Dell PowerEdge VRTX Video Overview



The Dell PowerEdge VRTX features a tower form factor and delivers primary storage via as many as 25 SFF or 12 LFF drives and implements four server nodes with two SFF drives each. The server nodes are Dell PowerEdge M620 or M520s, and with either option, the VRTX can deliver up to 64 physical processing cores (128 logical cores).

    Interesting video but it really misses the point in your noisy enviroment. The VRTX is super quiet. I saw it demoed and with two M520 blades in could not be heard from normal background noise.

    When my office needed to get rid of a dozen old servers, I contacted a few companies in the New York area that sell servers. Network Doctor based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey provided a solution that saved my practice over $20,000 just on the hardware. The space that this little box takes up is a fraction of what the older equipment used and in Manhattan that saves thousands of dollars in rent. Network Doctor setup everything and continues to provide support. We just give them a call when we need changes made and they handle it. Everything is covered for a low monthly price. I highly recommend them for computer services.

    Definitely nice, but the only way this is going to save you money is if your data requirements can utilize all 26 bays. Otherwise you can simply buy 4 or 5 servers for the cost of this one.

    I like the idea, but unfortunately the management of this systems is so different to a regular system that I couldn't recommend it. I look after Dell servers and Cisco network equipment, this is a whole different ball game. You have to learn a new way of working, with Java and web-based consoles. If you have a whole bunch of these to manage it must get easier, but just one in a network of transnational storage, servers and networking is just too difficult to get your head around. If you only touch the device once per year you will soon forget how to change a port from one config to another.

    9 years later, i've come to mention that add in storage cards such as the iodrive pictured at 2:25 or so is not able to be used as shared storage, you can only assign it to one blade at a time, technically you could share the storage via iSCSI or whatever, but it's not shared or redundant in the same way that the front drives are
