10 HBO Shows I Knew Would Be Masterpieces After the First 10 Minutes

Published

on

The White Lotus Staff on a beach waving

Sometimes, all it takes is the first 10 minutes of a TV show to hook you immediately and confirm that this show is going to be a huge hit. Breaking Bad was like that, for example, as was its sequel series Better Call Saul. The latter cold opened with a black-and-white scene of Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) working behind the counter of a Cinnabon in Omaha, a direct reference to a comment he made in Breaking Bad that unknowingly, it seems, predicted his exact future.

Another great one is The Walking Dead, which shows Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) as sheriff walking through a parking lot when he comes across a disheveled little girl clutching a teddy bear. As he calls to her, and she turns, he realizes her face is completely deformed, and she’s groaning like a monster. Despite his clear reluctance, he shoots her dead. It’s scenes like these that draw you into a show, and HBO shows have some of the best.

‘The White Lotus’ (2021–Present)

How could you not instantly know that The White Lotus was going to be a massive hit? The show opens with a sad young man in the airport traveling home alone. He chats with an older couple, who heard about a death at the resort where he was staying. This is juxtaposed by the flashback of excited families and individuals, this man included, arriving at the fancy resort in Maui. It builds intrigue right from the jump, because you realize this is a murder mystery that needs to be solved.

Within the first 10 minutes, you’re scanning everyone, analyzing every conversation to try and figure out both who is the killer and who is dead. The scene of the waving staff members, which has become a signature of the show through its first three seasons (and the fictional resort), really has you wondering how this wonderful-looking trip suddenly turned so horrible. The story, along with the familiar faces among the cast like Connie Britton, Murray Bartlett, Jake Lacy, and Sydney Sweeney, will have you dying to blaze through all six episodes in a single sitting.

‘The Penguin’ (2024)

The Penguin might tell the backstory of one of the most iconic DC Comics villains, traveling back in time to when he was just the low-level mob wannabe known as Oswald “Oz” Cobb (Colin Farrell). But it feels more like a gangster show/movie than it does a superhero one, and you pick up on this right from the jump. It begins with an ominous scene, news reports about an explosion as Oz looks out the window at the devastation. But it’s just his outline in the dark.

Those who watched The Batman know it’s Colin Farrell in heavy make-up behind the long coat, but it’s only when the camera pans around to his face that you get chills. In his first scenes that follow, you can’t help but wonder what shenanigans Oz is going to be up to. When he confronts the late mob boss’ son Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), at first in a friendly way, you think maybe he isn’t so bad. But the events that occur from there are the beginnings of proof that Oz is not someone to be underestimated. That sets up the entire show from there.

‘True Detective’ (2014–Present)

Widely considered to be the best season of the anthology series so far, or at least among the best, True Detective Season 1 provided a good indication of what the show was all about as immediately as in the moments following the intriguing opening credits. It’s a dark, creepy night scene as a body is being taken into the forest. A fire breaks out, and it’s clear something very bad is happening. This is the case that will come back to haunt the two leads decades later.

The scene in the perfect from start to finish detective show fades to black and officer Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) is giving his statement about his partner, which instantly has you wondering who his partner is, why Marty is being questioned about him, and what it has to do with that opening scene. It flips to former partner Rusty Cohle (Matthew McConaughey), whose life has clearly gone a very different way. As they both begin to recall the case of Dora Lange, a woman who was murdered in 1995, the scene takes viewers back. Seeing the younger, baby-faced versions of these two characters will have you itching to know not only what happened in this case, but also what happened between them.

‘Game of Thrones’ (2011–2019)

Game of Thrones begins with men of the Night Watch being attacked by White Walkers in a snowy scene. It’s clear based on the fantastic directing of this scene along with the setting and cinematography that this show is going to be brilliant. The intensity, costumes, and makeup will also blow you away.

When the scene switches to men on horseback riding on a luscious, green hill, you get the idea that Game of Thrones spares no budget, and it is going to be like a Hollywood movie told across multiple seasons. Once the scene flips to the Starks, you’ll instantly want to learn more about this family who will very likely play a pivotal role (those who read the books know they will). For anyone who has read the George R. R. Martin novels on which the show is based, the picture painted looks like pages from the book come to life instantly.

The race that claimed the most of your answers is your true kin. If two tied, both are shown — you walk between worlds.

◆ A TIE — YOU WALK BETWEEN TWO RACES ◆

🌿

Your Race

The Hobbits

You are, at your core, a creature of comfort, community, and quiet joy — and there is nothing small about that. Hobbits are proof that heroism does not require ambition, that the bravest heart can beat inside the most unassuming chest. You value good food, warm hearths, close friends, and a world that stays largely untroubled by dark lords and quests. When adventure does find you — and it will — you rise to it not because you sought it, but because the people you love needed you to. That is not ordinary. That is the rarest kind of courage in all of Middle-earth.

🌟

Your Race

The Elves

Ancient, graceful, and carrying a weight of memory most mortals cannot fathom, you are one of the Elves. You see the world in its fullness — its beauty, its impermanence, the unbearable ache of watching everything you love eventually fade. You pursue perfection not from pride, but because excellence is how you honour the time you have been given. Others may see you as remote or melancholy. They are not wrong, exactly. But they mistake depth for distance. You feel everything — which is precisely why you have learned to carry it so quietly.

⚒️

Your Race

The Dwarves

Stubborn, proud, fiercely loyal, and possessed of a work ethic that would exhaust most other races before breakfast — you are Dwarf-kind through and through. You do not ask for approval and you do not offer it cheaply. Your loyalty, once given, is given for life. Your grudges last longer. You love deeply and defend ferociously, and the things you build — with your hands, with your sweat, with generations of accumulated craft — are made to last. Not for glory. Because anything worth doing is worth doing properly, and you have never once done anything by half measures.

⚔️

Your Race

The Race of Men

Mortal, ambitious, flawed, and magnificent — you belong to the most complicated race in Middle-earth, and that complexity is your greatest strength. Men are capable of cowardice and extraordinary bravery, of cruelty and breathtaking sacrifice, sometimes within the same breath. You feel the urgency of your finite years, and it drives you. You want to matter. You want to leave something behind. You fall, and you rise, and the rising is what defines you. Tolkien called mortality the Gift of Men — not a curse, but a fire that burns bright precisely because it does not burn forever. That fire is you.

💀

Your Race

The Orcs

Brutal, survivalist, and contemptuous of anything that can’t defend itself — you answered with the instincts of an Orc, and there is a certain savage honesty in that. You do not dress up your desires in polite language or pretend you want things you don’t. You want power, survival, and to never be at the bottom of any hierarchy ever again. Orcs are not evil by nature — they were made from something that was once good, and broken into this shape by forces they did not choose. What remains is fierce, territorial, and deeply aware that the world is not kind. You’ve made your peace with that. The question is what you do with it.

‘The Last of Us’ (2023–Present)

Who doesn’t love a good flashback? The Last of Us really sets the stage by flashing back to a news program in 1968 when a scientist basically predicts exactly what happens with the viral pandemic decades later, including fungus mutating to the point that it becomes uncontrollable and can’t be stopped. In the beginning, the show’s host and the audience are smiling and laughing at the absurdity. But as his explanation begins to sound more and more real, it seems like they are all quietly panicking inside. Viewers at home know very well what is coming in this adventure video game masterpiece, which makes this scene even more impactful.

The story flips to 2003, and we see Joel (Pedro Pascal) and his daughter Sarah (Nico Parker) going about their day in what is very clearly just before the virus begins to spread in a big way. Seeing the interactions and picking up on subtle clues, you can’t wait for the other shoe to drop, but also appreciate the slow burn. It sets the stage for the pre-surly Joel, a glimpse into who he was before the loss of his daughter. The first few minutes also introduce Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), who, as fans know, becomes pivotal to the plot going forward.

‘Succession’ (2018–2023)

The opening scene of Succession is the most vulnerable Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is throughout the entire series, but it’s important to set up the premise and why it’s so important. He awakens in the night, unaware of where he is. He walks into a room, pulls down his pants, and urinates. When the lights go on, he’s in the hallway and has relieved himself on the floor. Cut to his goofy son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) in a suit rapping to music with headphones on while in the backseat of a limo.

You instantly understand that Succession is going to follow an elderly media head in desperate need of passing the torch to someone else. But if Kendall is any indication, his grown kids clearly aren’t ready to lead. Kendall, who seems to be first in line, is desperate for respect but isn’t getting any. He’s the only Roy sibling introduced in the first 10 minutes, along with COO Frank (Peter Friedman), the obvious buffer between family and business. You can tell it’s going to be a wild ride the second Kendall and Logan are in the same room together. The circus it becomes hasn’t even begun, but you just know that when the other kids come along, it’s going to be explosive. The setup is perfectly subtle while getting the point across.

‘The Newsroom’ (2012–2014)

The Newsroom has one of the cleverest, perfectly delivered opening scenes that sets the stage for the lead character, the show’s political slant, and the overall tone. It’s a Q&A session at a university and news anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is innocently asked by a young student what makes America the greatest country in the world. He delivers a long monologue basically saying America is not the greatest country in the world and here’s why. Of course, it goes viral.

The idea that this drama is going to follow an already very outspoken and cynical man through a rocky situation will perk your ears up. He returns to work a month later to learn that most of his staff is gone, and his new producer happens to be his ex-girlfriend. When Will learns she has been brought on to improve the network, he doesn’t take too kindly to both the change and the awkwardness of answering to his ex. The Newsroom went on to be one of the best political shows of the decade.

‘Westworld’ (2016–2022)

A woman is naked, sitting in a chair and being questioned by a man. He seems to be controlling her. She is staring into space as a fly crawls along her face, even onto her eyeball. But she doesn’t instinctively swat it away as most humans would do. It’s evident that this woman isn’t actually human. But what is she? When the scene in Westworld switches to the woman in bed in a lovely home, looking out into the town and discussing the order and purpose of her days, everything seems fine, like it exists in another time.

Once she meets a young man in a cowboy hat, it’s like an old Western movie. The situation turns bleak quickly, however, and you get the sense that this is just the beginning of many horrors to come. There’s no way you can stop watching now, especially when the Man in Black (Ed Harris) shows up, hinting that this show could have been the next Lost. Those who read the books know what Westworld is about, seeing it come to life in such a convincing way will have you hooked.

‘Chernobyl’ (2019)

One of the best miniseries on HBO, Chernobyl tells the story of the catastrophic nuclear plant disaster of 1986 that occurred in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union back in the ’80s. It begins with the voiceover of a man talking about truth, stories, and the importance of knowing not who the heroes are but who is to blame. You know something very bad has happened that this person is recollecting. Since it’s based on a true story, you also understand the gravity of it.

When you see the clearly broken up man recording his testimony on several mini cassette tapes then wrapping them in paper, you know this isn’t going to end well. And it doesn’t. The horrifying nature of this subtle yet powerful scene leaves it virtually impossible for you not to want to keep going to learn more about who this man is, and what his involvement was in everything that happened.

‘The Sopranos’ (1999–2007)

Today, The Sopranos is mostly remembered for its ambiguous finale that had everyone talking. And of course, the fantastic stories and moments throughout the show’s six seasons. But it’s easy to forget how the beginning of this crime drama instantly set the stage and had fans sold on watching. It begins with Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) in the waiting room of his psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi’s (Lorraine Bracco) office. He sits down for his first-ever session. These sessions, of course, would become integral to the show as Tony gets help dealing with panic attacks.

Tony has a violent job as a mob boss but also struggles to balance this with being a family man. It’s an awkward conversation as Tony seems disinterested in sharing, forced to see her by his family doctor. But Jennifer is intrigued. As Tony begins to tell his story, she seems to imply that she’s willing to keep his secrets. It almost feels like you’re watching a gangster movie like Goodfellas. Tony is someone you need to get to know, and his dynamic with Jennifer is instantly interesting, providing a nice reprieve from the action that you suspect is coming as the plot unfolds.

Meghan Markle Compared To Anne Boleyn In New Book

Published

on

Meghan Markle at the Nations Home, Invictus Games

Meghan Markle has been compared to one of the most controversial figures in royal history, Anne Boleyn, amid ongoing debate about her departure from royal life alongside Prince Harry.

The comparison was made by author Catherine Mayer, who argued that both women were viewed as outsiders and faced intense hostility after entering the royal fold. The remarks come as reports suggest Harry and Meghan are considering spending more time in Australia following their warmly received visit to the country earlier this year.

Meghan Markle has been linked to controversial royal predecessor Anne Boleyn, who served as Queen Consort during her marriage to King Henry VIII.

On the surface, the two women appear to have little in common. Meghan lives in Montecito with Prince Harry and their two children, while Anne met a notorious end in 1536 after being accused of treason.

However, while promoting her new book, Divide and Rule: Royal Women and Their Battles,” author Catherine Mayer suggested that Meghan’s “brutal” departure from royal life mirrors Anne’s experience in several ways, particularly as both women were viewed as cultural outsiders.

“Critics hold [Anne] solely responsible for her own downfall. If you assume this to be a description of Meghan, you’re right – but here’s the thing: the same details apply, word for word, to Anne Boleyn,” Mayer wrote in the book, per Sky News.

Meghan’s Reputation Was ‘Damned,’ Author Claims

Mayer went on to describe Meghan as the least popular royal “except for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor,” who lost his royal patronages and military affiliations following scrutiny over his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

According to Mayer, Meghan’s reputation may have been “damned” by a palace culture she characterized as hostile toward outspoken women.

“To those who clamour for Meghan to be expunged from public life like a latter-day Anne Boleyn, I’d ask one question: what exactly has she done to earn such hostility?” Mayer added.

Meghan Markle Continues To Face Online Criticism

Meghan has frequently found herself at the center of online criticism, so much so that she once claimed she was the “most trolled person in the world” during the past decade.

Whether through products released under her As Ever lifestyle brand, her Netflix series With Love, Meghan,” or her social media activity, critics have regularly questioned the Duchess’s decisions.

Most recently, Meghan marked Princess Lilibet’s birthday by sharing photos of herself and Harry with their daughter. Days earlier, she posted images from a family outing that included Archie and Lilibet.

The posts sparked criticism from some social media users, who argued that sharing images of her children conflicted with her advocacy for child safety and online privacy.

Duchess Defends Sharing Family Photos

The criticism eventually prompted a response from Meghan’s camp, which argued that sharing family moments while protecting children’s identities is entirely consistent with her message on online safety.

“The Duchess has always been clear that there is a distinction between sharing moments from her life and exposing her children to public scrutiny,” a representative told Newsweek.

They continued, “By obscuring their faces, she is demonstrating the very principle she advocates for: giving children privacy, agency, and protection in an increasingly digital world.”

“Far from being contradictory, by concealing their faces she is actually reflecting the message she delivered in Geneva: that parents can choose to share family experiences while still taking deliberate steps to protect identities, privacy, and digital footprint,” the spokesperson added.

Harry Reportedly Wants Meghan Markle Back In Australia

After a challenging few years in the United States, reports suggest Harry and Meghan may be exploring Australia as a potential fresh start.

The couple spent four days in the country in April on what many described as a quasi-royal tour, receiving a warm welcome while participating in charity engagements and private events.

According to reports, Harry has become particularly fond of the country and is eager to return with Meghan and their children.

“He can’t wait to get back with Meghan and the kids,” an insider claimed. “Harry would love to spend an extended amount of time there. It’s no secret they’re looking to make a fresh start somewhere, and Harry seems to think Australia can offer that.”

The Sussexes previously toured Australia in 2018 during an official royal visit while Meghan was pregnant with Prince Archie. They have not undertaken a similar royal tour since stepping back from official duties in 2020.

The Star Trek Icon Who Suddenly Stripped Naked On Set

The Star Trek Icon Who Suddenly Stripped Naked On Set

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

From the very beginning, Star Trek has been a franchise about exploring strange new worlds. Often, that’s literal, with our intrepid crews learning about new life and new civilizations on one planet after another. More often than you might think, however, the most interesting explorations were more metaphorical, as our characters discovered new facets of their own humanity. However, there was one final frontier this franchise never explored for decades: nudity!

Until its more recent pivot to streaming, Star Trek had always premiered on network television. That meant that it had to abide by certain broadcast standards and practices. As you might imagine, there are plenty of restrictions regarding nudity, most of which focus on how much skin can be shown. That’s why, when Q showed up naked in The Next Generation episode “Deja Q,” we only see so much: one cheek, no crack, and (perhaps most importantly) no genitals. No matter how much they wanted it otherwise, fans could only see so much of Q actor John de Lancie’s body. The actors, however, saw everything because de Lancie stripped completely naked on set!

The Naked Now

“Deja Q” is the Next Generation episode where Q loses all of his godlike powers and is rendered human. He is being punished by the Q continuum for abusing those powers to torment various alien beings who can’t fight back. Aboard the Enterprise-D, Q is attacked by an alien race that he had preyed on before (the Calamarain), and they end up damaging Data. Realizing that he is putting the entire crew at risk, Q steals a shuttle and tries to sacrifice himself to the aliens to keep everyone else safe. Impressed by altruism, the Q Continuum ultimately restores all of Q’s powers.

In previous appearances, Q had always made himself look imposing by dressing like a judge, a soldier, and even a Starfleet captain. To visually underscore that his powers had been stripped, the Star Trek: The Next Generation producers stripped him, and Q showed up completely nude on the bridge. To make that happen, John de Lancie was given a g-string to protect his modesty. According to visual effects supervisor Dan Curry, de Lancie decided to forego the g-string, and nobody else knew until the actor showed up on set.

Star Trek Icon Bares It All

As recorded in Star Trek: The Next Generation 365, Curry said, “The script said ‘Q appears nude.’ We planned to have John de Lancie lay on a wooden board that couldn’t be seen due to Patrick Stewart’s position in the shot.” However, things soon went off-kilter in the most hilarious way. “As we were prepping the shot, John showed up on the set with his bathrobe on. When we were ready to go, he dropped his bathrobe, and he was stark naked. That caused… ummmm… a bit of a stir.”

Curry didn’t elaborate further, so we can only imagine what costars like Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner felt about seeing the full de Lancie. However, the visual supervisor did note that despite (or perhaps because of) the actor’s unexpected antics, the scene went exactly as planned. “It’s one of the few shots we’ve done that came out looking exactly like the storyboard. I’d picked the spot for the camera in advance, and the scene played out just as I drew it.”

In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Q is a chaotic trickster god, and you never know exactly what he’s going to do next. Now, you know that John de Lancie has the same temperament as his omnipotent onscreen alter ego. While the actor doesn’t, sadly, have his character’s fantastic cosmic powers, he did demonstrate one astonishing ability on the set that day: just like that, he transformed “Deja Q” into a special after-hours rerun: “The Naked Now.”

Zac Efron Is Living Off the Grid in Australian Rainforest

Published

on

Zac Efron Through the Years

Zac Efron is in the process of building a sustainable $2 million home in the Australian rainforest.

The High School Musical actor, 38, has partnered with eco-friendly designer Joost Bakker and architect Frank Burridge on a residence he calls “Futurecave”, which is located an hour outside of Australia’s famed Byron Bay, per the Daily Mail.

Efron’s design team is using environmentally responsible building materials — largely made from hemp blocks, recycled oyster shells and agricultural waste — and more than 200 sustainable particle boards to construct the six-bedroom, two-story property as well as its internal bricks, mattresses and even bedsheets. All of the bedroom pods will be connected by an outdoor walkway and each has their own rooftop garden.

In December 2025, Efron confirmed to the Australian Financial Review that he purchased a 128-hectare plot in New South Wales in 2020 and is just now starting to develop it.

“I live a pretty fast-paced life and work quite a bit, so in between movies and press tours, my number one goal is always to take time for myself and rest and recharge and to be in nature as much as possible, and as close to the earth as I can, and this land just feels like it’s perfect for that,” Efron explained.

He expressed hopes that the “Futurecave” could become “the coolest house ever built” once the project is complete.

Eforn spent the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia and later returned to the country to film his Netflix travelogue Down to Earth, during which he met Bakker, 51.

Bakker confirmed last November that he had started developing the concept of “Futurecave.”

Zac Efron Through the Years

Related: Zac Efron Through the Years: From ‘HSM’ Heartthrob to Leading Man

Zac Efron has transitioned from dreamy teen heartthrob to leading man. The actor first won over audiences as Troy Bolton in Disney Channel’s High School Musical, which premiered in 2006. Efron became a household name overnight and reprised his role in 2007’s High School Musical 2 and 2008’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Thank […]

“It’s not every day of the week that @zacefron asks you to design his home, I am beyond excited! Especially as it will be the first home he has ever owned,” he revealed via Instagram at the time. “Zac fell in love with @futurefoodsystem and then our family home in Monbulk and now wants a home of his own + best of all he wants me to push my ideas as far as they can go!”

The designer described Efron’s sustainable home as a “dream come true” that was “pushing my team creatively.”

“For the past year we’ve experimented with making hemp blocks, replacing concrete with two materials that restore the environment hemp, possibly the best plant on earth at repairing and restoring soil health and of course oysters, natures ultimate ocean restorer,” he shared.

Bakker went on, “We are using the most cutting edge technology (invented by the Romans 2000+ years ago) I want to create a building material that I hope will become mainstream one day — a material that naturally breathes, is anti mould, naturally fire resistant and improves the indoor air Zac will ultimately breathe.”

More recently, he confirmed on May 8 that his team was “excited to get started on Zac’s house” after more than six months of lining up the concepts.

“Although @zacefron kitchen and bathroom joinery will only use only 200 hundred boards (less than 1000 square metres of crop) if we embrace this product we have the potential to help farmers restore soil health in a natural way,” he revealed via Instagram on May 22.

Us Weekly has reached out to Efron’s representatives for comment.

Efron told Variety in December 20243 that he was actively trying to shift focus from work to his personal life.

“I’m thinking about where I want to build a home base and cultivate my life,” he said. “It’s shocking — sometimes you wake up after doing three movies a year, and you’re like, I’ve neglected thinking about my own personal life for this long.”

He continued, “The goal is always the next mission, the next movie, making sure everyone else is very happy. It can be very lonely at times. But the process of taking your emotions head-on, sort of working with them, was a profound moment in my life. And it’s definitely taken me down a different road.”

We are back at the Love Island USA villa — but when (and how often) do new episodes drop?

Season 8 of the Peacock hit debuts Tuesday, June 2, following a group of singles who have to pair off in order to stay in the show’s luxury villa in Fiji. The contestants — who are referred to as Islanders — live in isolation in the villa and are under constant video surveillance.

Hosted by Ariana Madix, Love Island USA requires the group to be coupled up in order to have a chance at receiving the $100,000 prize. While the Islanders are filming nonstop for weeks, viewers are watching daily episodes — and even get to cast votes that affect couples and the fate of the contestants.

Love Island USA releases episodes every day (except for Wednesdays!) at 9 p.m. ET. There is also a new Aftersun special every Saturday to recap what took place in the villa that week.

Before season 8 even premiered on Peacock, the official Love Island USA account released a statement regarding the cast.

“The Villa runs on good vibes, and so does this community,” read a post shared via Instagram. “We love seeing your reactions, opinions, and debates, but everyone deserves to feel safe and respected.”

The statement continued: “This is a space for fun, not negativity — so keep it kind, keep it positive, and remember: this is LOVE Island!”

Love Island USA made headlines again when contestant Vasana Montgomery was removed ahead of the season 8 premiere after resurfaced social media posts showed her using a slur. Both clips were leaked from her private social media, which meant producers weren’t privy to the posts while casting the show.

Cierra Ortega also faced backlash when a resurfaced social media post showed her using a slur. She was pulled from the villa and later issued an apology for her posts.

Blasted “Love Island” cop Sean Reifel can get his job back. However, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Mayor J. William Reynolds says he will have to do one thing. Reifel was previously slammed by the local politician after it was revealed he allegedly quit his job to film the latest season of the popular Peacock reality series. His stint in Fiji, however, came to a sad end after he was the first islander to be booted from the villa in a recent episode.

According to a new report from TMZ, Reynolds told the publication that the Bethlehem Police Department is open to rehiring Reifel after being the first islander to be axed from the “Love Island” villa. However, in order to get back to patrolling the streets, Reifel will have to reapply for the position.

The mayor told the news outlet that if Reifel reapplys for the open position, he’ll be required to go through the same process as everyone else. Essentially saying he was not guaranteed solely because of his history with the city or department.

Reifel was one of the original cast members to be featured on season 8 of “Love Island” when it premiered on June 2, 2026. “I’m not a model, not an actor, I’m a police officer actually,” he said on the series. “You could be having the worst day of your life, and I’ll just help you sift through that.”

Before Williams shared how Reifel could get his job back, he criticized the 29-year-old while speaking with the media, according to The Blast. During his statement, he said the Peacock TV personality left the city of Bethlehem, PA, in a tough spot to film the series.

“Our police department spent a lot of time training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy. We are disappointed he left as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year,” Mayor Williams said.

And that’s not all. He added, “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”

Users on Reddit torched the public figure, with one writing, “This is so unprofessional lol, why are they trying to tarnish his name? Ever heard of At Will employment? [They are] mad AF they didn’t get to fire him first.”

Reifel’s Family Reacts To The 29-Year-Old Father Of One Being The First To Get Sent Home

Reifel’s elimination episode aired on Sunday, June 7, and his family reacted to the saddening moment with an emotional post on social media.

Reifel’s sister, Brice Marie, said that although she was told by “Love Island” producers that her brother would be the first to be sent home, she still found the moment difficult to watch. Additionally, she shared that one of the reasons Reifel may not have found a meaningful connection was due to his age gap with the other women.

“So, it just made sense that he didn’t find a super close connection there in that way,” she said, according to Cosmo.

The new season of “Love Island,” hosted by Ariana Madix, is reaching a wider audience, as the first three episodes of season 8 have become the “most-watched debut of an original season of television” in the streamer’s history, per Variety.

The first three episodes have reached a total of 824 million minutes watched—a 74% increase from the year before.

Put another way, season 8 has generated about 3.7 million views. Variety reports that the estimate is based on dividing the 824 million minutes watched by the 224 minutes of content released so far.

The Show’s First Live Vote Of The Season Caused Issues

The increase in viewers was apparent during last night’s first live vote of the season. According to PEOPLE, when viewers learned they could decide which Islanders the three new bombshells would couple up with, demand was so high that it crashed the app.

The official “Love Island” Instagram account shared an update, though, informing fans that they’d extended the vote until 3 PM ET on June 10, 2026.

New episodes of “Love Island” air every day except Wednesdays on Peacock.
