10 Greatest Romance Books of the 20th Century

Published

on

The Thorn Birds book0

Romance has existed in literature for centuries, and in mythology for millennia before that, but the twentieth century produced some of the genre’s most enduring masterpieces. The greatest romance books serve up dramatic plots while also exploring deeper themes, like identity, sacrifice, obsession, and loss.

With that in mind, this list attempts to rank some of the finest of them, from intimate character studies to epic historical sagas. Whether tragic, hopeful, or bittersweet, these novels demonstrate love’s power to shape (and upend) entire lives.

‘The Thorn Birds’ (1977)

The Thorn Birds book0

“There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life.” The Thorn Birds is a sweeping family saga that spans decades and multiple generations, following the Cleary family as they build a life in the harsh Australian outback. However, the heart of the novel is the relationship between Meggie Cleary and Father Ralph de Bricassart. Their connection is profound and passionate but seemingly impossible, constrained by Ralph’s ambition within the Catholic Church and the demands of faith.

In other words, theirs is a doomed love, one shaped by sacrifice, missed opportunities, and painful choices, and the book is honest about the challenges they face. Unlike most romances, which tend to be optimistic to the point of fantasy, The Thorn Birds is realistic. It acknowledges that love alone cannot always overcome circumstance. Nevertheless, the story resonated, turning the novel into a huge bestseller.

‘Outlander’ (1991)

Outlander book0

“For where all love is, the speaking is unnecessary.” Diana Gabaldon‘s magnum opus blends historical fiction with fantasy, adventure, and intense romance. In it, former World War II nurse Claire Randall is mysteriously transported from 1945 to eighteenth-century Scotland. Stranded in a dangerous and unfamiliar world, she becomes involved with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. This juicy premise sets the stage for an epic tale of love, war, and political intrigue.

The setting is rich and well-researched, really immersing the reader in the historical details. Claire and Jamie must navigate real issues of the time, like clan rivalries and the looming Jacobite conflicts. That said, the book’s strongest feature is probably the characterization. Claire is an unusually independent and capable person, especially by the standards of the genre. Jamie, meanwhile, is noble and charismatic without feeling idealized.

‘Rebecca’ (1938)

Rebecca - 1938 - book cover Image via Virago

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” Most people will be more familiar with Hitchcock‘s movie version, but the original Rebecca novel is a masterpiece in its own right. It follows a young unnamed woman who marries the wealthy widower Maxim de Winter and moves to his estate, Manderley. There, she finds herself living in the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the seemingly perfect Rebecca. What follows is a romance suffused with Gothic mystery and psychological tension.

The atmosphere is unforgettable. Manderley feels almost alive, filled with memories, secrets, and lingering traces of Rebecca’s presence. A sense of dread hangs over it all. The romance is therefore not simply about falling in love, but about insecurity, jealousy, identity, and the difficulty of truly knowing another person. As the protagonist gradually uncovers the truth about Rebecca, both she and the reader are forced to reassess everything they thought they knew about what devotion really means.

7

‘The English Patient’ (1992)

The English patient book cover Image via McClelland and Stuart

“We die containing a richness of lovers and tribes.” Set during the final days of World War II, The English Patient follows several characters living in a ruined Italian villa, including a badly burned man known only as the English patient. As his memories gradually emerge, readers learn the story of his passionate affair with the married Katharine Clifton… and the tragedy that followed. Their relationship has all the hallmarks of a classic romance: longing, secrecy, intensity.

However, the novel stands above most stories in this genre thanks to the author’s brilliant prose. Michael Ondaatje’s writing is poetic, filled with evocative imagery and beautifully observed details. The desert landscapes and bombed-out villas are rendered with such richness that they become inseparable from the characters’ emotional lives. The result is a book that feels almost dreamlike and immersive, rewarding careful reading.

6

‘Doctor Zhivago’ (1957)

Doctor Zhivago book0

“Man is born to live, not to prepare for life.” This one served as the basis for David Lean‘s legendary epic. Doctor Zhivago tells the story of Yuri Zhivago, a physician and poet whose life is transformed by the Russian Revolution and Civil War. Amid political upheaval and social chaos, Yuri falls deeply in love with Lara, a woman whose fate repeatedly intersects. The book is an interesting fusion of historical scope and personal focus, serving as a snapshot of a whole country while also going deep into the psychology of the protagonists.

Doctor Zhivago is also deeply philosophical. Writer Boris Pasternak uses the characters to explore themes of freedom, morality, creativity, and individual identity. Many of these reflections come from Yuri himself, who makes for a deeply perceptive main character. Ultimately, the book earned its author the Nobel Prize for Literature, much to the Soviet Union’s chagrin.

5

‘A Farewell to Arms’ (1929)

A Farewell to Arms book0

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.” This Hemingway classic centers on Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver serving in the Italian Army during World War I. Amid the chaos and brutality, he falls in love with Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. Their relationship becomes a refuge from the destruction surrounding them, and the author’s stripped-down approach ensures that it feels intimate and honest.

Hemingway’s famously spare, understated writing conveys enormous emotional depth without sentimentality. Rather than relying on melodrama, he allows simple conversations and quiet moments to carry weight. The lovers are constantly confronted by forces beyond their control, giving everything a sense of impermanence and vulnerability. Through this, A Farewell to Arms explores timeless ideas: love as a sanctuary, the inevitability of loss, and the struggle to find meaning in an indifferent world.

4

‘Gone with the Wind’ (1936)

Gone With the Wind book0

“After all, tomorrow is another day.” Yet another classic that was turned into an equally impressive movie. Gone with the Wind introduces one of literature’s most vivid heroines in the determined, ambitious, and sometimes selfish Scarlett O’Hara, who struggles to survive the American Civil War and its aftermath. Once again, the sweep of the story is epic, but the centre of gravity is the protagonist’s complicated relationship with Rhett Butler.

Their romance is compelling precisely because it’s so combustible. Scarlett and Rhett are passionate, stubborn, proud, and deeply flawed individuals whose desires and ambitions frequently place them at odds with one another. Their relationship unfolds over many years, filled with misunderstandings and missed opportunities, mirroring the social turbulence around them. In the end, while aspects of the book are controversial today, its influence on romantic fiction is undeniable.

3

‘The End of the Affair’ (1951)

The End of the Affair book0

“A story has no beginning or end.” This one was written by the influential British journalist and novelist Graham Greene, and it ranks among his very best work. The End of the Affair begins after the collapse of a passionate affair between writer Maurice Bendrix and Sarah Miles, the wife of a British civil servant. Unable to move on, Maurice becomes obsessed with understanding why Sarah ended their relationship. His search for answers uncovers secrets involving faith, sacrifice, jealousy, and love.

While the plot itself seems simple, Greene handles it with unusual psychological depth. Maurice is a compelling narrator because he’s so three-dimensional, simultaneously intelligent, witty, bitter, and painfully self-aware. His jealousy drives much of the story, and, through him, Greene fearlessly examines the darker aspects of romance, including possessiveness, resentment, and despair. Here, love can be inspiring or endlessly destructive.

‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ (1985)

“It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.” One of Gabriel García Márquez‘s masterworks, Love in the Time of Cholera tells the extraordinary story of Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza, whose youthful romance is interrupted when Fermina chooses to marry another man. Refusing to abandon his feelings, Florentino spends more than fifty years waiting for another chance to be with the woman he loves.

Márquez spins this setup into a moving slice of magical realism, buoyed along by his rich prose. The emotions are heightened, and there’s a kind of grandeur to even the everyday moments. It makes for a beautiful examination of love’s contradictions. All this culminates in a brilliant final chapter, ranking among the very best in all of fiction.

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” The Great Gatsby is like a talisman of the 1920s, preserving that decade in amber, while also serving up one of the most influential love stories ever. Narrated by Nick Carraway, the novel centers on the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his obsessive devotion to Daisy Buchanan, a woman he has loved for years despite her marriage to another man. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Gatsby’s pursuit of Daisy to comment on idealism, longing, memory, and the American Dream.

Gatsby’s romance is not simply about winning back a lost love. It becomes a symbol of his desire to recapture an imagined past and achieve an impossible ideal. This makes his devotion admirable in some respects and deeply tragic, even repulsive in others. Here, romance gets entangled with wealth, status, nostalgia, and illusion. A classic.

The Academy Has Decided
Your Perfect Film Is…

Your answers have pointed to one Oscar Best Picture winner above all others. This is the film that was made for the way your mind works.

Parasite

You are drawn to films that operate on multiple levels simultaneously — that begin in one genre and quietly, brilliantly migrate into another. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is a film about class, desire, and the architecture of inequality that manages to be darkly funny, deeply suspenseful, and genuinely shocking across a single extraordinary running time. Your instinct is for cinema that hides its true intentions until the moment it’s ready to reveal them. Parasite is exactly that — a film that rewards close attention and punishes assumptions, right up to its devastating final image.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

You want it all — and this film gives you all of it. The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once is one of the most maximalist films ever made: action comedy, multiverse sci-fi, family drama, existential crisis, and a genuinely earned emotional core that sneaks up on you amid the chaos. You are someone who responds to ambition, who doesn’t want cinema to choose between being entertaining and being meaningful. This film refuses that choice entirely. It is overwhelming by design, and its overwhelming nature is precisely the point — because the feeling of being crushed by infinite possibility is exactly what it’s about.

Oppenheimer

You are drawn to cinema on a grand scale — films that understand history not as a backdrop but as a force, and that place their characters inside that force and watch what happens. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a film about the terrifying gap between what we can do and what we should do, told with the full weight of one of the most consequential moments in human history behind it. You want your films to feel important without feeling self-important — to earn their ambition through sheer craft and the gravity of their subject. Oppenheimer does exactly that. It is enormous, complicated, and refuses easy comfort.

Birdman

You are drawn to films that foreground their own construction — that make the how of the filmmaking part of the what it’s about. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, shot to appear as a single continuous take, is cinema examining itself through the cracked mirror of a fading actor’s ego. You respond to formal daring, to the feeling that a film is doing something that probably shouldn’t be possible. Michael Keaton’s performance and Emmanuel Lubezki’s restless camera create something genuinely unlike anything else — a film that is simultaneously about creativity, relevance, self-destruction, and the impossibility of ever truly knowing if your work means anything at all.

No Country for Old Men

You are drawn to cinema that trusts silence, that refuses to explain itself, and that treats dread as a form of meaning. The Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men is a film about the arrival of a new kind of evil — implacable, arbitrary, and utterly indifferent to the moral frameworks we use to make sense of the world. It is one of the most formally controlled films ever made, and its controlled restraint is what makes it so terrifying. You want your films to haunt you, not comfort you. You are not interested in resolution if resolution would be dishonest. No Country for Old Men is honest in a way that most cinema never dares to be.

Nicole Kidman is rumored to be in a budding relationship with wealthy businessman Michael Reinstein.

The pair, who were first photographed together at a luxury hotel, were seen again enjoying a car ride, with the actress all smiles, seated next to her new man.

Nicole Kidman’s new romance comes less than a year after her divorce from country music singer Keith Urban made headlines, leaving many in shock.

As seen in photographs obtained by the Daily Mail, the 59-year-old actress was spotted enjoying a drive through Los Angeles with affluent financier Michael Reinstein on Thursday.

Kidman appeared completely overjoyed, flashing a bright smile from the front passenger seat of Reinstein’s luxury Ferrari 296 GTB, a high-end sports car valued at a staggering $340,000.

According to the news outlet, the Beverly Hills-based private equity executive picked up Kidman directly at the airport in a characteristically romantic gesture following her arrival in LA via private jet.

Having just flown back from New York City after the “Lioness” season premiere, the actress looked stylish in a sophisticated blazer, blouse, and dark sunglasses. Reinstein, for his part, looked sharp in a dapper suit and seemed to be wearing a ring on his wedding finger.

Rumors of Kidman’s new romance with Reinstein intensified after paparazzi photos captured the actress unwinding in Portofino, Italy, alongside the private equity investor. The duo was also spotted spending quality time together at a luxury hotel during the Mediterranean getaway, heavily fueling public chatter that their relationship is serious.

Speaking about the budding romance, a source told the news outlet, “After everything she went through with Keith, she deserves to find happiness.”

Before Reinstein came into the picture, there were rumors that Kidman was being eyed for a romantic connection with MGM Resorts International chairman Paul Salem.

Sources who spoke with TMZ at the time revealed that no formal private encounters had taken place between the pair, even though Salem’s interest in Kidman was well-known to his associates.

An insider further shared with Page Six that the actress is taking a break from the dating pool, stating explicitly that she is not involved with anyone and is dedicating her time to her family.

However, that seems to have changed now with her budding romance with Reinstein, although neither party has officially confirmed that they are in a relationship.

The former spouses, who originally tied the knot during a ceremony in 2006, share two teenage daughters, 17-year-old Sunday Rose and 15-year-old Faith Margaret.

Following their shocking divorce news in the summer of 2025, reports surfaced that the Oscar-winning actress made serious attempts to salvage her nineteen-year relationship with Urban.

However, the country music artist ultimately decided to move forward with a permanent separation.

According to official court documents obtained by People Magazine, the legal dissolution of their marriage was very straightforward.

The documents reveal that the actress and her ex-husband mutually agreed to waive all rights to both spousal and child support, with the couple taking financial responsibility for the cost of their respective legal teams.

How Does Keith Urban Feel About Nicole Kidman’s New Relationships?

After seeing the new photographs of Kidman and her rumored boyfriend, close associates of the former couple shared that it wasn’t a surprise to Urban to see his ex-wife moving on, as he has too.

A source explained that “among their friends, it’s common knowledge they’ve both been moving on in their own ways,” the source claimed. The insider noted that the two succeeded at shielding their personal affairs from the media for an extended period.

While recent headlines have centered primarily on the actress’s social outings, the source emphasized that Urban has also been dating under the radar since their separation.

However, the country music icon has taken extreme precautions to evade public scrutiny. He allegedly avoids high-profile venues for his dates and implements strict privacy measures, including requiring romantic interests to sign non-disclosure agreements.

While Urban has yet to directly address his divorce from Kidman, the actress broke her silence on the high-profile split for the first time in March while chatting with Variety.

During the conversation, she emphasized that her current mindset revolves entirely around personal progress and shielding her teenage daughters from the media fallout.

Rather than dwelling on the past, the Hollywood icon explained that she is deliberately channeling her energy into positive environments.

“I’m always going to be moving toward what’s good,” Kidman shared during the interview. “What I’m grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That’s that.”

Kidman chose not to elaborate on the specific circumstances that led to the dissolution of her marriage during the chat with the publication.

Instead, she clarified that her silence was driven by a deep desire to uphold the dignity of everyone impacted by the split.

“I’m staying in a place of, ‘We are a family,’ and that’s what we’ll continue to be,” Kidman noted.

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Erick All Jr. was searching for confidence, and it suddenly hit him like a truck.

Speaking to reporters at Bengals training camp on Thursday, July 30, All, 25, revealed that a moped, which he described as a “three-wheeled truck,” veered off the street and knocked him to the ground while he was vacationing in Greece last month.

“That was huge for my confidence, you don’t understand, that did a lot of good things for the mental,” he said. “It could have been very bad. That’s what I do. I’m here for the physicality. After not playing for a while, when I got smacked by that thing, and I got up, that is as big of a hit — that’s the first time I ever got pancaked. Ever. I’m like, damn, if I can take that, I’m good. I’m usually the hammer.”

He added, “I got up and was like, ‘I’m f***ing ready. I’m ready.”

All is attempting a return to football after a pair of ACL surgeries forced him to miss the second half of the 2024 season and all of 2025. He played in nine games in 2024, his rookie season, tallying 20 receptions for 158 yards.

All still has a scrape on his face from his accident, The Athletic reported, but added that he feels “100 percent.” Additionally, he has passed his conditioning test and has been fully cleared for training camp, according to the team.

For now, fans can expect All to be the Bengals’ No. 3 tight end, behind Mike Gesicki and Drew Sample.

Quarterback Joe Burrow spoke to the media as well, and expressed his excitement to see All back on the field.

Beloved Arizona high school basketball coach and mentor Ryan Blassingame suddenly died on Sunday, July 12. He was 44.  Blassingame coached basketball at Tolleson High School in 2024, stepping in when the school was “in a pinch,” according to the Arizona Republic. He was expected to help coach basketball this upcoming season at Buckeye Verrado […]

“My dad is a part of me. I have his name. I can carry his legacy,” his son, Timothy Bankston Jr., said.

Tim Sr.’s sister, Karolyn Wright, added, “He was such a beautiful spirit, such a great brother, more than just a basketball coach. More than just a basketball legend. A family man.”

Tim was a member of Simeon’s 1984 state championship team, a group whose accomplishments were marred by the shooting death of team member Ben Wilson that year.

Wilson, who was 17 when he died, was regarded as one of the top high school prospects in the country. His death was the subject of the 2012 ESPN documentary Benji: The True Story of a Dream Cut Short.

“Ben Wilson, him…It’s a lot of ball players up there,” teammate Sean Wright reflected. “They’ll all touch hands again and welcome him home.”

After high school, Tim went on to play one season at Bradley University and two more at Loyola University Chicago.

In addition to his family, Tim is survived by countless players he coached and mentored at T.F. North.

“He was not just beloved; he was a mentor that countless alumni credit for being the overriding influence that made them into the positive, productive members of communities that they are today,” a statement from Thornton Fractional High School District 215 read.

“Not a bad bone in his body,” Wayne Montgomery, one of his former players, added to the Chicago Tribune. “He was so much more than just a coach. A mentor, a friend, a teacher. He touched so many lives.”

Montgomery, now 35, lost his father at a young age and said that Tim had become like a surrogate father to him.

“He gave me those things that maybe my mother couldn’t,” Montgomery said.

According to the Tribune, Tim preached “honesty and discipline,” prioritizing academic success and teaching Montgomery the value of a firm handshake.

He was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

Everything to Know About RHOSLC Alum Jen Shah's Legal Drama

New details have continued to emerge amid the disappearance of Today show coanchor Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie.

News broke on February 1 that Nancy, 84, had been reported missing by a family member who called 911. She was last seen one day prior by daughter Annie Guthrie. (Nancy shared daughters Annie and Savannah, 54, and son Camron with late husband Charles Guthrie, who died in 1988 after a heart attack.)

While Savannah has been absent from the morning show amid the search for Nancy, she and her siblings have since shared several statements via social media.

“It’s been two weeks since our mom was taken and I just wanted to come on and say that we still have hope and we still believe and I wanted to say to whoever has her or knows where she is, that it’s never too late,” Savannah said in an emotional Instagram video on February 15. “And you’re not lost or alone. And it is never too late to do the right thing and we are here. And we believe and we believe in the essential goodness of every human being. And it’s never too late.”

Ransom Note Mentions Nancy Guthrie’s Apple Watch

After news broke of an alleged ransom note sent to local outlets, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings addressed the message.

“As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated,” she said in a February 4 Instagram video. “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”

Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke shared in a press conference the next day that the alleged ransom note made a demand for 5 p.m. and included an alternate date.

“I think we start to look at what the deadlines were in the note,” Janke said on February 5. “First, I think [it] was 5 p.m. today, and then it had a second deadline after that. So we are continuing in a normal kidnapping case, there would be contact by now trying to discuss that. But those are the time frames we’re looking at as we move forward.”

“If a transfer wasn’t made, then I think a second demand was for next Monday,” Janke continued. “We’re not going to go beyond that.”

Janke mentioned that the ransom note mentioned Nancy’s Apple Watch and a damaged floodlight on her property outside of Tucson. TMZ founder Harvey Levin on February 5 that the outlet received a ransom note that made mention of “the placement of the Apple Watch,” which he noted “has not come out” in the press as yet.

“There was a deadline at 5 o’clock today, and there is a change in — if this is a kidnapper — what the kidnapper may want,” Levin told CNN’s Erin Burnett, adding that a second deadline, set for February 9, “is far more consequential.”

“It felt like somebody means business. When you read it, it’s very detailed,” he said, explaining that the email described Nancy as being “OK, but scared” and said she was “aware of the letter and the demands” made in it.

Levin claimed that “the letter says you will have no way of contacting me — this is the only contact.” In another interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Levin shared, “It specifically says there will be no further communication … no negotiation, no communication.”

After the 5 p.m. deadline on February 5, Camron made a video and said, “Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you. We haven’t heard anything directly. We need you to reach out and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward. But first, we have to know if you have our mom. We want to talk to you and we are waiting for contact.”

Savannah Guthrie and Siblings Agree to ‘Pay’ After Ransom Note

Local news outlet KOLD said it received a second message in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

“The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department are aware of a new message regarding Nancy Guthrie,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a statement via X on February 6. “Investigators are actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity.”

“While this is one new piece of information, the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department are still asking anyone with tips to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI,” Nanos’ latest statement continued. “The FBI continues to offer a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the recovery of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.”

The next day, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings then released a video appearing to address the note.
“We received your message and we understand,” Savannah said. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”

Ransom Note Says ‘Time Is More Than Relevant’

A third ransom note obtained by TMZ appeared to be from someone offering information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. The note claimed to have unsuccessfully reached Savannah Guthrie and her siblings by email and text. The alleged message read, “If they want the name of the individual involved then I want 1 Bitcoin to the following wallet. Time is more than relevant.”

Ransom Note Claims to Have Seen Nancy Guthrie ‘Days Ago’

TMZ obtained a fourth email on February 16 from the person climbing to know who kidnapped Nancy Guthrie. The alleged email read, “I know what I saw 5 days ago south of the border and I was told to shut up so I know who he is and that was definitely Nancy with them.” The message also had the same Bitcoin account as the three previous ransom notes.

Ransom Note Described as ‘Graphic and Chilling’

Days after the fourth ransom note, TMZ reportedly received another requesting millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. However, the note received on February 18 demanded to be paid in a cryptocurrency besides Bitcoin.

“It is a really sophisticated note. I had to get someone to help translate it for me. It involves a demand for crypto — not Bitcoin,” TMZ founder Harvey Levin told CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront at the time, explaining that the demands are more specific. “The money will automatically go into this account if certain things happen. It actually involves the media, too, in terms of what the media puts out. But it’s a very sophisticated way of doing it where one thing triggers another, [which] triggers another. It’s beyond my level of knowledge.”

Levin described the note as “a little more graphic and chilling,” adding, “The previous one was also pretty chilling, but the way this is described is more so.”

When asked if the new note contains proof of life, Levin replied, “By inference, they do. They don’t say it directly, but by inference, they do, in terms of consequences.” Levin claimed that the FBI is looking into the note.

New Details Revealed From 1st Alleged Nancy Guthrie Ransom Note

In July 2026, journalist Briana Whitney read from the first alleged ransom note during an episode of the “Crime Junkie” podcast.

“Hello, Savannah. We have your mother, Nancy,” it began. “She is safe but scared. She will be held for ransom, and once payment is received, she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of seven days.”

The alleged note demanded millions of dollars in U.S. currency, providing two deadlines.

“Once payment is received to the Bitcoin address below, she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe drop off location back in Tucson,” it continued. “If the payment is not received by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5 p.m., she will be killed.”

The alleged letter went on to issue Savannah a warning, claiming, “Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands. It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible. You will not be able to contact me from here on out. There will be no negotiation. Do not play games. Law enforcement will not be able to help you.”

The note allegedly concluded with details about Nancy’s home, including that she “had a white smartwatch that was on the floor near her bed, like at the foot of her bed” and “that there was this floodlight that was destroyed in the backyard.” Whitney claimed at the time that the FBI was still investigating whether the note was real.

Nancy Guthrie Ransom Notes Released by Pima County Sheriff’s Department

In a July 2026 press release, PCSD released two ransom notes sent to local and national news outlets shortly after Nancy’s disappearance. The first was the same one read by Whitney earlier in the month. According to PCSD, it was sent to KOLD-TV 13 News, a local CBS affiliate in Tucson, Arizona, on February 2.

The second ransom note shared by PCSD was sent to KOLD on February 6 and addressed to the “Guthrie Family.”

“We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition,” the note read. “We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart-related. She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.”

The PCSD asked the public for assistance in identifying the author of the notes.

“These communications reveal distinctive patterns of word choice, syntax, and phraseology that reflect the writer’s unique linguistic style,” the press release read. “They also provide valuable insight into the person’s mindset, motives and the evolution of their tone over time.”

The department added that they believe the notes’ “distinctive linguistic characteristics may be recognizable to someone who knows or has interacted with the notes’ writer. A friend, family member, coworker, classmate, or acquaintance may recognize these patterns of expression and possess information that could help identify the individual responsible.”

Fans Worried as Ariana Grande Appears ‘Deeply Unwell’ in Video

Published

31st Annual Critics Choice Awards

Ariana Grande‘s fans are crying out in concern after her latest music video has them believing she has gone too far with her weight loss.

The beloved pop singer has faced body issues since the start of her career as a child and entertainer, often fighting back against unsolicited comments about her physical appearance.

Grande, who is currently on tour, also has her love life sparking chatter after reuniting with her ex, Ricky Alvarez.

On Friday, Grande blessed her fanbase with the music video of her hit song, “Petal,” off her newly released eighth studio album. However, rather than focus on the message of the visuals, admirers of the songstress broke out in lament over her health.

In the almost seven-minute-long clip where the pop star changed numerous times, Grande appeared super slim, perhaps underweight, with her ribs and clavicle evidently on display.

Fans wasted no time addressing her weight loss journey, calling for those around her to intervene before it gets too bad.

“Bro, this is so sad. She’s one of our generation’s biggest talents, and we’re all just watching her die right in front of our eyes,” one fan penned. Another shared a similar sentiment, writing, “This poor woman is fading away before our eyes.”

This user, describing the “POV” artist’s state as “deeply unwell,” expressed worries about her inner circle. “I wish the people around her are taking care of her,” they stated.

Others noted that Grande might interpret the backlash as judgment, but instead, fans just want her to take proper care of herself and not fall victim to beauty standards.

Ariana Grande Is Done With The Way She Used To Be In ‘Petal’

Despite the focus on her looks, Grande’s message about no longer dealing with people’s expectations of her was clear as day in the music video.

In “Petal,” she stars as the character Pepper, who arrives at the Hollywood Walk of Fame to audition to get her big break. A flower is seen on one star, growing. However, when she appears in front of the execs, they dismiss her as “not good enough.”

With each rejection, Grande’s Pepper tries again to audition, and every time she is turned down by the group of men. Symbolic of the title, each time she is denied, the petal from the beginning withers.

In one scene, the men unload on Pepper after a failed audition, telling her, “You give off this feeling that is… It’s unmarketable.” Another said to her, “The way you used to be, I miss that. You got some personality disorder going on?”

Pushed to the limit by their criticism, Grande transforms into a darker version as the scene turns red and she picks up a chainsaw to hack away at the men. Once she’s done, Pepper walks into the waiting area to cheers from other women, after which she heads to a restaurant.

While there, a bloodied Pepper unveils a fortune cookie note with the words, “You bloom wherever you are planted.”

The video, which has garnered almost 3 million views in less than 24 hours, was directed by Christian Breslauer, per People Magazine.

While Grande is yet to address the recent wave of comments, she is no stranger to responding when her body is being dissected.

Last November, the “Wicked” actress took to social media to shut down haters lovingly by resurfacing a previous 2024 interview where she advised caution about discussing people’s appearance.

“I’ve heard every version of it — of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons,” an emotional Grande said as she fought back tears.

As reported by The Blast, she concluded, asserting her new practice is not to pay attention to trolls, as her body was never meant for public consumption.

New Song Lyrics Fuel Frenzy About Ricky Alvarez Romance

When Grande’s physical appearance isn’t making headlines, her love life certainly gets tongues wagging.

The Nickelodeon alum has been riding Cupid’s wave after rekindling things with her ex-boyfriend, Ricky Alvarez, earlier this month following her split from co-star Ethan Slater.

The feeling was obvious in the song “Bad Thing (Bunny Hop),’ off her new album released on July 31. As reported by The Blast, in the lyrics, Grande gushed about “a real good boyfriend” and declares, “let’s do it twice,” seemingly referencing her dynamic with Alvarez.

As she continues to share her innermost life with fans through her music, the vocalist isn’t taking it easy on those who try to depreciate her art by leaking it.

According to The Blast, Grande filed a major lawsuit against over 100 persons, accusing them of repeated cyberattacks leading to theft and unlicensed distribution of videos, unreleased songs, private photos, and more belonging to her.

The 33-year-old is seeking relief from the plaintiffs as well as offering a warning to others in the act, urging them to desist.

Dorit Kemsley’s Ex PK Slams Her $900K Wardrobe Spending

Published

Dorit Kemsley Claims Estranged Husband PK Is Trying to Leave Her and Their Kids Homeless Feature

Paul “PK” Kemsley fired back at estranged wife Dorit Kemsley’s claims that her contract for The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills can explain her so-called “excessive” spending habits.

“Her contract does not state any requirement to update and maintain her wardrobe, make up and hair as a condition for her employment,” PK, 58, alleged in new court documents filed Thursday, July 30, and obtained by Us. “[Her] contention that she must purchase high clothing and related accessories to appear on this television show is not supported by any agreement or contract requiring such expenditures.”

He claims that from December 28, 2024, through June 28, 2025, Dorit, 50, returned $86,000 in retail purchases but spent $909,000 over 14 months ending February 28, 2026.

“[PK] contends that the amount [Dorit] spends on her wardrobe is excessive, as there is no requirement in her contract to purchase hundreds of thousands of dollars of high clothing and accessories,” as stated in the court papers.

Dorit Kemsley is accusing her estranged husband, Paul “PK” Kemsley, of having nefarious intent while attempting to sell their family home amid the pair’s ongoing divorce. In court documents obtained by Us on Monday, July 27, Dorit, 50, alleged that PK, 58, is trying to “egregiously misuse Family Code 2108” in an attempt to “side-step […]

The talent manager is also denying Dorit’s recent motion stipulating that he allegedly failed to cover the mortgage on their family home and other household expenses following their separation.

“[Dorit] does not contend that the [home] should not be sold, but rather only disputes the timing and conditions in terms of the sale which she maintains should be by mutual agreement,” PK’s filing states. “She does not contend that she has the financial ability to maintain the home and she does not acknowledge that she has any obligation to pay for the residence that she exclusively occupies.”

In a court motion filed earlier this week, Dorit accused PK of trying to “egregiously misuse Family Code 2108” in an attempt to “side-step trial” and continue to allegedly avoid making mortgage payments. She also claimed that PK promised to pay their family’s bills after he moved out of their shared home in 2024 in lieu of child support. (Family Code 2108 allows a family court during a divorce to order the sale or liquidation of community property assets to prevent a bad financial loss or high investment risk.)

She also claimed that PK promised to pay their family’s bills after he moved out of their shared home in 2024 in lieu of child support.

Dorit had reported her income, as prepared by her accountant, as $45,748 per month and claimed that the mortgage payments total more than she makes. PK, for his part, alleges her calculations are incorrect, claiming that Dorit is also “significantly overstating” his cash flow.

“Despite [her] contentions to the contrary, [PK] has provided support to [her] in the form of paying expenses, which include the first and second mortgages on the home, utilities, the house manager, nannies, homeschool teachers, private school, tuition, and her car lease for several months,” the filing reads, with PK’s attorneys claiming that he paid $300,000 for the home mortgages, an additional $420,000 for arrearages, $540,000 for household staff payroll and $57,000 for their family’s health insurance premiums, in addition to covering his kids’ private school tuition.

PK’s team alleges on Thursday that Dorit hasn’t made any payment for the mortgages and only covered certain costs for utilities and staff payroll.

“[She] prioritizes the purchase of wardrobe, makeup and hair in order to appear on the RHOBH and spends substantially in excess of any reasonable amounts for those items rather than prioritizing the payment of expenses for herself, [their] minor children, or the residence she exclusively occupies,” according to the documents.

Dorit and PK, who share two children, separated in May 2024, one year before the Bravo star filed for divorce. The estranged couple have since gone back-and-forth in court about finances.

Dorit, who has not addressed PK’s legal accusations, previously defended her spending habits.

“I can tell you that what’s been put out there is not entirely accurate,” the Unburdened author exclusively told Us in June. “However, now it’s going to be more headlines, because I have to come back with what the reality is. It’s just a snowball. As far as his opinions on what I spent — whether it’s $50,000, $1 million, $25 — it’s money that I’ve earned. I’m supporting our children.”

She continued, “I had asked him from pretty much the get-go for us to sit down and to discuss things and work it out together. In marriage, he was taking care of the finances and the bills. He was making decisions, and there was not a lot of transparency. … That led to a lot of unfortunate circumstances. I think if one person is looking to paint someone in a bad way, or create a false narrative, they’re going to do various things that they don’t work out for anyone,” she said. “I really hope that we can eventually move away from that and into better times.”

Us has reached out to Dorit for comment.
