10 Forgotten Family Movies That Can Be Called Masterpieces

Published

on

Shia LaBeouf as Stanley and Khleo Thomas as Hector looking down confused in Disney's Holes.

Family movies get underestimated all the time because people confuse gentleness with simplicity. They don’t think that a family watch can be simple yet and extremely profound in different ways for each person. No. They just go for the simplest thing so everybody can understand it. Because it’s an easy thing to get.

These 10 movies on this list, therefore, carry grief, loneliness, class pressure, spiritual healing, childhood confusion, and parent-child wounds without making the room feel heavy in a cheap way. And they are warm, strange, funny, sad, patient, and sometimes almost sacred in how carefully they understand what families give each other, what they fail to give, and what children notice before adults think they do. Let’s get started.

‘Holes’ (2003)

The magic of Holes is that it takes a ridiculous premise and slowly reveals a whole moral universe underneath it. The premise follows Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf), who is a bullied kid from a cursed family who gets sent to Camp Green Lake after being falsely accused of stealing sneakers. The place is run by adults who make boys dig holes in the desert every day, pretending it builds character while secretly searching for buried treasure.

That setup could have been a goofy punishment-camp adventure, yet the movie keeps opening doors into family history, racial injustice, friendship, and fate. Stanley’s bond with Zero (Khleo Thomas) gives the story its heart because both boys have been dismissed by systems that never bothered to understand them. The flashbacks to Kissin’ Kate Barlow (Patricia Arquette) and Sam (Dulé Hill) turn the dry lake into a place with blood and heartbreak in the soil. The onions, the peaches, the lizards, the mountain shaped like a thumb, all of it clicks together with storybook satisfaction. Few family films make destiny feel this funny and this wounded at once.

‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ (1992)

Gonzo and Rizzo in The Muppet Christmas Carol

Image via Walt Disney Pictures

It should be impossible for felt puppets to deliver one of the most emotionally sincere Charles Dickens adaptations ever made, yet here we are. The Muppet Christmas Carol stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine), with complete seriousness, and that choice lets Kermit the Frog’s Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy’s Emily (Frank Oz), Gonzo’s Charles Dickens, and Rizzo’s (Steve Whitmire) nervous commentary orbit a real performance instead of a joke machine. The silliness has a spine because Scrooge’s cruelty actually hurts the world around him.

The film has a real family-watch power and better yet, repeat-watch power and it earns that through balance. The songs are warm without turning sticky, the ghosts carry genuine unease, and the Cratchit family scenes understand how poverty changes the temperature of a room. Tiny Tim’s (Jerry Nelson) gentleness would feel manipulative in a weaker movie, but Robin the Frog (Nelson) gives him such plain sweetness that the sadness lands softly and deeply. The Muppet Christmas Carol makes Christmas feel communal, messy, and alive, while Caine gives the regret enough weight to make the redemption feel earned. It is funny, musical, strange, and somehow one of the cleanest family films about moral repair.

‘Fly Away Home’ (1996)

There is a very specific ache in watching a child grieve by caring for something smaller than herself. Amy Alden (Anna Paquin) loses her mother in a car accident and moves to Canada to live with her father Thomas (Jeff Daniels), a free-spirited inventor she barely knows anymore. Then she finds orphaned goose eggs, raises the hatchlings, and becomes the only parent those birds recognize. Suddenly, her healing is tied to getting them safely through migration.

The movie’s beauty comes from how practical the emotion is. Amy and Thomas do not fix their relationship through one perfect conversation and instead build it through work, arguments, experiments, ultralight planes, mud, weather, and the insane commitment of teaching geese how to fly south. That’s the family-watch worthy nuance. The flying scenes feel freeing. Both the actors have depth. The story earns that lift through loss. All in all, Fly Away Home is a family movie about grief learning to move again.

‘The Secret Garden’ (1993)

Kate Maberly, Heydon Prowse, and Andrew Knott walk through a garden with a goat and geese in 'The Secret Garden' (1993) Image via Warner Bros.

The Secret Garden follows Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) arriving at Misselthwaite Manor after losing her parents in India, and she brings with her the bitterness of a child who has been ignored more than loved. The huge Yorkshire house is cold, quiet, and full of rules, while her uncle Archibald Craven (John Lynch) lives in grief and his sickly son Colin (Heydon Prowse) is hidden away like another family secret. Some movies understand lonely children so well that they feel like they are speaking from inside a locked bedroom. This is that kind.

The garden changes the film because Mary changes while touching the world again. She finds the locked space, meets Dickon (Andrew Knott), pulls Colin out of fear, and slowly turns curiosity into care. The dirt, seeds, robin, old key, and spring air make the healing feel physical. Mrs. Medlock (Maggie Smith) gives the house its stiffness, but the children keep finding life underneath it. The film is gentle in the best way because it believes neglected people can bloom without pretending the neglect was small.

6

‘The Secret of Roan Inish’ (1994)

Jeni Courtney with a seal in 'The Secret of Roan Inish' (1) Image via The Samuel Goldwyn Company

This is the kind of family film that feels passed down instead of produced. The Secret of Roan Inish circles the story of Fiona (Jeni Courtney) who is sent to live with her grandparents on the Irish coast, where she hears stories about her family’s ties to selkies and the abandoned island of Roan Inish. Her baby brother Jamie is lost years earlier in a cradle carried out to sea, and the adults carry that story like grief wrapped inside folklore. Literally.

The movie moves with the patience of a remembered tale. Fiona listens, watches, wanders, and slowly begins to believe that the family’s past is still alive in the seals, the water, and the empty homes left behind. The coastline feels like a character because every rock and wave seems to hold something unsaid. What makes it special is how naturally myth and family history sit together. Jamie’s disappearance is painful, yet the film never rushes to turn wonder into explanation. It lets a child’s faith in old stories become a way for a broken family to find its way back.

5

‘A Little Princess’ (1995)

Liesel Matthews as Sara dressed in rags stands next to Eleanor Bron as Miss Minchon in A Little Princess Image via Warner Home Video

In A Little Princess, Sara Crewe (Liesel Matthews) walks into a boarding school with an imagination so bright that the building almost seems offended by her. Her father Captain Crewe (Liam Cunningham) leaves her there while he goes to war, and she tries to make life softer for the other girls through stories, kindness, and the belief that every girl deserves dignity. Then word comes that her father is dead, the money disappears, and Miss Minchin (Eleanor Bron) pushes Sara into servitude in the attic.

That is where the movie becomes more than a pretty childhood fantasy. Sara’s imagination is not escapism in the weak sense. It is resistance. She shares food, protects Becky (Vanessa Lee Chester), tells stories when the room is cold, and keeps insisting on humanity even when adults strip away comfort, status, and safety. The film has this nice golden light, Indian storybook images, snowy rooftops, and attic magic, but the film is what it is because it’s emotional. And that emotion stays grounded in Sara’s refusal to become cruel after cruelty finds her. It is a family masterpiece because it treats kindness as strength under pressure instead of mere decoration.

‘The Black Stallion’ (1979)

Teri Garr in The Black Stallion as the Mother Image via Sony Pictures Entertainment

The island section of The Black Stallion feels almost unreal, like cinema remembering what wonder looked like before words got in the way. Alec (Kelly Reno) is a boy traveling with his father when their ship catches fire and sinks, leaving him stranded on a deserted island with a wild Arabian horse. They do not become friends through cute tricks or easy sentiment. Trust grows through distance, hunger, fear, water, and the slow recognition that both of them survived the same nightmare.

Once Alec returns home, the movie shifts into a different kind of beauty. Henry Dailey (Mickey Rooney), an old horse trainer, helps him understand the animal’s speed and spirit without breaking what makes him wild. The racing material has excitement, but the island bond is what gives every later gallop its soul. The film barely explains what Alec feels because it does not need to. The images do the carrying. A boy, a horse, the sea, and a connection too pure to be reduced to dialogue.

‘Whale Rider’ (2002)

A girl with a whale in Whale Rider Image Via Newmarket Films

Whale Rider is about Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes), who is born into a Māori community where leadership is expected to pass through the male line, and her grandfather Koro (Rawiri Paratene) cannot hide his disappointment that she is a girl. That wound sits at the center of Whale Rider. Pai loves him, respects her culture, and carries the spirit of leadership everyone else keeps trying to look past. The pain is that she has to prove what should have been obvious to the person whose approval she wants most.

Castle-Hughes makes Pai feel brave without turning her into a tiny motivational symbol. She listens, watches, learns, and keeps standing near the tradition that keeps pushing her away. Koro’s lessons with the boys, the broken whale tooth, Pai’s school speech, and the beached whales all build toward a story about inheritance that expands instead of closing ranks. The film is heartbreaking because Koro’s blindness comes from love twisted by expectation. Pai’s strength, however, does not reject her people and reminds them who they were supposed to be.

Your House Has Been Chosen

After careful deliberation, the Sorting Hat has made its decision. This is the house your values, your instincts, and your particular way of being in the world were made for.

Gryffindor Tower · Scarlet & Gold

🦁 Gryffindor

You have nerve. Not the reckless kind, but the deep, quiet courage that shows up even when you’re terrified — especially then.

  • Gryffindors don’t act because they’re fearless — they act because they understand that some things are worth being afraid for.
  • You stand up for people when it would be easier to look away.
  • You charge toward what’s right even when the odds are terrible.
  • Harry, Hermione, Ron — the heroes of Hogwarts’s greatest chapter — all called the tower with the scarlet and gold home. And now, so do you.

Slytherin Dungeon · Emerald & Silver

🐍 Slytherin

You are driven, sharp, and utterly clear-eyed about what you want and how to get there.

  • Slytherin has long been misunderstood — painted as the house of villains when it is, at its best, the house of those who refuse to accept limits placed on them by others.
  • You are resourceful, strategic, and you play the long game.
  • You know your worth. You protect your own fiercely.
  • The dungeon common room with its view of the Black Lake is yours — and the ambitions that will take you further than anyone expects are yours too.

Hufflepuff Basement · Yellow & Black

🦡 Hufflepuff

You are the kind of person that makes the world genuinely better just by being in it.

  • Hufflepuff is not the “safe” house or the “leftover” house — it is the house of those with the greatest heart and the most unwavering integrity.
  • You show up. You work hard. You don’t need glory or recognition — you do what’s right because it’s right.
  • Your loyalty never wavers, even when tested.
  • Nymphadora Tonks, Cedric Diggory, Newt Scamander — some of the wizarding world’s finest. And now you join them.

Ravenclaw Tower · Blue & Bronze

🦅 Ravenclaw

Your mind is your greatest gift, and you’ve always known it.

  • Ravenclaws are the thinkers, the questioners, the ones who find a puzzle irresistible and a good book better company than most people.
  • Ravenclaw is not merely about intelligence — it’s about the love of learning, the pursuit of truth, and the rare courage to admit you don’t know something yet.
  • You see the world with unusual clarity and depth.
  • Luna Lovegood, Filius Flitwick, Rowena Ravenclaw herself — all extraordinary, all original. And so are you.

‘The Straight Story’ (1999)

Richard Farnsworth as Alvin Straight looking straight ahead in The Straight Story

Image via Walt Disney Pictures

A man riding a lawn mower across the Midwest to see his sick brother sounds almost too simple until the movie starts breathing. Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) is elderly, stubborn, and in poor health when he learns that his estranged brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) has had a stroke. Since Alvin cannot drive a car, he sets out from Iowa to Wisconsin on a small tractor, moving slowly enough that every mile feels like memory catching up to him.

The journey is quiet, but it keeps opening into little human encounters. Alvin talks with a runaway girl, cyclists, veterans, mechanics, strangers who offer help, and people who can sense that this slow trip carries more regret than he says at first. Farnsworth gives him a dignity that feels lived-in, especially when old war pain rises through his voice. David Lynch fills the road with fields, night skies, porches, and silences that feel enormous. The film belongs here because family reconciliation rarely looks dramatic in real life. Sometimes it looks like an old man crossing miles because pride finally got tired.

‘Millions’ (2004)

Alex Etel and Lewis McGibbon as brothers in Danny Boyle's Millions.

A child finding a bag of stolen money should lead to a simple wish-fulfillment story, but Millions goes somewhere much stranger and more beautiful. Damian (Alex Etel) is a gentle boy in England who talks to saints after his mother’s death, and when cash literally falls near his cardboard playhouse, he sees it as a gift from God. His older brother Anthony (Lewis Owen McGibbon) sees spending power. Their father Ronnie (James Nesbitt) sees danger once the money’s criminal origin starts closing in.

The movie is bursting with feeling because Damian’s goodness is never treated as stupidity. He wants to help the poor, ask holy people questions, and make sense of death through generosity. Anthony’s practicality brings the comedy, but his bond with Damian keeps the story from floating away. Not to mention that Danny Boyle has made the suburbs feel magical through trains, saints, Christmas lights, and the strange deadline of Britain changing currency to the euro, which gives the boys only a short window to use the cash. Under all that energy is a child trying to find his mother through kindness. That ache is why Millions deserves the top spot. It is funny, spiritual, chaotic, and quietly devastating in the exact way the best family movies can be.

Bunnie Xo Spoke Out About ‘Rough’ IVF Journey Before Split

Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo Social Media Activity Reveals New Clues About Shocking Split A Timeline

Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo were eager to expand their family through IVF before calling it quits.

“It is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through,” the “Dumb Blonde” podcast host, 46, said about her experience with in vitro fertilization (IVF) in a January interview with People, just four months before the country crooner, 41, filed for divorce after nearly 10 years of marriage.

“It’s been rough,” she added at the time. “I know that God has a plan and he’s going to make it work. I really do. I have no doubt in my mind.”

The couple met in 2015 and tied the knot in August 2016, splitting briefly in 2018 before renewing their vows in 2023.

Bunnie reflected on her past during the interview, further noting, “I genuinely think that having those abortions when I was younger, the journey that I’m going on now with IVF, God’s putting me through this again so that I can be a voice for those women who are going through this process.”

Bunnie wrote about having an abortion at 16 years old in addition to the two life-saving abortions she had to treat two ectopic pregnancies in her memoir, Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic, which was released in February.

The TikTok star elaborated about her hopes to become a mother one day, revealing that she and Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, were praying to welcome twins.

“Now that we’re finally stable financially and somewhat emotionally after all the healing we’ve done over this decade together, we’re talking about the future — including growing our family,” she penned in one chapter. “J and I have a surrogate, the sweetest woman ever, and soon I’ll be starting my IVF stims.”

IVF stims, also known as controlled ovarian stimulation, involves daily hormone injections with hopes of getting multiple mature eggs in one cycle instead of a single egg produced monthly.

Bunnie and Jelly Roll appeared to be in a good place at the time as she shared, “I’ve waited this long to have kids with someone I knew would be a great father — and to be able to make sure they have the best life.” (The “Wild Ones” hitmaker is dad to Bailee Ann, 17, and Noah Buddy, 9, from previous relationships.)

It seems their relationship has since unraveled as Jelly Roll filed for divorce on May 18, per court docs obtained by Us Weekly, which listed the former couple’s date of separation as May 9.

They split due to “irreconcileable differences” as the “parties are unable to live together successfully as Husband and Wife.” In his filing, Jelly Roll proposed that the pair have “an equitable division of the parties’ assets” post-split.

11 Perfect Fantasy TV Shows We Can’t Live Without, Ranked

Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode from A Discovery of Witches with a magical background.

Fantasy has always been a perfect avenue for imagination. Whether it’s an alternate twist on our real world or a realm defined by magic and heroic quests, nothing is impossible.

Thanks to that immersive draw, the genre also remains a lucrative one on the big screen and the small. Fantasy television, in particular, is currently enjoying a resurgence — but it’s always been a gold mine rife with impeccably satisfying tales.

‘A Discovery of Witches’ (2018–2022)

In a world where witches, vampires, and daemons secretly live among humans, Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) is a tenured professor at Oxford University and a witch who pursues science and history instead of spells. When her repressed magic subconsciously summons a long-lost manuscript from Oxford’s Bodleian Library, Diana finds herself caught in the crosshairs of deadly opportunists who covet the ancient document. Further complications arise when neither Diana nor Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), a millennia-old vampire, can deny the bond growing between them.

Bad Wolf and Sky Studios adapt historian-turned-fiction author Deborah HarknessAll Souls trilogy (now an ongoing quintet) with aplomb. A Discovery of Witches strikes every escapist note with pitch-perfect poise, and it’s often more mature than it gets credit for. Harkness applies a biological lens to her supernatural worldbuilding, and her scholarly heroine evolves from rejecting her potential to commanding her power. Add on magnificent historical costumes, hand-constructed sets, and a forbidden romance (complete with Matthew’s ravenous gazing), and we have a romantasy winner.

Ned (Lee Pace) has a unique talent beyond his superb baking skills: he can resurrect dead creatures with a single touch. Ned only uses his ability to assist local detective Emerson Cod’s (Chi McBride) investigations, but he can’t help but apply them to Chuck (Anna Friel), his murdered childhood sweetheart. The only problem? Ned’s gift comes at a price. Any subsequent skin-to-skin contact returns the revived corpses to their deceased states. As Ned and Chuck tentatively navigate a romance without physical touch, Chuck also adjusts to her second chance at life.

For two seasons, Pushing Daisies explores relationships outside of society’s conventional norms and ponders the fragility of life with gentle melancholy. The fact that its musings take the form of a whimsical, sentimental rom-com featuring episodic sleuthing, acrobatic banter, and vividly stylized production design that’s apropos for a Bryan Fuller show is icing on the proverbial cake. The ABC series’ storybook sweetness is as rich and memorable as the first bite of that legendary homemade pie your grandma made from memory and secret ingredients.

Before Disney’s seminal 1991 musical, CBS transferred the 18th-century French fairy tale into modern-day New York City. Criminals violently abduct and assault District Attorney Catherine Chandler (Linda Hamilton) after they mistake her for another woman. Vincent (Ron Perlman), a tender-hearted man whose countenance and build resemble a two-legged lion, rescues her from the brink of death and nurtures her back to health. Even though the two occupy incompatible worlds, their star-crossed yearning becomes irresistible.

Beauty and the Beast showrunner Ron Koslow nestles a time-honored romantic dynamic inside a procedural template. He retains the original novel’s crystal-clear metaphors about looking beyond superficial assumptions, although to Catherine’s credit, she needs little convincing. Her poetically soulful leading man mentors an underground community of outcasts who live in the shadows to both survive and subvert human bigotry. Season 3 takes a steep downturn, but the first two seasons are swoonworthy to a fault; Vincent and Catherine’s self-sacrificial compassion and mutual empathy secure their soulmate status to the point they develop a psychic connection.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power could’ve easily been a hollow attempt to mine nostalgia for one of filmmaking’s singular achievements. With the blessing of J. R. R. Tolkien‘s estate and showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay‘s palpable reverence for the material, The Rings of Power‘s greatest heights rival Peter Jackson‘s The Lord of the Rings movies. Lore diversions aside, Payne and McKay fundamentally understand Tolkien’s message about human failings and bittersweet hope, and they strive to do justice to his 89-year legacy.

Like their character-driven story choices, the duo wields Prime Video’s enormous budget with exacting intention. Cinematic visuals and exquisitely detailed costumes furnish Middle-earth with the immersive, ethereal ambience it deserves. A tapestry of remarkable actors erases any lingering doubts, whether it’s the ferocious rage of Morfydd Clark‘s Galadriel, Charles Edwards‘ effortless gravitas as the tormented Celebrimbor, or Charlie Vickers‘ slithery, malicious Sauron. Every indication points toward The Rings of Power refining its minor imperfections and flourishing into a modern masterpiece.

Gollum

You carry something heavy — and you carry it alone, even when you don’t have to. You were not born for greatness, and that is precisely why greatness chose you. Your courage is not the roaring, sword-swinging kind; it is quiet, stubborn, and terrifying in its refusal to quit. The Ring weighs on you more than anyone can see, and still you walk toward the fire. That is not weakness. That is the rarest kind of strength there is.

You are, without question, the best of them. Not the most powerful, not the most celebrated — but the most essential. Your loyalty is not a trait; it is a force of nature. You would carry the person you love up the slopes of Mount Doom if it came to that, and we both know you’d do it without being asked. The world needs more people like you, and the world is lucky it has even one.

You were born to lead, and you have spent years running from it. The crown is yours by right, but you know better than anyone that right means nothing without the will and the worthiness to back it up. You are tempered by loss, shaped by long roads, and defined by a code of honour you hold to even when no one is watching. When you finally step forward, the world shifts. Because it was always waiting for you.

You have seen more than you let on, and you say less than you know — which is exactly as it should be. You are a catalyst: you do not fight the battles yourself, you ignite the people who can. Your wisdom comes not from books but from an age of watching what happens when it is ignored. You arrive precisely when you mean to, and your presence alone changes what is possible. A wizard is never late.

Graceful, perceptive, and almost preternaturally calm under pressure — you see things others miss and act before others react. You do not need to make a scene to be remarkable; your presence speaks for itself. You are loyal to those you choose to stand beside, and that choice is not made lightly. You have lived long enough to know that the most beautiful things in this world are also the most fragile, and that is why you fight to protect them.

You are loud, proud, and absolutely formidable — and beneath all of that is one of the most fiercely loyal hearts in Middle-earth. You don’t do anything by half measures. Your friendships are forged like iron, your grudges run as deep as mines, and your courage in battle is the kind that makes legends. You came into this fellowship suspicious of everyone and ended it willing to die for an elf. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

You think in centuries and act in absolutes. Order, dominion, control — not because you are cruel by nature, but because you have decided that the world left to itself always falls apart, and you are the only one with the vision and the will to hold it together. You were not always this. Something was lost, or taken, or betrayed, and the version of you that stands now is the answer to that wound. The tragedy is that you’re not entirely wrong — just entirely too far gone to course-correct.

You are a study in contradiction — pitiable and dangerous, cunning and broken, capable of both cruelty and something that once resembled love. You are defined by loss: of innocence, of self, of the one thing that gave your existence meaning. Two voices war inside you constantly, and the tragedy is that the better one sometimes wins, just not often enough, and never at the right moment. You are a warning, yes — but also a mirror. We are all a little Gollum, given the right ring and enough time.

After 12 years and eight captivating seasons, the curtain has closed on the television version of author Diana Gabaldon‘s time-traveling World War II nurse Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) and her 18th-century Scottish husband, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Saying goodbye is bittersweet whether audiences watched from Outlander‘s auspicious beginning or dived in because of the saga’s perpetual fanfare. And from their prickly first meeting to their closing breaths as they lay upon that stone, Claire and Jamie persisted as they always have: two survivors brought together by fate who defy history’s every attempt to separate them.

Despite being surrounded by rampant violence and misery, the Frasers’ cosmic connection elevates Outlander into its own brand of comfort show. Starz’s sheer production value, paired with the early seasons’ assured vision as a romance for the ages, seduces those already inclined to enjoy the show’s prestige soap opera style. Meanwhile, Outlander‘s period drama, grit, and political intrigue win over more dubious viewers. A love story first, foremost, and always, Season 8’s satisfying ending means fans can rewatch again and again with contentment.

‘Over the Garden Wall’ (2014)

Adolescent Wirt (Elijah Wood) and his precocious younger brother Greg (Collin Dean) wander through the Unknown, an off-kilter world filled with warm-toned woodland foliage, eccentric inhabitants, and magic both splendor and sinister. Unsure how or why they arrived, they’re searching for the path home. Beatrice the talking bluebird (Melanie Lynskey) and the enigmatic Woodsman (Christopher Lloyd) take pity on the brothers by helping them evade the Beast (Samuel Ramey), a demonic entity that feeds upon despair.

A mythic feeling permeates Patrick McHale‘s Emmy-winning miniseries. Over the Garden Wall layers New England iconography, absurdist satire, mythological references, and contemporary jokes over its cozy coming-of-age adventure-meets-macabre eldritch horror environment. The character designs and autumnal color schemes simultaneously evoke older Saturday morning cartoons and the illustrative fine art bound inside elaborate fairy tale collections. Nothing less than a tonal, atmospheric, and narrative masterclass, there’s still no genuine equivalent to Over the Garden Wall when it comes to modern classics, animated or otherwise.

Based on one of the most acclaimed manga phenomenons to date, this vehemently faithful adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa‘s Fullmetal Alchemist is a towering feat on its own merit. In Amestris, alchemy has been integrated into daily life for the citizens capable of channeling the method’s potent effects. Brothers and state-sanctioned alchemists Edward (Romi Park) and Alphonse Elric (Rie Kugimiya) seek out the fabled philosopher’s stone, hoping to reunite Alphonse’s soul with his human body. The siblings must also survive their country’s dangerous trappings and an array of deadly enemies.

Arakawa models her steampunk-adjacent universe after Europe’s Industrial Revolution, from the mechanical industries to the sociopolitical hierarchy. Yet neither the Fullmetal Alchemist manga nor Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood would soar as high if they didn’t root themselves in the heroes, antiheroes, and villains’ complex psychological range. Arakawa deftly and scathingly weighs the disastrous consequences of arrogance or desperation, a tyrannical militarized government, genocide, and revenge vendettas against guilt, atonement, and the clarity provided by communal love. Warmth and idiosyncratic comedy offset Brotherhood‘s devastating weight; together, they guarantee a hall-of-fame fantasy anime.

A sublime plot twist is literally just the beginning for The Good Place. Fearless and self-effacing, Michael Schur‘s sitcom always lives up to its premise’s parameters, no matter how many times Michael (Ted Danson), the demon architect with a heart of gold, resets his hellish experiment for his four human test subjects. Schur’s razor-sharp wit and consistent empathy turn philosophical theories into ethical dilemmas anyone can digest, as well as essential debates for every person’s growth.

Ultimately, The Good Place is about choosing compassion and personal accountability precisely because meaningful, lasting improvement requires us to embrace uncertainty and routine failure. Pushing against the systemic cruelties designed to deplete our spirits isn’t enough if we don’t contribute resistance through painstaking, individual hard work. The answer is obvious, not glamorous. Yet the life-affirming sincerity with which The Good Place handles flawed people floundering their way toward existential crisis and self-actualization elevates the series into cathartic resonance.

Kim Shin (Gong Yoo), a military warrior from Korea’s Goryeo Dynasty, returns home after winning another battle in his king’s name, only for his ruler to slaughter his entire household. Before his spirit can reach the afterlife, God sentences Kim to immortality as punishment for his violence. Only his prophesied bride can end his eternal existence. Now a dokkaebi (goblin), Kim spends the next nine centuries in self-reflection, providing for humans, grieving their deaths, and longing for his own. Finally, the Goblin’s Bride arrives in the form of Ji Eun-tak (Kim Go-eun), a modern-day student whose survival defies death’s laws. And with her effusive influence brightening his life, for the first time in 900 years, Shin wants to live.

A record-breaking cultural sensation hailing from writer Kim Eun-sook (Netflix’s The Glory), Guardian: The Lonely and Great God might as well be considered a minor miracle. The entire behind-the-camera team employs the defining K-Drama tropes with enough technical efficiency that viewers are bound to feel spoiled by the engrossing grandeur. Sure, Guardian is melodramatic to the core, but that’s crucial to the K-Drama appeal. The committed performers pour everything into selling the gut-wrenching twists, the bittersweet dual romances, and the kooky odd-couple friendships. Weeping is a small price to pay for an experience this intimate and visceral.

Welcome to Piltover, where technological progress, magic, political tension, and familial strife intertwine. This luxurious utopia belongs solely to the aristocratic elite. Their entitled comfort and unchecked experiments occur at the expense of their undercity’s well-being; relentless oppression, socioeconomic inequality, and opportunistic criminals have all but ruined Zaun. When Zaun’s burgeoning uprising gains strength, Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), two orphaned sisters separated by tragedy, stand on opposing sides.

Few predicted a revelatory artistic landmark would emerge from a League of Legends prequel series. Arcane stands as a one-in-a-million triumph on almost every level. French studio Fortiche’s transcendent animation is painterly and textured, flowing with musicality and jaw-dropping experimentation. It’s an efficient storytelling machine, as propulsive or meditative as the character-first pathos requires. Crushing abandonment, resentment, ambition, a warped sense of justice, and lost innocence drive said ensemble’s choices, backed by a monumental voice cast well-equipped for tragedy. The sisters fight to draw blood, and Arcane does the same.

One of the Greatest Comedy Series of All Time Is Waiting To Be Rediscovered on Netflix

Published

on

shrill-slice

Even though the television world has become more diverse over the past couple of decades, the types of stories told tend to come from traditional voices. This is even more true for comedies. With female protagonists, the stories are typically from the perspective of classically beautiful, thin women (a la Friends, Sex and the City, New Girl, etc.). We’ve only just seen more realistic bodies depicted on TV, thanks to series like Survival of the Thickest and Somebody Somewhere. If you’re looking for one more underrated show in this category, Netflix has just added a fantastic three-season comedy that deserves to be rediscovered.

What Is ‘Shrill’ About?

Shrill, which originally premiered on Hulu in 2019, is adapted from Lindy West’s 2016 memoir, Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, and transformed into a fictionalized account of West’s life as a plus-size writer. The series follows Annie Easton (Aidy Bryant), who is merely trying to exist in a world designed for thin people.

‘Shrill’ Review: Aidy Bryant’s Sharp Hulu Series Hits Home

This is the show ‘Girls’ should have been.

In the premiere, Annie experiences multiple humiliating events. She angles for a promotion from a calendar editor to a journalist at the newspaper where she works, but is shot down by her harsh boss, Gabe (played by John Cameron Mitchell, who is perfectly cast in this droll role). She sleeps with her friend-with-benefits, Ryan (Luka Jones), and is embarrassingly asked to leave through the back door so that his roommates won’t see her. Then, to top it all off, she finds out that the morning-after pill isn’t effective for her because she weighs over 175 pounds.

One of the only bright lights in Annie’s life is her bestie, Fran (Lolly Adefope), who supports her exactly as she is and goes with her to terminate her pregnancy. In subsequent episodes, Annie starts to learn to love herself from the inside out, and her journey becomes even more about finding her voice in a world that doesn’t always allow her to speak.

‘Shrill’ Is a Brutally Honest, Wryly Funny Comedy

Shrill’s storytelling is so effective because it’s always authentic. Annie’s life is incredibly messy and super realistic. Her relationships are complicated, and she has to fight like hell for every ounce of respect she gets from the people around her. The writing team, which includes Bryant and West, works to create a character who feels far from perfect, but is also someone you can’t help but root for. The best part of the show is the way that Annie learns to look for joy in her life — whether it’s sticking up for herself at work, dealing with a horrible internet troll, or attending a pool party for plus-size women that allows her to feel truly comfortable in her skin for perhaps the first time. It’s not that Annie doesn’t make cringe-worthy mistakes, especially when her insecurity takes over. But as the series progresses, Annie becomes a true heroine who doesn’t conform to the societal standards that hold us all back.

There is no way that Shrill would have worked without such a stellar cast. Bryant, who landed an Emmy nomination in 2021 for her work, is absolutely breathtaking in this role. Annie may be depressed, feisty, joyful, and honest all at once, but she’s never a caricature. Instead, Bryant plays her with a refreshing three-dimensional brilliance that proves that her incredible work on Saturday Night Live was no fluke — and that she deserves another leading role pronto.

The supporting cast is every bit as essential to Shrill as Bryant. Adefope, who has proven her range by also starring in the UK version of Ghosts, is effervescent and dazzling as Fran. Comedy legends Julia Sweeney and Daniel Stern offer perfect timing in every scene they pop up in as Annie’s parents, while her co-workers, played impeccably by Jo Firestone, Patti Harrison, and Ian Owens, create a magically funny setting for some of Annie’s biggest hurdles.

Shrill aired its final season in 2021, which was especially tragic considering there was so much more of Annie’s journey that could have been explored. What’s even more disappointing is that so many people somehow missed seeing the series when it first aired. Luckily, it’s found a new streaming home on Netflix, where, hopefully, even more viewers will check out this gem of a show.

Jeremy Allen White Reflects On ‘Shameless’ Milestone

Published

on

Jeremy Allen White at 2025 Disney Upfront

Showtime’s hit drama series “Shameless” premiered in 2011, featuring a then-much-less-famous Jeremy Allen White. Now, over 15 years later, the “Bear” actor is reflecting on the show’s legacy and dishing on which of his former co-stars he keeps in touch with. However, fans notice one giant omission from his list, leading many to take it as confirmation of strife with Emmy Rossum.

The world premiere for the fifth and final season of “The Bear” took place in New York City on June 15. While on the red carpet, White spoke to ExtraTV, with the reporter pointing out that it had been 15 years since the iconic Showtime series premiered.

He responded, “Really? No, I did not put that together. That’s incredible.” After that, he reflected on the show and its cast, saying, “That was my first kind of found family that moved me to Los Angeles.” From there, he recalled “hot days at Warner Bros., hot days in Chicago. It was the best.”

White continued his short conversation with ExtraTV, discussing his dynamic with the cast. He stated, “I love all those guys, too.” After that, the “Bear” star was asked if he remains in contact with his former “Shameless” costars.

According to him, “Yeah, I just saw Shanola [Hampton] the other day. I talked to Steve [Howey] the other day, Ethan [Cutkosky], and Emma [Kenney]. Cam [Monaghan] is great. He’s doing a show right now in LA.” The 35-year-old added, “Yeah, they’re the best.”

Fans Noticed He Didn’t Name Emmy Rossum

“Shameless” featured a large ensemble cast, so it would be unreasonable to expect White to say he’s remained in touch with all his former costars. However, many were surprised that he didn’t mention Rossum’s name, given the amount of screentime they shared.

One person wrote on social media, “No mention of Emmy.” Another “Shameless” fan said, “I’m happy he didn’t mention Emmy.” Someone else stated, “He didn’t mention Emmy.”

Regarding the show itself, one social media user chimed in, “I’m rewatching again. I wish I were part of that family, wish we could have them back again.” A different fan said, “I’ve been meaning to restart it. It’s been 5 years since I watched all the seasons, so it’s definitely time to rewatch. One of the best shows ever made!”

Lastly, someone else mentioned the omission, stating, “Clearly you don’t speak to Emmy.”

Emmy Rossum Left ‘Shameless’ Before It Ended

According to Entertainment Weekly, Rossum announced her exit from “Shameless” in 2018 after 9 seasons on the show. Her departure came after multiple reports that she was not the kindest to other actors on set, especially extras.

Following Rossum’s exit, another costar, Kenney, opened up about her experience working with the actress. She said on “Call Her Daddy” in 2021, “We were both so young, I was obviously a lot younger. There were times where she would try to be a good influence, and then there were times where she would be blatantly giving me…not the best advice.”

She added, “Maybe she was struggling with her own inner problems and taking it out on other people. But we all handle situations differently.”

White also reflected on Rossum leaving the show. He told Variety, “It’s very sad. I mean, nine years we’ve all grown up together. It’s gonna be hard.” The “Bear” star continued discussing her exit, revealing he had no hard feelings toward the actress.

According to him, “I can’t fault Emmy. I think she’s ready to leave. They’ll never be able to find actors that can fill her shoes, so we’ll just have to keep trying.”

‘The Bear’ Season 5 Premieres In June 2026

Season 5 of “The Bear” will premiere on June 25, with all episodes releasing at once on Hulu. Regarding FX, two episodes will debut with new offerings arriving weekly until the finale. The final season will consist of eight episodes.

White spoke to PEOPLE about the final episode. He said, “It was hard. I mean, it was hard to read. It was hard to shoot. It all makes sense.”

He continued, “To me, this season, the end of the show is like — for Carmy [Carmen Berzatto] at least — is about this sort of like ultimate surrender and acceptance of, kind of like an honesty with himself. So that all makes sense to me.”

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

It’s been about three and a half months since Jelly Roll lovingly thanked his wife, Bunnie XO, for helping change his life. His Grammys speech had supporters living for the moment and their relationship. That “true love” vision was shattered this week when news surfaced that Jelly Roll recently filed for divorce. Hours after the divorce update hit social media, so did Bunnie XO with new posts about getting her sparkle back!

Details About Country Singer’s Divorce

TMZ was first to report news of Jelly Roll’s divorce, alleging that he filed the paperwork on May 18 in Williamson County, Tennessee. He reportedly listed their separation date as May 9 and cited irreconcilable differences. Sources allegedly told TMZ that the decision was mutual and “a private family matter.” The estranged couple met in 2015 at one of his Las Vegas concerts and a year later, he proposed onstage at another Las Vegas concert, per PEOPLE. That same night, they secretly eloped at a courthouse chapel and have been together for 10 years.

Bunnie XO Shares THESE Posts Amid Divorce Announcement

Following news of Jelly Roll’s divorce hitting the internet, so did Bunnie XO! She slid on Instagram to share a selfie video, singing Nickelback’s song, ‘How You Remind Me.’ She captioned the post, ‘Banger.’ The comment section under that post is flooded with questions about the divorce, supporters offering her advice and compassion and excitement for her “single baddie” era.

Meanwhile, on Instagram Stories, she posted a photo of herself wearing a satin-like, pink lingerie bra and panty set while kneeling on a couch. One strap is hanging off her shoulder, as she holds her breast in one hand and touches her shoulder with the other. She captioned the photo, “She’s getting her sparkle back.”

What Did Jelly Roll Say About His Wife At The Grammys?

Jelly Roll’s divorce filing shocked supporters late Monday (June 15). For one, the now-estranged couple celebrated their 10-year anniversary earlier this year. And two? The country singer had eyes watering at the 2026 Grammy Awards when he dedicated part of his winning speech to Bunnie XO and God.

“First of all, Jesus, I hear you, and I’m listening. Lord, I am listening. Lord. Second of all, I want to thank my beautiful wife. I would have never changed my life without you. I would’ve ended up dead or in jail. I would’ve killed myself if it wasn’t for you and Jesus,” Jelly Roll said.

On days when he struggled with darkness, Jelly said that he found healing in faith, music and his wife’s support. Bunnie XO was seen in the audience, visibly emotional at her husband’s vulnerability and praise.

Whirlwind walk down the aisle and his loving GRAMMYs tribute aside. Jelly Roll and Bunnie XO’s relationship hasn’t always been glittering gold. In 2018, he reportedly admitted to being unfaithful, which led to a brief separation, counseling and eventual reconciliation. Between 2020-2024, the couple went on to openly discuss their marriage in the media, where he frequently described her as his “backbone.” Amid that, in 2023, they renewed their vows in the Las Vegas chapel they eloped in. In her memoir published in February of this year, Bunnie XO even revealed that they had been preparing to expand their family with twins. Apparently, the couple had secured “the sweetest woman ever” to be their surrogate as they underwent IVF. It’s unclear how far along they got in that journey.

DJ Fat Tony Defends Addressing Brooklyn Beckham’s Family Feud

Published

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz arriving at their hotel during Paris Fashion Week

DJ Fat Tony is clearing the air on why he spoke about the ongoing feud between Victoria and David Beckham and their son, Brooklyn Beckham

Tony previously shared his thoughts about the whole situation. He noted that Marc Anthony was largely to blame because he had initiated the dance between Victoria and Brooklyn, which the eldest Beckham son felt was “inappropriate.”

This comes after Brooklyn published explosive claims about his parents, accusing his mother of attempting to steal the spotlight at his wedding and publicly distancing himself from them.

After Brooklyn denounced his family and accused his mother of hijacking his first dance during his wedding to Nicola Peltz, Tony spoke up about the situation. However, he recently revealed that he only said something at the time because he was asked to do so.

“Yeah, I was [asked to speak]… There’s a WhatsApp group [with Brooklyn and Nicola],” he said, per Daily Mail. Tony further revealed that it was not his intention to throw anyone under the bus. Instead, he “just spoke from the heart.”

The DJ explicitly stated that when he spoke up, he wasn’t trying to spill the beans on the family conflict. Instead, he spoke as honestly as possible in an attempt to shed light on the situation.

Tony, who has close ties with the Beckham family, got emotional, insisting that it is still his wish to see the Beckhams get a happy ending. He still maintains hope that, despite the large fallout, there might be a possible reconciliation in the future.

He further noted that it was “sad” to see that some people got so swept up in the drama that they forgot that “some kid’s hurting and a family’s lost their son.”

What DJ Tony Said About The Incident At Brooklyn Beckham’s Wedding

Tony’s statements came as a clarification to what he said earlier in the year, when he shed light on why the famous family was feuding. At the time, The Blast reported that Tony described the situation as “really awkward.”

The 60-year-old DJ noted that Anthony had been performing at the wedding when he called Brooklyn to join him on stage.

After that, he asked “the most beautiful woman in the room” to come forward, urging Victoria to join Brooklyn, not Peltz. This supposedly came as a shock to guests who expected Peltz to join Brooklyn on the stage.

According to Tony, the situation left the eldest Beckham son looking “devastated,” while Peltz left the room bawling in tears. He noted that Brooklyn felt it was awkward and “inappropriate,” regardless of how other people felt about the situation.

Following the uncomfortable situation at his wedding, Brooklyn publicly denounced his parents, cutting ties with anything that has to do with them.

The photographer accused his parents of undermining his marriage and attempting to manipulate the public’s opinion about the Beckham family. A source later revealed that he “has no regrets about speaking out publicly against his parents,” per The Blast.

The insider also revealed that Peltz supports her husband’s decision, adding that Brooklyn feels at peace with how everything played out.

As the family feud rages on, many expected that there would be a reconciliation sooner rather than later; however, the opposite seems to be the case.

According to The Blast, a source revealed that the entire Beckham family is distraught over the deep divide between Brooklyn and his parents.

The insider noted that although everyone is trying to get on with their lives, it’s still “terribly sad” that David and Victoria have not been able to make peace with their son.

The source further revealed that if Brooklyn ever decides to step back into the lives of his parents, the iconic couple “will be there to talk.”

Despite hopes of a reconciliation, the feud appears to still be on, with Brooklyn missing key family events.

A few days ago, David was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As the first soccer player to be recognized with this honor, his family members were present to support him, except Brooklyn, per The Blast

Despite his son’s absence, David was overwhelmed with joy. When he received the honor, he admitted that it felt “surreal” and expressed gratitude for being recognized in the presence of many other great personalities.

How Summer House Scandal Reunited Lindsay Hubbard, Carl Radke

Published

on

Carl Radke Says Lindsay Hubbard Pregnancy Was Closure He Needed

Nearly three years after ending their engagement, Lindsay Hubbard and Carl Radke can consider themselves friends again — thanks, in part, to Amanda Batula, West Wilson and Ciara Miller’s love triangle-turned-scandal that rocked the Summer House cast this spring.

“At the same time, I think, we had to go on the journey that we did, I also think that this scandal within our cast, without having a full conversation between you, me and Kyle [Cooke], we almost instinctively banded together to protect our house,” Lindsay, 39, said during her appearance on the Tuesday, June 16, episode of Carl’s “More Life” podcast.

Lindsay added that she and Carl, 41, teamed up with Kyle, 43, to ensure that “no one’s gonna burn our house down except for us.” (Lindsay has been a vocal critic of Amanda’s relationship with West, 31, ever since the pair confirmed their romance in March, as West previously dated Amanda’s best friend Ciara, 30, in 2023. Amanda, 34, and West began dating shortly after the former announced her separation from husband Kyle.)

Lindsay continued, “I think that was, like, a big part [of her newfound friendship with Carl] and [the pair’s Uber Eats commercial in April], the talking more, and you, me and Kyle just playing Red Rover with the world of, like, this is our f***ing house, and you’re not gonna burn it down.”

Lindsay and Carl began dating in January 2022 and got engaged that August. However, Carl later called off their impending nuptials in August 2023, three months before the wedding was scheduled to take place.

Though the exes were estranged for years after their split, they reunited in April for the iconic “Carl’s a Mess” campaign for Uber Eats, inspired by Kyle’s viral quote about how Carl was handling the Amanda and West drama. The ad saw Lindsy consoling a sobbing Carl with an Uber Eats delivery containing snacks and tissues.

“Doing Uber Eats, it brought a lot a of joy to me because I do think we have great chemistry on film like that or on camera,” Carl said on Tuesday, although he admitted that he was nervous about reuniting with Lindsay for the project. “And it brought me back to like how much fun that was. But it just made me happy because I felt like there was a really good bond in some of those moments. It brought me back.”

Elsewhere on the podcast, the pair marked their reconciliation by re-following each other on Instagram. (Lindsay previously had Carl blocked on the social media platform.)

“We’re back, baby!” Carl shouted, with Lindsay agreeing, “We’re so back.”

Following their split, Lindsay moved on with her now-ex Turner Kufe, with whom she shares daughter Gemma, 18 months. Lindsay and Turner split in early 2025, shortly after they welcomed their baby girl. Both Carl and Lindsay are currently single.

“The relationship we have now, and the friendship we have now, it’s been really nice,” Carl said on Tuesday. “And I think, even just watching back season 10, and obviously, it’s very interesting watching back over the last two months. But the bright spot for me this past summer is watching us in some of the dynamic. And I know people enjoy watching it too.”

Lindsay added, “Almost three years later, but we made it. I would say, like, I think you and I have done a really good job at coexisting and continuing to film and be in a house, living together.”

More On Latto’s Latest Cover

In her cover story with Essence Magazine, Latto discussed motherhood and postpartum, revealing that she’s just “taking it day by day.”

“Some days are better than others, but overall I’m doing well. She gave me more drive if anything. And I have so much help — her dad, her grandmas, we have a whole village. I wouldn’t say it’s postpartum depression, but postpartum itself is definitely a day by day thing,” she explained.

As for who gave her the best advice to prepare for motherhood, Latto credited Sexyy Red.

“She was saying my life is about to change in the best way possible. ‘It’s scary — the change is so big that it is scary — but you got this.’ She said keep your head up through postpartum because it wasn’t easy for her and she hoped it would be better for me. And she said, ‘Your baby is going to make you go way harder. Watch,’” Latto recalled.
