XRP News: Upbit Turnover Slips, XRP Keeps Top Spot
Upbit recorded 8.35 trillion won ($6.28 billion) in trading volume for the week ending October 18, 2026, a 15.5% decline from the prior week. XRP nevertheless ranked first on South Korea’s largest exchange despite the news, ahead of Bitcoin and USDT. The contrast is clear: overall activity cooled, but trading attention remained concentrated in XRP.
There was a 19.56% fall in trading volume across major South Korean platforms in the preceding week, a separate period that points to cooling; against that comparison, Upbit’s 15.5% contraction was milder. During mid-October, its 24-hour trading volumes ranged from about $340 million to more than $1.2 billion on active days.
Upbit has consistently held the leading position in South Korea and regularly outpaced rival Bithumb. Upbit volumes have often reacted to moves in domestic stock markets, suggesting Korean traders may treat equities and crypto as competing or neighboring risk exposures.
At the same time, South Korea has been blocking 27 offshore exchanges, which belongs to the wider regulatory backdrop.
For now, lower turnover can leave order books thinner, increasing the potential price impact of large market orders. That is a liquidity consideration.

Good News for XRP? What the Order Book Says?
XRP finished ahead of Bitcoin and USDT, with Bitcoin second and USDT third. That ordering shows where reported trading activity was concentrated on Upbit. USDT’s third-place finish adds a different kind of signal: it shows the stablecoin was among the exchange’s most-traded assets.
The key figures are best read together, without treating turnover as a directional price indicator:
Trade XRP on Bybit and Get a Chance to Win Our $1,000 USDT Airdrop
The next weekly print will show whether Upbit turnover stabilizes near 8.35 trillion won or continues to contract. XRP’s position at the top of the volume table is the other useful checkpoint: retaining it through a quieter market would confirm continued relative concentration.
The preceding 19.56% sector-wide decline also frames the competitive question. Bithumb and other domestic venues face the challenge of attracting activity in a softer market, not merely taking share from Upbit.
Until fresh figures clarify both aggregate turnover and asset rankings, the current data support a narrower conclusion: trading cooled, while XRP remained Upbit’s most-traded asset.

Software’s new consolidator gets big vote of confidence from Berkshire
Guests during the Bending Spoons initial public offering (IPO) at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York, US, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images
At the time of its Nasdaq debut in July, Bending Spoons was a little-known holding company out of Italy that owned older internet names like AOL, Vimeo, Eventbrite and Evernote.
Less than four months later, the Milan-based firm has emerged as a surprising home for former high-flying software startups that have been thrust aside by the artificial intelligence boom. Its M&A plan got a major boost this week from the most famous holding company on the planet: Berkshire Hathaway.
Berkshire, which Bending Spoons describes as a “longstanding inspiration” for its strategy, has now invested over $900 million in the company, including a $330 million stake disclosed on Wednesday. Wall Street loved the deal, sending Bending Spoons’ stock up 41%, though some of those gains were lost later in the week, leaving the company with a market cap of about $30 billion.
“Berkshire’s decision to add to its position just a few months after the IPO and at these levels provides another vote of confidence in the Bending Spoons model from one of the world’s most respected long-term investors,” wrote analysts at Mizuho, in a report after the announcement.
The other big news out of Bending Spoons this week underscores the flipside of the business: job cuts. In August, Bending Spoons announced it was buying workflow software provider Airtable for about $1.3 billion, or almost 90% below the company’s peak valuation from late 2021. Bending Spoons said Monday that a “large portion of the pre-acquisition team” from Airtable would be leaving with “substantial separation packages.” Layoffs were previously implemented at Evernote, Vimeo, WeTransfer and others in the portfolio.
For the technology industry, Bending Spoons’ moves represent the latest example of how quickly fortunes are turning in the AI era, as new agents powered by large language models displace software developers and the products they built. With Anthropic and OpenAI marching toward trillion-dollar valuations, businesses are putting more valuable work in their hands at the expense of a host of software-as-a-service names, creating a phenomenon that’s become known as the “SaaSpocalypse.”
Shares of Intuit, HubSpot and Adobe are all down at least 30% this year, and a long list of private SaaS companies that were once venture darlings are now struggling to find capital, with the public market showing no appetite for IPOs. Last month, Bending Spoons agreed to buy collaboration software vendor Miro, once valued at $17.5 billion, for $1.36 billion.
“You’re either like a hot thing or you’re nothing,” said Ethan Kurzweil, founder and managing partner at Chemistry VC and a veteran software investor. Kurzweil said he uses Airtable, and said there are plenty of good SaaS products on the market led by solid teams, “but they’re not on the frontier anymore.”
An app turned acquirer
Bending Spoons was launched in 2013 by friends Luca Ferrari, the CEO, Matteo Danieli and Francesco Patarnello. A mobile app they’d created called Evertale failed to take off, and they used the $40,000 they had left to build an operating company instead of “products nobody wanted,” according to the IPO prospectus.
Bending Spoons has announced all of its biggest deals in the last few years, beginning with Evernote in 2022, followed by Brightcove in 2024, and Vimeo, AOL and Eventbrite in 2025.
The company held its IPO on June 30, raising about $1.7 billion at $29 a share, and hit the Nasdaq the next day. The stock closed Friday at $47.07.
Stock chart of Bending Spoons since its July 1st initial public offering date.
Prior to Bending Spoons’ recent jump into enterprise software, some of the leading acquirers in the space over the past decade were private equity behemoths Thoma Bravo and Vista Equity Partners. Those firms were aiming to buy what they viewed as undervalued SaaS companies and, through a combination of cost cuts, efficiency improvements and rollups, turn them into assets that could be sold or taken public at a higher price.
Bending Spoons is using a different playbook. The company isn’t looking for eventual exits but rather wants to generate profits from the businesses it buys, similar to the Warren Buffett model. But unlike Berkshire, Bending Spoons’ focus is technology, and it’s taking a hands-on approach with its own software, operations and personnel decisions.
Nick Mehta, former CEO of cloud software vendor Gainsight, said private equity firms are limited now because “they got their nose bloodied.”
“They paid much higher prices and have so many troubled companies that it’s difficult for them to take swings now,” said Mehta, who sold Gainsight to Vista in 2020.
Thoma Bravo and Vista didn’t respond to requests for interviews. Bending Spoons told CNBC in a statement that it hadn’t been outbid for a target in “several years.”
As the company started jumping into SaaS, Mehta said “Bending Spooned” became a verb in Silicon Valley, referring to companies getting scooped up for pennies on the dollar.
“Unfortunately, a lot of my friends in that game are stuck,” Mehta said. “Investors want out but there are no buyers. Anything pre-ChatGPT is legacy now.”
Lloyd Walmsley, an analyst at Mizuho, said Bending Spoons’ model is distinct from the older buyout approach.
“I think there aren’t a lot of people that do what these guys do in terms of the depth of operations and the willingness to make substantial product changes,” Walmsley said in an interview. “It’s not typical of traditional private equity firms to make anywhere near this level of change.”

For customers of the companies that Bending Spoons buys, sudden price hikes can follow.
In April 2023, months after the Evernote acquisition, Bending Spoons lifted the annual personal subscription price to $130 from $70. Later, the company changed its offerings, charging $100 for its so-called starter plan and $250 for “Evernote Advanced,” compared to the $170 it had been charging for the pro plan.
“My first reaction was like, Oh man, I guess I have to switch to OneNote,” said Walmsley, referring to Microsoft’s notetaking app. But he said he stuck with Evernote.
“They’re really savvy at finding these things that they provide a lot of value, and the switching costs are really high,” Walmsley said. “The price isn’t that high relative to the switching cost.”
Bending Spoons uses the profits from its portfolio companies for future growth, the “overwhelming majority” of which comes from doing more deals, Ferrari told CNBC in an interview on Thursday.
“There are certain opportunities for improvement we can unlock over the first few years, and then the business will have whatever organic growth is intrinsic in that market,” Ferrari said.
For Berkshire and its fellow Bending Spoons investors, the bet is still unproven.
The products have to remain desirable enough that customers are willing to pay up at a time when AI is squeezing margins across much of the software sector. In its first earnings report as a public company in August, Bending Spoons said revenue more than doubled from a year earlier to over $700 million, with growth almost entirely driven by acquisitions, while net income climbed 171% to $177 million.
That was before the Airtable deal had closed and Miro had yet to be announced. In the coming quarters and years, Wall Street will get a clear picture of whether the firm’s structure can revive software.
On the earnings call in August, an analyst asked whether Airtable represents a long-term shift in the M&A strategy towards enterprise.
Ferrari said that about half of Bending Spoons’ revenue already comes from professional businesses, largely through Brightcove and Vimeo, which has an enterprise component. The focus on software of late, he said, has more to do with where he’s finding value after a hefty selloff.
“Most enterprise SaaS businesses were valued at irrationally high levels until somewhat recently,” Ferrari said. “We never saw those prices making any sense.”
— CNBC’s Ari Levy contributed to this report.

Deutsche Bank targets Asia crypto custody expansion in 2027 as German launch nears
Deutsche Bank (DB) plans to bring its crypto custody service to Asia in 2027, extending its push into digital assets as it prepares to launch the service in Germany within weeks.
The German banking giant, Reuters reported citing the firm’s co-head, also plans to offer stablecoin conversion, tokenized deposits and services that help clients issue digital bonds and other blockchain-based securities.
The move could give institutional clients in Asia access to crypto services through an established global bank, without having to manage their own crypto wallets or private keys. It’s unclear which Asian financial services it will target first.
Deutsche Bank’s custody service will allow corporate and institutional clients to hold and transfer cryptocurrencies, with the bank handling the technology needed to keep the assets secure.
The bank said in September that its initial offering would support bitcoin, ether and stablecoins including USDC, EURC and EURAU. The German launch remains subject to regulatory approval.
The bank received authorization from Germany’s financial regulator, BaFin, under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules on October 12, according to the European Securities and Markets Authority’s interim register.

Michael Saylor hints at more Bitcoin buys as Strategy holds 848,250 BTC
Michael Saylor has hinted at another Bitcoin purchase for Strategy after the company reported holdings of 848,250 BTC, acquired for approximately $64 billion, in its latest weekly disclosure.
Summary
- Michael Saylor hinted at further Bitcoin accumulation, although Strategy has not confirmed another purchase this weekend.
- Strategy’s latest filing shows holdings of 848,250 BTC, acquired for approximately $64 billion including transaction costs.
- The company bought 250 Bitcoin for $21.5 million during the week ending October 11, its latest disclosure.
- Strategy spent $192.4 million buying back STRC shares, nearly nine times its weekly Bitcoin purchase expenditure.
- Bitcoin traded near $81,000 on October 18, keeping Strategy’s holdings above their reported average acquisition cost.
In an October 18 post on X, the Strategy co-founder wrote, “We found room for more orange,” alongside a chart showing the company’s Bitcoin buying history. The message suggested further accumulation but did not disclose a transaction amount, purchase date or confirmation of an executed trade.
Strategy’s latest official report, released October 12, showed that the company had purchased 250 BTC for 21.5millionduringtheweekendingOctober11.Ithadspentconsiderablymore—192.4 million—buying back its STRC preferred shares during the same period.
Bitcoin was trading near $81,000 on October 18, according to CoinGecko, placing the market price above Strategy’s reported average Bitcoin acquisition cost of $75,444.
Saylor hints at another Bitcoin purchase without confirming a deal
Saylor’s Sunday post continued his practice of publishing charts showing Strategy’s Bitcoin transactions, with purchases represented by orange markers.
His message did not say how many coins the company might acquire or whether an additional transaction had already taken place.
The latest confirmed ownership figure remains 848,250 BTC, according to the company’s October 12 regulatory disclosure, covering activity through October 11.
Strategy’s purchases can be funded through several sources, including sales of common shares, preferred stock offerings and available company cash.
A new chart or social media message, however, does not establish that a transaction has been completed. Confirmation normally comes through the company’s financial disclosures, which identify the number of Bitcoin acquired, total spending and the resulting balance. Earlier this month, Saylor shared a similar message before the company announced its next weekly transactions.
On October 4, he posted another accumulation chart with the words “More orange than ever,” while Strategy’s latest disclosed Bitcoin holdings stood at 847,666 BTC. Crypto.news previously covered the October teaser, which followed a confirmed purchase of 1,665 BTC during the preceding reporting period. The October 18 post comes after Strategy released another set of figures showing a smaller weekly Bitcoin acquisition and substantial preferred-share repurchases.
A new filing covering purchases after October 11 would be needed to determine whether the latest message preceded an actual transaction.
Strategy holds 848,250 Bitcoin after buying 250 BTC
In its October 12 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Strategy reported purchasing 250 BTC between October 5 and October 11.
The company spent approximately $21.5 million on those coins, paying an average of $86,194 per Bitcoin, including fees and expenses. Following that purchase, total holdings reached 848,250 BTC. Strategy reported aggregate acquisition costs of approximately $64 billion and an average purchase price of $75,444 per coin.
The holding represents roughly 4.04% of Bitcoin’s maximum supply of 21 million coins. That comparison uses Bitcoin’s fixed maximum issuance, not the number of coins currently circulating or available on exchanges. Strategy funded $21 million of the latest purchase using proceeds from sales of its Class A common stock, MSTR. Another $500,000 came from existing company cash.
The company sold 125,183 MSTR shares during the week, generating approximately $21 million in net proceeds. Its filing showed that approximately $18.81 billion of MSTR shares remained available for future issuance and sale under its existing at-the-market program as of October 11.
The availability of that issuance capacity does not mean the company has already sold those shares or committed the proceeds to Bitcoin purchases. Strategy’s reported average cost of $75,444 remains below Bitcoin’s October 18 market price. CoinGecko placed BTC at approximately $81,059 during the market check, with its 24-hour trading range running from $80,823 to $82,178.
At that price, multiplying 848,250 BTC by $81,059 gives an indicative portfolio value of approximately $68.76 billion. Compared with its reported $64 billion acquisition cost, the difference is around $4.76 billion before accounting for other company financial obligations, taxes or valuation adjustments. Those estimates depend on the market price used for the calculation and are not equivalent to Strategy’s company-level net profit.
STRC buybacks exceed latest Bitcoin spending
Although Strategy continued buying Bitcoin during the week ending October 11, most of the spending disclosed across its Bitcoin acquisitions and preferred-share repurchases went toward STRC.
The company bought back 1,932,145 shares of its Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock for approximately $192.4 million. That compares with the $21.5 million spent purchasing Bitcoin during the same seven-day reporting period.
Dividing the two amounts shows that the STRC repurchase was approximately 8.95 times the value of the Bitcoin purchase. The comparison covers two disclosed transactions, not all of Strategy’s corporate spending. STRC is one of several preferred-stock instruments issued by Strategy to raise capital and finance its operations. The security pays variable dividends, creating ongoing financial obligations for the company.
Repurchasing preferred shares can reduce the number of outstanding securities on which Strategy must make future dividend payments.
However, the October 12 filing does not establish that management chose to repurchase STRC specifically because its yield had reached 12.31%, as asserted in the supplied report. Strategy’s previous weekly capital allocation report covered the same $192.4 million buyback alongside the acquisition of 250 BTC.
A subsequent analysis of its share repurchases examined the distinction between funds used to buy cryptocurrency and those used to manage the company’s preferred-stock obligations.
According to the company’s official filing, approximately $354.8 million remained authorized under its digital credit securities repurchase program after the latest transactions. An additional $1 billion authorization remained available under its separate MSTR common-stock repurchase program. Neither authorization represents a completed transaction. The amounts establish the remaining capacity under the announced programs.
Strategy retains $5.52 billion in dollar assets
Alongside its cryptocurrency holdings and preferred-share repurchases, Strategy reported substantial dollar-denominated assets. As of October 11, its designated USD Reserve totaled $4.88 billion, while other USD Cash stood at $640.5 million.
Combined, those balances equaled approximately $5.52 billion. The company’s filings describe the USD Reserve as money maintained to support preferred-stock dividends and interest payments on outstanding debt. Its separate USD Cash balance serves a different purpose, supporting general Bitcoin treasury activities, possible Bitcoin acquisitions, reserve additions and other capital-management uses.
During the October 5–11 period, Strategy used $500,000 of USD Cash to supplement the proceeds from common-stock sales used to purchase Bitcoin. The filing does not indicate that the entire combined $5.52 billion is intended for new Bitcoin acquisitions. The company had previously reported using part of its available cash to repurchase preferred shares, making its capital position dependent on more than the size of its Bitcoin holdings.
In related corporate treasury activity, an October 14 comparison of share buybacks examined how Strategy and Japanese Bitcoin holder Metaplanet were managing purchases of their own securities alongside cryptocurrency exposure. Strategy’s October 12 filing specified that $17.51 billion of STRC shares remained available for issuance and sale under its at-the-market offering program.
It reported no STRC shares sold during the latest week, while its common-stock sales supplied nearly all the funding for the newly acquired 250 BTC. The company ended that reporting period with $640.5 million in general-purpose USD Cash and $4.88 billion in its designated reserve.

Chip-stock bets lost $52 million in 10 minutes with Wall Street shut
The selling started on Binance, according to a review of the trades by David Jeong, chief executive of trading firm Tread.fi, who placed the first large SanDisk and Micron sell orders on Binance at 21:21:59 UTC.
Less than a second later, orders hit Hyperliquid, a crypto exchange where Trade XYZ lists stock-tracking contracts, and roughly 10 addresses opened bets against six chip-linked contracts within 1.8 seconds.
Binance handled about $21.9 million of SanDisk trading in that first minute, against $3.1 million on Trade XYZ.
Memory-chip shares were already coming off a rough week as investors weighed new competition from Chinese chipmaker CXMT.
With the stock market shut, there was no real share price for these contracts to follow, so traders were reacting only to each other. Trade XYZ’s rules let trading on the platform set its own reference prices until outside stock quotes come back.
Those quotes return when U.S. markets open Monday, which will show how far Saturday’s prices strayed from where the shares actually trade.

KOSPI erases an entire year’s worth of South Korean GDP
South Korea’s stock exchange halted trading for 20 minutes yesterday as the country’s KOSPI index fell more than 8% in a single day. Since its June peak, its drawdown now exceeds 40%, worth more than $2 trillion in market capitalization.
Followed domestically the same way US investors follow the S&P 500 index, KOSPI’s rout has downranked South Korea’s AI-focused stock market from sixth to 10th among the world’s countries.
For scale, the loss tops South Korea’s entire annual economic output of about $1.9 trillion in 2025. It also exceeds the value of every BTC in existence, about $1.6 trillion.
Concerningly, KOSPI’s loss exceeds the assets of South Korea’s National Pension Service, the world’s third-largest retirement fund holding about $1.3 trillion worth of savings that have obviously shrunk alongside the stock market.

KOSPI closed yesterday at 5,554, down 7.6% on the day and extending consecutive daily losses to seven. Intraday, the index fell as much as 9.3%, enough to trigger its 10th circuit breaker of the year.
South Korean media dubbed yesterday “Black Thursday.”
With its drawdown exceeding 40%, the crisis is approaching the median decline of 43.7% recorded during the country’s previous market crises like Black Monday of 1987, Asian financial crisis of 1997, Dot-com of 2000, and Global Financial Crisis of 2008.
Taking stock of KOSPI’s Black Thursday
Incredibly, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, two AI chip companies, weight at roughly half of the KOSPI index’s market capitalization.
Due to their disproportionate underperformance in recent months, the same two companies have caused 70% of the KOSPI’s drawdown since its June peak.
July was the KOSPI’s worst month since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, but October is already nearing the entire July loss and could be on track to perform even worse.

Retail investors have amplified the wild ride with leveraged single-stock ETFs. The finance minister apologized for introducing those products.
Goldman compared this month’s sell-off to March 2020 and August 2011, the only two episodes in the last 20 years of KOSPI trading with selling this severe and no rebound day.
South Korea’s stock market entered the world’s top 10 in January by overtaking Germany at $3.25 trillion. By June, it climbed above $5 trillion to sixth place. It now ranks 10th.
The country’s Financial Services Commission chairman called an emergency meeting on Thursday. He instructed financial services firms to “maintain vigilance” and to “actively respond to ensure financial market stability and investor protection.”

Bitcoin Faces Quantum Computing Threat: 30% at Risk
Bitcoin Faces Long-Term Quantum Threat: Industry Prepares as 30% of Supply at Risk
Industry leaders are raising urgent alarms about a quantum computing threat to Bitcoin’s security, with Coinbase warning that quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography could emerge, presenting a challenge that may require a multi-year upgrade process. About 30% of Bitcoin’s supply already sits in addresses with visible public keys, according to Glassnode data, making those holdings vulnerable once a quantum threat materializes.

The Technical Risk
Bitcoin wallets are protected by digital signatures that a powerful enough quantum computer could, in theory, break. A Google study in March suggested this may take far fewer qubits than once thought, and Google’s March white paper estimated that breaking Bitcoin’s security would require roughly 1,200-1,450 logical qubits.
Timeline Uncertainty
Self-custody platform Casa co-founder and chief security officer Jameson Lopp believes it could take at least another decade before a quantum computer capable of decoding a Bitcoin public key becomes a reality. However, Google’s Willow chip, announced in December 2024, has 105 qubits, while IBM has reported 70 logical qubits and QuEra Computing has executed algorithms with up to 96 logical qubits. IBM’s hardware roadmaps show the company targeting 200 logical qubits by 2029 and 2,000 by 2033.
The Satoshi Nakamoto Problem
Satoshi Nakamoto is estimated to have mined around 1.1 million BTC in Bitcoin’s first year, with those coins never having moved, worth roughly £91.5 billion at current prices. Coinbase flagged a separate governance and engineering problem: coins that cannot or will not move, including coins in early address types, coins in reused addresses, coins with lost keys and Satoshi-era holdings.
How A Fix Would Work
Making Bitcoin quantum-resistant requires replacing the digital signatures used to authorize transactions — a challenging, complex, and multi-year process. Coinbase backs a phased fix in which the same funds could be spent with either a current key or a quantum-resistant one, pointing to BIP-360 (which already had a test network running earlier in the year) and a design called P2TRv2 as flexible options.
Institutional Preparation
Coinbase confirmed it holds about 5% of all Bitcoin in existence as a custodian, and is preparing its own systems, holding discussions with Bitcoin developers, and participating in the Bitcoin Security Consortium. The exchange emphasised that the move would be “a challenging, complex, and multi-year process”.
For UK retail traders, the key takeaway is that quantum threats to Bitcoin remain distant but are now being treated with seriousness by major institutions. Staying informed about proposed upgrades and understanding whether your holdings sit in vulnerable address types will be important as this conversation evolves.

Satoshi-era bitcoin faces a bigger quantum threat after Google’s new Willow breakthrough
The firm reported about 99.99% fidelity, a measure of how closely the finished states matched what researchers were aiming for.
That number applies only to the states that passed inspection. Willow kept about 8% of its attempts after the checks during preparation and measurement. For every 100 tries, about eight made it through.
The next steps include running the process at a much larger scale and keeping those states useful as they feed into longer calculations. The researchers say more work is needed on real-time operations and moving the states into stronger error-correcting setups.

How it fits with earlier research
In March, Google estimated that a future superconducting quantum computer with fewer than 500,000 physical qubits could break the wallet cryptography used by Bitcoin and Ethereum, under a specific set of hardware assumptions.
In September, CoinDesk reported on researchers cutting the workload of a core calculation used in that attack. That work covered one component, leaving out the complete attack and the physical hardware costs of running it.
Those studies reduce the amount of math an attacker has to do. Cultivation addresses the cost of supplying the machine while it does that math.
The gains cannot simply be multiplied together. Google’s March estimate already assumed efficient magic-state production. The experiment tests part of that engineering approach, rather than providing another 40-fold reduction in the estimated cost of attacking bitcoin.

UK Court Rules Chinese Law Controls $5B Bitcoin Fraud Claim: What It Means
The Bitcoin Seizure and the Fraudster
The Ownership Question
Thousands of investors pursued claims under Section 281 of Britain’s Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, arguing that portions of the recovered bitcoin legally belonged to them. The critical question was whether they held a proprietary interest — direct ownership — in the seized bitcoin or merely a right to compensation.
The Ruling’s Impact
The decision hands U.K. prosecutors an important legal victory, although the government hasn’t secured an outright claim to the fortune. The High Court has not determined who ultimately owns the bitcoin.
For UK cryptocurrency holders, the case highlights a key principle: the laws governing ownership of seized or disputed digital assets depend on where the transaction originated and where the assets are held. Turner emphasized that questions concerning the substance and application of Chinese law must be resolved during subsequent proceedings.

People in China are spending nearly as much of their income as Americans on healthcare
Children and adults receive vaccinations at the Jiangbei Community Health Service Center on September 15, 2026 in Huizhou, Guangdong province of China.

BEIJING — High healthcare costs are a big factor driving people in China to save, rather than spend, their money, the International Monetary Fund pointed out in a new book titled “Toward a New Economic Growth Model for China.”
In rural China, 8.7% of disposable income is spent on healthcare — just second to the U.S. among 20 major economies, the research found. The U.S. ranks the highest in the world with nearly 9.9% of disposable income spent on healthcare.
Urban China ranks third, at 5.4%, slightly more than Canada, the data showed.
The level of the healthcare burden in China grows starker when considering per capita disposable income in the U.S. was $68,289 as of the end of last year — more than 10 times more than China’s 43,377 yuan in U.S. dollar terms (around $6,400).
The gap widens further when looking at China’s countryside, which only officially emerged from extreme poverty in 2020.
Urban China recorded more than twice the disposable income as rural areas, at 56,502 yuan versus 24,456 yuan, according to official data accessed via Wind Information.
Targeted measures to raise government spending on health and social security in rural areas can significantly reduce the savings rate in rural households, the IMF said, citing prefecture-level analysis.
“China’s social spending is low compared with international peers, and increasing that spending would lift consumption,” wrote Yizhi Xu, economist in the north Asia division of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department, and Fan Zhang, the IMF’s deputy resident representative in Beijing.
They recorded a savings rate of around 14% for people from rural areas working in China’s cities, and about 6% for people with urban “hukou” residency rights, which give them more social welfare benefits than migrant workers from rural areas.
“Declining house prices in recent years continue to weigh on consumption and contribute to elevated household savings,” Xu and Zhang wrote in their section of the IMF book.
