How ‘quiet’ Lady Louise is using the late Queen and Prince Philip as a blueprint for her blossoming relationship with university boyfriend Felix da Silva-Clamp: ROBERT JOBSON

Published

on

Despite being a frequent face at royal events, Lady Louise Windsor has kept largely out of the spotlight: her relationship with boyfriend Felix da Silva-Clamp

From sporting suits and smart skirts for a night out at the theatre to cheering each other on for a day of carriage racing the Royal Windsor Horse Show; 22-year-old Lady Louise and her boyfriend Felix da Silva-Clamp may look young and fresh-faced, but channel an ‘old-fashioned’ romance typically seen in pairs decades older than them.

The couple, who met at university, are more likely to be spotted at the garden centre than a rowdy night out at a club.

So it’s perhaps no wonder that they remind royal fans of another sensible, down-to-earth courtship – that of late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip

According to author Robert Jobson, Louise first met Felix at St Andrews, where they became friends after being cast in a student play at the Byre Theatre.

The pair were first linked in 2024 and have been together since June 2025, but have kept things remarkably low-key – so much so that royal reporters simply called Felix Louise’s ‘pal’ for a time.

Now they are appearing together at family events and royal engagements, but their quiet romance is a world away from the drama surrounding other royals.

They reportedly grew closer during rehearsals, with their friendship eventually blossoming into romance.

Yet, even after dating for over a year, the couple have managed to keep things private.

That changed this summer when Felix joined Louise and her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, at a performance of the Zulu ballet Inala at the Edinburgh International Festival, where they were pictured chatting to cast members.

He has also supported Louise at carriage-driving competitions, including Ashfields in Essex, where, according to Mr Jobson, ‘onlookers watched him punch the air as she came through the water’.

The author added: ‘Nothing royal about him, just a young man in love standing in a wet field in Essex, cheering his girlfriend on.’

According to Mr Jobson, Felix’s background is well-suited for Louise, given that her mother, Sophie, originates from a middle-class background.

Born in Kensington in 2004, he is the son of London solicitor Jonathan da Silva-Clamp, a former Conservative parliamentary candidate, and Australian doctor Kendall Searle.

The family later moved to Australia, where Felix attended Melbourne Grammar School before heading to St Andrews.

He and Louise also joined the same reserve army unit and share interests including theatre and traditional Scottish dancing.

Their low-key relationship is a far cry from Prince Harry’s ‘Party Prince’ days, when his nights out stumbling out of nightclubs and relationships with former girlfriends Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas regularly made headlines.

The same could be said for other relatives like Princess Eugenie, who earned a reputation in her early twenties as a regular on the London club scene, frequently photographed leaving popular West End and Mayfair hotspots.

According to royal author Robert Jobson, there has long been a striking resemblance between Lady Louise and her grandmother Queen Elizabeth II – both physically and in temperament

Instead, it appears Louise and Felix appear happy to keep their heads down and get on with life. And in many ways, that is very much keeping in line with Louise herself.

According to Mr Jobson, there has long been a striking resemblance between Lady Louise and her grandmother – both physically and in temperament.

He wrote: ‘Some say it is her grandmother all over again. Elizabeth made up her mind as a teenager about a Greek prince with royal blood, Philip – even though he has no money and unhelpful German relations, and never moved an inch while the courtiers sniffed.

‘Constancy and steadfastness was at the heart of her character, in marriage as in everything else, and it was perhaps underestimated.

‘Like Lady Louise, Princess Elizabeth was a quiet girl who knew exactly what she wanted when it came to love.

‘People say Lady Louise looks like her grandmother. There is a resemblance. But the likeness that matters more is not in the face.’

Before her passing aged 96 in 2022, Louise was known as the granddaughter who spent huge amounts of time with the Queen, regularly staying at Windsor Castle during her childhood.

While some of her older cousins came and went, Louise was often there at weekends, giving her years to watch how her grandmother lived.

What the young royal appears to have picked up was the Queen’s unfussy approach to life.

Mr Jobson added: ‘[The Queen] regarded clothes as a uniform; a way of being visible in a crowd. Taking good care of them so they would last. Always immaculately turned out, she gave them very little further thought.

‘Lady Louise is the same. Always smart, but unfussy. She wore her coronation dress again to Trooping the Colour.

‘At Christmas she was in her mother’s beige Prada coat, first worn at Royal Ascot a decade earlier, with a Jane Taylor hat Sophie had worn to a Rifles homecoming in 2017.’

But that level of modesty extends beyond her outfit choices – her mother Sophie has spoken openly about bringing her children up with the expectation that they would have to work for a living, and Louise certainly has.

At 18, she spent the summer working at a Surrey garden centre for around £6.60 an hour, serving customers and working behind the till.

One shopper described her as ‘really modest and sweet’, saying you would ‘never imagine the Queen’s granddaughter’ working there.

She later worked in the university canteen while studying English literature at St Andrews.

This very trait links her once more to her grandmother, who, aged 19, trained as a mechanic and driver with the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War, after pushing her father, King George VI, to let her play a role in the war effort.

Louise’s love of horses and carriage driving, meanwhile, comes from Prince Philip, taking the sport up seriously after his death, driving his carriage at Windsor Castle and competing herself.

Mr Jobson wrote: ‘She has her grandmother’s temperament and her grandfather’s hobby.

‘Level headed, thoughtful and kind. Those who knew the late Queen at that age would recognise a good deal of her in this young woman.’

And now, her relationship with Felix seems to fit the same mould.

While Prince William and Catherine’s romance at St Andrews became a media obsession, Louise and Felix have enjoyed something much closer to an ordinary student relationship.

A royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told The Telegraph: ‘They look like a very normal, well-suited couple who have been able to lead normal university lives and develop common interests.’

He has also said Louise and her younger brother James, the Earl of Wessex, are ‘clearly of conservative tendencies’.

For now, Louise is taking a gap year after graduating from St Andrews and is considering a career in the Armed Forces, while continuing with carriage driving, with Felix seemingly content with cheering her on from the sidelines.

According to Jobson, the late Queen was often at her most relaxed away from the cameras – at the racecourse, in the stables or simply getting on with the job.

Lady Louise appears very much the same, grounded and happiest when nobody is really watching.

Irishwoman and husband found dead in jacuzzi at Spanish holiday villa ‘both died from cardiac arrest’

Published

on

Belfast Live

Monaghan born Thomasina Tobin and her husband Patrick died near Valencia on Tuesday

The Irishwoman and her husband found dead in the jacuzzi of their Spanish holiday villa died from cardiac arrest, it has emerged.

Reports say postmortems show Thomasina and Patrick Tobin suffered fatal heart stoppages when they became trapped in the jacuzzi at the villa near Valencia.

One theory is that both cardiac arrests were brought on by physical exhaustion in the struggle to save themselves – while another is that one of them was electrocuted and the other died when they fought to rescue them.

“Preliminary analyses indicate that the victims suffered cardiac arrest brought on by acute stress following physical exhaustion and the desperation of the moment,” the respected Valencia newspaper Las Provincias newspaper said on Sunday morning.

The couple, who were married with two teenage children and were living in London, died in the freak accident at their holiday villa at Cullera, near Valencia, last Tuesday.

Mrs Tobin, née McArdle, was a quantity surveyor who was originally from Castleblayney in Co Monaghan. She was 51. Her husband Patrick, 48, was from New Zealand.

They are believed to have spent up to two weeks at the villa in the upmarket residential estate called Cap Blanc in Cullera when the tragedy happened.

They were both found dead in the jacuzzi by their two teenage children, who then raised the alarm.

Homicide cops initially investigated their deaths as there were marks and scratches on both bodies – but foul play was quickly ruled out.

Instead, police are now investigating the theory that they died in a freak accident while they enjoyed the outdoor jacuzzi in their holiday rental.

It has now emerged that on Saturday, police examined the jacuzzi for the third time – but on this occasion they had an industrial expert on hot tubs with them.

The expert joined the Guardia Civil team at the request of an investigating magistrate – as judges lead such probes in Spain.

The expert was tasked with analysing the power of the suction fittings in the jacuzzi – to see if they trapped one or both of the victims in the hot tub.

Las Provincias said investigators are probing the theory that the tub’s hydro-massage system cause a strong suction effect that suddenly trapped Mr and Mrs Tobin in the water.

It says investigators believe the couple then fought desperately to save themselves.

The paper says: “According to the first investigations, the excessive suction force would have imprisoned the couple inside the bathtub, which triggered a situation of extreme anguish and desperate physical effort to free themselves from the hydraulic grip.

“The autopsy findings almost definitively reinforce the theory of accidental entrapment. “Preliminary analyses indicate that the victims suffered cardiac arrest brought on by acute stress following physical exhaustion and the desperation of the moment.”

It also said the post mortems showed the scratches on their bodies were not as a result of third party violence – but stemmed from them trying to save each other.

The paper also said that another possibility is that one victim may have suffered the cardiac arrest due to electrocution from a suspected fault in the tub and the other died trying to save them.

Mrs Tobin was a member of the highly respected McArdle family from Castleblayney, but had been living and working in London for around 20 years.

Her father is Tommy McArdle, who is a well-known playwright, actor and producer – and who spent many years directing RTÉ’s drama Glenroe.

He is famous for working with his brother John, who is also a writer and actor.

Both brothers also played football for Monaghan.

Mrs Tobin was a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and worked as a Chartered Surveyor.

Major projects she worked on in the UK included the Ritz and Shard building, both in London.

The Department of Foreign Affairs previously confirmed to the Irish Mirror it was aware of the incident and confirmed it was providing consular assistance in the case of one Irish citizen.

Initial reports said both Mr and Mrs Tobin were Irish, but it was later established that he was from New Zealand.

A spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror : “The Department is aware of this case and is providing consular assistance in the case of the Irish citizen concerned.

“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”

The couple’s two young children reportedly alerted the homeowner after finding their bodies at their rented villa near Valencia at around 5pm local time on Tuesday.

Relatives from Monaghan flew out to be with the couple’s devastated children on Wednesday morning.

How the US is teaming with Polish forces on drone lessons from Ukraine

Published

on

Jury says The New York Times defamed Alabama player

HOHENFELS, Germany (AP) — On a moonless and rainy night, a group of soldiers emerged from a ramshackle building meant to resemble a church. The alpine terrain loomed over them as they quietly set off for the tree line of the German countryside a short distance away.

The soldiers are members of the Polish special forces and are taking part in an exercise designed only months ago that simulates moving through enemy lines, traversing miles of enemy territory and launching a drone strike on a key enemy location.

Initially designed by the Army’s Green Berets for U.S. special forces, the exercise that began Friday is informed by and simulates many of the challenges that Ukrainian troops have experienced in their conflict with Russia. It is the first time a NATO ally like Poland has undertaken the training, and it comes at a time when tensions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and NATO countries have escalated.

“We’re using lessons learned from Ukraine,” an Army Green Beret officer assigned to the training complex said Thursday. “All of those effects that we’re seeing either Russia or Ukraine having to overcome — we’re doing our best to replicate.”

The Associated Press received rare access to both the training ground and the troops conducting the exercise, which has only been conducted twice before, both times this year, by two different Green Beret teams.

The drill highlights the focus that some parts of the U.S. military have on learning the latest techniques in drone warfare, pioneered by Ukraine during its 4 1/2-year effort to repel Russian forces. It also shows how the U.S., its NATO allies and Ukraine are working together to counter the threat of possible further Russian action in coming years even as the Trump administration has warned of troop drawdowns in Europe.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe went to Moscow this week to warn Russia not to attack NATO countries, The Wall Street Journal reported. Russia has the appetite to conduct sabotage and cyberattacks against NATO countries, but Putin wants to avoid a direct confrontation, according to three Western officials, who spoke Friday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military matters.

How special forces are learning to sneak behind enemy lines to deploy drones

During the exercise in Germany, a senior enlisted soldier familiar with the training scenario at Joint Multinational Readiness Center Hohenfels — about an hour’s drive southeast from Nuremberg — said the plan is to run it several times a year. The officer said he expects most, if not all, of the 32 NATO nations to express interest in sending their troops to try the exercise.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity in line with the U.S. military’s longstanding policy of not publicly identifying individual members of special forces units.

The scenario, which runs for several days, takes place on a large, 1,100-square-mile (3,000-square-kilometer) plot of land nestled in the Bavarian countryside.

Poland’s special forces will be expected to sneak past a U.S. Army airborne infantry unit, whose soldiers will play the enemy. The U.S. airborne infantry unit will parachute into the closed-off training area at the Army’s Hohenfels base and set themselves up into a front line.

Assuming the Polish forces can make their way past the U.S. Army, they must then move north — through about 60 miles (100 kilometers) of German countryside — to another training area in the town of Grafenwoehr, where they are expected to destroy a simulated target.

In between lie German farms and villages, private and government cameras, as well as the city of Amberg with a population of more than 40,000 people, all of which not only pose as obstacles but also create the potential for them to be spotted.

“We have them take off their military attire, go in as civilians so they can blend in — but blend in also means don’t get seen by civilians,” the senior enlisted soldier said.

German civilians in the area largely are not aware of the exercise and serve as a reasonable test of how well special forces can blend into the local population. If they fail, reports of suspicious people to police will make it back to the military, which will use them to pinpoint the team.

“This is supposed to be Russia and you’re going to stand out in Russia,” the enlisted soldier added.

Plus, the U.S. Army also will be looking for the Polish forces with drones of their own.

If they’re spotted, “now you have the entire Russian arsenal coming at you,” the enlisted soldier said.

The U.S. Army can either send a military police unit to hunt for the Polish special forces with dogs or direct more drones to the area. In previous versions of the exercise, the U.S. Army had access to more than a hundred drones, the enlisted soldier said.

Troops are able to be “captured or killed” as part of the training.

Countries seek help from Ukraine on drone warfare

While the exercise taps into drones and NATO teamwork, the message of collaboration and the value of drones has been somewhat mixed lately across the military.

President Donald Trump stirred confusion among NATO allies by going back and forth on drawing down U.S. troop levels in Europe, and the administration has launched a force review on next steps. And last week, the Army’s top officer shuttered a unit that specialized in drone warfare.

But overall, there is growing interest in tapping Ukraine for its expertise on modern warfare and, specifically, drones.

In March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country was helping five countries in the Middle East and Gulf region counter Iranian drone attacks launched during the war with the United States, while the U.S. and European countries were among those requesting support.

Meanwhile, the number of mysterious drone incursions in Europe have grown, including as recently as this month, when a pair of drones were spotted over a German military base and a drone carrying explosives was found at a key cargo airport in Germany.

Police release one of two men arrested over ‘murder’ of girl, seven, and her aunt, 34, in Middlesbrough house fire

Published

on

Valentina Foster, seven, and her aunt Natalie McDonald, 34, died in the fire on Wednesday

A man arrested on suspicion of the murder of a seven-year-old girl and her aunt who died in a house fire has been released without charge.

Cleveland Police said the 31-year-old would face no further action but stressed that detectives were continuing to question a second man in connection with the alleged attack, which led to the deaths of Natalie McDonald, 34, and her niece, Valentina Foster.

On Saturday he was named as Jaden Wright, 23, during an appearance in court in relation to separate offences of grievous bodily harm and intentional strangulation.

Magistrates in Teesside were told Wright, of Middlesbrough, was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the house fire, in the Grangetown area, on Wednesday.

He was subsequently charged with the GBH and strangulation offences which relate to another alleged incident in Grange Farm Road the day before, on August 25, the court heard.

Prosecutors said the unnamed complainant in the separate case was living in a tent when she was allegedly attacked by the defendant.

She was taken to hospital where it was found she had injuries including a fractured eye socket.

Magistrates agreed to an application for Wright, of King George’s Terrace, to be remanded into police custody.

Dressed in a grey T-shirt, Wright sat in the glass-fronted dock for the 30-minute hearing next to a single security officer.

He did not enter a plea and spoke only to confirm his name and personal details.

Wright is due to appear again at the same court on Wednesday, September 2.

Four other people were injured in the house blaze, including a 48-year-old woman who remains in a ‘critical but stable’ condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and a 27-year-old man, who is undergoing treatment at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Two teenage girls were also treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and were subsequently discharged.

On Friday, police said the property remained unstable and work will be carried out on the building over the coming days to make the site safe, which will also allow emergency services access inside.

They also confirmed the fire was not being linked to a fatal collision on the A66, which killed seven people, including two serving police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough.

Officers initially said they could not rule out a link with wider gang violence that broke out in Teesside after the smash, which also killed five young men in a VW Passat who had been driving the wrong way up the carriageway.

He was skinned for the visitors’ goal, however, showing that he still has plenty to learn if he is to master this new role.

Dolly Parton’s family announce she has been ‘laid to rest’ after private funeral

Dolly Parton has been laid to rest after a private funeral, her family has confirmed.

Her death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, in an Instagram video posted August 25. The musician’s publicist confirmed Parton’s cancer diagnosis to the Associated Press later in the day, but did not give further details on her illness.

Dolly’s niece, Lainey Parton, shared a touching tribute to her aunt August 29, confirming the Queen of Country had been laid to rest the day prior.

“I wanted to wait until after my granny was laid to rest yesterday before I tried to put any of this into words,” Lainey wrote of her “Aunt Granny.”

“From the time I was little, my granny always had a way of making me feel like I was enough. She never made my dreams feel too big or made me feel like I couldn’t do something. She believed in me before I even knew how to believe in myself.

“Most people can think of at least one bad memory with everyone in their family. I honestly can’t think of one with her.”

Lainey went on to thank fans and supporters for their love, and ended with a final message to Dolly: “Thank you for always believing in me, loving me, and making me feel like I could do anything.”

Dolly had made it clear before her death that she wanted a “small, private service” for immediate family, the singer’s team shared in a statement.

That service was held at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville. She was buried next to Carl Dean, her husband of 60 years who died in March 2025.

Aside from wanting a small service, Dolly did reveal one major detail about her funeral arrangements to fans more than a decade before her death.

“There’s a song called ‘If We Never Meet Again.’ It’s an old country-gospel church song that talks about if we never meet again this side of heaven, I will meet you on that beautiful shore,” she told Entertainment Weekly in a 2014 interview.

“‘Where the charming roses bloom forever and where separations come no more.’ That was my daddy’s favorite. We did sing it at his funeral, and I would like it to be sung at mine.”

It is unclear if there was a live rendition of the song at her funeral; however, Parton has duetted with her goddaughter, pop star Miley Cyrus, on a number of occasions in the past.

Ex-soldier who stabbed fellow pensioner 14 times in ‘moment of madness’ dies in jail

Published

on

Daily Record

Richard Cassidy, 79, stabbed David Parish 14 times at his home in the Borders.

An OAP who murdered a fellow pensioner he believed had sexually abused a woman has died in jail. Richard Cassidy, 79, stabbed David Furnish 14 times in the savage attack at this home in the Scottish Borders in February 2016.

The former soldier was sentenced to 17 years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow in June of 2017. The Scottish Prison Service announced Cassidy died at HMP Shotts on June 26.

Cassidy suffered a heart attack and stroke while in custody but prison bosses have yet to reveal the cause of death. The court heard that after the murder, Cassidy himself contacted the police and handed himself in.

Cassidy’s defence lawyer Brian McConnachie explained that Cassidy went to visit Parish, 74, at his home and tried to get a confession out of him but had no plans of killing him.

He said the killing was a “moment of madness”, but he described the circumstances as “unique”. McConnachie said most people found it “hard to understand” that the then-70-year-old would be capable of murder.

The defence lawyer said: “He had never been in trouble in his life before this incident. He lived a fulfilling life until what he describes as a moment of madness in February 2016.”

However, the judge, Lord Summers, described the murder as “particularly brutal” with 14 stab wounds inflicted on the victim.

Lord Summers said Cassidy showed premeditation on the day of the attack, and referred to a social work report that found he had received Special Forces training while in the Army on how to infiltrate groups by befriending them.

When passing sentence the judge explained he took into account Cassidy’s lack of previous convictions and what he had reportedly been told about Farish as he passed a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years in jail.

No charges had been brought against Mr Farish.
