Insurance giant AIG has become the first Fortune 500 company to acquire a stake in an English women’s football club with its investment in Salford City Lionesses.

The move represents a further deepening of the existing partnership between AIG and Salford City, the club co-owned by former Manchester United legends Gary Neville and David Beckham.

AIG took a stake in Salford City last year and swiftly became its largest shareholder. The firm also holds front-of-shirt, training kit and stadium sponsorship rights at the club.

In a separate announcement, England star-turned-media pundit Jill Scott has been appointed as Salford’s chief women’s football advisor.

“We are incredibly grateful to AIG for their commitment to Salford City and this amazing investment in the Lionesses,” said Neville, as reported by City AM.

“We’re fortunate to have the backing of a world-class brand, which will be right behind our Women’s and Men’s teams in their next chapter.”

AIG president Eric Andersen said: “We are proud to expand our commitment to Salford City ahead of this exciting next stage of growth.

“Our interest in supporting the Lionesses reflects AIG’s long-term commitment to advancing opportunities for women in business, sport and society, building on our investment in the AIG Women’s Open, which has elevated women’s professional golf.

“We’re excited to support the creation of professional opportunities and career pathways for the Salford City Lionesses, on and off the pitch.”

The partnership with the insurer – a sponsor of Manchester United during Neville and Beckham’s playing days at the club – will also see Salford City don a change strip in “AIG blue”.

Neither the financial terms of the agreement nor the extent of AIG’s shareholding in Salford City Lionesses have been made public.

Scott’s appointment comes despite her playing career with Manchester City and deepens her ties to Neville, alongside whom she appears on the Stick To Football YouTube show.

Salford City Lionesses have yet to replicate the men’s side’s rise into the professional game and presently compete in the fifth tier of English women’s football.

“I’m incredibly excited to be stepping into this new role, helping to drive the Lionesses forward and achieve our powerful ambitions,” said Scott.

“With the backing and knowledge of AIG, and a team of passionate, talented people at Salford, I have no doubt that the years ahead will be some of our most memorable yet.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on international future ahead of Australia debut

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on international future ahead of Australia debut
NFL kicks off in Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia — The NFL is making history this week with its first-ever regular-season game in Australia, but Commissioner Roger Goodell is already thinking well into the future.

“Whether it’s media, or whether it’s labor, or whether it’s our international plans or what we’re doing with stadiums, all of that [requires] taking a 5-, 10-, 15-year look, and it’s critical to do that,” Goodell said in an exclusive interview with CNBC here ahead of the Week 1 game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams, set to kick off Thursday night at 8:35 pm ET.

“If you’re not, you’re being irresponsible,” he added.

Earlier this month, Goodell, 67, signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him as the league’s commissioner until March 2031. This year marks Goodell’s 20th season on the job.

He has overseen significant growth and change for the most popular U.S. sports league, including the addition of a 17th regular season game and its sale of media rights to streaming platforms. But no change may factor more into his long-term plans than adding recent regular-season games in a range of countries from Germany and France to Brazil and Mexico.

NFL games are routinely the most-watched programming in the U.S., but international interest is still sparse. Last year’s Week 1 international game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers — streamed on YouTube — was watched by 18.5 million viewers in the U.S. and just 1.2 million abroad.

Goodell’s global growth plans include playing nine games outside of the U.S. in 2026 and 10 international contests in 2027. He’s previously said he’d like to get that number to 16, but he’ll need player buy-in to do so.

The league’s current collective bargaining agreement caps the number of international games at 10. The CBA expires in March 2031 — aligning with Goodell’s contract.

Goodell has also said he expects to one day have a team based permanently outside the U.S.

Hypothetically, Goodell said, he could envision an NFL with multiple teams based in Europe. Still, he declined to put a time frame on establishing an international franchise because “it’s all part of a broader plan to continue to develop our business.”

“As you develop your business, at some point in time, you may get to that place where you say, you know, putting a franchise or franchises globally is a good idea,” Goodell said. “You’re looking down the road, maybe you do a division in Europe, so they’re playing against one another. The beauty and the advantage we have is that we’re playing once a week.”

The league’s international growth is also tied to expanding global media exposure, he said. Netflix has the global broadcast rights to the 49ers-Rams game from Melbourne.

“We’re looking at how we continue to grow our media exposure globally,” Goodell said. “More and more of our games are on free television and on media partners that are promoting the game, and they’re expanding the game, and that’s really important to us.”

Watch: Three times Trump has promised money to Americans

US President Donald Trump says he would give $5,000 to every American adult if the midterm elections go his way. Turning that promise into reality, however, would face significant hurdles. The proposal could cost more than $1.3 trillion, would require congressional approval and could face legal scrutiny regarding soliciting votes for money.

BBC’s Samira Hussain looks at other times the president has made similar promises.

League could rework TV packages

League could rework TV packages
NFL considers repackaging its media rights

MELBOURNE, Australia — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he will consider reworking game packages when the league inks its next media rights deal to adjust for modern TV consumption habits and the shift to streaming.

“One of the things we’re doing as a league is talking to our partners, talking to future partners, potential partners … and evaluating, should we repackage our current packages? Should we think differently about where we go with those things?” Goodell said in an exclusive interview with CNBC ahead of the Week 1 game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams, the league’s first regular-season matchup in Australia. The game will take place Thursday night at 8:35 p.m. ET.

The NFL currently sells two Sunday afternoon game packages, a Sunday Night Football slate, a Monday Night Football package, and Thursday Night Football games. Fox and Paramount Skydance-owned CBS have the Sunday afternoon game rights, while NBC has Sunday Night Football, Disney’s ESPN and ABC own Monday Night Football and Amazon has Thursday Night Football.

Netflix also bought the rights to five additional NFL games this season.

The NFL has an opt-out clause that it can trigger at the end of the 2029-30 season to redo and resell its existing packages. Goodell wouldn’t say if the league plans to take advantage of that option.

“We don’t have to make that decision today. That’s the reason you have an option,” Goodell said. “[What] we said all along is that the option would be incredibly valuable to the NFL — to be able to evaluate what’s happening in the media landscape, to be able to look at the things that are happening out there and make the best decision for our fans and for our clubs and how we make sure we present our game in the best possible way and do it with the proper value.”

Several of the NFL’s current media partners are undergoing significant transformations this year.

Paramount is attempting to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for $110 billion in a deal that’s been delayed amid an antitrust challenge. Fox has agreed to buy Roku for $22 billion. Comcast said earlier this year it plans to spin off NBCUniversal.

The shifting media landscape is likely to factor in when the NFL renegotiates its packages.

Goodell also noted that reaching fans globally is a new priority for the league, which will play games in countries including Spain, France and Brazil this season. Netflix owns the global broadcast rights to the 49ers-Rams game.

Still, most NFL game rights are U.S.-only.

“The world is changing for our partners. It’s changing for us. It’s changing for fans. Our fans are moving to other platforms,” said Goodell. “I think one of the challenges for us is to look at the changes, evaluate what’s working, what’s not, what we think is going to work beyond those option dates and the partners that can bring the greatest opportunity to reach those fans on a global basis. … We’ve never looked at it that way until recently.”

Goodell said broadcast TV will continue to play a major role in the league’s media rights strategy to ensure that local markets have free, over-the-air access to games. Local broadcast stations simulcast games on streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video so regional fans can watch.

“One hundred percent of our games are available on broadcast television. I see that continuing,” said Goodell.
