Home Office notes that small boat crossings fluctuate because of changes in the weather, with peaks in the warmer summer months.

The new Prime Minister has pledged to be ‘relentless’ in tackling the small boat crossings while speaking during a visit to Dover’s today.

Speaking on the overall reduction of crossings, he said: ‘Clearly, progress is being made, but we’re not complacent, and it’s why I am here.

‘It’s why I’ve come down on Sunday to see the team to listen to what they think needs to be done, what further can be done.

‘So we’re just going to be relentless.

‘People want to see this issue addressed. I heard that on the doorsteps in Makerfield, but we also need to build a system that offers safe routes for people as well, because that also takes away the selling point of the gangs.

‘So on every level we’ve got to cover this … crucially increasing the enforcement activity.’

However, Burnham’s recent spike in migrant crossing numbers comes as Spain experienced the biggest illegal mass migration event in EU history when more than 60,000 people flooded into the Spanish territory of Ceuta.

Around 100 people are believed to have died in the chaos – including several children and two women – and some migrants report having to swim for more than 10 hours to reach the shore of the North African Spanish enclave.

Masses of youths were lured into coming after viral social media videos were shared of other youngsters cheering in the streets of Ceuta following their completion of the deadly journey.

Spanish authorities have today laid a floating barrier in the sea to prevent further breaches into their territory, but Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has caught serious flak domestically and from abroad for his handling of the situation.

Italy suspended its Schengen agreement with Spain, halting freedom of movement between the two countries, and 22 EU leaders have issued a letter denouncing Spanish immigration policy.

Meanwhile at home, locals jeered at Mr Sanchez when he visited and called him a ‘Son of a b****’.

Since the start of 2025, the number of National Crime Agency (NCA) officers tackling organised immigration crime in Britain has more than doubled from 376 to almost 800.

While Mr Burnham was visiting Dover’s joint command room – where officers from the NCA, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Border Security Command work to track movements across the Channel using surveillance drones – Ms Mahmood went to the NCA headquarters in Stratford.

She said: ‘There is more to be done, but this Government is restoring control at our border.’

Since Labour took power in 2024, more than 1,000 small boats or engines have been seized after they pledged to crack down on the supply of equipment to smuggling gangs who take migrants across the strait.

A Home Office spokesperson said: ‘This Government is bearing down on small boat crossings, with removals of small boat migrants at record levels and asylum claims down by 12 per cent.

‘The Home Secretary has signed a landmark new payment-by-results deal with France to boost enforcement action on beaches and put people smugglers behind bars.

‘This builds on joint work that has stopped over 46,000 attempted crossings since the election.

‘We have removed or deported almost 70,000 people who were here illegally, an increase of 41 per cent, and are going further to remove the incentives that draw illegal migrants to this country.’

Dogs of all breeds and sizes took to the ruff waters at the World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica, California on August 1.

Hundreds of people gathered to watch more than a dozen pooches hit the waves for the event’s tenth anniversary.

The event, which is no walk in the park, helped raise money for local charities by brands and organisations sponsoring contestants. 

Registration opened promptly at 9am and the competition got underway 20 minutes later, before finishing with an awards ceremony at 1.30pm.

There were eight events on the day including the small, medium and large and extra large categories.

Dog owners were also able to get a taste of the action in the human and dog tandem category.

Some dogs scored some near-pawfect runs having attended the events held in the San Francisco Bay area over many years.

Phil Collins‘s children were summoned to say their final goodbyes to the singer after he almost drank himself to death two years ago.

The 75-year-old singer admitted things could have gone ‘terribly wrong’ back in April 2024 when he was lying unconscious in a Swiss hospital, prompting his long-term manager to call his five kids to his bedside to make some tough decisions.

He is father to Joely, 53, daughter of his first wife Andrea Bertorelli who he adopted, Simon, 50, with Andrea, Lily Collins, 37, with his second wife Jill Tavelman), and Nic, 25, and Mathew, 21, with his third wife Orianne Cevey. 

Phil told The Sunday Times Magazine: ‘Because there were some decisions to be made about ‘Do we keep Phil on life support?’ kind of thing. My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye…

‘But I don’t remember them coming, I didn’t have no idea this was going on. They were all worried that they wouldn’t see me again. It could have gone terribly wrong.’

Shedding light on his battles with alcohol, he detailed how he would drink, saying: ‘I’d have wine I woke up. That was what I wanted for breakfast, a glass of wine…

‘But I didn’t drink into the night you know. So I wasn’t really aware of having a problem to be honest.’ 

Phil recovered, though he has a number of other health issues, including type 2 diabetes and nerve damage in his hands, and needs crutches to walk following multiple surgeries on his spine and knees. 

He rang in 2026 surrounded by his family at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in London.

Phil recalled of his daughter, Emily in Paris actress Lily Collins: ‘She was sitting beside me in tears, saying, ‘I never thought I’d get these moments.’ We had an incredible time. I can’t overemphasise how fantastic it was.’

Meanwhile, the In the Air Tonight hitmaker is keen to settle down again but thinks he has left it too late to find another partner.

He admitted: ‘I’d love to be in love again. I would love a relationship. Kissing somebody, for example. You know, pretty basic stuff. I think it’s probably too late for that. I’m not a very social person. I don’t, you know, I don’t go out.’

But despite his heartbreak, he suggested he’d be keen to make another go of things with Orianne – who is no longer with Thomas – though he knows it wouldn’t be the best idea.

Explaining they are still in touch as co-parents to sons Nic, 25, and Matthew, 20, Phil said when asked if he’d like there to be more to their relationship. 

He mused: ‘Well, I’d like it to be. But I don’t think it’s a good idea right now. Just because I know what I’m like. I would probably fall again.

‘Maybe. I mean, we were very much in love.’

Greggs is offering a new discounted ‘quicknic’ meal deal – but only if your area scores top marks on boffins’ weather formula The bakery giants have created an AI-assisted formula combining two years of weather and behaviour analysis to identify the best days for workers to ditch their desks for a ‘Quicknic’ outside.

The formula weighs up lunchtime temperature, cloud cover, rain, pollen and Britain’s appetite for eating outdoors. The Greggs Forecasting Office will calculate the scores for 12 regions every week and when a region scores 24, a new £4.75 ‘Quicknic’ deal is unlocked.

Greggs says this means the Quicknic could be available in Manchester while London waits for the numbers to add up. The formula has been dubbed the ‘Quicknic Code’ and it will allow customers to grab a cold baguette and a sausage roll from just £4.75 – a 40p saving on their lunch.

Greggs says temperature has the greatest influence, while cloud, rain and pollen lower the score. Regional baselines reflecting the different temperatures at which people across Britain change their lunchtime habits and a separate Lunch Outside Index measures the nation’s appetite for eating outdoors.

Zoe Harris, customer and marketing director at Greggs, said: “Nobody has ever put mathematicians, scientists and sausage roll makers together to create a lunch deal before, but that’s what we’ve done. Determining who gets the Quicknic deal isn’t based on just one weather forecast.

“Our formula crunches six important factors, from temperature and cloud cover to pollen levels and chance of rain, before deciding whether our new deal becomes live in each region. It may be the most scientifically advanced sausage roll and baguette deal ever created.”

Greggs says its new Quicknic deal means instead of workers being stuck at their desk, they can pick up lunch, find a bench, wall or patch of grass and enjoy the British sunshine while it lasts. It comes as new research conducted by Greggs reveals that the average Brit has four lunches a week sat at their desk.

The study also claims that two thirds (66%) state that they regularly regret sitting in their office for lunch when it’s sunny outside. In fact, 57% of Brits say they would support a mandatory ‘Sunshine Law’ ensuring people spend their lunch break outside in hot and sunny weather.

Almost three quarters (73%) said that a discounted meal deal available only on locally declared good-weather days would make them leave their desk for lunch. There were four miles of queueing traffic on approach to the crash

Motorists travelling on the A14 this afternoon (August 1) are facing delays following a two car crash. According to National Highways, one lane is closed westbound between junction 34 (Fen Ditton) and junction 33 (Milton Interchange).

Emergency services and recovery are on the scene, but there are delays of around an hour and four miles of congestion on approach. All traffic was previously held just before 1pm, before Lane 2 was released around half an hour later.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “Traffic has been released, lane 2 is now running past the scene. Lane 1 remains closed while recovery commences at scene. The incident involved two cars.”

What are the three new Morrisons chocolate bars?

You can choose from Jaffa Orange Milk Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Jelly Milk Chocolate, or Custard Cream Milk Chocolate.

The custard cream-inspired chocolate is filled with a vanilla cream and biscuit crunch layer.

If you are a big fan of chocolate orange flavours, the Jaffa Orange bar has a zesty orange jelly layer through the middle.

Those who love a peanut butter and jam sandwich might want to try the creamy, nutty, and fruity jelly-layered chocolate bar.

The Peanut Butter and Jelly Milk Chocolate might not be around for too long, as it does have a limited-edition sticker on it so you might want to pick it up soon.

All three of the chocolate bars cost £2 for a 165g bar and are branded as luxury chocolate.

The chocolate bars can either be ordered from the Morrisons website or bought in-store.

Sweet Reviews UK tested out the Jaffa Orange Milk Chocolate in a video posted to TikTok and said: “I think it’s a thing of beauty.

“I absolutely love the geometric shapes and the chocolate is nice and shiny.

“The packaging says it’s filled with a jaffa orange jelly.

“This is not a jelly in my opinion, it’s more like a runny jam.

“And to be honest, I am all for it.

“It’s super messy, super sticky, and it oozes out.

“But it’s tangy and sweet and works perfectly with milk chocolate.

“100% my new favourite chocolate bar.”

Many people took to the comments to share their excitement over the new chocolate bars, with one saying: “I really enjoyed it, really tasty and would get it again – though I may put it in the fridge next time.

“I did buy the custard cream to try, they didn’t have the peanut butter in.”

Another person said: “Imma need this in dark chocolate ASAP.”

A third person wrote: “Need to try this, will be putting it in the fridge though!”

Richard E. Grant’s Very Modern Odyssey (Channel 4)

Rating: Five stars out of five

How grand to think that, wherever you go in the world, there’ll be an Englishman in elegant attire, clasping a book and bestowing his approving gaze upon the sights.

In Europe, that will be Michael Portillo, with his Bradshaw’s railway guide, fedora and wardrobe in all the colours of a sweet shop.

Further afield, we’ll meet the urbanely charming Michael Palin with his kit bag slung over one shoulder.

Following their lead, as he voyages around the Med on his Very Modern Odyssey, actor Richard E. Grant struck a pose on every street corner, to admire the architecture or declaim from Homer.

Everything he saw pleased him, especially the cathedral of the Knights of St John in the Maltese capital, Valletta. ‘This is baroque on steroids,’ he chirruped. ‘It out–Sistines the Sistine chapel.’

The Caravaggio in one of the side chapels thrilled him. I can never see the appeal of this 17th–century artist — too sordid, a horror movie director born before his time — but his depiction of St John the Baptist’s execution moved Richard almost to tears.

The actor, a life–long teetotaller (despite that rambunctious performance as a permanently sozzled thesp in Withnail And I), is a delightful travelling companion. He’s arch, he’s fascinated by history, he’s unafraid to fool around and he’s plainly out for a good time.

Grant travels through Turkey, Malta, Sicily, Italy, Tunisia, Corfu, and Ithaca, tracking the 10–year voyage home from the Trojan War

He has an amusing turn of phrase, too. Malta looks as though ‘the whole island has been dipped in honey’. Cheekily, he refers to the locals as Maltesers, so perhaps they’ve been dipped in chocolate.

Tucking into a dish of braised pigeon in butter, he went into ecstasies before asking the chef — a burly chap called Clint — to marry him.

Richard is a man who believes in dining well and travelling light. Wherever he went, from the ruins of ancient Troy to Queen Elizabeth’s favourite Med hotel, the Phoenicia, he wore the same brown calfskin leather jacket.

This seems to have been from necessity, not choice. He told travel podcaster Tanya Rose recently that, since having his suitcases stolen in New York a couple of years ago, he has vowed never to fly with more than hand luggage.

Crude gags of the weekend: 

Sweet, witty, touching and clever, the original Ghosts, with Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith–Bynoe, was the perfect family sitcom. 

Ghosts Australia (BBC3) is the same concept, but with obsessive toilet and sex jokes. They’ve ruined it.

Given how stingy airlines are these days with overhead locker space, he probably wasn’t carrying much more than a change of undies and a toothbrush.

He also told the podcast that staying in hotels is, ‘one of the sexiest things you can do, because you feel anonymous. There’s room service and your bed is changed every day. You’re divested of all responsibility.’

Certainly he appeared to be blissfully at ease wherever he went, though the show must have been shot on a tight schedule. The day after filming finished, he headed to Claudia Winkleman’s Scottish castle to begin filming Celebrity Traitors.

If she has picked him to be one of her murderers, hiding that cloak in his hand luggage won’t have been easy.
