Veteran sprinter Mazu displayed his usual character pre-race before replicating his dominance at the finish of The Shorts, leaving his competitors trailing in his wake to claim an unexpected win.

Not for the first time, Mazu paused his journey to the starting stalls, refusing to advance for several minutes and kicking out at the horses accompanying the clerk of the course as they attempted to hasten him.

The stand-off eventually concluded, and Mazu channeled his spirited nature into the race, seizing the lead and showing no signs of relinquishing it.

He held on by a neck over Joliestar, with Mazu’s stablemate King’s Secret, trained by Joe Pride, a further nose back in third.

“He walked straight out of here going, no, no I’ll go to the gates, and then stopped up there. Sometimes he can stop two or three times on the way to the gates,” Pride remarked.

“He’s going to beat me sooner or later.

“It’s funny, he’s so reluctant to get there, but then so quick to get home.”

The winner of The Shorts is typically considered for a place in The Everest, but Pride seemed unenthusiastic about pursuing the October feature with the eight-year-old.

Mazu has contested The Everest (1200m) on three occasions, his best result being a third behind Giga Kick in 2022. Pride indicated that while the owners would have the final say, his personal inclination was not to challenge the formidable Ka Ying Rising from Hong Kong.

“To be fair to him, he’s had a few goes in Everests and it’s not really his race,” Pride stated.

“The only thing I would say is if on the day it was wet, he’d probably be in the contest. But other than that, running a nice sixth or seventh doesn’t interest me a lot.”

Pride referred to Mazu as “an old marvel” and expressed great satisfaction with the victory in The Shorts (1100m) on Saturday, as well as the performance of stablemate King’s Secret.

Both sprinters are likely to face each other again later in the carnival, although their next starts might be in different races.

“They could both end up in the Premiere Stakes, but I think maybe with King’s Secret he’ll find a bit more improvement off that run than some of the others, so either the Premiere here or the Gilgai Stakes down in Melbourne, which his brother (Private Eye) won,” Pride suggested.

“The Sydney Stakes is a likely race for them both, and maybe the Russell Balding Stakes as well.”

Rachel King has developed a strong association with Mazu, riding him in his last six starts, including his Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) win in April. She commented that he consistently gives his best, despite his quirks.

“They should never forget about him. He’s so honest,” King said.

“Even though he gives us hell before the race, he really wants to be there.”

In a race where the backmarkers found it difficult to make an impact, the riders of Everest hopefuls Joliestar (second), Headwall (fifth), and Ninja (ninth) all provided positive feedback for their horses under the circumstances.

“It was gifted to the horses on speed. He ran well,” Tommy Berry said of Ninja, the only horse currently confirmed for an Everest slot.

With Mazu’s impressive win in The Shorts, punters can check the latest betting sites for odds on future feature races.

India’s September 22 schedule at the Asian Games 2026 will be packed with medal opportunities and key knockout contests, with the women’s cricket team set to play Sri Lanka in the gold medal match at 10:30 am IST. Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will look to secure the nation’s first gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Games when they take on Sri Lanka in the summit clash.

Shooting will again be in focus, with Elavenil Valarivan and Parth Rakesh Mane competing in the 10m air rifle mixed team qualification from 6:15 am IST. India will also have a busy schedule across team sporting events. The men’s kabaddi team will continue its Group A campaign against South Korea, while the men’s hockey team will face Sri Lanka in a Pool A match. The women’s table tennis team will take on Thailand in the opening round, while India’s men’s and women’s sepak takraw and soft tennis players will also be in action from the morning.

Swimming will see Aryan Nehra compete in the men’s 1,500m freestyle Final B at 7:29 am, while India’s men’s 4x100m medley relay team will contest the heats in the early morning, with the final scheduled later in the day.

Ashes of the Damned

Activate Ol’ Tessie

The Super Easter Egg hunt takes you back to the Ashes of the Damned map. Start your progression by following the walkthrough. Find T.E.D.D.’s head and attach it to Ol’ Tessie, the truck. Drive this vehicle to Blackwater Lake to power up the generator. Next, find the twins’ ghost in various parts of Ashwood.

Here are the locations where they can spawn:

• Lost Cabins
• Rabbit Alley
• Grounded Ship
• Fog Road

Vandorn Farm

Head to the Ashwood Bridge and power up the generator before you drive out to Vandorn Farm on Ol’ Tessie. After finding all ghost twin locations and making them disappear by getting close to the apparitions, you will find the twins atop the farmhouse.

Unlock toybox

Now unlock the Necrofluid Wonder Weapon as you would in a regular playthrough in the Ashes of the Damned. Use a charged attack with the Wonder Weapon to shoot the smoke cloud near the windmill of the farmhouse, where you spotted the twins. To open the box, you must use the Dark Flare Field Upgrade and kill zombies.

Get Pink Crystals

Next, you must head to the monolith forest and find three pink crystal chunks on top of the giant blue rock structures. Use Monkey bombs to distract any zombies nearby while you look for the pink crystals. If you spot one, use the Necrofluid gauntlet to pull it down. With a Fumigator equipped, interact with the crystal, and it will trigger a burst of energy straight into the sky.

Obtain Blue Crystal

Next, a meteor will fall in the southeast direction from Monolith Forest. Interact with it and wait one round to acquire a smaller blue crystal from this crashed rock. Take this crystal and place it inside the toybox unlocked in Vandorn Farm. The box will close and then open to reveal the Ol’ Tessie toy inside. Now wait for an exfil round to save your progress and exit.

Astra Malorum

For the Astra Malorum map, proceed as per the regular playthrough and unlock the Pack-a-Punch as well as the LGM-1 Wonder Weapon. Now head out of the Luminarium to find a box shown below, floating in space. Use any explosive bullet or throwable to make it change position.

Unlock toybox

Head to the spawn area and locate the box once again to hit it with another explosive and change its position once more. It will then move behind Ol’ Tessie in the starting area. Throw a Kazimir grenade right below the box, and it will bring the crate down.

Now get the DG-2 Turret Barrel for Ol’ Tessie by throwing an explosive at the closest floating rock near Abyssal Rim, and then jump off the left side of the rock fragment that floated close to you.

Discharge toybox

Next, you must kill O.S.C.A.R. by weakening his health bar to almost one HP and then shooting him with the DG-2. This will release a wave of electricity that discharges the electrocution of the box and opens it up. Now you must hit some grandfather clocks all around the map to slow down time.

Here are the points of interest where you find these clocks:

• Museum Infinitum
• Luminarium
• Archive of Orbis
• Machina Astralis

Capture UFO

Note that in the Machina Astralis room, there are two clocks. If you were able to hit all clocks within a certain time, you will hear a clock ticking in the background and a slightly faded visual indicating time has slowed down.

Light up lanterns

Now go to the observatory and use the telescope to spot a UFO and target it using the crosshair. Now follow the usual playthrough to get to Mars, put the brain inside the machine atop the stairs, and call in the bird from the far side of the map. Next, activate the four pillars, but do not spawn the final boss.

Bring UFO to Mars

Back in the spawn room, you must find lanterns on walls across a few different points of interest until you come across one that has a whitish glow. ADS while aiming towards that lantern, and it will transfer to an energy orbit revolving around you. Now ADS at unlit lanterns and melee to transfer the energy to them and light them up.

Equip shock charges and head back to Mars. Move to the southeast corner of the courtyard to find two glowing discs. Throw the shock charges directly, aiming at the center of both discs. This should spawn a UFO at the northwest edge of the map. Go back to the Astra Malorum map and grab 4 or 5 energy balls from the lanterns you lit up in the last step and bring them to Mars.

Unlock Alien toy

Towards the northeast corner, you will find four floating mechanisms with four items inside them. Melee them to see which one falls out of the mechanism. If an item does, the UFO will come and pick it up using its tractor beam. Continue this process until a green alien toy spawns. Bring this back to the spawn crash site near Ol’ Tessie and put it inside the toybox.

The box then opens to reveal a Caltheris toy, which you must extract through an exfil round.

Paradox Junction

Load the Psych Grenade in your Tactical slot and start Paradox Junction. Follow the usual playthrough to unlock the Pack-a-Punch. Then head to the north edge of the map in Cul-de-Sac to find a garage with a red door and a chalk drawing on it. Interact with it, and the drawing of a toybox will appear. Go to the second floor of the yellow house and locate the chalk drawing of a question mark.

Unlock toybox

Use the Psych Grenade here to turn the drawing into a key. Bring it outside to interact with the toybox, and it will appear in front of you. With the box now open, travel to the destroyed Nuketown version of the map using time rifts and locate three toy parts. Here are some of the spawn locations of these toy parts:

• Yellow House second floor
• Green House backyard
• Houses on Trinity Ave.
• Truck on Trinity Ave.
• Garage door with colorful chalk drawings on Trinity Ave.

Get toy parts

Once all toy parts are collected on top of the bus, interact with it to start a minigame where the glowing toy will appear in various parts of the map, and you must run through it before the timer runs out. Climb back on top of the bus after this minigame and reach an exfil round to extract another toy back to Her House in Rex Infernus.
