Ed Sheeran CANCELS concerts at Robert Kraft’s NFL stadium… amid Macklemore tour drama

Under-fire Ed Sheeran‘s concerts at Robert Kraft‘s Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, this weekend have been canceled due to bad weather conditions.

The British singer, 35, is facing the biggest backlash of his career after he sensationally dropped US rapper Macklemore from his Loop Tour over pro-Palestine comments he made at the singer’s New Jersey shows earlier this month.

After Macklemore was axed, all of Sheeran’s opening acts – Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe, as well as his backing band Beoga – announced they would be leaving the tour in solidarity with the rapper and Palestine.

Sheeran has since been accused of ‘bowing to the mob’ after he apologized to his fans for his handling of the row.

In a further blow to Sheeran’s reputation, ahead of the now canceled shows, which would have been held on Friday and Saturday, Ticketmaster was offering refunds to fans amid the escalating controversy.

Kraft told TMZ in a statement, ‘Stadium and tour management, along with public safety officials, have been closely monitoring the weather forecast over the past week. Due to the severe weather forecast throughout the weekend, the tour has made the difficult decision to cancel the Ed Sheeran concerts at Gillette Stadium.

‘The decision was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the shows as the top priority. Refunds are available now at the point of purchase. Ticketholders who purchased through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded.’

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Sheeran, Ticketmaster and Gillette Stadium for comment and has yet to hear back.

Macklemore said that his dismissal from the tour by Sheeran came after pressure from Kraft, in response to his pro-Palestinian messaging amid the ongoing conflict with Israel in the Mideast.

Sheeran last Saturday tearfully addressed the issue during his show in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field, saying his messaging was not generally geared toward politics.

‘I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,’ Sheeran said.

Macklemore earlier Thursday announced a series of Free Palestine tour dates beginning next month, with the proceeds earmarked to benefit groups providing aid to Palestinian causes.

‘If these last couple of weeks have shown us anything, it’s that something has shifted over the last three years,’ Macklemore said on Instagram. ‘There has been a collective awakening around Palestinian liberation, the power of billionaires that try to censor that call, and what we expect from artists right now.’

He added, ‘When the billionaire class can decide which voices are allowed on stage and which ones are too dangerous to hear, everyone should be paying attention.’

Efforts by those who purchased tickets were already underway to obtain refunds after Sheeran had dropped Macklemore as his opening act for his North and South America tour dates.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell announced in a news release on Thursday that Ticketmaster had said it will honor hundreds of refund requests for the Gillette Stadium shows amid the controversy.

‘After hearing from nearly 200 consumers who were struggling to obtain refunds from Ticketmaster for Ed Sheeran’s shows at Gillette Stadium this weekend,’ Campbell said, ‘my office jumped into action to demand that consumers be provided a clear path to get their money back if they no longer want to attend due to significant changes to the lineup.

A British family of four are among at least six missing people after a huge explosion which destroyed a building in Athens after a suspected gas leak.

According to local reports, a British man, his wife, their son and their son’s partner were staying in short-term rental accomodation on the first floor.

However it is not known whether they were inside at the time of the explosion.

Meanwhile an elderly couple who lived on the second floor of the property are also missing.

It comes after a massive explosion tore through a building in a historic district of Athens before the structure collapsed.

The explosion happened at around 7.30am today in the district of Plaka, which sits just round the corner from the Acropolis of Athens and the Temple of Zeus.

Officials said earlier that five people are missing and local media has reported three Americans were among those who have not been located, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Several people were injured by the blast, with local media reporting that two women from an adjacent building were taken to Georgios Gennimatas Hospital, while a passerby said they suffered shrapnel wounds from the explosion.

The fire service said they were looking for two elderly people who lived on the building’s top floor, and three tourists who are believed to have rented the apartment below.

A fire service spokesman said: ‘A search and rescue operation with a dog is underway to find anyone who may be trapped.

‘We have learned that an elderly couple and three other people staying in a holiday rental were living in the building, and we are trying to determine whether they were there at the time of the explosion.’

The explosion, attributed at this stage to a gas leak, destroyed the two-floor building and also damaged neighbouring homes.

It broke windows in surrounding buildings and damaged cars parked nearby.

After several hours on Friday, no sign of the missing persons had been found in the debris.

Two women in a neighbouring building were hospitalised with minor injuries, state TV ERT said.

A third person who was passing by was also lightly injured, the station said.

A quiet fan that proved itself during a heatwave

What is the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1?

The Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 is one of the brand’s more straightforward fans. There’s no humidifying or heating here, just a focus on cooling and air purification.

True to Dyson’s design ethos, the Purifier Cool PC1 is bladeless, which makes it safe around kids and pets, and easy to clean. The tower fan uses the company’s renowned technology to project a smooth stream of air, with 10 speed settings and a 350-degree oscillation range that circulates air evenly throughout the room. It’s relatively compact and lightweight, too.

The remote control magnetically attaches to the top of the fan but you can also control the device using the MyDyson companion app.

While it doesn’t offer all the extras of Dyson’s more expensive air purifiers, it’s a solid option if you want reliable cooling without any fuss, which is why it’s our Best Buy Dyson fan.

JUMP TO:

I’ve been testing the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 in my home office, a small-to-medium-sized room that felt more like a sauna than a workplace during the recent heatwaves. While I wasn’t precisely measuring its air purification qualities (you can find that review on our best Dyson fan round-up), the windows open onto a main road so I was able to test out its ability to handle a steady stream of traffic fumes, dust and general pollution drifting in.

I used the fan over several weeks to see how it performs on a day-to-day basis, assessing all of the usual metrics: how well it cools the room, how quiet it is during use, how intuitive the controls are and whether the design fits into a regular living or working space. And finally, as Dyson is known for its premium pricing, is the Purifier Cool PC1 worth the outlay?

Manchester City’s relegation odds after 115 charges verdict:

  1. Guilty charges – Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges that the Premier League levied against them. The verdict comes three-and-a-half years after City first learned they were accused of the breaches of the top-flight’s financial regulations.
  2. Relegation odds – Betfair have slashed City’s odds of 11/1 to be relegated in the current campaign to 9/2 after news of the verdict broke. The drastic change in odds now leaves Enzo Maresca’s side with an 18% chance of dropping to the Championship.
  3. Title odds fade – The Premier League giants had odds of 6/5 to win the Premier League after enjoying a stunning start with five wins in five games, leaving them top of the table. However, news of the guilty charges has shortened their title-winning odds to 5/2.

Five missing after Athens explosion collapses building near Acropolis

Published

on

Daily Record

A huge explosion, believed to have been caused by a suspected gas leak, has caused a two-storey building to collapse close to the Acropolis in Athens

Five individuals, including three tourists, are feared missing in Athens following a massive explosion that brought down a two-storey structure near the Acropolis. The blast tore through the area amid suspicions of a gas leak, causing the frontage of a 20th century property to crumble.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics and firefighters, rushed to Lysicratous Street – mere minutes from the Acropolis – shortly after 7.30am local time this morning, approximately 5.30am BST, with the vicinity swiftly sealed off. The explosion reportedly triggered a blaze, according to eKathimerini.

The Greek fire service confirmed five individuals are unaccounted for, the Mirror reports. Shocked witnesses observed debris scattered across the narrow thoroughfares.

Meanwhile, plumes of smoke billowed from the scene, while shattered windows and damaged vehicles littered the area surrounding the stricken building. The fire brigade revealed it had pulled two women from the structure in Plaka, amongst the Greek capital’s most ancient districts.

Both casualties were transported to hospital. The fire service stated 24 firefighters were deployed to the incident, though stopped short of confirming what triggered the explosion.

The blast is thought to have resulted from a suspected gas leak, ERT reports. Neighbouring properties close to the explosion site also sustained damage, fire service sources indicated.

Leaving already? Harry and Meghan’s reported threat to quit Britain if they are refused taxpayer funded security is ‘akin to blackmail’, declares RICHARD EDEN on this week’s Palace Confidential

Published

on

On the latest Palace Confidential, Richard Eden and a panel of royal experts discuss reports Harry and Meghan are already considering a move back to California if they are denied taxpayer funded security

On the latest Palace Confidential, Diary Editor Richard Eden and a panel of royal experts discuss reports Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are already considering a move back to California if they are denied taxpayer funded security.

At the weekend, the Mail’s Editor at Large Alison Boshoff reported that friends say the Sussexes could leave the UK if a Home Office review refuses them automatic police protection.

Speaking to columnist Sarah Vine and royal biographer Robert Hardman, Eden said he views the couple’s reported ultimatum, so soon after their arrival, as ‘akin to blackmail’, an attempt to pile pressure on the review.

He added it would be ‘outrageous’ to give the couple, who the King recently restated are effectively private citizens, the same protection as working royals.

Harry lost automatic taxpayer funded security in 2020 after the couple stepped back from official duties and moved overseas, and failed to overturn the decision in the courts. Their return has now triggered a fresh review.

‘My goodness, that makes the whole thing seem like… some sort of blackmail,’ Eden argued, as though the couple were saying: ‘We’ll move to Britain in an attempt to get the taxpayers to pay for security.’

At the weekend, the Mail’s Editor at Large Alison Boshoff reported that friends say the Sussexes could leave the UK if a Home Office review refuses them automatic police protection

He continued: ‘The implications of this are massive because if they get it, what that then means is Harry and Meghan can come and go, and they’ll still be getting police protection, and also they can say that they want it in America.

‘So those hard pressed taxpayers in the US might find that they’re having to pay for security too. So it could ease any money worries that they have.

‘Harry and Meghan would be absolutely thrilled. They’d have these huge costs paid for by someone else.’

If the review were to go the Sussexes’ way, the panel questioned whether they could be regarded as internationally protected persons.

This status, the same as that given to diplomats, would mean other countries would also have to protect them when they travel overseas.

The couple argue that as the King’s son, who also served his country in Afghanistan, Harry is as much a target and as deserving of protection as any other senior royal.

However, Eden pointed out that the King’s own siblings do not get such protection, only receiving it while carrying out official royal duties.

Vine predicted it was an ‘inevitability’ that Harry will return to official duties in some way, as the price of being awarded security.

‘They will say you can have the protection, but you need to start doing some royal duties,’ she said.

‘Maybe not Meghan, just Harry. He’s good at that stuff and if he does it on his own, then she doesn’t need to be involved. She can’t get upset about it. It sort of makes sense.’

Hardman, however, argued that security decisions are made on the threat alone, not on a transactional basis.

He said: ‘I don’t think it can be on the basis of, you get an extra copper with an earpiece if you cut a few ribbons. It doesn’t really work like that.

‘The people judging security are not interested in plaque unveilings, ribbon cuttings and hospital openings. They’re just interested in the threat, and I think that’s how it’ll be decided.’

Dale Harvey of The Great British Beer Crawl visits Thirsk

Nottingham-resident Dale Harvey of the Great British Pub Crawl enjoyed a lunchtime stop-off after a couple of days visiting pubs in Tyne & Wear.

Dale has been touring the country’s pubs for more than four years, having called in at 10,389 of them.

The 44-year-old is doing this to raise awareness of pubs, aiming to save them as part of his Defend Indy Beer campaign.

He has a massive following on social media, with regular postings on Facebook and You Tube.

On You Tube, he describes Thirsk as “a beautiful little town” with “lots of pubs open at 11Am or earlier.” It was also “a gorgeous little place” and a “hive of activity.”

Dale called in first at the Red Bear, a Craft Union Owned pub, which he said was a friendly place, and “a nice little boozer.”

He liked its fireplace, its historic character and he was pleased to see it so busy with 15 customers at 11am.

Next came The Cross Keys, just around the corner, which he describes as “a sweet looking place”. The “traditional old pub” has been run by the same family since 1982 and dates back to the 1700s. Dale  noted it had plenty of sports teams, a “nice cosy feel and a lovely landlord.”

The Black Bull on the Corner of Market Square is owned by Proper Pubs, which he described as a “beautiful old coaching inn, dating back to the 1700s.”

He also said on Facebook: “A decent keg only range on the bar, lovely staff and plenty of beautiful old features within the pub still.”

Across the square Dale found the local Wetherspoons, called ‘The Three Tuns.’  He noted it was a Wetherspoons hotel and they always have ‘decent’ rooms at ‘not bad’ prices.

He said the venue was ‘massive, huge’ with a nice look and feel, especially the alcoves, nooks and crannies all over the place. There were also “some really decent guest ales on offer.”

Nearby, the Golden Fleece, run by the Coaching Inn Group, “shouted out the most” to him. Dale described in on You Tube as absolutely beautiful”, before adding: “This place oozes class and sophistication, an absolutely gorgeous place.”

He lauded its beer garden, with pizza oven, great food menu, beautiful dining areas and a nicely done bar area, all creating “a top place.”

Just outside the town centre Dale enjoyed The Frankland Arms, noting its “great ales” decent pub style food and huge beer garden with children’s play area.

Back in the town centre, Dale came to Little Three, which he says is probably “the ‘standout pub’ of the town.” He enjoyed its quirky features and noted it offered “five amazing casks.”

He added on You Tube: “I absolutely love this one. It’s a phenomenal little pub, an absolute 10/10.”

Jewish group barred from 90th anniversary commemoration of Battle of Holbeck Moor – when Oswald Mosley’s Blackshirts were chased out of Leeds – because they ‘gave platform to a Reform speaker’

A Jewish group has been barred from a 90th anniversary commemoration of when fascists were chased out of Leeds, because it ‘platformed a Reform speaker’.

Stop The Hate Leeds, a pro-Israel campaign group, was told its presence at the event on Sunday would be ‘divisive’ due to its members’ political views.

Organiser Philip Marks said he was devastated as his father, Eric, and grandfather, Howard, were involved in the 1936 Battle of Holbeck Moor, when fascist politician Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists (BUF) clashed with the people of Holbeck.

Mr Marks said: ‘The organisers have told us they consider our members far-Right because they support Reform.

‘It’s deeply disappointing that only Jewish people of a certain political persuasion can attend. Can you imagine any other group being told what political views they can and can’t have?

‘Our members are really upset. The Battle of Holbeck Moor is directly related to many Jewish families in Leeds. They stood up for liberal democracy in this country.’

The Battle of Holbeck Moor took place on September 27, 1936 when Mosley’s Blackshirts held a rally in Leeds.

Around 1,000 Blackshirts marched to Holbeck Moor, where they were met by an anti-fascist crowd of about 30,000 people, organised by the Communist Party.

Mosley tried to address his supporters, but protesters drowned him out by singing The Red Flag and shouting. The confrontation turned violent, with protesters throwing stones at the Blackshirts, who were eventually forced to retreat from the moor.

The anniversary, which will include a march through Leeds, is being organised by the local branch of Stand Up To Racism.

In an email to the group, Stop The Hate Leeds said it intended to attend the march ‘with our own flags and banners, as an expression of our identity and of our community’s direct connection to the history being commemorated’.

Yesterday, Stand Up To Racism replied: ‘You have shown to not support SUTR and have welcomed Reform officials to your events. You also support a far-Right government in Israel conducting a genocide in Gaza.

‘We want to unite people against the far Right and feel that your presence as an organisation would be divisive and we will regard it as countering our event.

‘In light of this we would respectfully request that you do not attend the event as an organisation and hope you can appreciate the reasons why.’

Mr Marks denied that his group had ever hosted a Reform speaker and distanced himself from a national pro-Israel organisation called Stop The Hate UK.

In a statement, Stand Up To Racism Leeds said it would welcome involvement from people such as Mr Marks whose families were involved in the Battle of Holbeck Moor. However, it would not welcome Stop The Hate as a group.

‘We also reassert our unwavering commitment to opposing antisemitism from the 1930s to today,’ the statement added.

Katrina Mayer, of Stand Up To Racism, added: ‘As someone whose family were killed in the Holocaust, I encourage everyone who opposes fascism and antisemitism to join us on Sunday.

‘Stop the Hate are certainly not welcome at an anti-fascist event. They are trying to disrupt an event that is remembering the struggle against fascism in the 1930s and building unity against the far-right today.’

Five people are missing after an explosion and building collapse in Athens, the fire service says

Three tourists are reported to be amongst five individuals unaccounted for in Athens following a massive explosion that caused a two-storey building to collapse near the Acropolis. The blast struck the area after a suspected gas leak, with the facade of a 20th century property crumbling as a result.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics and fire crews, rushed to Lysicratous Street – just a short distance from the Acropolis – shortly after 7.30am local time, approximately 5.30am BST, with the surrounding area swiftly cordoned off. The explosion is reported to have ignited a fire, according to eKathimerini.

The Greek fire service confirmed that five people remain unaccounted for, as reported by the Mirror, while horrified bystanders looked on as debris littered the narrow surrounding streets.

Smoke was observed billowing above the scene, with shattered windows and damaged vehicles visible near the stricken building. The fire brigade confirmed that two women had been rescued from the building, located in Plaka, one of the Greek capital’s oldest neighbourhoods.

Both women were subsequently transferred to hospital. The fire service confirmed that 24 firefighters were deployed at the scene, though the precise cause of the explosion has yet to be officially confirmed.

It is understood the blast was triggered by a suspected gas leak, according to ERT, with neighbouring buildings also sustaining damage, as confirmed by the Fire Service.
