Thai Government Moves to Overhaul Firearms Laws and Licensing
The Thai government is overhauling firearms laws, enhancing licensing controls, and utilizing technology for better record-keeping and background checks, while gun dealers will screen buyers more rigorously.
Key Points
- The Thai government is set to overhaul firearms laws, focusing on modernizing licensing controls related to the import, sale, possession, and use of firearms, and their associated ammunition. An estimated 10 million firearms are currently in civilian possession, and no increase in this number is planned.
- Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt announced that technology will be implemented to streamline firearms records and enhance authority checks, transitioning from a reliance on paper records to a more comprehensive digital system. Gun dealers will be tasked with conducting behavioral and mental health checks on potential buyers.
- The Interior Ministry suggests allowing individuals with illegal or unregistered firearms to surrender them to authorities. Additionally, the use of firearms as collateral in pawnshops remains illegal, and measures are being established to improve overall licensing, verification, and monitoring processes.
The government is preparing to overhaul firearms laws and modernize licensing controls, covering the import, sale, possession, and use of firearms, as well as ammunition and the premises where firearms are used.
Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt said technology will be used to link firearms records and enable authorities to conduct more thorough checks, replacing a system that still relies heavily on paper records and fragmented information. An estimated 10 million firearms are currently held by people in Thailand, and the government does not plan to approve any increase in that number.
Gun dealers would take greater responsibility for screening prospective buyers, including checks on behavioral history and mental health, while government agencies would apply tighter licensing scrutiny. The Interior Ministry has also proposed allowing people with illegal or unregistered firearms to surrender them to authorities.
Pakorn also addressed the use of firearms as pawnshop collateral, which is already illegal because gun licenses are issued to specific individuals and cannot be transferred through such arrangements. Unlawfully held firearms may be surrendered without waiting for new legislation as authorities work to improve licensing, verification, and monitoring nationwide.

(VIDEO) Tavita Pritchard Opens His Stanford Head Coaching Tenure Against Hawaii in Season Opener

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Tavita Pritchard begins his tenure as Stanford’s head coach Saturday when the Cardinal host Hawaii in a season opener carrying extra weight for a program looking to end a stretch of five straight losing seasons.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Eastern time at Stanford Stadium, with the game airing on the ACC Network. Pritchard, 39, takes over his alma mater after 13 seasons on the Stanford coaching staff, hired last November by Andrew Luck, the program’s former star quarterback who now serves as general manager. Pritchard replaces Frank Reich, who led Stanford to a 4-8 record last season as interim head coach.
Pritchard’s own history with Stanford includes one of the most celebrated moments in the program’s football history. As a redshirt sophomore quarterback making his first career start on Oct. 6, 2007, Pritchard led Stanford to a stunning 24-23 upset of No. 2-ranked Southern California, at the time a 41-point underdog, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mark Bradford with 49 seconds remaining. He later lost his starting job to Andrew Luck before his playing career ended in 2009, after which he immediately transitioned into coaching roles on the Stanford staff.
Hawaii enters Saturday’s rematch on an upward trajectory under fifth-year head coach Timmy Chang, who guided the Rainbow Warriors to a 9-4 record last season, their best mark since going 10-5 in 2019. That breakthrough followed three seasons in which Hawaii won just 13 games combined under Chang, a former Rainbow Warriors quarterback and program legend. Chang signed a contract extension through the 2030 season earlier this week, though he said his attention was fully on Saturday’s matchup. “I think you prepare for everything, and then you adjust as it goes,” Chang said. “But really, football is football. We got to tackle, we got to throw the ball and catch balls.”
Chang and Pritchard are two of four Polynesian head coaches currently in the Football Bowl Subdivision, and Chang offered praise for his counterpart ahead of the game, calling Pritchard a “great coach, great player” and “great leader” as both programs look to build toward bigger goals this season, according to comments reported by Hawaii Sports Radio Network.
This marks the first time Hawaii and Stanford have played each other in consecutive seasons, and the first time the two programs have met at Stanford Stadium, with all five of their previous meetings having taken place in Honolulu. Hawaii earned its only win in the series last season, a 23-20 victory in the 2025 opener in which the Rainbow Warriors erased an early 10-point deficit before Kanzei Matsuzawa connected on a game-winning field goal, one of three he made that day.
Hawaii quarterback Micah Alejado, a sophomore, enters this season with rising expectations after earning All-Mountain West honors as a freshman, throwing for 3,106 yards and 24 touchdowns against nine interceptions while finishing eighth nationally in passing yards per game at 282.4. Alejado said he’s looking for a cleaner start against Stanford after last year’s slow beginning. “Last year, we came out really bad,” Alejado said. “I gave up a sack for a touchdown. We gave them 10 points.”
Stanford, meanwhile, turns to Davis Warren at quarterback after his transfer from Michigan, where he missed the entire 2025 season recovering from a torn ACL. Warren will be working behind a Cardinal team looking to reset its identity under new offensive coordinator Terry Heffernan and defensive coordinator Kris Richard, both also entering their first seasons in Palo Alto alongside Pritchard.
Vegas has installed Hawaii as a 5.5-point underdog for Saturday’s game, a line that reflects both Stanford’s home-field advantage and the uncertainty surrounding a new coaching staff, even as the Rainbow Warriors arrive with more established continuity after their breakout 2025 campaign. Hawaii went just 2-3 on the road last season en route to its nine-win finish, a split that adds some question marks to how the team will perform away from Honolulu, even against a rebuilding Stanford squad.
Radio analysts covering the Hawaii program have cautioned against assuming Saturday’s game will be an easy measuring-stick win for the Rainbow Warriors despite Stanford’s recent struggles, noting that the Cardinal remain a Power Four program playing at home with returning talent and its own ambitions of turning the corner under Pritchard. For Hawaii, the matchup offers an early opportunity to show whether last season’s improvement under Chang was the start of a sustained climb or a high-water mark that will be difficult to replicate against tougher competition.

Morning Briefing: Thailand and Asia Business News
Bank of Thailand tightens gold-trading oversight as baht correlation weakens
Bank of Thailand Governor Vitai Ratanakorn said Thursday that restrictions imposed in March on retail gold trading have measurably reduced gold’s influence on the baht and could be tightened further if needed. The online gold-trading limit currently stands at 50 million baht per person per day, with officials weighing a cut to 30 million baht or less; the 60-day correlation between gold prices and the baht has fallen from as high as 0.85 a year ago to roughly 0.30 in April, and physical gold withdrawals above 2 kilograms have dropped about 70% since new reporting requirements took effect. The baht traded near 32.93 to the dollar Friday morning, down 0.23% on the day, while the SET index opened Saturday at 1,588.22, down 12.48 points.
This is becoming a structural exchange-rate policy tool rather than a narrow gold-market regulation, and it matters directly for Thai exporters and tourism operators who have struggled against a currency that has been among the strongest performers in Asia over the past year. A further tightening would signal the BOT is prepared to keep leaning on the gold channel to manage competitiveness pressures even as it holds its policy rate steady.
Thai July trade deficit narrows to $3.61 billion as exports beat forecasts
Thailand’s customs-cleared exports rose 21.6% year-on-year in July, ahead of a Reuters poll forecast of 17.75% and accelerating from June’s 20.8% gain, the Commerce Ministry reported Thursday. Imports climbed 36.7% to $38.40 billion, producing a $3.61 billion monthly trade deficit, smaller than the $5.38 billion shortfall markets had expected but still Thailand’s tenth consecutive monthly gap; the seven-month total deficit now stands at a record $34.35 billion. The ministry raised its full-year export growth forecast to more than 11%, up from 8%, citing continued demand for technology and AI-related products.
Persistent import growth outpacing exports gives Washington additional grounds to scrutinise Thailand over transshipment concerns tied to Chinese-origin goods, a live issue as Bangkok simultaneously negotiates relief from the 12.5% Section 301 tariff. The resilience of electronics and AI-linked shipments, however, reinforces Thailand’s positioning in regional supply chains even as the trade balance remains under pressure.
Fed Chair Warsh strikes a measured tone at Jackson Hole, leaving rate path unresolved
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered his first Jackson Hole address as chair on Friday, saying the US economy “appears to have strengthened” while stopping short of signalling near-term policy moves. Warsh told the symposium he remains “committed to a discipline, not to a decision,” acknowledging a slowdown in hiring he attributed to flattening labour supply while noting that recent inflation readings, though better than expected, do not yet show underlying trends have meaningfully improved. US equities edged lower on the remarks, and Asia-Pacific markets, which had opened mixed Friday awaiting the speech, closed without a clear directional catalyst.
The absence of a firm signal on rate direction leaves the dollar and regional currencies, including the baht, exposed to continued two-way volatility. For Thailand and other export-driven ASEAN economies, the ambiguity keeps financing costs and capital-flow expectations unsettled heading into the September FOMC meeting.
Asia-Pacific markets close mixed as chip weakness offsets Japanese gains
Regional benchmarks diverged Friday: Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.41% to close at 66,405.56, with the Topix up 0.72% to 4,146.71, while South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.79% to 6,788.88 on renewed selling in memory-chip heavyweights Samsung and SK Hynix, and the small-cap Kosdaq ended flat. Mainland China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.46% to 4,609.18, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was little changed, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.6% to 9,092.3. The yen held close to 160 per dollar, a level that supports Japanese exporters but keeps intervention risk and Bank of Japan policy in focus.
The divergence underscores how sensitive Asian equity performance remains to the semiconductor cycle and to Fed signalling, both of which flow through to Thailand’s own electronics-export story and to regional capital allocation more broadly. A sustained pullback in Korean chip names would be a leading indicator worth tracking for Thai component exporters further down the supply chain.
South Korea’s resilient chip exports point to a still-intact Asian tech cycle
South Korea’s August export outlook remains constructive despite Friday’s share-price weakness in its largest semiconductor names, with sustained chip shipments continuing to support the broader Asian manufacturing cycle even as China’s domestic economy shows signs of strain. Reuters reporting cited in Thailand Business News’s own markets desk coverage frames Korea as a leading indicator for whether the AI investment boom continues to underpin Asian manufacturing activity.
Korea is a useful proxy for Thailand’s own electronics and component-export trajectory: continued strength in semiconductor exports would support the technology and AI-linked demand the Thai Commerce Ministry has cited in raising its 2026 export forecast, while a genuine downturn in Korean shipments would be an early warning sign for the wider region, Thailand included.
