Say what you want about Michael Bay, but the filmmaker has directed and produced many big-name projects. While some found huge success, others ended as box-office bombs. And the projects that have become theatrical failures tend to find redemption on streaming platforms.
Ever since Bay started his career in 1986, He has worked as a producer on many franchises, most notably Transformers (which he also directed), as well as The Purge, A Quiet Place, and the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th. But there is another franchise that Bay was attached to that was heavily criticized, yet it got a sequel that underperformed compared to its predecessor.
In 2014, Bay was one of the producers of the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. While it was a box-office success, it received negative reviews from both critics and fans. Its box-office performance led to the creation of its sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which recently became a streaming hit. The film ranked #10 on Tubi’s Top 10 Overall charts in the United States, below The Rainmaker. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows featured the return of Megan Fox as April O’Neil, while the Ninja Turtles were played by Reacher‘s Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, and Noel Fisher. Also introduced in the movie is Casey Jones, played by Arrow star Stephen Amell.
When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was released in theaters, it became a box-office flop, only making $246 million worldwide, compared to the $485 million its predecessor made in 2014. At the same time, the sequel was still heavily criticized, earning a 38% critics score and a 47% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant claimed that the sequel was able to “capture the spirit of classic TMNT cartoons” rather than trying to make it “grounded” and “believable,” and bringing Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly) felt like something “ripped right out of the 1987 animated series.” However, its poor score was due to a lack of memorable combat scenes that failed to appeal to its adult fanbase.
Collider’s Perri Nemiroff gave Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows a “B-” grade in her review. She noted that some of the combat scenes would be “sloppy” due to heavy CGI use, especially in the 3rd act. She also praised the actors’ performances as the Ninja Turtles and their designs, which she described as “highly detailed and well integrated in the real world.” She also praised how director Dave Green and the screenwriters addressed the turtles’ dilemma of whether to fit in with society or keep a low profile.

Justin Timberlake is reportedly going the extra mile to “redeem himself” with his family after a run of negative headlines over the past couple of years.
The “Mirrors” singer was arrested in 2024 for driving while intoxicated, after which reports emerged suggesting his wife Jessica Biel gave him an “ultimatum” to get his act together.
Justin Timberlake also faced renewed scrutiny recently due to the release of his arrest footage, which he fought hard to prevent from coming to light.

Timberlake is reportedly trying to ensure things are harmonious at home after a series of negative headlines caused a strain in his relationship with his wife.
According to Star Magazine, sources say the 45-year-old pop star is “going the extra mile” to redeem himself and strengthen his marriage after his run-in with the law, coupled with a video that saw him berating his stage crew last year, left him in a bad spot with Biel and their sons, Silas and Phineas.
“[Timberlake] is determined to redeem himself,” the insider told the news outlet. “But this process is going to start at home, so he’s been leaning into fatherhood with a smile on his face.”
The “Selfish” singer is said to have “stepped up” by becoming more involved with the kids and spending time with them at their ranch in Montana, as Biel increasingly gets busy with television projects like “The Sinner” and “The Better Sister.”

Timberlake and Biel’s marriage is one of the most enduring Hollywood celebrity marriages, having tied the knot in 2012.
However, their union seems to have been rocked in recent times with reports claiming the actress “issued an ultimatum” to him to fix up, because she’s “had it” with his recent behavior.
The “SexyBack” singer traveled to Las Vegas earlier this year to host the 8 AM Invitational golf tournament, but eyewitnesses told Page Six that he appeared intoxicated towards the end of the day.
Following this, a source told the Daily Mail that if he has another such misstep, Biel will “pull the trigger,” adding that “there’s not much more she can take.”

The insider also said that Timberlake is “never home” despite concluding his world tour last July.
“She does everything with the kids, and she’s sick of being publicly embarrassed,” the source claimed.
However, a separate source told Page Six that while there might have been trouble in paradise, the couple were “working through it” and doing all they could to move forward.
“It’s been a tough stretch lately. There’s just been a lot of attention on him, and that’s not easy to deal with,” the insider said.
“She’s definitely been frustrated at times, and there’s been a lot going on,” they continued, noting that Timberlake and Biel have had their “ups and downs like any couple, but the recent spotlight and his schedule have made things more challenging. That said, it’s not anything close to a breaking point.”

Timberlake was arrested in June 2024 for driving while under the influence in Sag Harbor, New York. He pleaded guilty to an impaired driving charge in September 2024 and was forced to apologize outside the court for his actions.
Reports emerged noting Biel was displeased with his arrest and was concerned about his behavior outside their home.
Back in March, body cam footage of the moment he was arrested was released by the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD), showing him intoxicated, and sources told People Magazine that Biel was “not happy about the renewed attention” it brought to her husband’s case.
“There’s a reason they pushed back on the footage being released,” the source said, explaining that Biel finds the incident “stressful and would prefer to move past it.”
“It obviously doesn’t portray him in the best light,” the insider added.

According to People, the insider went further to note that the actress is still disappointed with the situation, particularly with the video being made public, but had remained supportive of the singer.
“There have been some challenging moments lately, and she’s focused on moving forward,” the source told the news outlet. “She’s the happiest when she’s able to focus on family life, along with her work, when she chooses to take on projects.”
“She’s supportive of Justin, but she’s also not afraid to express when she’s disappointed in certain decisions. This was one of those moments,” they added.
Recently, sources also shared with US Weekly that Biel and Timberlake are getting to a good place in their union after dealing with past “trust issues” and the singer’s DWI scandal.
Sixteen years after the death of his wife, Nancy Dolan, Martin Short is reflecting on her last words — and finding their connection to the couple’s late daughter, Katherine.
“Martin, let me go,” Short, 76, told The New York Times in an interview published on Friday, May 15, recalling to the outlet Dolan’s final message to her husband as paramedics rushed into their bedroom.
Dolan died at age 58 in 2010 following a battle with ovarian cancer. She and Short had been married since 1980.
In his NYT sit-down, Short drew a parallel between Dolan’s death and Katherine, who died by suicide at age 42 in February.
“Katherine was saying: ‘Dad, let me go,’” he continued. “I don’t see any difference between mental illness as a disease and cancer as a disease. In some cases, both are terminal. And in some cases, both are survivable.”
Short added that the loss of his daughter was different than the loss of his wife.
“This is your child,” he said. “I am trying to head toward the light.”
Short and Dolan also shared sons Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36.
The Only Murders in the Building star broke his silence on Katherine’s death in a CBS Sunday Morning interview earlier this week.
“It’s been a nightmare for the family,” he said on Sunday, May 10. “But the understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal. And my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she couldn’t until she couldn’t.”
Short also reflected on his multiple family deaths in his new Netflix documentary, Marty, Life Is Short. (In addition to Dolan and Katherine, the actor lost his older brother, David, and both parents, Olive and Charles, in an eight-year span before he turned 21.)
“What it developed in me was this muscle of survival and handling grief, and a perspective on it,” Short told CBS Mornings of navigating those losses. “I think if you’ve gone through that, an audience not liking you is really not that important anymore.”
Though Short’s longtime friend Lawrence Kasdan, who directed the documentary, suggested delaying the project after Katherine’s death, the comedian said he wanted to move forward.
“My instinct was the opposite,” Short explained on Sunday. “Because it’s about love, loss and survival … I think we proceed. We must figure a way to survive through grief without denying it or without in any way undermining its importance.”

Another mysterious Lord of the Rings project that had been in development since 2023 was a new Lord of the Rings MMO game in the works at Amazon. Developments of the project have been painfully unavailable for a while now, and this week, fans who have been looking forward to the game had their worst fears realized. The Lord of the Rings MMO game at Amazon has officially been cancelled, but Amazon’s Head of Games, Jeff Grattis promised in a recent interview that they are “continuing to explore a compelling new game experience that does justice to Tolkien’s world.” He also insists that the company is “working closely with Middle-earth and still excited about the IP.”
Additional cast members for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum include Andy Serkis as Gollum, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Lee Pace as Thranduil, Leo Woodall as Halvard, and Kate Winslet as Marigol. The script comes from Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippe Boyens, and Arty Papageorgiou. Plot specifics are still being kept under wraps, but it’s confirmed to follow Aragorn’s quest to capture Gollum to keep the ring out of Sauron’s hands. It will reportedly focus on Aragorn’s younger days as a ranger.

Earlier this year, Lena Dunham released her memoir “Famesick.” In the tell-all book, she alleged that her “Girls” co-star Adam Driver screamed in her face, threw a chair, and even punched a hole in his trailer. Although the actor, best known for his role as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo in the “Star Wars” universe, has yet to publicly comment on the accusations, one of his costars is speaking out. Scarlett Johansson played the actor’s wife in the 2019 Noah Baumbach film “Marriage Story” and worked with him in James Gray’s film “Paper Tiger,” which is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 16.

Despite the accusations made by Lena Dunham in her “Famesick” memoir, Johansson has nothing but praise for her “Marriage Story” costar. In September 2025, she told PEOPLE magazine that it was “great” working with Driver on the film.
“I love Adam as a person, and he is an absolutely extraordinary actor,” she said at the time. “If I could make every movie with Adam Driver, I would.”

In the 2019 drama, Driver and Johansson play a couple going through a difficult divorce. In one of the scenes, the pair scream at each other, and Driver’s character, Charlie, even punches a hole through the wall as he tells Johansson’s character Nicole, “Every day I wake up and hope you’re dead.”
The infamous scene was later used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in order to scare off a pack of gray wolves that had reportedly been “terrorizing” an Oregon farm’s livestock, according to the Wall Street Journal.
When told about the news, Johannson joked, “I’m glad we could be useful!”

In 2019, Johansson told As If magazine that the scene was “brutal” to film. “We spent two entire days screaming at each other, brutally screaming and fighting for two full days,” she shared at the time.
“It was exhausting, but if I didn’t have as strong an actor as Adam to take all the stuff I was giving him, I would have been lost,” she added. “For me, working with other actors is a really important part of what I do … it’s everything.”

In their new film “Paper Tiger,” Johansson plays Hester Pearl, the wife of Irwin Pearl, played by Miles Teller. The two are enjoying a happy life raising two boys in 1980s New York. Things take a turn for the worse when Irwin’s brother, Gary, played by Adam Driver, arrives and puts the family in danger due to his ties with the Russian mafia.
“I would’ve loved to have had even more scenework with him, I love working with him,” she told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the film’s premiere at the Cannes film festival on Saturday, May 16.
Fortunately, she had nice things to say about being Teller’s spouse this time around.
“He’s so unexpectedly tender,” she said of her relationship with Teller on set. “I went away for a couple of weeks to do the press for Jurassic — I felt crazy to leave, but I had to go — and when I was gone, I’d get photographs of my makeup station from Miles, and he’d be like, ‘Where’s Hester?’”

In her memoir “Famesick,” Dunham had a lot to say about her “Girls” co-star. She revealed that they “felt like partners” and found herself coming to him for advice on decisions “that weren’t his to make” despite the “chair incident.”
As The Blast previously reported, Dunham claimed that they were standing in the kitchen when she “looked up to see him smiling at me with something so tender, it felt like it could only have been love.”
In another passage, she wrote, “I spent an inordinate amount of time wondering if Adam liked me,” adding, “He could be short-tempered and verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing. He could also be protective, loving even.”
She also alleges that they almost crossed a boundary in their relationship when his now-wife, Joanne Tucker, was out of town. Although she told him that he could come over late one night, she claims she pretended to be asleep once he actually arrived.
“If we crossed whatever boundary we were threatening to cross, the return to work would be tinged with humiliation, that I’d be minimizing any authority I still had, and that, however it went, my heart -bruised but improbably not yet broken – would crack,” she wrote in the book. She alleges that Driver called to tell her that he was engaged a month after the incident, and the two never spoke of it again.
Driver has yet to publicly comment on the allegations.

The latest Nielsen ratings are in, and HBO Max is ruling over the competition again. The streamer has two titles in the top 10, while Prime Video and Netflix have one each. Ditto for Disney+ and Paramount+, although Hulu is enjoying the evergreen success of two massive animated series. The latest Nielsen streaming ratings cover the week of April 13 to April 19. Meanwhile, on the linear television side of things, only two narrative series found spots in the top 10. Both shows hailed from CBS — Tracker and Marshals — and each drew more than 7 million viewers for the week of May 4 to May 10.
Netflix’s sole title in the streaming list was the movie Thrash, starring Phoebe Dynevor. The creature feature paved the way for the survival thriller Apex, which will likely deliver bigger results in the upcoming Nielsen ratings. On the other hand, the sole Prime Video title in the top 10 was The Boys. The superhero series will conclude its fifth and final season on May 20. The final season premiered on April 8, which makes the number two performance rather surprising. Hulu found success in the latest Nielsen ratings thanks to Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy, while Paramount+ secured its only spot on the list thanks to SpongeBob SquarePants. Other legacy titles on the list were Grey’s Anatomy and Survivor, both of which are available on Hulu and other streamers.
HBO Max’s second-best title was The Big Bang Theory, which will get a new spin-off shortly. However, the number one title for the week was The Pitt, whose 15-episode second season ended on April 16. For the second time in a row, it was the only title to accumulate more than 1 billion minutes viewed in a single week — this week, it posted 1.3 billion minutes viewed. By comparison, The Boys tapped out at 918 million minutes viewed. The Pitt continues to be a runaway hit for HBO Max, with the second season scoring a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “Clocking in for a second season of a near-perfect medical procedural, The Pitt goes all in on narrative excellence, brilliant humanity, and heart-wrenching drama to winning effect.” Starring Noah Wyle at the forefront of an eclectic ensemble, the series has been renewed for a third season.

Former NFL star Josh Mauro’s official cause of death has been revealed.
According to records from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner viewed by Us Weekly on Friday, May 15, Mauro died due to “acute combined fentanyl, cocaine and ethanol intoxication.” The athlete’s death was ruled an accident.
TMZ was first to report the news.
Mauro’s family confirmed his death last month. He was 35.
“With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new — living in the presence of the Lord — we humbly covet your prayers as our family walks through the devastating loss of our amazing son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend,” the football player’s family wrote in an April Facebook statement. “On Thursday, April 23rd, Josh breathed his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven.”
The family continued, “The Lord has been our strength in this unimaginable moment. Your prayers for continued strength and comfort mean more to us than words could ever express.”
Mauro’s mother, Jeri, later expressed her gratitude for her loved ones in the wake of her son’s death.
“We are drawing our strength from the LORD,” Jeri wrote via Facebook in April. “Thankful for our family and friends.”
Mauro played eight seasons in the NFL for five different teams. After not getting selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Stanford alum signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, he was released from the team during its final roster cuts. Mauro ended up signing with the Arizona Cardinals for his rookie season.
The defensive end played for the Cardinals until his 2018 release. Mauro went on to have stints with the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, formerly of Oakland, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In 2020, Mauro returned to the Cardinals, where he played the remainder of his career. The athlete’s final season was in 2021.
The Cardinals also paid tribute to Mauro following his death.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro,” the team said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss.”
Several of Mauro’s former teammates also sent their condolences.
“Prayers go out to Josh Mauro and his family. Had the opportunity to be around Josh for several years with BA,” Adrian Wilson wrote via X. “Always in shape, always was ready to go wherever he got that call. One of the things I respected most about him. You could depend on him.”
Maxx Crosby also shared, “I’m sick to my stomach, to be honest. Josh, I love you, bro. I know you had my back since day one.”
